Good article about one of the greatest series of games ever. No One Lives Forever I and II.  Easily on my top 5 games of all time list. So wish they would make a sequel. Awesome 1960s spy movie vibe. Great fps gameplay, humorous dialogue,  awesome soundtrack.

Wow... what a coincidence... I was just about to load up NOLF2 on my Surface Pro 2, assuming I can get a virtual CD working.  Loved the first one, and never got far into the 2nd one for some reason.  I think maybe at the time it didn't run well on my machine, but I don't remember for sure.

Yeah, I liked those 2 games very much as well.

Very few games came anywhere near the charm and and fun these 2 had.

Adored the first game; my rig didn't have the hardware to run the second game and then had too much of the wrong hardware to run it, sigh -- so I've never played the second.

As far as Gaming's Greatest Unsung Heroine, while Cate ranks up there, and I love Rynn too (from the Drahken series), I'm going to go with the main character (whose name I can't even remember anymore--how's that for unsung!) from the Wheel of Time game, a FPS based on the first Unreal engine. (The game had almost nothing to do with the plot of Robert Jordan's novels aside from being set in the same milieu; it's plot is exclusively different in that the stories cannot exist together.)

She's literally just a secretary, someone who not only has no combat experience AT ALL, but who is effectively regarded as a cripple by her peers because she can't channel magical effects more than the barest trickle sufficient to stay a member of the Aes Sedai. Nevertheless, when an agent of the Shadow steals a rare hidden magical artifact from her office (whom she's unable to stop because NO COMBAT CAPABILITIES AT ALL), she chooses out of loyalty to her boss to chase him into the worst places in the world to recover the artifact (because it's supposed to be secret and no one else can learn of its existence for various plot reasons). This leads to a number of very well-designed levels in the original Unreal engine which wasn't so great at being able to throw large numbers of enemies at the player so the design team had to rely on cleverness and wit to keep the tension and player interest running. The game design also allows the devs to set up a first-person shooter scenario, since she can channel enough to use magical objects she runs across, but rarely has anything like enough ammo/charges for, and these slowly unlock over the game. It plays (and feels) rather like a survival-horror consequently.

Not sure if it runs on modern computers (i.e. WinVista onward), and it's hard to find nowadays (probably because TOR and/or RJ's estate has the rights to it and it doesn't fit the plot of the novels at all), although the soundtrack (which could be easily ripped from the game CD) was later re-issued separately as, supposedly, the musical score to the novels.

This forum has done it again, took me a few hours to find it but am now installing NOLF GOTYE, I had the boxed copy but the GOTE had all the updates in one package, love the way you can revisit the levels with all the equipment from later levels as they were designed with that in mind.
IMO Kate put Lara to shame with her depth of character, real shame this game never really got the full recognition it deserves, the second one is more polished and very good but the first one is just a pure 100% classic.
