don't fight the game that's easiest and best advice I can give. When you first start out in your Free side winder, you're not supposed to be able to trade in smuggle goods and destroy the universe as Boba Fett the bounty Hunter. you're supposed to barely be making it by learning the game, hiding from the big boys and the big fishes in the sea and just doing a couple missions until you make some money to upgrade to a better ship.

Stay in your lane when you have a sidewinder at the beginning take some missions maybe grab some easy brownies here there until you can afford a viper or I'll holler to trade depending on whether you want to collect bounties or trade.

You can fight and a sidewinder it's just not the easiest thing but no matter how hard you try you're never going to be able to make money trading or smuggling in the thing so don't even bother

If you think 20k justifies the risk, be my guest. We are talking about new pilots here who are having trouble making money and getting started. I don't think the risk justifies the rewards for new pilots. Just my own personal opinion.

Whaaat?! Are you crazy? 20k per cargo piece is BIG money! Especially for new pilots! And it really isn't all that hard. Maybe I have been lucky, but you really make it seem like its much more of a risk than it actually is IMO.

The big thing with this game is TIME.
You need to be patient and don't expect to be a millionaire in just a few hours of play.
It takes observing your surroundings, getting to know what in your nearby systems and then take advantage of that. It's a slow game and that is a much bigger hump to take for busy people.

The key is what Great Ajax said.  Pay attention to the system affiliation and even the station affiliation.  Smaller stations hardly ever scan my cargo.

I hate reading my posts when I have used "Siri". I say "hauler" but it writes "holler"...not sure where "brownies" came from in my last post

At least she didn't put "Holla!"  :)  She's always changing my southern drawl to hiphop terms...

dunno if this is already mentioned somewhere in the thread, and I'm not scrolling 1700-odd posts to check, but here you go :)

http://www.space.com/28152-voyager-probes-elite-dangerous-universe.html

QuoteLaunched in 1977, the twin NASA Voyager probes have been coasting their way through the outermost reaches of the solar system. Voyager 1 has even breached the sun's outermost magnetic boundary, the heliopause, where the outward pressure of the solar wind balances with the interstellar medium, and is now humanity's first interstellar emissary.

Both Voyagers have a power supply, albeit dwindling, for the next few years. But once those plutonium power planets die, radio communications will cease and that's the last time we'll be in touch with our intrepid space explorers.

Or will it?

There's a fun thought experiment that one day in the future, when humanity has the technological prowess to build spacecraft capable of traveling speeds at an appreciable fraction of (or faster than) the speed of light, although the Voyager probes will have had a decades- or centuries-long head start, we could catch up to the probes and overtake them as we explore the stars. Our future selves may even calculate the probes' location and mount an expedition to visit the archaeological curiosities and marvel at the primitive, yet inspirational, technology their ancestors once had.

Now, in a rather genius move by UK-based online game developer Frontier Developments, we don't have to wait until the invention of the warp drive to see the Voyager probes once more.

Hidden in the recently released 'Elite: Dangerous', a crowd-funded reboot of the famous 1980s game 'Elite', both Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 exist as real entities that can be sought out and explored. The massively multiplayer 'Elite' universe is boundless, using open-ended galaxy modeled on our Milky Way. Realized by Redditor Goldenvale earlier this month, he calculated Voyager 2's trajectory and plotted where the spacecraft would likely be in the game's timeframe, in the year 3300 AD.

After being fact-checked by fellow Reddit gamers, it turns out that Goldenvale's math checked out and tallied with the  'Elite: Dangerous' universe.

In 3300 AD, the probe should be 664.9 billion kilometers (413.1 billion miles) from Earth. That may sound far, but on interstellar scales, that's only 0.07 light-years away. Considering the nearest neighboring star, Proxima Centauri, is over 4 light-years away, by the year 3300, Voyager 2 will have barely stepped off the interstellar porch.

Other 'Elite: Dangerous' players have found Voyager 2's twin Voyager 1.

In a wonderful additional touch, the developers have included the audio from the Voyagers' Golden Record — greetings recorded in 55 different languages.

As an avid space game enthusiast, I can't wait to explore the 'Elite: Dangerous' universe. Ever since playing the 'Elite' sequel 'Frontier: Elite II' in the 1990s, I've been fascinated by the open-world game play that allows you to explore a boundless universe. And, by the looks of the videos showing gamers' experiences, the ultra-realistic feel of being in space plus the cool addition of realistic locations of the Voyager probes (plus other nice touches that have yet to be revealed) should make for a mind-blowing experience.

^it is little details like that that make Elite such a spectacular experience.

I don't understand why you won't do a few of those simple courier missions. They are so easy and the money adds up.  :idiot2:

Dude. No.  how? lol...Just take the $2000 -$3000 credit missions. heck you can find some for thousand credits that are "just fly to the station and deliver this message" missions. You can make more than 60 credits selling your four cargo holds with something.  what are you doing while you fly around?

Next station you go to check the Bulletin board and take any mission where they are going to give you the cargo right there and have you deliver it to a nearby station if there is an omission like that go to the closest system and try there until you find them

Remember, stay in your lane. Don't  expect to do things you're not supposed to do in your free initial sidewinder. Don't try to be a trader or a bounty Hunter or think you're going to be a smuggler in that shit. The only thing you do in that ship is missions and maybe the occasional sidewinder bounty at an astroid belt until you can get enough for a viper or hauler

I do them when they are about. More often than not, there are none for me. More often than not they are available missions but just not for me - you know the split you get. I'm serious. I just docked and I check the bulletin board every single time I dock. Mostly, what I notice, are "illegal" ones - black boxes, attack traders that kind of thing. There are even often ones that don't pay. Very, very occasionally, there's one there for 3k cr to transport goods. I know the missions you mean - but they simply aren't there. Some of those unavailable missions are I think where I simply don't have the cargo capacity, or where the faction doesn't trust me.

I seriously check the bulletin boards every time I dock.

This particular time I looked it up and it says buy where supply is high and sell where demand is high. So I bought some computer components and visited several systems. I was actually limited to 4 systems I think because of my load of 4. So I went between them, docking at various stations and finding either a loss or a very, very marginal profit (12 credits for the 4 tons was one station!).

In between these, I decided to drop out several times and check out USS's - only to find either a big mutha ship, or some feds. I did jump out at a resource extraction point and scanned and decided to have a go at a wanted Sidey...I couldn't work out why I couldn't take him down - his shields were going down, but then he'd scarper and his shields would regenerate before he came back at me. In the end he scarpered out of there.

So I went looking for a system to buy my computer components. In the end, I sold them to the same place I bought them from for 60 credits.

After that I decided to upgrade my FSD to give me a bigger jump range and I upgraded something else...oh yeah - my power distributor. I then noticed why I probably wasn't doing as much damage to the Sidey as I thought I should be. When I had bought my multi cannons, I only bought one gimballed and one fixed!!! I thought they were both gimballed. So when I was fighting the Sidey and he wasn't dead in my sights, only one weapon was hitting. So I replaced the fixed one with a gimballed.

In all - I'm down to 7k cr now but with a better Sidey I think.

But yeah. Making money is f*cking difficult where I am  >:D

I just logged back in to prove my point...I was going to list the Available and Unavailable missions for you to see my point - and there's 7!! That's as many as I've seen in my last hour of gaming across ALL systems and stations I docked at!

Perhaps I should log out and log in more!

What's more, two of them are for 2 tons meaning I can accept two of them - another first!

First 1416cr made in 10 minutes
Second 3700cr made in 20 minutes

However - in both the locations I was dropping off, there were no available missions - none.

Has anyone else noticed when you plot a course across several systems, you can't Hyperjump with the destination? You can superspeed which will take ages - but in order to hyperjump you have to select the next system to jump to

*edit*
Although that didn't happen this time

I signed up for a 8k reward to kill two haulers.  But the missions changed.  Asked me to stop killing and go to another base.  They will give me 800 for my kindness.
I initially went on with the original mission.  I killed one hauler.  Investigated a second signal which turned out to be a Cobra.  I got damaged badly but managed to escape.

Noticed that my job changed so I'm not sure if I can still do the original mission to earn 8k.  Time is ticking so I decided to abort and head for the new base indicated.
I eared 800, spent 1k in repairs.  Net -200cr for the session. :(

Regarding scarcity of missions, it is happening to me too.  Is it related to multiplayer?  Limited missions per base with more people taking them?  While in single player, only you can take missions?

Also, I attacked a clean AI ship (I suppose those with no CMDR in the name is an AI).  Is that a bandit?

JudgeDredd

lol

Your experience is mimicking mine somewhat.

I have now decided to leave the baron wasteland that I frequented. I went 20ly away to sell my cartography for 4000cr. Whilst doing so I took on a couple of missions and earned some more cr...all in all, I think I've garnered about 10-15k in the last hour.

However - I wonder if I've f**ked up...my Hauler is now about 30ly away! Perhaps I should've sold it before I done a bunk  :crazy2:
