Gosh Darn Saving Private Ryan!

Man, I love that movie....but it drives me nuts at the same time!  It was on this morning and of course I had to watch it......this movie along with Braveheart and the Patriot are my must watch movies when they show up on TV.  Every time I watch this movie, I then get into a huge mood of wanting to play a WWII game that can give the same excitement as the movie.  Sadly, nothing ever comes close to the same kind of small-squad tactical game that would satisfy me, but nonetheless is puts me back in the WWII mood.  I dream of a squad based game where you feel the emotions of the soldiers....give them personal bios/backgrounds and make you feel the pain when you actually lose one of them.

RO2 is free to play this weekend, if that's your thing.   

It's slowly growing on me.  :D  It's also occasionally nice when a few people use the integrated voice to coordinate instead of having oral diarrhea.   Considering the game is quite tactical and about as hardcore a shooter as I've seen, there has to be less punk-ass kids about on average.

Thanks, I already own it along with most WWII FPS...just not the same.  I want my soliders to have unique personalities and attributes to the degree that I actually care about them....I know I am just dreaming though.

I find movies like Saving Private Ryan have the opposite effect on me. I find movies like that bring the reality of war too close to home and it turns me off to small unit games for a while.

I cry at war movies but I hate The Patriot.  That time period has so many interesting and true stories;  hollywood just has to churn out this enormous
heap of steaming crap.  I did like the part where they burned the church even if it was a steal from the SS.  Disney's Swamp Fox with Leslie Nielson
as Francis Marion was so much better.  Especially the songs!!

I really liked the Brother in Arms series but could never win at them. Plus I'd get half my squad killed in one mission and then they'd be all alive again for the next one.

Afriend mentioned they had found SSI's old infantry battle game, Ambush, somehwere on the web.  It played well with dosbox.
The good thing about that game was each soldier, on both sides, did have a personality.

Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway...look no further.

Played the first two through, but not this one.  I enjoyed them - the scenery and sound effects were very atmospheric.  My only problem with them was that occasionally you'd suddenly realise that you were playing an action puzzle game, rather than a war game.

Brothers in Arms itself had a fight with a Panzer (a PIII iirc) which reminded me of a boss battle in Ocarina of Time:  you had to stay alive long enough to hit it with five fausts whilst it chased you round a farmyard.

Brothers in Arms is more like Band of Brothers which is the other Spielberg / Tom Hanks collaboration.
Highly recommended.

Hell's Highway has more mainstream FPS feel than the previous ones but it does serve to close the story.
