I see Elite as a space version of FSX + Air Hauler or may be Euro Truck Simulator.  Fly here, fly there, earn some money.  That's it.

I didn't really get it until you mentioned it but that's probably quite close to the truth for those that have chosen trader and whilst I didn't think I fell into the truck simulator category it appears I do and love it

For those who can dedicate the time to it there are epic story lines to get involved with but you need to work out a strategy on the forum and meet up with other guys

1.1 comes out in feb ahead of 1.2 in March both of which involve upgrades to the missions and include the wings element of the game

I think there is a lot more to it than air hauler. You can do trade missions to help out specific factions and civil wars and smuggle items in past Security to help out the rebels. there are different storylines you can get involved in as part of the plot and still be a trader. YOu also have to deal with pirating and interdiction

Still, what makes the 'Future of LHS3447' cult different than the 'Purple Nebula Mafia' ?
All the factions are just a percentage gauge. A technical element of the game. But the questions about who they are, why they are there, etc, remain unanswered.

The 'main story' is given to us in tiny feeds from a Galactic News Network, but I have never come across something in the 3D world to tie all that into the game and make me feel part of the whole thing.

As fun as I have been having with the game -and I do think the technical bits and game mechanics are well done- I feel I need to have the game pull me in more to keep on playing.

How do the mechanics compare to the (recent) X games?
ICEBREAKER THESIS CHRONOLOGY! -- Victor Suvorov's Stalin Grand Strategy theory, in lots and lots of chronological order...
Dawn of Armageddon -- narrative AAR for Dawn of War: Soulstorm: Ultimate Apocalypse
Survive Harder! -- Two season narrative AAR, an Amazon Blood Bowl career.
PanzOrc Corpz Generals -- Fantasy Wars narrative AAR, half a combined campaign.
Khazâd du-bekâr! -- narrative dwarf AAR for LotR BfME2 RotWK campaign.
RobO Q Campaign Generator -- archived classic CMBB/CMAK tool!

And as someone mentioned before, it's all generic.  At least in my flight simming, when I fly to a different airport or country, it looks different.
In Elite, all you see black space and the same set of space ports.

Afaik that's all due to change.... There's been a lot of disappointment with flying 1000 light years into empire space only to find all the stations are the same

I'm happy to concede at the moment that I think things like that are very much place holder until the core mechanics are refined and then we'll see window dressing

Is that really the case though? Is lack of variety something that the developer has acknowledged and confirmed would be further worked on? I'd be shocked if anything in the game is as you describe, "placeholder".

...the real thing unique with this games is
a few day ago i came out of a restaurant located a little away from the city and from the parking lot a very clear winter sky was visible with all the stars and constellations ...and i took a moment to enjoy it even so it was real cold (and EO nagging) ...and while i was looking at the clear night sky i thought: WOW if i would be located in Sol, i could just fly to every thing visible in the sky like i see it now ... Amazing!

At the moment i take a little brake and play other items on the HD that itch me more to get played.

i cant find the origin of the piece, but whenever someone says, 'i flew across the galaxy to find the ships and the stations still the same' there is always a mention of the devs acknowledging this and its in the works to add flavour

First thing: hello all, long time no chat.  I just recently noticed a PM in my wargamer.com mailbox that had been there since April 2014 -  ;D - from bayonetbrant, kindly informing me that a bunch of the old Wargamer crew had migrated over here.  Reading through this thread it was great to see a bunch of familiar old names from the PC gaming internet group with tastes and experiences most similar to my own!  I love you guys!
:smitten:

Anyway, this game.  It's in my "love and hate" box.  I love it because it is just so very good at what it does, and I hate it because what it does is so very limited.  My inclination is to ditch it until a bunch of the blanks get filled in that provide color - and surely they will, the game engine is so deluxe, all they need is the little details that anybody can provide.  If only Freespace 2 or Independence War had this kind of software engine - wow!

The only thing that has kept me from nuking it so far is just that it took a while to learn how to play, and to properly program my Saitek X52 Pro (which is fantastic for this game).  Maybe I'll take it out for a spin once a week just to keep my hand in and remember how to fly . . . but I doubt it.  I tend to be a serial monogamist when it comes to my games, and if E:D can't keep my full attention it probably won't keep any of it for long, e.g., I am starting to get back into Pirates of the Burning Sea now and I have the feeling it will keep my attention for a while.

But the game as of now is just too sterile.  Everything is cool, but nothing is remarkable.  Every station is very much like every other station.  I'm thinking in a year or two it will hopefully be fleshed out by expansion - and the Oculus Rift, which works very well with it so I hear, will be ready for prime time - and I'll come back.  In the meanwhile I've got POTBS teed up and Dragon Age: Inquisition to go back to, and. . . .

Hello again.

Welcome Glen55 - I lol'ed a bit at your year old pm!  :2funny:

I think mine was in my inbox for a month before I knew about it.

oh - and I kind of know what you mean. But I enjoy taking it for a spin because the sensation of being in space and flying is so superb. Some of the other players have got deeper into the mechanics of trade, piracy and bounty hunting - which seems to help. I have been rather slow in getting into anything specific and so - that's why I think I know what you mean.

But perhaps there's plenty of info around here I'm sure from some of the more hardcore players to help you get more from it...if indeed that's what you need.

You know, I'm actually still enjoying the game.  Just got my Cobra and am very much appreciating the massive increase in income from having 34 cargo slots available - made $750K on Saturday without even pushing it.

I just have the feeling this game is going to be so much better in a couple of years.  I have a tendency to hit the wall with games and once the wall is hit, it stays hit.  Example: a few months back I teed up WOW again after 5 or 6 years away and it only took me about 10 minutes to go "wow, WOW is still WOW, screw WOW, this crap is old."  I'd rather hit the wall sometimes AFTER the game gets a ton better, as I expect, than before.

I really do think it's going to happen.  The devs seem committed to the game and they are promising to add this stuff.  At the very least they should be able to leverage info, suggestions and designs from dedicated fans, like the guys at Paradox and CA keep going.

I lost my second ship in three days due to dodgy server issues.  I think I'm going to put this one down for a while and come back in a month or so.
