Did anyone ever play this game? I read something in Game Informer this month about how one of the prolific players accidentally jumped his capital ship into enemy space and the skirmish escalated into a battle involving 2400 people.

THAT is pretty awesome so the game has peaked my interest. I know it's quite old but it has a ton of subscribers? Any fans? I also like trading on the stock market so the thought of abusing price movements to enrich myself sounds appealing as well. The open-endedness (and ruthlessness) of the game is drawing me towards it.

yeah its great  :)

its the only game I know where players actively has been able to force the Company to change direction and rethink their priority via ingame Means.
its also possible to actively affect the World around you and pretty much do whatever you like.
You have people doing anything from having casinos and banks (which is pretty much the same these days  :)), being traders and manipulate the market. or going out and shoot other pilots if thats your thing.
All the economy is based on players so something like 95% of items in game is made by players

I enjoy reading of the truly dickish exploits of the amoral player base of the game, but playing the game itself is sloooooooooow.

I played it a very long time ago.  7 or 8 years ago?  I know people who still play it.  I can see how it might be pretty interesting, but I think
I'm don't have the attention span to play it.  Judging by my current gameplay, I need something with an obvious military objective to get blown up every few minutes (currently playing, ARMAIII, CLOD, Fall of the Samurai and Red Orchestra 2).

On the other hand EVE does seem to be a worthwhile game.  Even I played it for a week or two years and years ago.

This is the recent battle that was accidentally triggered and eventually dragged in over 3,000 players

I don't play EVE, but I do sometimes like reading the stories of game events.

"45 minutes of pooping Tribbles being juggled by a drunken Horta would be better than Season 1 of TNG." - SirAndrewD

"you don't look at the mantelpiece when you're poking the fire" - Bawb

"Can't 'un' until you 'pre', son." - Gus

I was in the beta and have played it on and off over the years.  I absolutely love it, I think it's a remarkable game and an utter joy to play.

HOWEVER.  It's also the biggest time-sink of them all.  You have to devote a lot of time to it to get the best out of it, and I just can't do that.  Every month the newsletter arrives in my inbox and every month it takes a real effort of will not to subscribe again. :)

I have posted about EVE before.
The short version is that I have a deep love for it, but I always end up quitting due to lack of focus.
EVE gives you what you put in and being in a decent Corp is a must for completing greater deeds.
If you do want to solo, then you need to have a strong focus and will. The game is slow.

I have never seen a community more engaged, though. They are truely an amazing bunch!
And with the recent graphical updates the game looks absolutely stunning as well.
"Pilots do not get paid for what they do daily, but they get paid for what they are capable of doing.
However, if pilots would need to do daily what they are capable of doing, nobody would dare to fly anymore."

GDS_Starfury

that video of the battle is truely epic in every sense of the term.
Jarhead - Yeah. You're probably right.

Gus - I use sweatpants with flannel shorts to soak up my crotch sweat.

Banzai Cat - There is no "partial credit" in grammar. Like anal sex. It's either in, or it's not.

Mirth - We learned long ago that they key isn't to outrun Star, it's to outrun Gus.

Martok - I don't know if it's possible to have an "anti-boner"...but I now have one.

Gus - Celery is vile and has no reason to exist. Like underwear on Star.

'We few, we happy few, we band of brothers'

'Clip those corners'

Recombobulate the discombobulators!

just imagine the brawl if WoT could do that!

QuoteIn the Battle of Asakai, 717,033,768,274 ISK worth of ships were destroyed -- or $24,921.30, converted to US currency. Let that figure sink in for a second.

LOL!

I, too, occasionally think about reactivating my sub for Eve but I usually only putter around doing missions & salvaging scrap from mob ships' debris for isk.  Gets pretty repetitive.

I just recently cancelled my subscriptions to EVE. I found myself only logging in to renew skills timing out. It isn't that I don't absolutely love the game, it's the best out there, I just don't have the time to play it properly. You must be able to play at least 20 hours a week to make it work. I was into manufacturing and marketing and couldn't sustain long term (years) the time I needed to keep my business running smoothly. The market is so dynamic and the devs throw a wrench into it on occasion with gameplay changes, one has to constantly adapt. One must adapt in combat as well, it seems as if the devs are constanly tweeking ships and systems.

Alright I downloaded the 2 week trial last night and started my space empire!

That was dumb... it's a weeknight.

8 hours later I have a pretty good feel for the basics (and I'm at work pretty much without sleeping...). As an absolute newbie there are volumes of information to absorb. Coming from Wargames I know how to give games their due time so the 8 hour investment didn't bother me. I guess the only con I'd gripe about has already been mentioned: the game is slow and given its scope I am afraid I may not have enough time during the week to truly enjoy the full experience. At the end of the two week trial I'll probably be faced with the dilemma of making EVE the only game I play seriously (or play 75% of the time) or dropping it entirely so I can continue to spread the gaming wealth across many other titles. Decisions decisions. This game may have everything I need to get truly addicted to.

The UI is amazing though. You can tell they've put years upon years of development into making the UI intuitive and easy to use. That I picked up almost immediately and given the number of windows you're opening and closing - that's important.

Hey for the retired EVE players you mind signing on one last time to dump your cash and assets on to me?  ;D ;D ;D

EVE is awesome.  I am impressed you picked up the UI so fast.
