Looks stupid. We're never going to get a proper 40k game.

I don't think its Slitherine.

You know for all my cynicism, this is out on Steam as a beta, and I've just put two hours into it, and I think I like it! I'm ashamed to say.

It's a defensive lane game, with only a hint of Plants vs Zombies, its more a war of attrition. Slow paced, pumping of space marines into the lanes to block incoming orks, and to overwhelm them to take out their resource tents, and crash the boards at the other end.

There are three troops dispensers, the droppod - normal marines, the rhino, devastator marines, and the dropship with assault/jumppack marines. You have 5 lanes, you'll need two in comms arrays to gather the resources needed to pull in new troops, but the actual dispensers can be switched to store your points mode, for higher quality perks, such as marines on motorbikes, or man-able towers.

The marine can attack across lanes, but only limited to their weaponry, apart from jump marines who have the add-on jetpack, who can change lane. Devastators are good at long range, and can be upgraded to plasma weapons to take on the ork wagons.

I think the distillation of gameplay down to lanes, gives you the opportunity to think things through, as it slowly battles out. Theres variety in the upgrades you can equip and the pacing in which you get the different types of marines out. So I guess its more like a tactical war of attrition with different loadouts. The first 15 levels were a doddle. However, it does start to throw some heavy kit at you, and then the levels slow down, and require thought and combined arms strategy. If the orks get through, and damage your resource comms towers or your dispensers you lose them forever, and that makes the situation get harder and harder as things go pear shaped.

I expected this to be a total sellout and not something entertaining, but upon reflection, I'm enjoying it - the abstraction and limited aims focussing your tactics at a pace thats manageable. This isn't a "collect the stars" PvZ game at all. It has some interactivity, when you try and set off the equipped specials like throwing a grenade at something, or setting up a healing defense with a sargeant upgrade, but mostly its about planning the resource gathering and reacting to what the orks are throwing at you - and trying to plan, store and adapt what you have available and in what order. The dispensers are set up in the 5 lanes,  but the troops drop out as storeable cards that can be placed on any lane, so you have a great deal of flexibility.

Turned out worth it after all.

Obviously NOT the W40K we all want, but its a nice casual diversion.

^Screw you, Spelk. Screw you.

I know. I wanted to be massively disappointed with it too. It's £6.99 here, so I thought it was worth a punt. I mean. It HAS space marines in it!!! :)

Jarhead0331

Damn it. As much as I want to report that this game is an abortion of an idea, Spelk is totally right. It is actually very enjoyable...and highly addictive.

THis is about as good of a lane strategy game as a lane strategy game can possibly be. They've done a great job of adding units, tech, weapons and perks to make this really feel like a 40k game.

Anyway, it is solid. So, if you have any interest in casual gaming and 40k, this one is worth a try.

I'm going to move this to the computer forum since it is out for PC and that is what we are discussing in this thread now.

I think you're right.

I was pretty excited to initially hear about a turn-based one from Matrix awhile back but it turned out to be a modified PanzerCorps.  I suppose that may be as close as we'll get anytime soon.  And now a tablet-style "lane defense" game?! :-\

I know its in the casual space, but I'm getting a proper drubbing - dunno what level it is, but the Orks are out too fast, and their battle wagons are rolling two or three at a time, and by the time I have a devastator marine out with a plasma cannon to do any considerable damage to the wagons, I'm already overrun by orks and gretchen (or worse still exploding suicide squigs!). Get a couple of marines up to the bumper of an ork wagon, and make sure someone has killed the gunner passenger and you can often delay the roll of these monstrosities. But not for long.

All my current strategies to get me up to this point, now don't seem to be working. Get two comms relays out, generating points, three troop ships (usually two droppods and a rhino), set one droppod to special points gathering to open up the biker after 60s and the tower after 120s. Then knock out assault marines (with grenades) and devastators (with plasma cannons) and spread them around the lanes to provide cover for the incoming orks and wagons. My main aim to get a defensive tower in the center, and stick a devastator atop it, so he can shoot at all lanes and any of the ork structures at the back.

Need to fathom out how to get troops out quicker and more effective at nailing the ork trash already running at my bases. If any of them get through and damage one of my structures, then I'm usually completely screwed!

Theres a lot going on here, because its not just a case of getting the pods to dish out troops, you can have a stack of troop cards, but it also costs resources to put them on the battlefield! So there are timing cycles on the pods, resource gathering on a timing cycle, and resource cost to place troops. Plus the specials require you to turn your pods away from troop generation and towards special point generation. Then those special points have to be spent on the specials themselves to place them. PLUS the specials have a usage timer attached to them, so the biker needs 60 seconds before it can be placed - even if you have the special points to do it! The tower 120 seconds! etc. Quite a complicated juggling act for just 5 lanes of action. :)

Have a butchers at these lets plays..

Oh dear...

At about 10:00 in, it turns out its a reskinned clone of "Ninja cats vs Samurai Dogs".

I feel a little duped, but still, I've enjoyed what I've played so far.
