Wow I'm only at page 65 of the 288 page (first) manual and there are so many nuggets of information on how play well like statistical results, optimal number of units, faction strategies.
It is very overwhelming fascinating at the same time.  Too many things to remember.  With this kind of content, Manual 1 and Manual 2 may stand the test of time.  But Manual 3 "Rules as Coded" will surely be outdated in due time.

I have read some of the in-game picture tutorials but there are still more to go.   Then on to the interactive and video tutorials.

Are there any introductory gameplay videos online that we can watch or are they only available with the game?

I can show restraint!   Can't I  ???

I've been expecting you to buckle like a belt.  Then I could give you shit after purchasing a game that isn't really a game.  That would be the ultimate buckle!  :P

The "extreme" pull I generally feel for a newly released game is now gone. PHEW!

I don't mind telling you - that was one hell of a week! ::)

On previous experience this now means my money is saved and I am unlikely to purchase the game. Only if I read about it would I likely change my mind and buy it. But given I don't generally read up on games before purchasing on release day, that is very unlikely. As time goes by, I also begin to think about the impact of the cost too. I think I'm safely out the woods now.

So I would like to take this opportunity to thank Matrix/Slitherine for listening to their "stats" and reading their "figures" properly and understanding that none of their income comes from impulse purchasing. They certainly seem to have a grip on the market...they actually really seem to know their stuff.

And here was me, all these years, thinking I knew different, throwing money at them on release day for games I didn't want. So thank you Matrix/Slitherine for saving my money and not taking advantage of my illness.

It's going fine for me. I'm posting at Matrix when I have questions and making slow but steady progress. I wish I had more time to play it as I'm sure things would go faster, but I have to do my For the People AAR for my website. There are always too many great games to play. It's tough being a gamer.  :'(

I'm enjoying it also, which surprises me a little.. I was a little worried I'd thrown money down the drain.  However, i've enjoyed watching the tutorials, reading the ones in the game, doing the interactive ones... The manual leaves a little to be desired, but I think that's because it follows the boardgame one pretty closely.  It's not that the information isn't there, it's just that it's not always all that clear, and sometimes you come up with questions that aren't explained until 40 pages later.   Ground combat is pretty simple.  Air, not too bad.   Naval is where it gets tricky, especially with naval air, plus all the optional rules, a lot of which give the game the fun chrome.

That said, he did a wonderful job making information available in the game, and the interface actually is pretty good for this big of a game.  A little quirky at times, and rough, but good.   My biggest complaint so far is that it's a little.... clinical.   Sterile at times, if you know what i mean.  I really could use some polishing from that standpoint.  But there's a lot of game here, and I'm shocked that it might actually be interesting solo.   ("Fun" might be too strong of a word, unless you're really into solitaire play like this).  But I don't regret the purchase, and might even try to find an online game with another n00b at some point.

Just went to the Matrix forums myself and found very little posted so far.  Not sure why? The game intrigues me though it is way outside my affordable price range.  I haven't felt this way since the boardgame heyday of the late 70's-early 80's when the 'monster' games became very popular.

If i had to guess, it's because people are muddling through the tutorials and manuals, and are hesitant to flood the forums with questions.  I know personally I've got lots of questions, but I'm trying to solve them myself before going there.  Or maybe it just didn't really sell well outside of the people stalking the forums for years who already know how to play.

The game really does start to make sense after playing around a bit, and I think the complexity will quickly shift from "how do i even play" to "how do i play well".   I have a lot of respect for how much effort Steve put into translating this badboy.  Soooooooooooo many phases and subphases.  It's a coders nightmare.

Edit:  on a seperate note, the AI is going to be a real challenge for this game, which is probably why it's an optional, paid (important key). future add-on.  If it never sees the light of day, no one can say they didn't get exactly what they paid for.   Also, I can see why PBEM is going to be a nightmare.  Very very chatty play sequences.

'cos the same numpties are still locking horns with people that want an answer why Matrix forced manuals and therefore excessive shipping costs onto people.

And here was me thinking they'd want to play the game they just blew $160 on!  ;D
