Guardians of the Galaxy

I feel your pain insofar as the comics are concerned. I've tried a couple of times to get back into it over the last 10 or so years, and I'm totally lost.

This last time I went to the comic store, I took my daughter, and the guy recommended a DC graphic novel for her, "The New 52," which he explained was a reboot. Then I thought, Et Tu, DC? I always thought Marvel was the impossible-to-follow universe, but after that experience and what you said, MD, I'm seeing it's not exclusive to one universe.

Though honestly I was never much of a DC fan. I did enjoy the hell out of the JLA comics from '90 or so though - good humor all around.

I forget the name of the Green Lantern who was in the JLA around that time, but he was always good for a laugh.  Guy Gardner!  That's it!  And Batman would always keep him down.

Yes! Guy was a TOTAL jerk, but oh man he was hilarious. Poor Martian Manhunter, trying to deal with that as well as the other psychos.

I remember thinking how cool it was at the time that they had a Soviet superhero (albeit a powered-suit one) in the group too. I can't recall his name though.

Dammit, now I want to re-read that series. :)

I'm totally out of touch with all the newer heroes as well as villians. And never heard of the Guardians until now but I like what I see even if the women are green and it has Metal-Head in it. The 60's and 70's were my comic book era. Sgt. Rock, Enemy Ace, The Haunted Tank, and practically all of the Marvel Heroes. I hear Stan Lee's health is not good. Anybody hear anything new on this?

Well, Stan's 91 and he had a pacemaker put in back in 2012, so....

I can remember trying to chase down some old GofG issues based on seeing Yondu in the The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe and thinking he looked pretty badass.  That was '83 or so when the first edition of The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe was released.  It was a bitch trying to find those when I was living in Germany at the time and contact with mail-order places in the US was kinda tough.

^ LOL...is that the book that details Marvel characters? I still think I have a copy of one of those somewhere. It might be at my mom's house...she never threw any of my books away after I moved out oh so long ago...

it started as a 12-issue series

then there was a supplement

then an updated series

then a book

then a series of books

and then they realized it was pretty hopeless because they were creating new characters faster than they could release the books.

the one that was a ton of fun was the GI Joe Order of Battle comics that did the same thing for the Joes.  Issue #2 included Rocky Balboa as a member of the GI Joe team - and whether it was Larry Hama being too much of a fan or a licensing deal that fell through, they had to run a retraction in the next issue...

I remember ALL of those Joes. I even read the comic. I didn't collect them but my best friend at the time did. It was great fun to read but had animated series levels of stupidity at times, like seeing their frogman (can't recall his codename) running around Washington, DC in full SCUBA gear, including flippers, as they battled COBRA.

Never had those specialist figures. In fact I was quite limited growing up. Oh how I wanted the USS Flagg, though.

Saw Guardians last night. Absolutely fantastic! Everything I expected it to be. Loads of fun. Will likely see it a second time while it's in theaters.

safe for an 11-year-old?  Bayonet Jr has expressed and interest, and I'd rather see that one than another butchering of TMNT

Borderline. Depends on where you fall with these things. It's PG-13, mainly for the level of violence and the crude language/gestures. The physical violence is more intense and less cartoon-ish than what you saw in Avengers. There is no nudity and the sexual innuendo is tame.

As I was watching, I kept thinking about whether I would let my kids watch it. They're 9 & 5 and I'm comfortable letting them watch many of the recent Marvel films. Mostly I see them as live-action cartoons. However, I'm leaning against letting them watch Guardians until they're a little older. If it were me, I'd probably be okay with an 11-yr old watching it.
