Big surprise, it's Normandy again. Americans vs. Germans only. No Brits, Canucks, Poles, or Free French yet. Hopefully they'll get some screen time soon.

Typhoons? Very British?
Looks like fun. I'll be playing this at least a few times.
^Thunderbolts.
So they prefer to work on add-ons without fixing the stock scenarios.
The new patch that came out yesterday supposedly fixed the scenarios.
I am so tempted to get this but I've heard the single player is meh. However, those screenshots look awfully enticing.
Is this available now? I logged onto Steam and didn't see anything extra available..

Nope, will be released sometime in December.
Those screenshots are great...I sort of regret not picking this up on the Steam sale now.

Oh boy. Anyway, I think Iron Front is fairly amusing. I just fool with the single-player via the editor. In that mode
Normandy should be fun,
Editor is the way to go. Stock single player campaign can get boring and was broken. Latest patch claims to fix this but I don't know for sure.
Some more screens. The armour looks great but I really hope they do some more work on the uniform textures for the infantry. They look a little too wrinkled to me.

Those look awesome and I agree the wrinkles are a bit excessive.
Those aren't wrinkles. They're the new Allied tiger stripes cammo scheme with real fur. :)
It looks like Iron Front: Liberation 1944 is on sale on STEAM for $9.99 right now.
Campaign is horrible. I'm now in a mission that seems impossible (4th German mission).
Multiplayer is a ghost town. This will probably be a sandbox for me... tinkering with the editor.
Just purchased...I had to for $10.

Anybody else playing around with the dlc? I'm having a lot of fun with some of the single player Normandy missions. Night combat is awesome...muzzle flashes and flares make it confusing and extremely intense.
I downloaded and installed it after I got home from work last night. I only had time to fiddle for half and hour or so. I played the D-Day landing scenario. Seemed like fairly typical ArmA stuff. AI milling about and dying like flies, calls of "Enemy!.....machinegunner....2 o'clock!......200.......metres........OH NO!!!.....6...is down....." and then I'd get to the burnt out Sherman and die horribly.
I'm looking forward to playing some co-op with the SimHQ guys next week. Some of the screens they've put up already look fantastic.

I hope this isn't too off-topic, but I just saw over at SimHQ that a beta mod called "Hell in the Pacific" was just released.

Ok this game is damn frustrating as usual. Reloaded countless of times already. I'm playing the D-Day scenario and I'm now on top of the hill ready to take out the bunker. I'm alone and each time a kill a German a few more come out of the bunker. How do you solve this puzzle.
Call in one of those P=47s that featured so prominently in the pre-release screenies
The P-47 does perform strafing runs in the D-day mission but not enough to wipe them out.
Update: Just had a blast playing this user created mission called Into the Dark (http://forum.iron-front.com/showthread.php?1451-SP-SP-mission-INTO-THE-DARK-(V1-05-released)).
You take the role of a lone Russian sniper tasked to sabotage a supply depot and assassinate a Colonel behind enemy lines. You need to traverse for kilometers with random patrols. The depot is at a random location as well. Took several hours and reloads for me to finish the game but it's all worth it. Quite satisfying when you succeed in each objective. The mission is quite cinematic as well.

I got the Normandy DLC. Very weird stuff. The landscape seems more like what I dimly recall of the MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies than
anything else. I just played in the editor. Some nice wrecked houses anyway.
is the editor the same as the ARMA editor?
Quote from: undercovergeek on December 30, 2012, 09:48:07 AM
is the editor the same as the ARMA editor?
Same editor. I've been doing the same relatively simple stuff in the editor for years:
1) look around the map
2) drive or fly something
3) set up a series of defenses and try to get through them
4) set up a defense and try to defend it against attacks from all sides
5) confused meeting engagement
6) try specific weapons (planes were popular for a while) -- so eventually (these edited scenarios evolved
in the editor), my POV guy would see some kind of air attack and then try to get to some objective with
his squad through a lot of stuff)
I play with the guys from SimHQ on a semi-regular basis. they've just upgraded their server to include the new DLC. Here's a video of a co-op mission of an American assault on German defensive position. Things go to rat-shit right off the bat when both the platoon and senior squad leaders get cut down almost immediately. Junior squad leader steps up and scrambles to re-establish order and continue the assault.

That was Awesome SDR, thanks for sharing!... I'm gonna have to make one of those sessions (maybe when the wife is scrapbooking - otherwise, gaming is usually at night for me)..
Now I'm definitely gonna have to grab that DLC!
i have to say, so far, after fiddling in the editor and playing small vignettes its the best WW2 action game ive played - sometimes amongst the dearth and multitude of WW2 games its easy to understand the Normandy/WW2 game fatigue, but every now and again one pops up to put a smile on ones face - i can literally play Saving Private Ryan or (so far) the town raid of Kellys Heroes - i just need a bank
Is there a web site that hosts user made missions, especially for the Normandy dlc? Would like to see how much is available before taking the plunge.

heh its funny you should mention that - i dont think theres many, i sometimes get the impression that the purists are still with Arma II and Arrowhead and because this wasnt an official BI product they dont experiment as much, akin to the Afghanistan game for CMBN - it hardly gets a mention
all this is what i can deduce, im sure theres a forum somewhere with a shit ton of scenarios but i havent seen it yet!
Just purchased the Normandy DLC 8)

You definitely should. Everyone's welcome. The hosts just ask that you use Teamspeak if you're going to play. You don't have to speak, but they'd like you to be able to hear what's going on.
As for missions, you can grab a number of them from the official game forum.
http://forum.iron-front.com/forum.php (http://forum.iron-front.com/forum.php)
I don't think there are that many out there as the state of the game on release was poor and that drove a lot of people away. The fact that Iron Front, unlike ArmA, is not moddable also serves to limit the number of mission makers.
As I was searching around, found this site too..

It is a possibility:). I already own the base game and wasn't that impressed, but that was before all the patches. I am really considering the dlc since I prefer that part of the wAr. Even though multiple download sites, seems limited content.

Does this work with iron front? Didn't see it mentioned on the site.
Actually figured it out and the answer was yes.....
This tool looks amazing especially for people like me who find it hard to use mission editors.....this might be the thing that makes me re-install the game and buy the DLC.
Planned assault rules.
So.....is there meant to be another campaign showing up in the list? I only have the 2x For the Fatherland and 2xFor the Motherland scenarios - so I have NO IDEA if it installed or not
When I bought this last night, the INSTALL button (shown after I had bought it) didn't do anything as I was reinstalling Iron Front 1944...but when I went to the Iron Front D:Day 1944 DLC page, it says "You already own Iront Front : D-Day 1944 DLC" and there's a Play Now button - but there are no other options in the game AND as I said - the install button didn't seem to do anything last night?
Also the editor is only showing Poland and Ukraine and the expansions tab is only showing Iron Front
I don't think this installed...but I can't seem to tell if in game if it is and can't see how to get the install button back!
Any help would be appreciated - so I can get back to Steam.
It's ok. I uninstalled Iron Front 1944 and reinstalled it. There was then an additional DLC option in game which I was able to enable and there are other scenarios showing.
Sometimes the client won't immediately start installing DLC. In that case, just close the client and restart it. Or you can right click the game in your Library, choose Properties, then go over to the Local Files tab and choose Verify Integrity of Game Cache. Either one 'wakes it up'.

I wanted to repeat this for dramatic effect, and because it is very true.
Sometimes I just cannot believe how stupid I am!!
I don't know what they've fixed, but it's not the crappy campaign.
I guess I should've loaded the game and tried the patched version before I gave them more of my money.
Oh well - maybe this time I'll listen to my head "next time"!

Yeah...chill out dude. Its a great game. You're just playing it wrong.
The stock game is not a great game - it's broke. It's hit and miss whether triggers work or not. I don't know how manytimes I've played the mission where you unload the PAK...but each time, somewhere where there's meant to be a trigger...it doesn't go off.
With the patched version tonight I waited quite some time (having been given no orders) for the Russian tanks only to have to start running about looking for the trigger. The officer that turns up saying to hold the xroads doesn't leave (as he did last time I played this), I wasn't ordered to go to the windmill (as I was last time) to spot the enrmy mortars,.
I eventually went myself to the windmill only to come under fire from the Russians I knew were there...but this time there were a bunch of Germans up there standing right next to them doing absolutely nothing.
I went to the windmill, spotted the mortars...still no assault. I went back to the xroads...nothing...got bored and started shooting my own troops and exited.
It looks great. As a multiplayer game it may be great. As a sandbox game it may be great...but the campaign (at least the German one I played) is not only not great but doesn't work.
I don't know if we have the same game...but mine is broke!

Like I said, you're playing it wrong. Use Planned Assault to create missions. It is quick and so easy, a lobotomized monkey could use it. The program writes the scripting for you, and with scripting, the combat is much more believable and you don't have to rely so much on the brain dead AI. The campaign and stock scenarios are very loosely scripted and that is part of the problem. Avoid the stock campaigns and scenarios...they will only frustrate you. Make a quick mission through the PA website, load it up, then come back here and tell me I was right.
My bad. I thought you were suggesting the stock campaign was fine and I was playing those wrong.
I fully intend to give PA a work through now I know of it.
its the only way to play. as Checlo said on his blog site, open the editor, put some baddies on it and play the game

i started with a basic 4 men go here and defend town against these 4 men
my next mission was helicopter 4 guys to this place, kill these guys triggering reinforcements, rescue the hostage whilst fighting off reinforcements, call in rescue chopper and escape like the wind
next one is a normandy one, im just thinking of a scenario i can believe in

I agree, when I have some time I've got to sit down and mess around with this Planned Assault website.
Planned assault missions are simple. It just a matter of who's attacking and defending what areas with what assets. Just like a DIY scenario in Steel Panthers. It does not do elaborate scripts and tasks like when you use the editor.
But it shines in creating large coordinated combined arms battles easily. Very fitting for the WW2 setting of iron front.

Agreed.
For instance...last night, in about 5 minutes, I created an air assault mission with three sections of MH-60s carrying in total about 60 Marines. The objective was to clear all insurgents from an airfield. We launched a three pronged assault landing at 2 different LZs. The insurgents goal was simple. Hold and deny while inflicting as many casualties as possible. The Marines had a section of AH-1Z Cobra Gunships for support.
Needless to say, the mission was totally kick a$$.

Yep...you create the mission on the PA website. Then the program creates the mission file in .rar format and you download and install it just like any other mission.
So, now 3 or 4 grog heads could do a co-oop mission together using this tool? Or would you need to rent a server to do that?
I signed up on the Planned Assault site and mess around making a quick mission for Iron Front. I can already tell I am going to like this. The mission I made was quick and easy but more fun the the stock scenarios in the game. ;D
Thanks for posting that info up JH. I haven't gotten into IF44 yet because...well, I just haven't. But that Planned Assault thing sounds like EXACTLY what I need to get motivated to boot this up finally.
Signed up, created a mission and realised I didn't have ArmA II installed. It seemed very easy to make a mission though
I was a little confused with the versions of Armed Assault though. No PA's fault...I just wasn't sure what I had bought. Turns out I have OA and Brits.

My pleasure...let me know what you think once you get rolling.
Can I ask please - when you go to place your units, is there ANY way to zoom in on the map? I haven't found it yet and my units (enemy and friendly) end up in not great positions
Nope. Each square is just a hundred meters I think. So keep them spread out. Don't make missions where attacker and defenders are just a few squares away.
We had a great turn out on Saturday and played for about three hours. The main mission was an infiltration mission. We played as a team of German sappers tasked with sneaking through Soviet lines and destroying a fuel depot.
We spent almost 40 very tense minutes stealthily moving through Soviet defenses. We got into position and our 4 man team of sappers were going to attempt to crawl up and place charges around the fuel trucks in the depot while three squads provided security.
Here's a video of what happened.

These have been really fun videos to watch, appreciate you sharing them.
Maybe I should join up with you lot. Are other people allowed? If so what time GMT do you play?
Because of these videos and this thread, just purchased the D-Day content myself:( I am weak...

Looks like another fun mission.
These vids are outstanding, even astonishing, and better than any war movie I've ever seen. Interesting too how different it all plays out with real people invovled than in games like the Combat Mission series.

Haha. Shooting an MG42 without bipod support. Quite interesting.
The scout cars can be defeated by shooting the wheels first. Then pick off the gunner in the open top.
^ I thought that.
strange as the game is pretty realistic in some ways. Mind you - there's virtually nowhere to "rest" said bipod and going prone is useless.
Is there a key to "extend" the bipod and steady the gun?
Awesome Video again, thanks for sharing!

Yes, everyone is welcome. Just go over to SimHQ (http://www.simhq.com/index.html) and register for the forums. Once you're registered, go to the main screen and on the right hand side, you'll see the TeamSpeak list and link. Click on the link and you'll get the TS password. Iron Front server password is found in the Iron Front sub-forum.
We play on Saturdays starting at 1pm PST/ pm EST/ 9pm GMT. We have quite a few Brits who play as well as a group of Russians who show up intermittently. The Brits are going to set up another playing session at a time they find more convenient. When exactly that will be is still under discussion.

That mission was a tough one. The fuel depot was located at a crossroads surrounded by nothing but open fields on three sides. We spent a long time sneaking around to the south, then west until we reached a ditch with some tree cover and then snuck up north to approach the depot from the west where we had some cover from shrubs and barns. Unfortunately we were spotted and the AI did a good job of collapsing in on us from all directions. There were two scout cars to the east and south east. Both stayed well back and just hammered us with their .50s while the infantry moved up and hit us with grenades. 40 minutes of sneaking only to have all 22 players cut down within 5 minutes....
SDR, are you saying the missions you guys play are against the AI versus other human teams? If so, that appears to be some impressive AI, which is good to see.
I purchased and messed around with the new D-Day content this morning. Mainly was trying the sniper mission where you have two snipers trying to eliminate a German leader. This one is driving my crazy a little since I am finding it hard to control the other sniper. I put the person in stealth mode and tell him to hold fire so we can sneak to the main target. But he doesn't want to listen. Everytime he sees an enemy, even if it is a tank, he opens fire which gives us away. I am thinking when I try this mission again, I am just going to shoot my partner sniper and go it alone:)
The AI is very hit-or-miss. Sometimes it will react in what seems like a very aggressive manner and use effective tactics. Other times, enemies will mill around like imbeciles, charging across an open field, face first into machine-gun fire. Other times they won't react at all. I think the soft vehicle driver AI routines are probably the screwiest. We have a number of convoy ambush missions that we play and drivers will often veer off the road and start driving around the map in random directions. It's not uncommon to see one truck calmly try to execute a 3 point turn and drive off in the direction it came from all while it's getting riddled with small arms fire.
We play a combination of co-op missions (human vs. ai) and player-vs-player missions. We usually have 2 or 3 "main" co-op missions that tend to be the most complex and time consuming. We play one of those, then 15-20 minutes of PVP firefights and then go into another co-op mission.
As for your sniper mission, are you sure you've got the AI sniper selected? You will see stealth and hold fire icons appear on his unit box if you've successfully given the orders.

Yep, it shows the proper symbols on the sniper's picture. Not sure why he chooses to open fire.
Strange. I had no such problem when I played that scenario. Maybe try to order him to hold back?
Signed up for an ID on SIMHQ.. tested TS connectivity.. hope to join this afternoon's battles!
Well the little bastards fired up Dance Dance Revolution about 5 minutes ago so I might as well shoot some virtual people in the face.

Given the choice I would take the second option every time :)
Worst day ever. I think I died within the first 2 minutes of every mission we tried.
That was a lot of fun SDR.. thanks!
I don't want to start a new thread on Planned Assault, so I'm just going to put this here.
Is there any way to share created missions with one another besides uploading them to another site?
Alternatively, can you guys post up any good ideas you've created that make for fun missions?
I truly am a novice at land warfare, and my missions I'm creating suck pretty bad. I'd like to play some armor missions, in both IF and regular ARMA2 if possible. I like missions with fairly low unit density. But I don't have any good ideas of OOB, what map to use, etc.

I m thinking the only options are uploading to some site, sending by email, or give your planned assault login credentials to the person and they can just use your account (kidding of course).

Heh. Glad somebody enjoyed it. I think the tank assault mission was the only one I survived. Got killed by that AT gun in the crossroads assault. Got killed by a mortar as I tried to run up the beach on the Omaha one and I got machine gunned by a half-track as I crawled through a hedgerow on the pilot rescue mission (I think you'd logged out already for that one. We all died.)
This Saturday's session is going to be an early start. 7am PST/10 am EST.
Why so early :-(
They've got some Daytona 500 sim event planned for most of the day so we got bumped. I think it'll be a pretty light turn out. It'll be back to the regular time the week after.
EDIT: I got the dates wrong. This Saturday is the normal time. February 9th is the early start.
I'll probably be there SDR.. I believe I've completed enough "To Do" stuff today to be free! 8)
Not on Steam though, cause my 17 year old's using my ID to play CKII with the 13 year old..
I'll be there as well. Sounds like it's going to be PvP focused today. I expect to die a lot.
Bit of a smaller turnout today and some problems with buggy mission scripts at the start but the last couple of missions were pretty good.
Tuna, did you even get to fire a shot in that pilot rescue mission? I didn't. Man, that dude playing the scout could talk! Couldn't even hear squad channel chat over him gobbing off.
Fired a few.. 5 seconds of firefight!.. lol. .I still enjoyed it though..
First mission, I got killed immediately.. Friendly Fire.. think it was the Pilot Mission's Scout Leader ;-)
He apologized quickly.. good bunch of guys..
Couple of videos from last Saturday's session.
The first is a repeat of a German raid on a Soviet supply dump. Last time, we spent 40 minutes sneaking only to get surrounded and cut down. This time we went straight in. Video POV is from the medic's eyes so you don't see as much as he's usually keeping down and back. There's some chatter in the beginning about US units. Some of the guys without the Normandy DLC couldn't log in to play even though the scenario was Germans vs. Soviets and that was because the Soviets were using some US lend-lease gear like jeeps and an M3 scout car.
Second video is an American raid on a German HQ. Squad leader was operating on only a few hours sleep so things were a little haphazard.
