Currently looking at Outlast...looks really frightening:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/238320/
Anyone play this? Anyone have any other trouser-soiling recommendations? Note trouser-soiling is different than loin-moistening.
I bought it last year when it came out. It's decent. I really like the video camera interface and the parkouring/peaking system. The story's not the greatest though. It's relatively fast paced compared to Amnesia so the scares tend to consist more of things jumping out of the closet at you. After a bit of exploration in the beginning, you're constantly running and hiding as the game rarely lets you catch your breath or feel safe. It's different from the slow tension building "oh shit, what's around the corner" style you get in Amnesia but it's effective.
I never did finish it as I got sidetracked by something else. Maybe I'll go back to it.
Giant Bomb has a semi-regular series called Spookin' With Scoops. A rather panicky little man plays different horror themed games in a darkened room and posts videos of his experiences. You might want to have a look at his posts to see if anything catches your eye.
Maybe that new Alien Isolation game?
^Also looking at The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, which I think you mentioned you were playing...

Not yet. I just about pulled the trigger on it but I have a huge backlog of stuff that I should get to first. I've got 8 games installed on my desktop right now that I've not even tried yet.

Wow just 8 neglected games installed, that shows a lot of restraint. I'm defiantly in the mood for a seasonal October game, just not sure what......yet. I have a some choices in my backlog. I finished F.E.A.R. but still have the add-ons to get through so extraction point is a possibility, i really enjoyed F.E.A.R. I have a couple of older ones with spooky overtones, Afterfall insanity and condemned criminal origins. I also have deadspace to finish ,but i can't seem to play that game for long without it pissing me off, i'm so over the mechanic of being locked in a room with a bunch of creepy hell beings while being really low on ammo. Then there's the stalker games, i only own shadow of chernobyl. I usually lean toward FPP games for the spooky factor. if i go backlog it will probably be another bout with that spooky bitch alma in extraction point or give deadspace another shot, but i'll look around the sales and see what's what. I will be getting darkwood just not sure when and there's a limit to how spooky a top down game can be ,so basically no idea yet. I'm open to suggestions ;D
I loved FEAR, the original Dead Space and the original Stalker. I have a copy of Sanitarium installed...I must have bought it from GoG years ago...still have not tried it. IIRC people enjoyed it. Watching the trailers for Ethan Carter on Steam, and it at least looks beautiful.
Silence of the Sleep (http://www.silenceofthesleep.com/) has just been released. Looks like a 2D Silent Hill.
^Interesting looking game...artwork kinda reminds me of Betrayer.
This looks pretty scary, (http://store.steampowered.com/app/289050/)
^HA indeed. I have to go pick up the mother in law at Newark airport this afternoon. I should make a game about that.
As I noted in the other thread, I used to play Lords of Shadow in October for the atmosphere, but I'm kind of LoS'd out right now, having finished 2 recently.
This weekend I was going to play an old strategy game set in a darrrrrkkk settttinnngggg ^-^ (with bright cheerful colors mostly), but decided to go with Lotro instead, my very first MMO experience (unless one counts a few hours of Demons' Souls, and come to think of it that game and its pseduo-sequels should count very well for the season) which (much like DS) so far has limited the MMOing to seeing other players going through the first mission, too, around me.
Not a whole lot of Octoberish atmosphere yet, but I'm not disappointed!
As always, I shall here shill for a game of which you'd think I have some kind of financial or personal connection to but I don't, seriously. And by shill, as always I mean sing.
Ahem.
Boys and girls of ev-er-y age,
would you like-to-see something strange?
Wolves and shapeshifters you-will annoy,
if you play-the-game Sannng-froiIIIEEEEEEE!!! {murdered by humanoid wolfen non-werewolves}
Sang-Froid: damn yes this is a game for Halloween, even though it's set at Christmas!

bloody hells bells no way! That scared the crap out of me just the video!!
I don't like creepy!
This is about Halloween:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/275180/
That I can do - the other one gees me the heeby jeebies!
Not necessarily Halloween-themed, but the best zombie game on the market looks like Rebuild 3:Gangs of Deadville (http://store.steampowered.com/app/257170/).
It's more cartoon-gory than actually scary, and it's still in Beta, but it's plenty stable and playable, and for now only $15.
In August I got a free three day trial of The Secret World. While it had (sadly) boilerplate MMO conventions, it nevertheless was a creepy and fun game. I recommend it (my thoughts on it here (http://burkesjoystick.blogspot.com/2014/08/the-not-so-secret-secret-world.html)). Funcom usually puts the game on sale for half price or more for Halloween, so I intend to pick it up then.
Yeah I really liked what I saw of The Secret World, but sadly it was quite unstable on my PC for some reason.
I really enjoyed the investigation missions as they were really very challenging. Unfortunately, they worked on the assumption that your in-game character accessed the real-world internet. As more and more people played, the Google search engine stopped displaying the info you needed to solve the mystery and instead took you to walk-throughs or game forums where people were discussing the puzzles.
They also petered out after the 2nd location and the game became more of a combat focused grind.
Come on JD stop being such a kilted woman!
Secret World eh...*checking* Checking Sang Froid too...
Jason where is Lords of Shadow available? The only thing I see on Steam is the Castlevania 2 game.
EDIT: Sang Froid on sale right now for $1.49 @ Steam!!!
He's going for it!
Gus,
My brain seems to think you already have LoS1 from last year around this time... ???
The LoS series was already on sale a few weeks back, so may not show up again for a while (or until closer to Halloween anyway). But LoS1 is still on Steam, I just checked; the Ultimate edition with the two epilogue stories. (Much more important than the prequel story for LoS 2, by the way -- I wouldn't bother with that.)
Mirror of Fate is also on Steam, but personally I'd just watch a YouTube movie of that -- the story is mostly recapped at the beginning of LoS2 anyway (or after the prologue, which gets confusing since it takes place long before the LoS2 prologue.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxMUU3QH5II This makes a nice MoF movie with some gameplay transitions, about 53 minutes.

Geez. They're already on the
third one?! Do they re-release it every other update? I thought they were selling the second one earlier this year? ???
For zombie survival games, I think Project Zomboid is probably my first choice. Lots of inventory management in isometric stealth style.
I also recommend Neo Scavenger again, although it's a post-apoc turn based survival RPG. Not strictly zombies but mutants and such.

I also enjoyed the atmosphere. But I recall some parts of the second big area were becoming brutally difficult to finish. And there usually wasn't anyone else nearby to group with last time I tried to continue.
I should try it again. Maybe respec into something more survivable. Shotguns and Blood Magic woot! ;D
Anyone new to the game should be aware that there are a lot of quests that are more investigative in nature. So you have to search around and figure some of it out. Or just look up the missions online and get the cheats on what to do. That's what I eventually started doing since I tend to get sick of wandering around in a big area, wasting a bunch of play time trying to figure out some combination or where something is hidden. Still.. it was interesting at first.
I'm not sure any of the later zones can top the first one's mix of Lovecraft- and Stephen King-style f'd up New England coastal town stuff.
Outlast was very good. Scary with a spooky atmosphere. Hell I actually finished it, which says a lot.
If you want to see something scary I''ll show you my 401K. Some of the evil quests in Skyrim are a little scary--- a little.

lol - I just don't like being chased and that game looks seriously frightening!
Not a chance in hell I'd be able to play that. I remember stopping playing Doom it shit me up so much. Not the original one which was cartoony in appearance. But these new games are too real...shaking light, creaking doors, footsteps. I fired up Interstellar Marines the other day and had to switch it off because of the sounds of something running and it being pitch black outside of your torch view!
:'(
Here's a game that I always found frightening and immersive: The Suffering.
When I saw this thread I remembered the game...I wrote a review for it at Wargamer ten years ago: http://www.wargamer.com/article/1725/pc-game-review-the-suffering
(Images aren't present anymore, unfortunately...)
Even though it's ten years old and the graphics obviously dated, it's a lot of fun and creepy as hell. I really enjoyed the storyline, where the choices you make in game determine your guilt or innocence as to why you're in prison in the first place. Don't know if it's available anywhere...it's gotta be somewhere though.
I think I actually remember your review for The Suffering, BC.
I haven't pulled the trigger on anything yet, mainly because right now I am really getting into Age of Wonders III and won't be switching over to something else for a few weeks.
Even Sang Froid for 1.49 didn't get me to pull the trigger. Right now I am still most interested in Outlast or Betrayer, or Ethan Carter maybe, if I don't want to crap my drawers like JD.
whoa...I never said I soiled myself! :P
Right but you never said you didn't :)
Check out Ethan Carter JD, it may be perfect for both of us.

HERESY!!
...wait, that word doesn't mean that, sorry.
HAHA...I'm trying to pinch every gaming penny. And succeeding. But at the same time missing out on what have turned out to be some epic games like Shadow of Mordor and Alien: Isolation. Now I am reduced to waiting for a sale :/
I haven't even investigated what Shadow of Mordor is about - I guess I'm not much of a LotR fan. Yes, I saw the Peter Jackson movies, and yes, I saw the cheesy cartoon from the 70s (when there's a WHIP (wa-PSSHHH)...there's a way), but I only saw the PJ movies when they came out on DVD and a friend let me borrow them. I still haven't seen any of the Hobbit movies. It just doesn't interest me all that much.
Though Alien: Isolation...I've said I don't like stealth games but the 'woot' factor is strong with this one. Probably just the aforementioned nostalgia but when this goes on sale (and it most certainly will) I will be on it like a facehugger at GenCon.
Or...something.
We can hold hands and wait for the sales together.
Kum-bayyy-ahhhh, my Steammm, kum-bayyy-ahhhhh...
Alien Isolation looks way too scary for me.
I'd be hyperventilating everytime I heard that beep! :o
First second of a sale for Shadow of Mordor and it's all over, though.
JD when you get scared just hide your eyes behind your kilt.
I might just watch some Let's Play vids of Alien: Isolation and get the same amount of creepiness from it.
UNDEAD THREAD --- ARIIIISEEE!!
Bought Ghostbusters: The Video Game for $3 off Steam tonight; needed something light after a gut-wrenching stomach bug this afternoon, blergh, but also in the season.
It is very much Ghostbusters 3 except actually Ghostbusters 2 if 2 was actually 3. Or words to that effect. Ackroyd and Ramis wrote the plot, the whole gang is back together, it's... man, it's basically playing the new 4th Ghostbuster. That might be literally true, the player character may replace Winston Zeddemore even though Winston is around somewhere since Ernie Hudson in the main group of four. Haven't seen him yet.
Guys.
For three... dollars...
Less than the movie can be rented in High Def.
I'll play some 7 Days to Die and Left 4 Dead 2 at some point to get my Halloween zombie fix.
Train Simulator Halloween route. Not an add-on but a stand alone.

And Sean Bean narrating a high-definition trailer for the game you just bought.
But not Sean Bean dying on a train.

With Halloween almost upon us, I give unto thee all: an AAR introduction to Sang Froid (http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=11576.0).

^You ever play Sanitarium? I bought it years ago from GoG but have yet to fire it up.
Mmm... no. Haven't owned it either.
Anyone looking for a suitable game for Hallowe'en should get over to Groupees (https://groupees.com/damned3) to pick up Bundle of the Damned 3, which features
The Last Door: Collector's Edition. Why? Because it's a pixel-graphic horror point 'n' clicker that absolutely
drips with atmosphere and has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard.
It's free to play on the official website, so why buy the CE? Because you get to download it and play offline, and you get a copy of that amazing score. Oh, and you help fund future episodes. :)
