Elite: Dangerous. I broke down.

I tried to land on one and it told me I needed some piece of kit to go any closer. I thought about where I might buy such a piece of kit, how much it might cost me, checked out my wallet and then closed it down and went to play DCS

Hey, don't be too miffed...it could be worse. When I booted up the release build last night after updating from beta, my control configuration had reset and for some reason, the axis controls on both my flight stick and throttle were all inverted. It caused total confusion and chaos on launch from Haxel Port which resulted in my ultimate destruction. That little bit cost me $330,000 in insurance deductibles to repurchase my fully outfitted Vulture.  I called it a night after that little episode.

I'm not pissed about it. Very nonchalant actually. I was just pointing out I tried it and decided, at that particular time, I had no desire to go find the kit to perform the landing.

I'll revisit I'm sure.  8)

And your story reminds me of the time I was cocky with take off thinking I was some super pilot and went firing off through the exit - except I never got through the exit - and I didn't have enough insurance and lost the ship I had just upgraded to.

One day you seriously need to name a time and place and I'll meet you in open and drop a cargo load full of Platinum or Palladium for you.

This game keeps kicking you when you're down.

Had an issue with Elite which is a long story. Anyhow, need some help and I figure I will get an answer here faster than the frontier forum. I purchased through frontier. I was an alpha backer so Horizons is free. Haven't played in about a week or so...I fire it up and it tells me I have to upgrade my launcher. So I do. That's not unusual. Then I get the usual upgrade screen with three choices

INSTALL Elite Horizons 64 bit
INSTALL Elite Dangerous 64 bit
Or
UPGRADE my Elite Dangerous 32 bit

So from this I'm getting that the game I've been playing for a year is 32 bit and I can now upgrade to 64. I tried all three options and it just freezes which may be a server Issue. My bigger question is:

Do I have to upgrade to Elite Dangerous 64 bit and THEN get Horizons 64 bit? Or just the latter?

Just get Horizons 64 bit. You don't need anything else.

Jomni, your posts about this game have not exactly been very enthousiastic.
The core gameplay has not changed very much in Horizons in a way; only the places where this gameplay takes place, if that makes sense.
Its still a sandbox, it still has grindy elements and the missions do not drive a greater narrative. You still have to make your own story.

That said, you are a flightsim enthousiast and seem to like sims with a technical simulation as well as enjoying scenery. That should make the Discovery and just flying around on the planets something that, at the very least, tickles your appreciation for nice views and the realisation of what actually is on display here from a technical point of view.

Wether thats worth your money is your call. :)

You read me correctly.  But the sim part of Elite actually bores me.  I thought it would be like a space trucker experience like what I do in FSX and X-Plane flying people and cargo from one place to another and earning money (Virtual Airline).  But flying from one point to another in Elite is quite a simple endeavour.  No complex routing, no talking to ATC and respecting regulations. Controlling the ship is no way as complex as a Boeing 777 (which is pretty much automated already). All I see is the black space.  The ports all look the same. I guess I need to spend more time on the original game.  No need to plunge into Horizons.

I returned to Elite after a long while away.  (a long while away from the forum to, how y'all doin?)  I'm still impressed at how well Elite integrates the joystick with the user interface.  I can't recall any game I've ever played that is so seamless.

I've been away so long I haven't even tried the Close Quarters Combat addition.  I wasn't able to get in last night, it could never find a game.  Maybe it was my internet, who knows.

If they could add some player organization tools, and a way to harvest from the planets or something...I would love it.  We've got a lot of solid tools, it would just be nice to have a better reason to join up and have conflicts.

The latter point is negligible in the long run, if still slightly annoying. But have to say the price is keeping me away. I would've hoped $30 would be the price to simply expand your existing E:D...

Ah, okay. That may be the reason why. Unfortunately there's no way I would buy the whole game again just for the expansion. An odd choice for the developer, assuming it was their decision.

Maybe I misunderstand you, but you shouldn't have to buy the game again. It's just a (sort of quasi) expansion. Did you purchase Elite Dangerous from Steam or Frontier?

Must admit I'm somewhat pissed off with E:D.  I bought the base game for £40, and now, if I want Horizons I can pay an extra £30 for it, whereas new buyers get the whole package for £40.
