I've had plenty of hearing people go on and on about Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch. I'd not heard of it except for the poured out on Facebook by a few individuals, so I didn't think anything of it. I saw it was on Netflix a few weeks ago and last night finally got around to watching the first episode.

I have to say, it's brilliant. Cumberbatch is a terrific Sherlock...miles better than Robert Downey, Jr. was in the big screen presentation of Sherlock Holmes. Not that Downey is a bad actor - on the contrary. It's just I could not stand the SH movies. There's very few films, even absolute shite, that I will stop watching or walk out of - it's as if I need to see it all to be sure it's shite. Dick Tracey was one. The Downey Sherlock Holmes movies are two others. I tried several times to watch SH but I just can't do it, so I guess that really turned me off from the character for a while.

Glad I took a shot to watch Sherlock. Also surprised the episodes are pretty much feature-film length, which explains why there's only three episodes a season I guess.

The Downey movies were a disaster. You want to watch the best 19th century Sherlock, catch the Jeremy Brett series. Agree on the Cumberbatch/Freeman series as well. Extremely well done.

To each, his own. I really do like Robert Downey Jr., even when he did train wreck movies in the 80s (Back To School is still a favorite of mine). But the Sherlock Holmes movies...I think Law was far more annoying than Downey Jr. Oh well.

For me, Jeremy Brett IS Sherlock Holmes. I don't think anyone will be able to portray Sherlock Holmes as Doyle wrote him like Brett did. I also like Sherlock/Cumberbatch but I can watch the Brett series over and over. And I do, I own the series on DVD.

And like those 2009/2013 Trek Wars/Into Dumbness crap is not Star Trek, the Downey movies are not Sherlock Holmes!

For me, Jeremy Brett IS Sherlock Holmes. I don't think anyone will be able to portray Sherlock Holmes as Doyle wrote him like Brett did.

Brett was excellent, but Basil Rathbone is the quintessential Holmes.

No, you're correct in criticizing him for the SH movies, as I was. What he was thinking...ha.

Those movies were okay for what they were. The first one more so than the second.

Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the Cumberbatch show. I think Cumberbatch is an excellent actor, but I don't particularly enjoy the show.

I rather liked the first RDJ Holmes flick.  The second one gave away Moriarity too cheaply and killed off Holmes' female foil too quickly, and focused a little too much on the action scenes (like the chase away from the munitions factory) for me, which was not unlike the second Mummy movie with Fraser/Weisz.  Just because you can make the second one louder and faster doesn't mean its better (see also: The Matrix franchise, the Mad Max franchise, The Hobbit series, the Underworld franchise). 

Why is it that Pixar seems to be the only people able to make a competent sequel?  Maybe because they focus on telling a story, instead of stringing together stunt scenes and explosions?
