Incidentally, Steam was down for me this morning about 1 1/2 hours ago.  It appears to be up and running again now, however.

Apparently the new hotness involves just straight downloading Free-to-play games to people's accounts, whether they asked for them or not, since after all they're free so what harm could they do if they aren't very large.  >:(
Oh, it's not new.  I generally have 1-2 "free" games in my library at any given time.  I just quickly learned how to ignore them; I honestly don't even notice them anymore.

Is there a way to get them NOT TO DOWNLOAD!?

Not that doing so would help offset the huge server-lag inculcated when the servers send out free copies to everyone before a weekend (or whatever), but at least I'd have that much less updating to do while the lag is so slow.

Also, whatever happens to the game data when the free time runs out? Does it automatically delete off my drive?
ICEBREAKER THESIS CHRONOLOGY! -- Victor Suvorov's Stalin Grand Strategy theory, in lots and lots of chronological order...
Dawn of Armageddon -- narrative AAR for Dawn of War: Soulstorm: Ultimate Apocalypse
Survive Harder! -- Two season narrative AAR, an Amazon Blood Bowl career.
PanzOrc Corpz Generals -- Fantasy Wars narrative AAR, half a combined campaign.
Khazâd du-bekâr! -- narrative dwarf AAR for LotR BfME2 RotWK campaign.
RobO Q Campaign Generator -- archived classic CMBB/CMAK tool!

The free to play for a limited time just disappear after the time is up.  On the other hand, I have had "Spiral Knights" added to my library (I don't know how it got there).  It has been sitting there uninstalled for months.

Temp-Free games are not automatically downloaded.
You have to manually install them.
As for what happens to them when the time's up, no idea :P

Last week of school for many US kids this week.  Expect steam will be slower until Valve adds capacity.

Good point.  Steam will probably be even busier for awhile.

Seems like Steam is completely down again,
The website, store, login server, whole shabang.

They sure get hacked/DDoSed a lot.

That may explain why my Steam icon winked out by itself an hour or so ago. Wondered why it might do that.

Site seems to be back up but the login server is still down.

EDIT: And the rest seems to be recovering...

It's been fine for me all evening.  Probably depends which geographical servers you connect to.
