There is really only one way to learn the game:
Step 1: tutorials
Step 2: begin playing until you get stuck
Step 3: find answer on forum/wiki or ask
Step 4: repeat steps 2 and 3 as needed

Hint: once you design a warship with a fire control and a weapon (beam, railgun, missiles, etc) make sure you go to the "ships" screen, select that ship, go to the fire control/combat tab and assign each weapon to a specific fire control (you can assign more than one of the same weapon to a fire control but both will fire on the same target). Without doing this, your weapons won't fire.

If its a missle system, you also need to load your magazines with the appropriate missle and connect it to the missle launcher

Ok, I have one shipped designed, the Armstrong class, Geological Survey type ship.  There are six in the class, Armstong, Aldrin, Collins, Glenn, Sheperd, and Gagarin.  They are divided into three Survey Groups with two ships each surveying the Sol system.

QuoteArmstrong class Geological Survey Vessel    4,300 tons     81 Crew     508.75 BP      TCS 86  TH 125  EM 0
1453 km/s     Armour 1-23     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/0/3     Damage Control Rating 2     PPV 0
Maint Life 3.17 Years     MSP 148    AFR 73%    IFR 1%    1YR 22    5YR 333    Max Repair 100 MSP
Intended Deployment Time: 3 months    Spare Berths 2

62.5 EP Commercial Nuclear Thermal Engine (2)    Power 62.5    Fuel Use 13.26%    Signature 62.5    Exp 5%
Fuel Capacity 200,000 Litres    Range 63.1 billion km   (502 days at full power)

Active Search Sensor MR15-R100 (2)     GPS 3000     Range 15.0m km    Resolution 100
Geological Survey Sensors (3)   3 Survey Points Per Hour

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes

I'm working on tech right now to build beam fighters to station on my planet.  I'll also be working on a my first freighter to start hauling mass drivers and auto miners to start harvesting the various sources in the system.  I'll also be working on a Gravitational Survey ship before too much longer.

Oh, in 6.21, where do I go to design missiles?

Nevermind, found it.

Go to the Economies screen (F2) on the the bottom there is a button for Missiles.  That takes you to the design screen.

One thing I learned about Aurora, and it might not be obvious to others trying to get through the learning curve, is that on ships it's all about missiles. A good example to compare and wrap your brain around are the ships in the Honorverse. You have to get your envelope of engagement farther out than your opponent and missiles are the most practical way to do that.

QFT!  and a great example.  ECM and agility are key to your missiles.  though Ive played a few campaigns going for nothing but energy weapons.  with good enough batterins and armor you can bull through the missile envelops pretty well.
Jarhead - Yeah. You're probably right.

Gus - I use sweatpants with flannel shorts to soak up my crotch sweat.

Banzai Cat - There is no "partial credit" in grammar. Like anal sex. It's either in, or it's not.

Mirth - We learned long ago that they key isn't to outrun Star, it's to outrun Gus.

Martok - I don't know if it's possible to have an "anti-boner"...but I now have one.

Gus - Celery is vile and has no reason to exist. Like underwear on Star.

Just a hint, in the ship design, upper left, there is a box with deployment time. It defaults to 3 months but can be changed to anything. Increasing the time automatically adds crew compartments. I try to equalize fuel and deployment time. That way, crew morale doesn't start dropping (when you go I ER deployment time) while I still have 60% fuel

From what little I've seen on Aurora, the tech is very much inspired by modern naval tech.  So the missile thing isn't surprising.

I've wanted to dive full-bore into the game, but the learning curve would probably suck up more time than I'm willing to put into it right now.  Familiarization with the UI also looks to require some research too.  Despite being something I'd really enjoy once over the hump, I've not jumped yet.

Thanks, I did not know that.  FYI, I think I'm going to restart my game.  A few small lessons learned, and I'm not very far into it, so not a big deal at this point.

dont worry you will restart a few times more before getting the hang of it  :)

Don't be afraid to turn on SM to give yourself some tech and instant design components. That way,  You can catch up quickly to where you were when you ended the last game

The restart put me in a better position than my previous game.  I already got Ion Drives, Geological, and Gravitational Survey sensors.  Along with some good sensors.

One question, I can build Deep Space Tracking Stations right away.  Do I just need 1 or is there advantage to building more than one.

OJsDad

Ohh, and I have Jump Gate Construction 180 days.  Just need a ship yard big enough to build a ship with one.

as with all stations its the more the merrier.  your base sensor range for that planet will get larger and larger and larger.
