I'm getting really sick of our leadership doing nothing but talking. These scumbags need to be destroyed, period.

Nuke from orbit!

...which translate into:
every known larger encampment get a 0,5 to 1kt yield cruisemissile all to set off at the same time.
And please no political correctness whining about so called "civilians" and collateral damage.  today i saw a crowd getherd after Fridays prayer to cheerfully watch and participate (stoning) in executions in a build up city area.

I could see our leadership from the 1940s/50s doing something like that.

Hell, Kennedy's generals were trying really, really hard to convince him to do a first strike on Cuba with nukes.

But these days, they won't drop a pebble on them.

Personally I think our bomber strike packages need to start with targeting the CNN, MSNBC, and other media whore empires first before going after these other terrorists.  ;D

That has about as much a chance of happening as them aggressively pursuing these animals.

It wouldn't even need to be nukes. We can deliver a thousand tons of ordinance of various flavors from anti-personnel to Durandals and bunker lances at accuracies within a few feet now (so we can limit the large blast radii rather than having to carpet bomb them in streaks). Nitrates salt the earth, it's good growing land a few years from now instead of poisoned for practically ever.

Film it in HD and post that on the internet.  :coolsmiley:

the biggest problem is "what do you do after you kill them?"

the Iraqis / Syrians still can't govern the place, and the Turks won't let the Kurds do it.

so what fills the vacuum?
Title: Re: Jordanian Pilot Burned Alive
Post by: BanzaiCat on February 03, 2015, 01:51:24 PM
Yeah, pretty much. Like I said, killing them is one thing, killing their ideas is something totally different. We're talking about two choices here:

One, Westernize them.
Two, mass genocide and subsequent Lebenstraum-like re-colonization.

While two is not a logical or even practical application, obviously, Option One is probably even less so.

We've gone a decade plus in Iraq and Afghanistan not letting our troops fall into their hands (other than two early on  in Iraq who were quickly killed and Bowe Bergdahl). It's actually more likely to happen with the small numbers we have on the ground now than with large numbers who can saturate an area and make it hard for these people to surprise units or move prisoners.

You realize the people in these areas are the biggest victims of ISIS and of their government's inability to govern? It's easy to be glib about their death when you've never met them. If we actually did just wiped away whole cities because of the few thousand psychopaths who took them over, what does that make us? It's nice and clean and video-game-like from 20k feet, but that doesn't make killing on that scale any less heinous than what ISIS is doing on an individual scale.

I think the differences between the circumstances that LeMay faced and what is going on with ISIS are too great to warrant the same level of destruction. ISIS is an occupying power in Syria and Iraq. We didn't flatten Paris or Manila, did we?

I'm not sure how many people in that region are innocent. Of course, they are not all beheading non-believers, but my understanding is that a full 30% of the global Muslim population holds extremist views. That is more than 300,000,000 people who believe in the wholesale slaughter and destruction of western civilization.  Moreover, I reckon there is a large minority, or even perhaps a small (or maybe not so small) majority who hold conservative Islamic beliefs, which means that they may not support the wanton murder of non-believers, but they still hold backward beliefs that lead to underage women being stoned to death for rejecting the advances of a much older male, or even worse, for getting raped by one, or that lead to homosexuals being thrown off of buildings in a public square.

The religion is medieval and until they get with a program of modernity, I do not think they have much to offer the world.

Now Jordan plans to execute the failed suicide bomber (aka "extremist" as USAToday calls her) (http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2015/02/03/islamic-state-jordanian-pilot/22798055/) who was going to be traded for the pilot.  Not really sure that'll help things any since ISIS clearly doesn't give a f*ck about human life.

So, carpet-bombing/nuking cities of Muslims is the solution? What about the Christian/Yazidi/Druze/Kurdish/Zoroastrian populations in those areas?

Look, I have a lot of respect for all of you here. I just don't believe that you really want to incinerate a bunch of families, most of whom don't really care about Israel or the US one way or another. I get it, it's fun to talk about making glass parking lots, but I don't think you would really want it to happen.

Personally, I believe assimilation is the solution...not annihilation. However, until the majority of Muslims take an open stand against their extremist leaders and the prevalence of barbarism in their societies, I will not shed tears if they are lost due to efforts by the Western world to defend itself.

Yeah, the trick is killing them without killing too many of the people you are trying to save from them.

Now we're getting close to defining an objective. Few of us here want to see unrestricted collateral damage. That said, saving people from an oppressive regime may (or may not) be our objective. Once we define what we want to accomplish then we can decide how to go about doing it. Destroying ISIL may not be the same as saving the locals from all oppression.

I think there are lessons to be learned from our 15 years of experience in the sandboxes. In all cases we seemed to be able to accomplish short term destruction of formal resistance, but then seemed to lose our way in figuring out whether/what/how to reassemble any pieces to our own liking.

Perhaps its now time for a grand bargain.

1.  The US and Europe cannot be the lead.  This needs to come from the Middle East countries.  US and Europe can provide some troops, air and support.

2.  Is it perhaps time to redraw some boarders.  Dissolve Syria and Iraq.

3.  Kurdistan from parts of Iraq and Syria, with a port to the Med.

4.  Saudi Arabia gest most of Iraq and Syria that's left over.  Perhaps Kuwait gets a piece of Iraq.

5.  Jordan get a bit of Syria to put a buffer between Israel and SA.

I know, it will never happen, but....

My opinion, while a sizable portion of both countries want to see Israel go away, I don't think either government has any desire to go down that road again.  By not having a shared boarder with Israel, I think it may give the Saudi's domestic room.

Saudi Arabia doesn't share a border with Israel. The closest they come is opposite shores of the Gulf of Aquaba, and even then there is still a bit of Jordan in between.

Having said all that, I forced myself to watch the video of the pilot's burning (sorry to derail the thread from the original topic). It's absolutely gruesome, and I won't forget it the next time I'm over there fighting these vermin. Hopefully this conflict keeps sucking them in to where we can get at them without putting our own citizens at risk.

I haven't watched the video.  I haven't watched any of them since the videotaped beheadings began in early part of this century.

They truly are medieval barbarians.  More and more, I am inclined to want my government, and its allies, to leave that part of the world alone.  Withdraw.  Promote an alternative to fossil fuels.  Leave them alone to torture and murder each other until they socially evolve, in the same manner that Europe (more or less) did.

But I don't believe that Big Oil will allow that to happen.  Especially now that the new Saudi King is jacking up the price of oil.

The problem with that theory is they will not leave us alone. They will continue to attack, kill and destroy until Western Civilization has been burned to the ground. They will not rest knowing "non-believers" exist in the world. To attempt to ignore them is a drastic error with catastrophic consequences. just look at the streets of London and Paris, and the mobs of unassimilated Muslim extremists.

Like Airborne Rifles, I forced myself to watch the video and I too will never forget it. I have avoided watching the beheading videos because it is something I have seen before and I already know how truly horrible it is...I don't need to see it again.  However, if watching this latest video of that poor Jordanian pilot once does not result in the solidification of global will to destroy these animals, our leaders should continue to watch the video over and over and over again, until they are so disgusted and angered that there is no other option but to act decisively.

Just for the other record: that's why I agreed with hitting the military camps, or even just one camp.

But don't hit it soft. Culturally they work on emotion and poetry (like all people do, but it's a stronger part of their thoughts and communication than for many of us in the West), so whatever few places we hit DO IT AT EPIC MYTHIC LEVELS.

It might seem like a waste to kill a couple thousand soldiers and probably a few civilians who don't really want to be there (and more who do and are willingly supporting the soldiers) with two million pounds of high explosive and incineration devices, but it sends a message people will understand in their bones.

I'm a very religious man, and I don't want to hurt the people actually being oppressed; and I'd prefer for whoever has authority in the region to live in peace with us and with one another. But if it has to be done, make it a message religious people will intuitively understand. We have the resources to do that, and the tech to make sure the actual damage spread is minimized.

He is a fan of the science fiction series Star Trek. In 1996, while still a prince, he appeared briefly in the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Investigations" in a non-speaking role, as he is not a member of the Screen Actors Guild.[31] A Star Trek theme park is planned to open in 2017 [32] as part of the $1.5-billion The Red Sea Astrarium (TRSA) project in Aqaba, with the King being the majority local investor.[33]

His interest in the film industry has also influenced his decision to create the Red Sea Institute of Cinematic Arts in the Red Sea coastal town of Aqaba, in partnership with the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts on 20 September 2006.[34] When the producers of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen chose to film in Jordan, he called on 38 military helicopters to help transport equipment into Petra.

King Abdullah II has an interest in the internet and information technology, and commented on two Jordanian blogs that discussed his interview with the Petra News Agency: the Black Iris and the newspaper daily Ad-Dustor.[35]

He is also a fan of stand-up comedian Russell Peters, granting him an audience in 2009 and inviting him for dinner.[36]

On 13 December 2013 in the 2013 Middle East cold snap in Amman he helped to push a car which was stuck in deep snow in a street.[37]

Abdullah was born in Amman to King Hussein during his marriage to British-born Princess Muna al-Hussein (born Antoinette Avril Gardiner). He was the king's eldest son[1] and as such he was heir apparent to the throne of Jordan under the 1952 constitution. However, due to unstable times in the 1960s, King Hussein decided to appoint his brother, Prince Hassan bin Talal, as his heir.[1][3]

Abdullah began his schooling at the Islamic Educational College in Amman. He then attended St Edmund's School, Hindhead, in England, before continuing his education in the United States at Eaglebrook School and Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts. In 1980 he joined the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, was commissioned into the British Army as a Second Lieutenant, and served for a year as a troop commander in the 13th/18th Royal Hussars.[1] In 1982, Abdullah was admitted to Pembroke College, Oxford, where he completed a one-year Special Studies course in Middle Eastern Affairs. In 1987, he attended the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.[4] In 1993, he assumed command of Jordan's Special Forces and became a Major General in May 1998.

Man, Jordan is in position to rack up some serious political benefits (and maybe do some good for other people in the process).

If only they'd stomp Hezbollah et al. ;)

But seriously, I'm conflicted about this. Jordan heroing up vs ISIL: seems good but something about it feels off to me.  :-\

Jordan has always been the moderate one among the Arab countries in that area, generally stable but weak as well. They've never been excited about the wars against Israel (except maybe the first one in 1948), and they stayed out of the Yom Kippur War completely.

I worked with a battalion of their paratroopers who were on the UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti when I was there in 2010. They seemed like pretty good soldiers, at least better than the Brazilians we worked with. They murdered us in a friendly organized soccer match we played before our battalion pulled out.

Jordanian state-run media did not specify where the strikes took place, but U.S. officials told Fox News the strikes by 20 Jordanian F-16s took place at Thursday at 1 p.m. local time near the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa, Syria, and said "lots of ammunition" was expended. They said U.S. Air Force flew air refuellers and radar jammers in support.

The returning fighter jets roared over Al-Kaseasbeh's hometown in southern Jordan as the king paid a condolence visit to the pilot's family, and the monarch, himself a former general and special forces commander, pointed at the planes as he sat next to the pilot's father.

One question I have not seen answered is where the frakk IS-Hole keeps all its stolen oil money. Supposedly they make obscene amounts of cash from the oil wells they control. That cash has to go somewhere. Do they keep it under their filthy mattresses? If it is placed into the international banking system for safe keeping then there has to be a middleman (bank, country, multinational company) to launder the ill-gotten gains. It should be possible to figure out who that is and attack that entity financially and make the whole Outlaw Caliphate thing a bit less lucrative because, at the end of the day, behind all the raving nutjobs there have to be some regular old greedy warlord crimebosses who have simply monetized the so-called jihad.

Brant's takeaway:  We need to send more fuel and bullets to Jordan

They've taken entire towns. Towns have their own banks and are filled with paper money, gold, and other valuables. And I suspect there are a few Swiss bankers who will help them connect the dots in making electronic transfers. :/

And here we go again. I guess even Obama figured out we can't ignore them.

QuotePresident Obama is expected to formally ask Congress to authorize the use of military force against the Islamic State terror group in the coming days, even as lawmakers said crafting and passing such a measure would be a challenge.

The U.S. has been carrying out airstrikes against the terrorists, most commonly known as ISIS, in Iraq and Syria since August and September, respectively. In doing so, Obama has been relying on congressional authorizations that President George W. Bush used to justify military action after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Critics have called the White House's use of post-9/11 congressional authorizations a legal stretch, though Obama has previously argued that a new authorization isn't legally necessary.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Thursday that the administration is dedicated to getting a new authorization with bipartisian support. He declined to comment on specific provisions, including how long the authorization will last, what geographical areas it will cover and whether it will allow for the possibility of ground troops. Earnest said those details were still being worked out.

There are probably at least two reasons.

First, he wants bi-partisan support to both cover his position as withdrawing from the region and in case things go bad.

Second, this may be a longer term action than the toppling of Khadaffi.

I'm with Wing, if they are selling 1000s, 10,000s, 100,000s of barrels of oil per month it cannot be hard to track the physical movement of that volume of goods.

How will you "Westernize"a Madrassa? These are the religious schools the kids go to for religious indoctrination, and by their nature are very conservative in their approach. You are looking at generational change here, not a quick fix.

I read a story (news report or somesuch) that described the inside of one of them. It had paintings of a bunch of virgins all splashing around in fountains and rivers.
