Let's Talk: Wargame or Not

The reality is that because there is no overarching controlling authority on "what is a wargame?" there will never be any sort of official definition. This does not mean we are having a useless discussion.

No, there's no official definition but we could end up with one :P

But let's just be careful that we don't stray into attacking other people for disagreeing.

OK.  Distant Worlds.  Wargame or not?  It's a good example of something with components of what has been discussed so far and is something outside of the historical catagory.

Not a wargame. Same for any 4x game. The main focus of the game is not war. War is not required to win the game.

Hmmm....see I struggle with 4X games.  I guess that's why there is the concept of a grand strategy game, which could or could not be catagorized as a wargame.

Not quite, I like FPS games, I suck at them but I like playing them. Still not a wargame.

that depends.  Steel Beasts is most definetly a wargame whereas World of Tanks is not.
