I had my first communication on VATSIM tonight.  In the past I've just listened in, but I finally got the courage to give it a whirl.  I made a lot of mistakes, but the controller was patient and encouraging.

I think I'm hooked!  :)

However, in my fumbling around on the radio and transponder I'm sure my passengers all vomited all over my little Twin Otter...  Plus my nervousness on radio comms made my landing look like one of those C-130 steep approaches into Iraq/Afghanistan.  I didn't know how to call a missed approach...so down we were going!

Real life ATC is so fun. Even if you fumble around and miss the protocol. People are generally tolerant.  I rarely get practice with missed approaches. Just tell ATC you are "going around" and they will direct you.

You're a braver man than I.. with my partial deafness, I'm too much of a scaredy cat to take off in VATSIM. They say you can type, but that wouldn't be realistic..

You might try it Tuna.  I'm still developing my "radio ear" so there was a lot of "Say again?" coming from me.  I was flying from Unalakleet to Shaktoolik talking to Anchorage center though, so not a terribly large amount of other traffic for the ATC to deal with.

I'm WAY too chicken to fly in the high density places with Center/Approach/Ground to deal with.  I can't even imagine switching channels while on approach just yet.

So airliner pilots are not cool because they fly big steel birds, but rather they are radio heroes? ;) Interesting perspective! Never looked at it that way.
But that basically means they would be cool because they can multi-task of sorts, something women are known to be masters in...
Following this logic; So in retrospect pilots are all pussies?  ;D O:-)
"Pilots do not get paid for what they do daily, but they get paid for what they are capable of doing.
However, if pilots would need to do daily what they are capable of doing, nobody would dare to fly anymore."

In your dreams, perhaps!

Most (disclaimer: I certainly do *not* say all) women pilots I know are 'one of the guys'-types...  :smitten:  :coolsmiley:

Not very sexy at all, nope.

Have any of you tried FSEconomy?  I flew my first 2 flights yesterday, it was a lot of fun.

Yes but I grew tired.  It is good for GA flying.  But I'm not a GA-type of person.
It is indeed fun flying small aircraft, and into small airports, for a change.
Yet ultimately, it is not my type of simming.

I don't know if it is new or not, but they have generated flights for 727's and 737-800's.  I'm more of a regional fan myself because my flying time is very short until my kiddos get bigger.

Nope.  Not new.

FSEconomy is amazing.  I'm discovering new airports, new planes....its awesome.  I just leased a Twotter about 2000 miles from the airport I like to operate out of, I'm looking forward to spending this week jobbing my way back to my Alaska base.  :)

Glad you liked it.  Obscure airports with no ILS, Towers etc. can indeed be fun and challenging.

Jomni do you think Prepar3d is worth the price to upgrade from FSX?  I would qualify for the Academic license as a teacher.  I got a lot of crashes in FSX these days, I feel like it is something about my Saitek X52 Pro because it seems to only do it when I'm interacting with the joystick.  Like coming off autopilot as soon as I touch the stick sometimes it'll crash.  But sometimes its just random.

I've read Prepar3d is less crashy.

Tuna

my two crash types were fixed by

installing FSUIPC (the free version)

and copying the older uiautomationcore.dll into my fsx folder..

I have not had a crash since and it's been many months
