Just a heads up, it is available on Steam right now.
Pre-purchase is supposed to grant immediate alpha access.

I noticed that today and was looking for this thread to post.  I will probably jump in on the alpha tonight.  I'm such a sucker for space 4x.

Space Sector has a first look at the alpha:  http://www.spacesector.com/blog/2012/05/endless-space-alpha-first-look-preview/.

I'm going to look this over and then probably pre-order the Admiral Edition.  I don't fancy having my face on a wall in Paris ;)

Looks like they'll be taking pre-orders starting next week.

http://www.spacesector.com/blog/2012/04/endless-space-pre-orders-next-week/

p.s. With the 25% discount, the prices come out to be:

22.49€/~$30 for the Admiral Edition
26.24€/~$35 for the Emperor Special Edition

Interestingly Steam's pre-order prices are showing as

$22.49 for the Admiral Edition
$26.24 for the Emperor Special Edition

Maybe I'll have to get the Emperor Edition after all....

I believe Steam has the game currently on a "sale".
In any case, the price in Euros is probably for Europeans (Steam loves charging Europeans in Euros rather than in USD).

Those of you who play the alpha/beta, please share with us your thoughts & impressions.  I think this game may make me give up my Steam "virginity" for good, but I want to know I'm not giving it up if it's just going to leave me the next morning!  (Sorry for the tortured metaphor...)

The Alpha that is available plays more like a Beta.  All that is missing is multi-player, and three playable races. Of course there are balance issues to be addressed, as well as tightening up the code.  But it's much more playable and feature complete than Alphas that were released as finished product at twice the cost <cough>SoTS2<cough>.

I had time to play a couple of turns and look at the tutorial screens - but based on that very brief time, I'm liking what I see. I guess you can only play as human, and can't select random races to play against, but I chalk that up to it being an alpha.

That is great news! I booted up the alpha because I thought I was pre-ordering and then Steam started downloading something, so I wanted to see what it downloaded. But I didn't get a chance to play yet. I went ahead with the Emperor's edition, as it was like $4 more, but I don't exactly know what that means.
