Silent Disapproval Robot

I saw a post about this game on a different forum today.  It looked a bit like Freepace/X-Wing crossed with World of Tanks/War Thunder so I thought I'd sign up and give it a try.

I'm still on the fence.  It might be fun.  I'm still learning how to play.  I wish they had joystick support.  I instinctively reach for my joystick.  Flying with mouse/keyboard just seems weird.

that vid doesn't make it look too enticing.  Looks like the guy just sat around and camped in a couple spots without doing much other than sniping someone coming into range.  The slow pace of the thing doesn't turn me off so much as the repetitiveness.

Also.. do they have English voice-overs or just that Bitchin Betty in Russian?  Bitchin' Boris??

After looking into it more, my interest is piqued.  It looks to be more of a capital ship oriented game, rather than some space fighter type of thing, so I'll check it out.

BTW.. thx for the heads-up SDR.  Despite my initial hesitation, it does look like something worth d'ling.

I thought of trying it out yesterday when it came out on Steam but the servers were either down or full.

Does it actually have any PvE content or is it simply an arena shooter "in spaaaaaaaace....."?

Seems to merely be World of Tanks in Space. :P

Nothing inherently wrong with that I guess...

Arena shooter IN SPAAACE!

It doesn't look bad, but my initial gameplay impressions have been rather 'Meh'.  There are supposed to be different game types other than the couple CTF style ones I tried out.

The ship customization is okay, as there are a small few different types of slots you can put modules or abilities in.  The actual gameplay is very much pulling up close to your target, keep them in your screen while you blast 'em with weapons and fire your MMO-like 'abilities' when needed.   At the moment, I think the PvP matches in STO are more enjoyable than what I've seen thus far.

I'll give it some more play time soon but I've not been blow away.

Silent Disapproval Robot

I've been blown away repeatedly.

Man, for an interceptor, my ship is a slug.  Everything passes me.  Asteroids have a higher top speed.

I've been messing around with different weapon loadouts and trying different support modules like jammers and AEGIS systems.  Seems OK so far but nothing really spectacular about it.

At the moment, I've been more interested in trying out The Banner Saga: Factions for some turn-based tactical FreeToP.

But they had some server issues today.

I tried it already. It's pretty meh.
Played the tutorial and a single battle against an online opponent.
The battle went in a very unexpected way with me beating the #### out of my opponent despite having no strategy or clue as to what I should be doing :P

I won't complain if I get some paraplegic strategy noob to beat up on.  At least, for awhile.

It just reminds me of Blood Bowl a bit, in a Viking warfare kinda way.  Although cartoonish-looking, I like the hand drawn art style.

Alas!  Their servers have evidentally been hammered pretty hard today so things aren't going so smoothly with their launch hosting.

As for Star Control, it reminds me of the apathy I had towards playing Mechwarrior Online.  Nice concept, looks okay.. just can't get into it much despite feeling like I should (and I keep firing it up).

Nefaro

Okay, I'm getting into Star Control a bit more.  At the moment.

Now that I'm getting more comfortable with the up/down/left/right thrusters, and using asteroids as cover, I'm improving.  I'd say the redeeming part of the whole thing is being able to utilize cover not only to block weapon fire but also to break locks.   There also looks to be specialized hull types you can mount Command, ECM, etc, Modules on so it does have some team-supporting stuff.

I've been enjoying this here & there.  You get a free 6 or 7 days worth of premium when you sign up.

It's not terribly complicated, and not having all the extra physics to contend with from something like War Thunder makes it more forgiving. I wouldn't enjoy this so much if the ship models didn't look so cool.  It's certainly WoT in space fighters.

EDIT:  Note that the games name in the US is Star Conflict.  I dunno if it's still labelled as Star Control in Europe but I think there was an old game named Star Control, that wasn't like this, amiright?

I wrestling with trying this.  I swore off any MMO-like earlier this year for a bunch of reasons.  The ships look cool though and I do like me some space combat.  As soon as I start thinking about this though I begin thinking that instead of this I should re-sub to EVE, and I just can't do that...
