When they switched their forum system around a year or so ago, I never bothered with re-registering.
I have kind of kept my eye on it, but might have missed it. Does anyone know if there are any plans in the offing? It looks like there has been no updates in over a year and the forum is fairly quiet.

There are:
Steam and Iron
Steam and Iron Campaign
Russo Japanese War
posted by Fredrick W from the development team:
"I am currently working on the next development of the SAI series, and SAI itself will in all likelihood not be updated until after that is launched, as there will be several changes to the combat mechanics."
Great sim . Really comes alive with the campaigns addon.

If i remember correctly there was mention of "economic" choices. Buying/selecting/traing the ships/crew you want.
I always intended to do an AAR but Steel beasts takes up my time.

I actually forgot about this game. Been thinking to buy a while back.
this game is still kickin' - so easy to pick up and real fun!
last sai-campaign update was in april THIS year (2014):
[SAI V1.55 CAMPAIGN ENGINE CHANGES/FIXES]
* Fixed a bug with damaged ships in port at a different base being assigned to a new division in too many cases.
* Fixed a bug with ships occasionally remaining unavailable after previous operations in campaigns.
* Fixed a bug that could case the old flagship to be used for calculating divisions out of sight of the flagship after changing lead division or performing a battle turn away.

cheers!
chem!
I was all excited about the new patch you listed...just checked and it looks like its six months old. That was my point. The updates, releases, and information were coming fast and furious. Now I don't even see the dev much on the forum much. My question was bascially answered above.
:( bummer

Last I heard he was working on the upcoming Russo-Japanese War version.
Evidently there was some forum changeover over there and everyone lost their logins? *Sigh* ::) That's probably part of the reason it's quiet over there.
Not only did they lose their logins, but they lost a bunch of really good information and a lot of custom scenarios as well.
I've looked at Steam and Iron from time to time. I haven't been able to get Jutland to work ever since StormEagle started making us use Storm Powered... If I get in the dreadnought mood again I'll probably pick it up.

I have this... totally different. DRM exists in Steam and Iron and the campaign addon by way of a serial.. Excellent sim

I'm glad they switched to the "Storm Powered" thing as the DRM isn't as ridiculous anymore. No more activations tied to hardware changes & such. O0 I had to email them and get my SES login reset when they first changed over but it's been smooth sailing since (other than some spotty patching). Too bad they didn't go this route in the first place; they would've got less bad publicity by avoiding their original craptastical DRM altogether.

If it's not broke, don't fix it.
I'm often disappointed when I see a forum update their forum software. There is often buginess, lost content, and/or screwed up logins. What makes it more painful is that some of these updates weren't really needed in the first place.

That is the exact opposite experience from what I had. The old one had to 'dial in' every so often but I never had a problem with it. Storm Powered is such a frustration I haven't played the game since. :\
I had some huge issues with the dial-home DRM. Had fewer issues with Stormpowered, but it was/is buggy as hell for a while.
It would seem that SES is mostly kaput now. It might be a year since anyone official has posted anything on their own forum. Posters, the few still there, are pretty frustrated.
I've been playing the Russo-Japanese War campaign lately and it's been a lot of fun. Having to plan your operation by spending operations points to activate ships - and you are generally pretty constrained as to how many ships you can activate - to achieve the week's objectives, and then commanding those ships in tactical actions is a great mix. It's graphically simple, and fleet command is straightforward, but it isn't easy at all. In my first few attempts the Russians were basically whipping my tail despite being pretty disadvantaged.
I really hope that they don't add an economic layer. That would ruin the game for me. I want to be an admiral, not the Secretary of the Navy. Not everything has to be turned into Civ.
Agreed on the economic aspects. I was really hoping the focus would be on newer theaters and timeframes.

A patch to clean up some of the oddities with late 19th century conflicts like the Spanish American War would be great, even. I'd love to do that one as a campaign.
I was looking forward to the WWI campaign system (and later the RJW one) but never got around to picking it up. Just had so much of a backlog at the time, it got shoved to the back burner. Especially since I've not been in a naval warfare mood in awhile.
And now... having to re-register a login on their forums? I had to wait awhile before my last one got approved via email. Had to mail them a second time as a reminder IIRC. ^-^ Hopefully a different experience the next time.
Do they have the bugs ironed out of the S&I campaign(s) by now?

I got my new account setup with them and it only took a couple of hours or so to get activated. The first version of this game was something I thought I could get into, but for some reason never held my attention for long. I'll have to try it again when I can devote some good time to it.

I've yet to try a WWI campaign but the Russo-Japanese campaign seems to be working well.
The Campaign expansion brings this game to life..it takes it from being an Ok\enjoyable little sim to being a time consuming superb wargame experience. Honestly if you don't have the Campaign buy it..you wont be disappointed.
I'll echo that. The campaign was great with a host of lesser known ship types included. But I got to say the Action Point approach can be frustrating as you never have enough to put a decent fleet together unless you sit in port and skip a month or two in which cast the AI can outscore you by running their own missions. Also the missions are a little repetitive. But it's nothing that the real-life admirals didn't have to cope with.
I think the campaign puts some very good real world constraints on fleet management of the era. You can't run around everywhere and be everywhere with every ship. In 1914, coal-fired ships had relatively short cycles between overhauls. So you have to husband your big ships and keep enough small ships to recon and pin-prick at your enemy.
The AI is very good at balancing that. You can beat the AI by not sticking to strategies that were somewhat forced on real commanders. But you are still constrained by the tech of the time. The game does an amazing job of that.
I'd love to see a WW2 Pacific campaign. I've never played anything other than the console based PTO games that did the Pacific Theatre in an approachable way.

Was hoping for some of the knife fights around Guadalcanal.
Re playing the events of Bloody Friday when Admiral Callaghan and his cruisers got it on against Admiral Abe and his battlewagons would be a blast.
Still holding out hope.
On another note I can't understand why these battles aren't taught in every public school in America...

I actually got to beta test that one for a bit. It is fun but doesn't quite scratch the itch that those old P.T.O. games used to.

Thanks for the link. :)
Holy Hell! That guy's nuts, sailing his Battlecruiser squadron right up alongside the enemy CL and it's Destroyers at point blank range. No wonder he received so many torpedo hits. :-\
Also a tactic of note: don't be constantly turning with the big boys when you're in a gun fight. There is an accuracy penalty if you're not going straight & steady and your guns fire. You can't avoid having to turn, of course, but longer straight stretches means more shots are gonna be more accurate. ;)
Luckily many of these situational modifiers can be found in a list while you're playing, so you can learn how to maximize your fire efficiency by looking at them regularly.
Yeah, looks like he also had his BC's engaging with the wind behind him making his smoke foul their shooting. At least some of the time. I can relate to the torpedo in your ass threat. A campaign fight recently had my 2 German CL's and 2 DD's engage a single Russian DD. We were beating the piss out of him until... he slowed... and... put a fish into one my CL's at about 1000 yards. She nearly sank before I could get her slowed down and out of harm's way too. Good thing the game doesn't demote you for your screw-ups.
It sounds like it's a really decent game. I waited because they were doing the campaign stuff, and I thought I'd wait for release, then I forgot all about it. Is the current state of SAI really good now?

Yes

Thanks Asid. I'll add it to my Christmas wishlist. :)

Wow!
:D
Woah, that is exactly the sort of thing I've been looking for!
Could be a real winner. SAI's Data base of vessels is incredible and the Ship Editor already allows you to make almost anything you can think of. Now we'll have a reason to make them. I'm thinking most people here will likely have a provocative foreign policy. Kind of like this :knuppel2: with 15in. guns.
The (draft) manual for Rule the Waves has been released, and it seems we might just be "a couple of months" from release!

Sounds like an ideal game to me: you are the moral equivalent of Jackie Fisher and/or Tirpitz or 10 confused Frenchmen:

I really like the idea of the arms limitation treaties and therefor the need to upgrade already built ships. I've always wanted to see that in a game.
