Red Line Crossed

Top-ranking lawmakers on both sides of the aisle declared Thursday that the "red line" in Syria has been crossed, calling for "strong" U.S. and international intervention after administration officials revealed the intelligence community believes chemical weapons were used.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Senate intelligence committee, were among those urging swift action.

McCain, who has long called for more involvement in Syria, voiced concern that the administration would use "caveats" to avoid acting on the new intelligence. He said America's enemies are paying "close attention" to whether the U.S. follows through, as the White House signaled it wanted to see more proof before responding to the new information.

"I worry that the president and the administration will use these caveats as an excuse not to act right away or act at all," McCain told Fox News. "The president clearly stated that it was a red line and that it couldn't be crossed without the United States taking vigorous action."

It looks like the "red line" has been crossed in Syria with the use of chemical weapons.  Why am I not surprised that nothing is being done and in fact they are trying to get around their earlier promise.  My first mistake was believing a politician would follow through on a promise.

We have no friends in Syria. I understand that we don't want chemical weapons used anywhere, but the red line statement should not have been made if it was not going to be backed up.

Don't know why we are so surprised that Syria would use chemical weapons again.  Been rumored for years they used them during the Hama uprising in the early 1980s.

In my view while it remains within the borders of Syria then let them settle it. Of course Iran will aid the current regime but should the West once again and especially the USA have to be the global police force. By all means help the opposition and arm them but keep Western forces off the ground. If it moves outside the borders of Syria then it is fair game.

From what I gather there aren't many groups in there that would do the West much good in the mid to long term.

Best case scenario is to let them all kill each other and facilitate that as best we can. It's a pretty cynical view considering the civilians caught in the mess, but from what I gather moderates are tough to find there.

Syria will end up either as a little brother of Iran, or more likely a second Iraq, where different factions control their clan territory and blow each others civilians up with car bombs placed in others faction Sugs, for years to come.
Sunni populations (74%) has the majority, but Al Querida is also an offspring of radical Sunni (frustrated Wahhabi's guys), so there has to be a close watch on all the different Sunni groups fighting there, and how they shift back 'n for in their attitude.

It make sense to support the most moderat Sunni (as long as they fight the radical Sunni) because the ongoing conflict also attract all kind of 'homegrown' secound-gen radical Muslims scum from our countries to join the fight of the radical overthere, who -with a little luck-, get killed and will never more generate a threat here.
Close attention has to be given to those 'fellow townsmen' who leave our western countries for so called 'family issues' abroad, and came back as a semi-trained battle-hardened and clinical-psychotic (from the war=hell experiences) Threat. 

Maybe certain 'townsmen', who left country for more then 2 weeks vacation, should not be let inside anymore without a very deep scan of possible attitude-change for a prolonged time and proved evidence of their activies abroad (like study, job, etc...)  ...Of course this will never happen cause of damn Political Correctness >:(

I find it hard to care about anyone in a country that would like to see me burn in hell on the best of days. The biggest shame of the Syrian civil war is when it spills over borders and hurts others.
