I have nothing to contribute to this thread, but I have to admit that I've kept coming back to it out of a sick fascination to know where it would ultimately end up.  I wasn't disappointed.  I think the best single word forum post I've ever seen is:

As far as RoF would anyone agree that I should stop being so hung up on the tutorials and just try some combat missions? I'm starting to think I'm an idiot with people posting 'WTF is so hard about RoF?'

If you want we can try and do a session in the New Wings server this weekend.. one of the servers 'did' have a scenario where you just play co-op against ai bots... good for training with others.. not sure if it's still like that..

Yes.

It's a game- you don't really die.

Put your lift vector on the bad guy and pull until he's in your gunsight.  Then squeeze the trigger.  Couldn't be easier.

Oh, and stick to German planes (Pfalz and D7 are nice planes) until you get the hang of it.
