Instrument approaches and departures would be a great help.  On my list of things to learn have been instrument landings.  Most of my flight simming has been bush flying.

PanzersEast

A couple of things I will be using:

Plan-G
http://www.tasoftware.co.uk/
I use this for all my General Aviation flight for IFR and VFR.  It is free and a great tool and we will be planning our flight with it.

AirCharts
http://skyvector.com/

Take your pick as there are many places to pull these from.

Today we will be flying a Cessna 172RG from LFST - STRASBOURG ENTZHEIM to LSZW - Thun Airport.  The flight should take us about 1:15 min with a distance of 149 NM.   I want to keep this fairly straight forward and not get off into a lot of details so..... I tried to avoid restricted airspace as much as possible but when you look at the map we will have to get clearance from ATC to transition through Class C airspace around Zurich.  Let's look at our flight plan and then talk about the departure.

We will be departing on Runway 05 and taking the SUL departure.  So we want to look at the SID for LFST and see what we can expect.

So looking at the SID we will take off on RWY 05 and then fly a heading of 048 deg and once we are 20 NM from LFST we will turn to a heading of 129 deg to intercept the SUL VOR.  Looking at the notes from the SID to verify.

So to setup we will tune NAV 1 to the inbound radial of SUL VOR of 116.1 with a CRS of 103.  Since we want to track our distance after we take off we will measure tune NAV 2 to the outbound LFST ILS/DME 05 of 108.55 as below and setup the DME equipment on board by turning it to NAV 2.  As I leave the airport I should see my distance from LFST displayed on the DME so at 20 NM I will turn.  (Please note that when intercepting a VOR you may have to fly across the VOR path then turn to the VOR heading)

Once we reach the SUL we will tune NAV 1 to 114.3 with a CRS of 191 and turn to intercept the TRA (TRASADINGEN) VOR. (We will also need transition clearance to enter airspace around Zurich about 36 NM from the SUL VOR.)  I will then switch my DME to NAV 1, however not all VORs are dual equipped with DME and VOR so just be aware.... but there is no problem with that.  As we approach the VOR even if we are not aware of how close we are, once we overtake the VOR our arrow which should be pointing straight ahead will flip to point to the tail of the plane indicating it is behind us.  So we will fly a distance of 42 NM from SUL to TRA.  Now we can tune in our next VOR into Nav 2 which will be WIL (WILLISAU) at 116.9 and CRS heading 214 so we are ready or we can just tune it into NAV 1 once we overtake the TRA VOR.

You may notice that once we hit the WIL VOR there is just the airport with no other VOR to reference to fly to the airport.  The plan says we should turn our heading to 205 and fly 28.2 NM to intercept LSZW, however with wind etc... how will we know we are close?

Well, if the WIL VOR has DME  we will stay tuned in to that on our NAV instruments and just like the airport when we took off we will use the WIL Outbound to measure our distance from the VOR.  So, when we intercept the WIL VOR, we will keep it tuned into our NAV and then turn on a heading of 205 and measure our distance from the VOR to gauge how close we are to the Airport.  Of course we will be keep visual reference around us as we fly as well.

I hope that was somewhat clear on what our flightplan is and how we will approach it.

It's out!  :D  My virtual airline does not fly this yet.  No real airline does.  So I'm not buying.  But it's cool.

jomni

Releasing on 18 December.

Not sure if it fixes anything or will it take in existing add-ons.   This is being published by the guys behind Train Simulator 2015.  Speculation is that it might just be normal FSX.  No improved except multilayer support lol!

Tuna

Would our add ons install I wonder? Probably not.. but that would be awesome if it was to be upgraded to take care of modern hardware, but work with all the add ons that we invested in this game... Jeez, for a cheapskate, I sure spent a lot of money on this game/genre!

Staggerwing

How much is it going to cost? Will it be the Gold edition?

Nothing really rocks and nothing really rolls and nothing's ever worth the cost...

FYI.. Carenado sale going on, except for the 'new' planes.. except one mistake

flightsimstore has the glass cockpit Seneca V on sale by accident. This is a brand new plane that usually goes for 37 bucks I think.. I got it for 11..

Not sure how long it will be up there at that price, I think it's a mistake.. None of the other stores have 'that' plane on sale..

That same store also has Orbx on sale until I think Jan 2..

jomni

FSX Steam version is out.  And it's just $5!!!!!!  Original price is $25.

A lot of positive reviews so far and they say it is more stable than the original.

Not sure about add-on compatibility.  Time will tell.

Don't say I didn't warn you.  Some talk about the add-ons issue:

Tuna

Maybe this will fix the Judge's issues. ORbx says their stuff works

jomni

Already told judge. He said  he will buy and the price is so insignificant and won't hurt even if the add-ons don't work.

Staggerwing

I bought as well. I hope this it based on the FSX 'Gold' release.

I bought as well. I hope this it based on the FSX 'Gold' release.

It is...plus here are the additions and fixes beyond the gold release....

Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition Change Log
The below change log represents the key changes made to FSX: Gold Edition to create FSX: Steam Edition.

General
* FSX: Steam Edition is now built using the VS2013 compiler for better optimisation and performance. (Still makes use of VS2005 libraries for backwards compatibility.)
* Updated splash, launcher and mission preview images for FSX:SE versions.

Multiplayer, networking and communications
* Gamespy networking now replaced by new Steam networking.
* Game chat now integrated with Steam chat
* Friends/Banned lists now integrated with Steam.
* Game invites now use Steam.
* Host networking defaults to a single port 6112.
* Host networking uses 27016 for Steam Master Server Browser.
* Host timeout (loss of connection to host) now 35 seconds by default (was 55).
* "Disconnected" message dialog now retained on screen for 4 mins before automatic dismissal (was 30 secs).
