Cool stuff, Bes.

Thanks for sharing.

I'm especially interested in the dazzle camo schemes. I like to file those away for use on minis from time to time.

Yeah the one on the Bismark with the fake bow and stern wakes.

LongBlade

That is cool. I hadn't gotten to the Bismarck yet. I never understood the purpose of the black and white lines. They don't seem to disrupt much. It's interesting but I question the value.

The bow and stern, though, could easily conceal accurate range, I'd think. That is clever.

the lines break up the outline and throw off speed estimation.  thats why youll often see false bow waves with contrast at the bow and stern of the ship.  quite useless today with radar and whatnot but it was effective with the optic ranging of the time.
Jarhead - Yeah. You're probably right.

Gus - I use sweatpants with flannel shorts to soak up my crotch sweat.

Banzai Cat - There is no "partial credit" in grammar. Like anal sex. It's either in, or it's not.

Mirth - We learned long ago that they key isn't to outrun Star, it's to outrun Gus.

Martok - I don't know if it's possible to have an "anti-boner"...but I now have one.

Gus - Celery is vile and has no reason to exist. Like underwear on Star.

If I remember correctly, from a show I watched eons ago, it's called dazzle paint scheme. It's supposed to make it very difficult to judge distances in a rolling sea, by not giving you an continuous surface to make your judgement by.
Having never served on a ship I can't comment on how effective it is.

EDIT DOH! Ninja'd....  :P

LongBlade

I understand dazzle and really like it; I'm just not clear how effective the lines in the middle would be. They seem too little, but maybe that's the point.

Most other dazzle schemes appear to work well.

notice how the stern and bow are not only painted out but both have bow waves.  those line in the middle are supposed to mimic false sterns of the ship in either direction.  I know it seems like it wouldnt make sense with the superstructure but they try and make it look like the ship is foreshortened and traveling at an angle.  at sea, from a periscope it makes more visual sense that a broadside photo while the shit is at rest.

I'm not making myself clear.

I understand how dazzle works. I believe it works. I *love* the bow and stern paint scheme. It's a stroke of genius.

However, I don't believe those middle stripes make any difference, though your angle theory is interesting. I don't buy it, though. They've done nothing to distort the superstructure.

if youre trying to get a fix for torpedos your looking at the hull.
the whole idea is to throw off optical range estimation.  so with a shortened hull, false waves, false sterns in the middle and untouched superstructer all while the ship is manuvering how precise are you going to be from a bobbing submarine pericsope?

and just to beat a dead horse its a glamour shot of the ship at rest on a nice day.  its kinda like looking at a MURDOC scheme M1 on the parade ground and commenting that you can still see it.   ;)

That photo makes my point. The German scheme is to minimalist.

This is much better.
