Title: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020/2024
Post by: Redwolf on December 15, 2023, 05:59:35 AM
Heatblur's F-14 Tomcat is out for MSFS2020. You even get a 30% discount if you own the DCS version already (although this only seems to work if you purchased at Heatblur's own store).

In related new MSFS2024 is coming next year and will carry purchases over: https://www.flightsimulator.com/microsoft-flight-simulator-2024-faq/

Yeah, I don't see the point of flying combat aircraft in MSFS2020 when you can't launch weapons and blow stuff up.  It is nice to fly the whole world though, but I keep these two worlds separate.  DCS to blow things up, MSFS2020 to practice civi flight.

The MSFS2024 will be nice, not exactly thrilled about buying the sim again, but if the content is good, might be worth it.  I mean, the team upgrading the engine has to get paid somehow.  As long as I don't have to rebuy all the addons for 2024, I'm good.

Does it have Jester constantly bitching at you and prematurely ejecting?

There's a sale of the highest rated aircraft going on. I couldn't resist picking up the F-35 and 737-800.

Overall this sim is coming together nicely. Even more so since I gave it even more disk space and downloaded all the terrain updates :)

Where do I buy Indiafoxtecho's Tornado IDS?

If you buy it outside the game's own marketplace it has weapons. But I can only find foreign links to purchase it.

These are stores I've used before without issues :

PS : If you buy aircraft outside the in-game marketplace some planes have visible weapons loaded on pylons, but you can't launch any.

You can also download the weapon packs for free. You just can't get them through the marketplace.

I addition to Orbx, I also buy from Contrail.

Yeah, those sales links are what I found.

I guess it is the extra package and marketplaceit is then.

I know I can't bomb Microsoft HQ in MSFS. I just want the simulated weight on the wings.

I'm surprised the tacpack hasn't made it's way over to msfs2020 so you guys could at least blow stuff up with your military aircraft.

On a side note, you guys looked at war thunder much lately ?  I usually snobbishly looked down on it as arcade BS, but the sim battles portion is like dcs / iL2 lite and it has every aircraft under the sun, including Tornados that you could actually bomb stuff with.  Only kicker is you have to spend hours grinding and unlocking everything, which is the fun / annoying part depending on your perspective.

Tornado flies well. I am also very happy that they included a Marineflieger livery (West German Navy fliers).

Pretty small instruments and windshield, though, after some time in the F-35C.

Currently downloading the companion package. Any idea how I would go about driving that tractor?

Good news. Cosmetic weapons will be allowed in MSFS2024.

"Indiafoxtecho

NOTAM: COSMETIC WEAPONS ALLOWED ON MSFS MARKETPLACE(?)
******
As may of you have noticed, in the latest Flight Simulator Developer stream, Microsoft has announced that COSMETIC weapons will be allowed on Marketplace items - contrary to the previous rules.
This is good news for us, if anything because maintaining separate Marketplace and Non-marketplace versions was a lot of work.
While the rumor that the policy was under review was already circulating, so far the rule has been strictly enforced.
We have contacted Microsoft to clarify the new rules, when they will be applied and if they are also valid for scenery items.
If the rule is confirmed, it is our intent to update our packages as soon as possible - BUT we may also need to include some fixes to improve MSFS2024 compatibility, so this may not happen immediately.
The packages potentially affected are:
T-45C (PC and XBox)
M-346 (PC and XBox)
F-35 (PC ONLY due to memory constraints)
F-14 (PC and XBox)
Tornado (PC and XBox)
If the rules will apply also to scenery objects we will also update the carrier packages. This is also good news for Cavour and Queen Elizabeth, as it reduces the maintainance workload.
We'll keep you posted.

The career modes are going to be a great addition and I think that was the biggest gripe of the xboxers, nothing to do in 2020 but sight see and challenges.  Putting some game into the sim will be interesting and draw more players.  The scenery upgrades are suppose to be really good.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 In-Sim Marketplace Delayed

https://fselite.net/content/microsoft-flight-simulator-2024-in-sim-marketplace-delayed/

"In the latest 1st Part Aircraft Developer stream, it has been confirmed that the in-sim Marketplace for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will be delayed and therefore not available at launch. Jorg Neumann, Head of Flight Simulator, said that this delay is to ensure that developers have a bit more time to work on their existing add-on collection before opening it up to newcomers who try flight simulation through Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.

I dunno. I don't see why the whole marketplace should wait for the slow developers, including those developers who did their homework.

And the way it is worded you get your msfs2020 purchases immediately. So you can just start up 2020, buy what you want and it will pop up in 2024, no?

In 2020 I am mostly flying third-party modules, so I am not eager to pay a lot more for more MS planes.

I think I'm going to stick with the standard edition for now. I get this for free with my gamepass subscription. Nothing is really jumping out at me in the Deluxe version and there are really only three aircraft in the  premium that I would feel like flying. The aircraft added with the aviator edition don't really make we want to jump either.

Is there any other major draw to the aviator edition? Or any of the other upgrade packages for that matter?
Title: Re: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020/2024
Post by: Skoop on November 19, 2024, 02:08:03 AM
^ Not really, you are probably fine with standard.  If you really like it, you can always upgrade later and maybe even at a steam sale discount.  Only reason I can see to get some of the extended stock planes are that small mod teams release freeware upgrades that make them almost study level.  Fly by wire did that with the in game A320.  There was also one for the 787 that came in the premium edition.  Also, it may provide you with more choices in the career mode.

There is pre-load. It's been active for like over a month. I tend to avoid pre-loads because it still always seems to take a long time to verify once unlocked.

I haven't really looked this up much. I have 2020 and hardly played it. Not because it's bad but because - you know - open world do what you like. I like to have something to do. I hear this has a career mode...anyone shed any light?

I will of course go looking - but would like your insights.

I did have Air Hauler for 2020 but it crashed often iirc.

I played the technical weekend a month ago and career mode is AWESOME. You start off simply with a Cessna doing simple flights for folks but can branch into all sorts of directions like firefighting, search and rescue, medivac and more. Eventually you can even start your own airline. It looks to take a lot from Euro Truck Sim 2's DNA, which is a good thing. I am so excited about it.

Woah. The sales procedure on MS' own service is substantially less smooth than on Steam. What a mess.

And it only preinstalled some 13 MB of junk, not the game. I guess I get to regret not using Steam.

But it is only 50 GB, so it should be bearable without preload.

No problems installing or loading here...but yes, too many users are trying to log in at the same time, so I am in a que waiting. Annoying, but not entirely unexpected. I can wait until these issues get sorted...I have plenty of other things to do, but I can see how this would frustrate others who were very eager for this to drop.

One of the most annoying things about msfs2020 was that they run the pre-game 2D dialogs on the full 3D graphics engine. So you use lots of power if you leave those screens sitting there.

This is giving me flashbacks to the launch of Hell Divers 2. It took awhile for them to get enough servers online to handle the demand. Once they did though...man, the game kicked ass.

This is a highly anticipated launch, and I think it is hard for any game company to anticipate the actual server support that they will require. This definitely sucks, but I'd expect the community to be more mature and not review bomb the game over the issue. This is typical, and while I'm not excusing it, the problem will be worked out. I wish people would calm down.

What I like "best" about this is that MS still runs all these loading and login screens with the GPU at high power, just as in msfs2020. This was a top wishlist item of mine to fix.

The amount of electricity that has been burned today just because of this must be impressive.

lol - aye - and unashamedly edited for effect

On a huge plus - I started MSFS2024 this morning. Logged in and all worked. Even better, I set the graphics to Ultra and created a small flight in a  Cessna from Glasgow Airport to Ayr - loaded it and it was very, very smooth and looked very, very stunning.

Aircraft on the ground taxiing, vehicles driving around.

Very impressed.

There were some stutters when transitioning view. Like looking around or getting out the aircraft etc - but once they had loaded it seemed fine.

Given the setting was Ultra I was very impressed with the FPS overall.

Not saying problems won't show when I'm at a busy airport or whatever - but - initially impressed.

No VR. I got rid of my VR a couple of years ago - just too "annoying" to get settled in a chair with everything setup.

As for the performance - it was just a quick take off and fly for 5 minutes. Nothing too deep. But I was surprised at how well my system held up on Ultra - I was definitely thinking I was going to have a game that looked like Minecraft

Glad to see this venerable franchise thriving...

I first played MSFS on a 16bit Tandy 3000 DOS based PC computer with 640K of RAM and a 10mb hard-drive; that was nearly 40 years ago.

I will get this latest version eventually...

So I did load Glasgow to Prestwick and flew it and it was stunning. No graphical glitches that I noticed.

However....

I loaded another flight (or tried to) from somewhere near Skye to Inverness and the computer just sat there for more than half an hour - showing a screen of the area with clouds - the loading screen - with my GPU being hammered 80% and CPU at 20% and memory at 5GB

I don't know what was going on - but it didn't load that flight and to keep my GPU from destroying itself, I back out - which it let me do tbf - no hard crash or end task required - just ESC and back to the menu.

I tried again later with the same flight and no joy - same thing - sat on a loading screen (no indicators to see how that loading is going) with GPU being hammered.

Just lettin' ya know.

We have worked hard with our partners, including Asobo and others, to bring you an amazing sim experience. The excitement for the sim today has been overwhelming, but we encountered an issue with one of our services handling the new systems in the game like career mode and various missions. The server responsible for handling data requests got overloaded, causing delays and errors.

As a result, players are experiencing long loading times and missing content like aircraft. We have solved the issues and are now bringing players in at a steady pace. Downloaded and installed this morning.  No issues at all.  And best of all the game runs like a dream and is visually very impressive.  Still tweaking the settings and controls but so far I'm very happy with it.

I can also fly today. And my Saab Gripen from 2020 appeared in my aircraft selection for some reason.

Issues about 2020 that I would like to see fixed are unchanged.

The new extra screens to change livery and loadout are a pain. Why did they do extra subscreen diving?

I tried to manually install my F-14, but the directory structure changed and I see no information about where Community add-ons are supposed to go. Well, I have the Gripen.

I don't know what's going on with it.

I just tried to load the flight I tried to load twice this afternoon and it worked this evening.

I've since tried to load 3 other different flights and I am just stuck on the "close up" of the map holding screen with my GPU screaming at me.

So currently, it's very, very hit and miss whether a flight will load...for me at least.

What's most annoying about it is there's no load bar so I just don't know if it's stuck or just taking its time. If it was taking it's time, I wouldn't mind waiting...but you have no idea

When it does load, it's smooth as silk

And now I'm just getting kicked to a screen saying "Connection to network lost"...I guess because alot of US connections are kicking in now?  As its 9pm here in the UK.

So maybe some server capacity issues still

I know are there people are having issues with 2024, but lets take a step back and realize how we got here.  In 1982 I burned too many hours flying the 1st flight simulator, remember pressing a key and having to wait for the screen to refresh to see the aircraft pitch up some.

As a real life GA pilot I will attest that overall 2024 is the most true to life looking simulator available.  Having spent about 7 hours in it now I can also attest it is a big step up from 2020.  While the buildings are hit and miss and not much improved over 2020, the ground textures, trees, and overall lighting are a giant leap.  The sim looks amazing.  In VR dropping in over the trees and buzzing a field while dodging the haybales then pulling up out of the field literally gave me the feeling of flying.  Leaned out the window and looked over the side of the plane into a mining pit I often fly over IRL, got a dizzy drop of the stomach feeling 10 out of 10 will do again !!!!

Give them time to work out the bugs, it is an amazing advancement in simulation.  If your looking for accurate flight models then xplane is still where it is at but I'm seeing some improvement with some planes in msfs 2024. I have landed in a field a couple times just to get out and look around and while not every place is impressive there have been a few no that if I took a screenshot people would swear it was a IRL picture.  I'll gladly deal with the growing pains to go from the 1982 below to where we are today.  I do agree with others though that the QA on this version seems to have dropped the ball as there are plenty of growing pains to deal with that probably should not have been there on day 1.

In summary congrats to Microsoft an Asobo, they are pushing the boundaries of flight simulation far beyond what I imagined I would ever see in my lifetime.  Despite the issues and even despite the poor QA, I'm giving this game a 10/10.  Now approaching the point where MSFS 2024 could potentially, for some people, replace IRL flying.

I have it installed and I've messed around with it some. I guess I'm lucky in not having any problems with it.
That said, I'm still playing MSFS2020 until some of the third party stuff is sorted out.
Saying that 2020 addons will automatically be compatible with 2024 was a stretch.  I can see being made to pay for "upgrades".  That would make me not very happy.

I have only seen occasional connection issues now - though they are mostly resolved. Ive noticed speed issues (presumably internet connection) and therefore not all things rendered properly - but again, not often.

Mostly I have nothing but good things to report really. I'm doing the Pilot Licence thing. It's basic but compelling - at least for me...wanting A's in everything.

I don't have any 3rd party stuff for porting so can't comment.

Generally, very few issues now after the debacle of release (when is release of anything not a debacle).

I'm still confused with the GPU high percentage when simply sitting on what is really a load screen...literally nothing going on. Also I do hope they provide a loading icon of some sort to help when connection issues are tough - just so you know it is actually doing something.

Got my first few bugs today...graphics and controller issues

Finished my training and started a mission - but I was sitting outside the aircraft. And it happesn every time. I've rebooted the game and still it happens. It may be the aircraft (it's not the Cessna I'm flying in missions - and I can't change it that I can see).

Also - setting up controls seems very, very convoluted. I've not tried until recently...but assigning my button to my flaps for continuous worked - then didn't. I had to rebind again and they worked. Now in this new aircraft they don't

There's something about the process that makes it very awkward. I don't know why my settings that I set for the Cessna are not being used for this new aircraft because when I set them for the Cessna, I ticked to make them default AND assigned to every aircraft.

I ended up just quiting because I couldn't take off in this damned new plane. It's squirrely as hell and I can't keep it in a straight line and no matter what I do, I can't sort the controls out. It's also got this new thing (was not doing it on the Cessna) where when I press the brakes to slow it down, it puts the brakes on. I've been through the settings and I can't find anywhere where that's a thing. And - it wasn't doing this in the Cessna. It's like a tap will switch the brake on...and I'm having to use the brakes to steer because the damn rudder pedals are way too sensitive and not behaving as I have set them.

So - yeah - very first step into the "professional" world and it's got me buggered. Everything seemed to be ok when I was in the Cessna. I don't know why it decided to throw me into a different plane  :nono2:

Re: my earlier complaint that helicopters feel too controller, they are like 3D elevators.

I found that although flight assistance options are turn off by default, this only applies to fixed wing aircraft. The default has 3 axis of assistance on for helicopters  :TimeOut:

Now I turn them off. It doesn't make a huge difference. There's more left-right oscillations. But the pedals are still barely needed and there seems to be no flight model / air change near the ground.

So this is the bug I can't get rid of. I passed my test on the Cessna - then got chucked into this piece of crap - sitting outside.

Then this happened - done one of my "missions" to get rep (or whatever it is I'm trying to build...credits or something?). Anyway...

Marked down for Taxi Speeding (because now - for some reason - my brakes don't work on my pedals - even though they DID work and even though they are bound (and I've rebound them multiple times).
Marked down for Flaps Extended Max Speed....I don't know how because a) like my pedals, my flaps button on my throttle don't work (despite being bound and rebound multiple times and b) this message popped up when I was on the ground - no flaps down, no movement and no engine on
Marked down for Prohibited Airspace - where? I flew through every single "rectangle" during the mission

So - I'm more than confused. And it's unplayable without my brakes and flaps (I tried the key binds for these controls either and they didn't work either - in the end, I was applying and releasing the parking brake to slow down)

I'm checking out now until it's went through some changes - it's just frustrating now. I don't know why it's got so screwed - everything was working fine for me controls wise.

I just don't get the change! This game, out the box for me, felt great. All controls worked and they were configurable. I had no graphical glitches and, apart from connection issues, no other problems.

Now they've done something that's screwed my controllers so they don't work in some cases. Bizarrely, the key binds don't work either. I couldn't get flaps to work with a key bind. What I did get working was brakes using the keys but when I touched them, they just went on and locked on rather than what they were doing which was being applied during press and being released  when releasing the button.

I'll give it one last try this morning because - you know - every now and then, being a sucker just feels right.

Microsoft says 64 GB is the 'ideal spec' for Flight Simulator 2024 but I've tested it with 96 GB, and it makes a big difference.

With 16 or 32 GB of memory, Flight Simulator 2024 badly jerks and lags as it tries to load in the world when starting a flight. Even just moving about in the menus isn't especially smooth with those amounts of RAM. But with 64 and 96 GB, it's almost stutter-free. Almost. Microsoft still needs to work on sorting that out, as it spoils an otherwise decent experience. It also really must address the fact it takes a ridiculous amount of time to load the darn game.

Developer video. Mix of lame excuses and some good info.

Marketplace will arrive next year. I'm not sure how that is useful since for most planes you can just fire up 2020, buy the plane and wait for it to show up in 24.

They say that the same level of pre-play download as 2020 would take 1.4 TB in 2024. Worth it as far as I am concerned, but they aren't gonna offer it. They admit bugs in caching.

Patch is out. You have to manually re-enable all the planes that already came over from 2020. Did that, didn't get much flying in yet.

The list of patches is long, but I am not affected by most since I don't do the career sub-game yet and mostly fly third-party planes:

Well - I'm no longer sitting outside that crappy wee aircraft I was handed when I passed my certification and my business.

Rudders wok again - but brakes do not - even though the configuration tool recognises the pedals as I assign them.  :hair:

So I fired up MSFS 2020 the other day and couldn't taxi straight.  Checked what the rudder was doing and could see that it was randomly flicking about.  It dawned on me that this behaviour was the result of my malfunctioning toe-brakes (spiky pots that I'm unable to cure) on my CH pedals, and that MSFS had mapped the wrong axis of my pedals to the rudder.  Might be worth a check.

So I think I discovered something that's been driving me nuts but, now I know about it, I can avoid.

I think the default aircraft Flight Design CTSL Asobo is broken. First, that's the aircraft where when I do a view from outside, the pilot is sitting outside the aircraft.

The next thing - much more annoying, is the brakes. For such a long time, I couldn't work out why the brakes weren't working for me after I did my Private Pilot Licence. They worked fine, then I started my career with my PPL and the brakes didn't work. It seems they just will not work on this aircraft (which was the aircraft I was given in my career).

I managed to change the default aircraft (easy enough) from the Asobo to the Cessna and boom...brakes worked again. I then tried the Asobo again and again, they did not work. Not only that...I was watching the pedals as I pressed them. The left one seemed to work gradually as designed although as it was fully depressed, it didn't go all the way to the top. I looked at the right pedal in the aircraft as I was pressing it and nothing happened - right up until I got it being fully depressed and then it knocked the lever fully forward (this was the "parking brake" I was watching). The pedals themselves were moving in a very odd fashion.

Jumped back into the Cessna, and everything worked again. I'll try another aircraft tonight to see if the brakes work...it could be that I set the brakes up in the Cessna and they only work in the Cessna - although I can't find anywhere that suggests the controls, as setup, won't work for other aircraft - especially as I selected the option to use them for all aircraft (some copy feature bottom left of the controls setup screen).

ANyway - I'm glad I'm back in the Cessna and able to carry on - those brakes were driving me nuts. (I'm sure they worked when I first got into that aircraft though)

I'm still using 2020.  24 still has a number of bugs to work out. Nothing too major....just little things that tick me off.  Plus I'm still waiting for some of the third party content to be updated.  Getting there but still a little way to go yet.

I watched a video on boxer arty recently that seemed to indicate it was came with a "gps denied" capability. Does anybody know what this might be and if it is different to ins?

Great ideas and real pretty to look at but the fundamental elements don't work.  And it is SO
messed up that you start to wonder if they'll ever get it sorted out.

I mean it seems to work for some people. Just flying from A to B seems to go reasonably well. But things like career mode and other subgames are totally broken.

It just isn't good enough to replace 2020 for me, and now all the changed keystrokes create a problem for me when I switch back and forth.

I find these things frustrating.

Right now FS2020 is entirely disabled for me. The Steam version wants me to log in to Microsoft. But the dialog box for the password is broken, you can't focus on it. Clicking on it with the mouse deselects it again after a fraction of a second. Who's QAing these things before release?

On the bright side, my Vulcan bombah can now be enabled in 2024. It even almost works (out of trim, can't get the nose down at all).
