Gaming Satisfaction

Lately I have returned to Skyrim and found that being a vampire is not nearly as cool as everyone told me it would be. I reached the final stage and could not go out during the day for fear of being lynched and the sun burned my red retinas. So, I wanted to become part of regular dark elf society again.

Well it was no easy feat. I invested about 10 hours into real research and in-game traveling (about 3 weeks worth in game time), learned new spells, boosted my sneaking and feeding abilities, and visited horrific new locales while trying to finally get the cure. The search for the cure turned into a game within the game itself.

At long last, yesterday evening at about midnight in real time (appropriately)...I was finally cured. It was difficult and I did have the option to pull up the game console to just edit out my vampirism, but I'm glad I didn't take that way out.

It has been a long time since an RPG or any computer game for that matter had me writing notes, consulting maps, figuring out spells and charting paths. For this reason alone I would recommend Skyrim. Along the way to getting rid of the vampire plague I pulled in a few new, very interesting side quests and decided I want to take lycanthropy for a spin now. If you've played only 30-40 hours of Skyrim and got bored, try again and go back. It is amazing how this game opens up.

After I clear up my backlog, I intend to go back and play my stealth character.

I got my gaming satisfaction from beating Mass Effect 2 on the night Mass Effect 3 released and taking that save and jumping immediately into the ME3 story. I'm glad I waited (and got ME2 for like $5) because there was no lag between the two stories and I remembered every detail because it literally happened the week before. ME3 has excellent character drama. The battles are a bit silly, but the cutscenes and story are phenomenal. I don't get emotional easy, but I'll admit there were parts I was angry, sad, excited, and anxious. I event did some boring collection quests to make sure and get enough support so that I would get the best ending and have the people I wanted to survive, survive. I usually have gaming ADD, but I didn't here - I was focused and worked to achieve a goal. And the payoff was awesome (well, the last 5 minutes or so was less so, but the rest of the ride was well worth the effort).

The latest edition of PC Gamer has an entire section on Skyrim mods, character perks and useful NPC's, spells and racial/character combos. Looks like you can excel at almost any type or race.

Good tale of satisfaction there SoM...that would have made me all warm inside too.

I haven't even looked at the mods available for Skyrim yet...it would boggle my mind.

Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy and Commonwealth module and the complete Combat Mission: Shock Force. The tactical strategery is exactly the level of wargaming I most enjoy. Sure it's fun to plot the overarching operational and strategic plans from time to time, but I get the most satisfaction from tactical planning. Timing artillery strikes to coincide with an assualt on objective that when it works out according to plan is priceless. Or the OH $H!T! My plan just went to hell what do I do next really tests ones ability to quickly and creatively overcome an obsticle.

CIV 5. I had written this one off awhile back as fun, but not engrossing. However I've logged some serious time recently and I can honestly say that the game, for me, is really starting to turn into a gem. Here's to hoping Kings and Gods continues to refine the game.

Left4Dead 2. Some days I just want to shoot zombies to blow off steam. Very satisfying.

Fun but not engrossing, I like that. I am fortunate to say that the last two games I really got into (Skyrim, Shogun 2) were both fun and very engrossing. I mean, I thought about them all the time. The Skyrim vampire debacle too it to the next level.

I was thinking about picking up Skyrim again. Just got bored after I had enough cash to buy my big house and stock it...just didnt seem to be much point. I think Im in the mood again. luckily, I brought over an old save after I got a new rig. Hope it works

I've got the PS3 version of the game and ever since I lost my one and only save file I never had the heart to start all over again.

It's not that I got bored with the game, it's just that having to do all of those beginning quests all over again really bums me out. I really want to play again but just can't seem to get over this. Doc, do you have any good medicine for me? I've fallen and I can't get Skyrim up.

Yeah, for me, I need to have a goal. themain quest didnt grab me so my goal was to by a cool house. Once I bought the big expensive house and furnished it, I was like "ok, so now why am I collecting gold and loot again? After all, I can craft better stuff than i find..."

The crafting aspect was pretty cool.

Or, aren't there a whole host of entry level quests to do? Also you could create a totally different avatar which should affect what happens in your new game.

Your worst problem is playing on a console, however :)

Ok so in just three short but deadly paragraphs you give some great advice. Now I can take care of my personal problem, revisit some entry level sidequests, and create a completely different avatar from what I had (which was a Khajit male who was pretty cool btw).

And finally, your comment about Skyrim and consoles brings a chuckle to me, albeit stifled lest my co-workers around me discover what I really do at my desk on a Wednesday afternoon!
