Is there any reason to expect that this Steam sale won't offer the exact same discounts as the one that ended just a couple of weeks ago?

I have to admit, I don't really get why these big Steam sales are bunched so closely together, when there's nothing that really differentiates them anymore.

Not really...no. Last year the sales were identical iirc.

But I survived the last one so I'll be buying *something* this one. Probably Doom and one or two others that escape my rather feeble memory.

I'm might actually get a game this year.  If Grim Dawn goes on sale for a deep discount, I'll most likely pull the trigger on that one.  I'm feeling an itch to play a good ARPG.

Grim Dawn is good and cracks open into a wider world after the first act IIRC. Until then it felt a little claustrophobic to me.

I've seen it regularly going for about 50% off over the past couple months, in various places.  I think one retailer was actually giving it away as a buy-something-get-free deal a short time ago.  So I'd expect it to have a good discount during the sale.

I've enjoyed playing Grim Dawn but I have one problem with it.  The framerate always drops down below more preferred 40fps minimum whenever I move my character.  Doesn't matter what gfx settings I use, or even how powerful a computer/gfx card I'm using it on.  It's just enough to notice the framerates get just a bit choppy, and gives me a bit of a headache after a stretch of hacking & slashing & running.  Something at issue with the optimization, and Crate has never addressed it despite the complaints.

The framerate loss doesn't bother everyone, so  you may be fine with it.  Still playable for me anyhow.

Hmmm well after getting repairs to my car...and repairs...and repairs...which has devastated my bank acct.  :'( I'll be lucky if I can just get a few DLC for CK2 or EU IV.

But who knows? I'm willing to see what is on sale. I remember buying Fallen Enchantress Legendary Heroes for 2 bucks.  But I think I can squeeze something in...

Its the day before the big event....wonder if there will be really any great sales like the past....seems like recent ones had some decent discounts, but nothing earth shattering that I couldn't pick up throughout the year from third party sites.

Although to be honest, not sure there is anything I am dying to buy from Steam at the moment.....made it through the other recent sales without a purchase, will there be a repeat?

I guess we'll know tomorrow:)

I have $47.14 in my steam account. I also have 8 games on my wishlist, none of which are on sale right now. They range in price from $10 up to $60.

I would LOVE to have Planet Coaster, Automation, and Darkest Dungeon all drop in price. Currently, these three, alone, are a combined $99.97.

I Already own both but might get them via STEAM to avoid the multiple install/patching and have an online failsafe...not sure.

Meh.

I'm generally unimpressed again this year.  Just like last year.

Have seen deeper sale prices on a few of my wishlisted Steam titles in the past few months.  Wasn't in a big hurry before & this doesn't push me off the fence any faster either.

Debated picking up the a couple DLCs but I haven't even finished the base game yet.  And the two other indie games I was eyeing didn't get much of a change.  Mixed with already having plenty to catch up on, they can wait.   :-\

Pretty much everything on my wishlist is on sale...but it's a sobering thing to realize that I probably wouldn't install and play any of the games on my list, or that I'm seeing on sale on Steam at all, even if they just gave them to me. If it's something I really want to play, I already have it...  :(

I am about 30 hours in to the game, and well worth the price IMHO.  I am not a fan of the timed missions either, but you learn how to deal with them pretty quickly.  At about 20 hours in however, I the missions start to get very hard; but satisfying when you can escape with your cajones intact.  And you will lose troopers...

The price cuts on many of the sales haven't dipped as low as they would awhile back.

The older games which had been getting 75+ percent off in the past may still be getting it, but the ones from the past two or three years are lucky to hit half-off these days.  That wasn't the case for awhile, up until a year before last.

Starting to see better sale prices at other retailers than Steam.  Even outside of seasonal sale runs.  They clammed up.

^ I agree.

The Steam sales are a shadow of what they used to be - or other companies have picked up the mantel - either way, Steam isn't the "big one" it once was.

Also - a while back, the Winter Sale used to offer deeper cuts than the Thanksgiving Sale. Now they are, from what I see, identical. On top of that, I miss the daily specials.

So Steam for sales now is kind of "whatevs" :buck2:

Vae Victis...

Well, if you love a good conspiracy chant during the holiday season, consider that Steam has almost clinched inserting itself as the only distribution platform for PC games.

All capitalistic enterprise seeks monopoly, and when it gets there, the freebees are over; and both devs and consumers will get squeezed in this case...more money for Steam, less for the devs, and fewer good sales for us.  The dark future vision even has us poor slobs paying Steam for "maintaining" our accounts.

But that thought is just too dark to contemplate for long... ;)

Im still not thrilled, most cuts are not as good as summer sale, the only thing I will get now is Supreme Ruler Ultimate, since it is 70% off.
Maybe I will get Steel Armor (35%), I just do not like the fact that it was 40% off last year's winter sale.

lol - I wouldn't have painted the picture that dark.

monopoly or not (and they currently are not - not really) - they still have decent sales (just not as sweet as they used to be - or I have all the games I want so the ones that are on sale are the ones I couldn't really be bothered with and so the deal isn't as appealing.

Steam is still a superb platform for gaming. Cheap games, lots of indie stuff (if you're into that - at least they get an airing), a very diverse collection of games in one place, easy to pay, easy to play, supports mods, supports auto updating

Whether they turn out to be Cyberdyne or not, we may find out in my time left on this planet.

Two main games on my radar.....ARAMA Apex ($17) and Graviteam Mius Front ($22)........I did pick up Dishonored 2 from a different place for $25 and so far enjoying the stealth elements.

As others have mentioned, largely you can get stuff cheaper from other sales/sites than steam during the entire year so these sales are less useful anymore, but you still can pick up the occasional item you cant get elsewhere.

Star Wars: Empire at War Gold Pack and Sword of the Stars I - Complete Collection cost almost nothing.
I Already own both but might get them via STEAM to avoid the multiple install/patching and have an online failsafe...not sure.

XCOM 2 looks tempting, I loved XCOM 1 but I heard there are timed missions. Not sure if that's fun (?).
There are mods to adjust the timings to your liking. One of my most played games in 2016.

In a moment of weakness, I broke down and picked up a couple indies late last night.  A few hours after I said that I didn't plan to.    L:-)

Always on the lookout for some turn-based strategy for "recliner play" on the laptop.  So I buckle like a belt after some of those have been on my wishlist for awhile.  So weak.

Book Of Demons &
Halcyon 6: Starbase Commander

Then I just picked up the DCS MiG-21.   Time to lock the wallet down.  :knuppel2:

It's not just heavy traffic this time.
Considering how long it's been continuously down now, and the errors that one would get.
And not to mention the entire Steam infrastructure is down as well (not just the store)...
It seems like foul play is involved. Someone (or some people) are really working hard to make people miserable.

Hmmm dithering if to get myself a Christmas present of a game (instead of mundane clothes in the sales):

XCom2 (from Steam)

Witcher 3 (from GOG)

H.M.S. Warspite for World of Warships

Last one clearly makes least sense in terms of value, but I kind of owe them for the many, many hours of free fun I have had - and I have been a Warspite fanboy since I was about 15 and read Roskill's book on her.

Actually quite fun to dither :)

I would have added CMANO, but a great concern it will sit glaring at me on Steam with a "last played" date far in the past.

OK...as usual, I dropped some pretty nice coin on a variety of games, and still have $38 to spend. Looking hard at Automation, or Parkitect.

The new game I am playing the most? Warhammer Quest..an EXCELLENT turn-based dungeon crawler, whose MSRP, with all the DLC, was near $50. Steam price? $2.99. Get this game! For the price, GREAT value.

If it helps push people off the fence, onto the Gardenias below, the base game and the 3 Free DLC are only $9.99.  The last "DLC" is an optional $7 to "gift" the developers for all the free DLC, and I think they then "gift" you back with some high quality JPEGs.  So, $10 for the entirety of an albeit odd, but well-received strategy game.

Knowing that the crowd response will be to buy all 3, which of those gets left out?  I'm leaning towards HoI 4, for now at least, but am not sure...

I bought Thea during a sale. It's an interesting and well crafted game. It's tough, no fooling but the setting with Slavic mythology is intriguing. There's a lot to like. Plus the DLCs for free is nice too.

As for me, since last week was Car repairs..and what I had left to do some shopping for my nephews and my mom (my Mom covered my Dad's gift) I'm holding out until payday this week.

But as to what? Ehh..not too sure right now. Might grab some DLC for Crusader Kings or EU IV, maybe? Not entirely sure.

Time to make the list.  Here's what I've purchased so far:

Omerta-City of Gangsters.  I had the demo for awhile and finally played it.  It was actually kind of fun.  I haven't played the full game yet.

Football Manager 17 (Full Price :uglystupid2:).  It's pretty good.  A little improved from FM16.  I've finished one season with a random, low level German club.  It's not holding my interest like it used to.

Motorsport Manager.  I really like this game.  It's got just about everything I could want in a racing game because I suck at actually driving in them.  Now I don't have to.  I hope they add the ability to customize your race team.

Car Mechanic Simulator 15.  I bought this for my son and I play it more than he does.  I'm not really a car guy so this game is a bit educational as well as entertaining.  It has that "Just 1 more turn" feel to it.  The surprise game of the bunch.

Total War: Warhammer.  I don't need to tell you guys anything about this one.

Blood Bowl 2, CKII, and Wargame: ALB.  I picked up DLC for all of those.  CKII is just about complete.

EU4 Rights of Man and the associated Content DLC
Cities Skyline DLC; Natural Disasters, European Soccer Stadiums, Relaxation Station, High Tech Buildings Content Pack, Art Deco (None of these where not on sale)
Hegemony 3

Couple of other things on my wishlist where sitting in my cart but decided to pass. Attila TW and Tabletop Simulator being the most notable. Just can't pull the trigger on Attila after my experience with Rome 2, and every other TW game since Rome 1 to be honest. Formula doesn't work for me but I always find myself tempted back. The battles and visuals sure do make pretty screenshots.

Warhammer 40K, Dawn of War, Dark Crusade. Picked up this for a couple of dollars, and it is an excellent RTS. I have played DoW before, but it had been a very long time.

This, Total Annihilation, AoE II HD, all three RTS's picked up this Christmas I am more of a fan of turn-based, but these will be just fine if I am feeling a little froggy.

Broke down with minutes to go and bought Panzer Corps Gold and rFactor 2 (racing sim).
Was debating hard about picking up WiTE and Assetto Corsa (another racing sim) as well but managed to talk myself down.
Picked up Battle Academy 2 at the start of the sale.

Not sure why Panzer Corps got my attention this time round, I've fiddled with the demo before and never jumped. In my prime WiTE would have been a sure thing, but watching videos of gameplay gave me pause. I may be past my "monster game" phase after all, though I have a weird desire to buy a copy of War In Europe every now and then.

Tuna these are the mods I am running in my current Mercia campaign:

-Remove Negative Imperium Traits

-Attila: Flags of Nations

-Mercia by Agrez (reskin)

-More Meaningful Seasons

-Natural Water Mod

-Realistic Archery Mod

-Sebidee's Charlemagne Expanded Unit Roster

-Trade Routes x2.5

How do you play it? Alone or with others?
Title: Re: STEAM SALE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Post by: Dammit Carl! on January 04, 2017, 09:36:50 AM
I generally run solo at this point as the group that I'm with all have Level 30 characters - I'm just at Level 12 or 13.  The Level 30 types have their own diddly bits to bother with past that point; things like "gear score," and so on that don't seem so interesting to me to be honest.  There is a PvP area called the Dark Zone that seems okay, but from the videos that I've seen, its all about min/maxing your stats, gear, weapons and skills and then flailing around like mad once you make contact with others.***

You do have the choice of going solo or with a group and the group can be a set bunch of friends or teaming up with random pubbies on the missions that are going down outside the Dark Zone. I think you have the same option if you go in the Dark Zone but I'm not sure if there are missions in that area or not.

What is cool are the optional areas / game modes that you have access to: Survival and Underground. Survival puts you and 23 others down in a blizzard wounded and dying with no gear in NY. You have to scramble to find things to survive, fight off AI bad guys and extract before dying of your infection. Oh, and other characters will probably be trying to kill you too.  Check out the videos of people playing this as it seems very intense.  Not sure if you can buddy up with friends before doing this mode.***

Underground is basically a dungeon run. You can set the overall parameters of the mission, hit the "go," button and you alone or you and your group are whisked off to kill the minotaur complete your mission.***

There is one more DLC mode called Last Stand that is going to be out soon and I've no idea what its about.  Sounds cool, though.

*** = This is my take on the game, so as always, grain of salt and all of that.  Its not a realistic game per se, but it is visually exciting with a not-so-bad storyline to compel you through the missions. Supposedly the idea of the game was generated from a exercise the government did in the early 00's, so it does have a kind of "yeah, I could see that," feel to me.

Jeez.  Sorry for rambling on like that.

I've said it before; either here or elsewhere - the sheer ambiance of the game is what really gets me going. You feel cold when you see snow dusting up realistically on your character when he's stalking some thug (I've, no joke, stopped and put a jacket on the character when this was going on - outside of the Survival mode, clothes make no difference), the lighting of the streetlights muffled in a diffuse halo during a hard, windy snowfall, and the soundtrack!  Best way I can describe it, is that its like something from a John Carpenter movie and to me, that is a good thing.  I'm not escaping from New York, I'm bringing the justice back to it!

Its basically a MMO that uses technology and hand-wavery to replace magic and the like (i.e. instead of, say "magic missiles," you can get "seeker mines," or somesuch) and to see/hear the videos of people extolling this type of character "build," or that "build," honestly makes my eyes bleed as I just don't care.  I'm a Basic D&D guy and they are 3rd Edition types. I'm in it for the story and the fun. Let them talk all that fiddly talk.

If Ubisoft does it again, check the game out on a "free to play," sort of weekend which is what got me roped into it. Can't hurt anything.

^ I concur - and I particularly agree with the "cold" bit - I do "feel" the cold while running around

Great game  :smitten:

oh - and about The Dark Zone - from my limited experience in there, the baddies are tougher and the loot higher in value. But you do (did) get a lot of rogue (PVP) players...watch where you shoot...accidentally shoot someone and you're rogue meaning everyone will be looking to "defend" themselves against you...so you're dead basically  :DD

I haven't played The Division in a while and right at the very beginning I delved into The Dark Zone a few times - but as with most multi-player games, I didn't like that.

Outside of The Dark Zone I was having a tough time doing a mission...kept dying...so the next time I went back, there was a "point" outside the mission area that let me hook up with other random players (I *think* they are of the same/similar level - I can't recall).

So basically you can nip in and out of multiplayer. It's a cool idea. I don't know of any games that did that before and if there were either I never played them or I forget  :)
