Gosh Darn Saving Private Ryan!

Man, I love that movie....but it drives me nuts at the same time!  It was on this morning and of course I had to watch it......this movie along with Braveheart and the Patriot are my must watch movies when they show up on TV.  Every time I watch this movie, I then get into a huge mood of wanting to play a WWII game that can give the same excitement as the movie.  Sadly, nothing ever comes close to the same kind of small-squad tactical game that would satisfy me, but nonetheless is puts me back in the WWII mood.  I dream of a squad based game where you feel the emotions of the soldiers....give them personal bios/backgrounds and make you feel the pain when you actually lose one of them.

The ARMAs have various WWII mods.  You can customize your troops at bit.

CMBN actually is a good tactical game.  One of my favorite moments when it first came out came when I accidently ordered an entire US Parachute company to advance and about 100 little guys stoically went running into a little town in long files from all over the place.  Somehow it all worked out; a barrage fell behing them and they suppressed and overran a German MG.

In a related vein, I'm doing the 101 drop 15 km northwest of Eindhoven in Where Eagles Dare.  It's grand tactical (500 meters, 2 hours, companies), but has a lot of good flavor  -- German garrison troops, replacement tanks in a repair shop, tiny Kampfgruppes galore and of course the 101 parachuting in (over half the division landed pretty close to Eindhoven).

So there are a range of choices, though Dr. Strangelove is my favorite war movie.

It's better than Soldiers At War ever was.  Mod 'em out if that's what you wanna do.

It's the same X-Com style stuff, set in WW2.  But!  There is also a lot of destructible environment to be had.  It's nice being able to shoot through some walls, blow 'em up, etc.  Just be careful that the unknown person you hear on the other side of the door isn't a civvie before you go unloading the Bren through it.  ;D

Now I must get this game. Better than Soldiers at War!? Please let it be so!

This is a proper war movie.  It was a Disney series that got made into a theatrical release.
