When is the Ogre Designer Edition Going on Sale?

Hey All,

Does anybody know when Steve Jackson is going to be releasing that new boxed edition of Ogre (Designer Edition IIRC)? The website says it is "in production" but I can't find a ship date. I thought it was supposed to be out by October?

It looks like the copies for those that bought in on the kickstarter campaign are receiving their copies now:

I don't know when FLGS's will get copies for sale or when the game will be available for purchase online. That part of kickstarter I don't quite understand; do they produce just the games needed to fulfill the orders for those that kickstarted or do they make additional copies if funding permits for additional sales? I guess that is up to the producer of each kickstarter program.

I didn't get in on it while it was being offered on kickstarter but I wished I had. Instead, I jumped in on Up Front :-X (lol - just to piss Grimnirsson off! heehee!)

Ah, okay. If the KS people are just getting it now, I guess we can expect the general public to be able to get theirs in a month or so.

I think we can fully expect to see this new Ogre made available to everyone. I think it would be highly unusual to kickstart a new product but only sell it to the original backers. And seeing how the Ogre KS program blew the lid off of the fundraising project, I think SJ sees that there is a huge demand for it again amongst gamers. Lastly, the SJ website has the new Ogre with a recommended retail price of $100, so that seems to confirm it is going to be sold to everyone at some point. Can't wait!

Neither did I. It is the only KS project I really regret not getting in on as I am such a fan of the game going back to the 16-bit game version. But I didn't have the funds, and I remain leery of KS projects as a rule. Oh well. Glad other people were able to help get this project off the ground and into the stratosphere by all accounts (I recall SJ saying that based on the KS project, Ogre is going to be around for a "long time" now. 8)

I'd be curious to know what that big box of goodness is going to retail for. Did you watch that "unwrapping" video*? That is one HUGE box that must weigh quite a bit for shipping purposes.

The website says $100, which seems about right. Didn't watch the vid yet, though. Must take a look. :D

I am glad to see that SJ has brought back the Ogre Pocket edition. I still have mine from the last run so many years ago. I also have a set of Ogres miniatures that I completed two years ago (my first minis project). I have to get them out and do an AAR one day.

I'm surprised that they list it for just $100. That box is HUGE and IIRC, that's about what the kickstarter guys got in on it for. But of course, they got all of the stretch rewards and free shipping. I'll have to keep an eye for it once it is available for sale.

Actually, I believe I've read that Ogre is now sold out at the distributor level. So there's no guarantee of how many copies are still in the pipeline. And once they're gone...they're gone.

I'd maybe confirm that he can still get a copy before tossing in an order.

Good point. Chris at NWS is very customer friendly and will tell you if he has any or not. Great guy and great service.

I just checked TheWarStore.com and it says that it is still at Pre-Order status with a release window of 12/4 (they are selling it at $79.99, so NWS still wins :) ). So maybe there is still time to get in on this. I plan too. :)

Haven't had much time to actually play any minis or board games yet (albeit, I just put a finishing touch on my grunts for Tomorrow's War first scenario), but I think I am going to be happy to return to a genre I abandoned around 2001 for the allure of PC games. :-\ The wheel has now turned as I think video games are stagnant/dying while board/minis are having a renaissance.

Your mentioning of Tomorrow's War got me interested in Force on Force again. My largest complaint with the game; those dang "rules". The Osprey books look great with cool illustrations and nice color but they are NOT rulebooks in the sense that I like rules (give me the old SPI "CASE" or Avalon Hill's rulesbooks any day). So what I've been doing is making my own rewrite of the rules in rules format and not the in paragraph "loose" style that they were written in. Here's a screenshot of what I have written so far:

But I don't want to stray too far off topic. If you'd like to start a thread for Tomorrow's War/Force on Force, I'd be happy to chat with the group about it. As far as Ogre goes - I'd love to just find a cheap copy of the original (not the little "pocket" game, but the first print of the full board game). I think that huge kit would just be overkill for the few times that I'd play it. However, my son thinks that it looks like a cool game so any board wargame that he shows interest in, I'm all over it so who knows. I'll have to see if Chris at NWS has copies in stock and see if the shipping doesn't cost as much as the game itself.

Did you ever get a shipping notice? Do they have the game?
