Title: Eador: Genesis
Post by: Jarhead0331 on December 04, 2012, 09:43:21 AM
Anybody heard of this fantasy themed TBS game?  Sounds pretty interesting...like a mix of Civilization, Shadow of Magic, Heroes of M&M and Master of Magic all wrapped up into one game.

Apparently, it has been out for awhile, but it has just been released in English on gog.com.

http://www.gog.com/gamecard/eador_genesis (http://www.gog.com/gamecard/eador_genesis)

Quote
What's cool about it:

The critically acclaimed indie TBS inspired by classic strategy games, now available for the first time in English.

A balanced fusion of grand strategy, turn-based tactics, and RPG elements.

Over 170 buildings, 80 spells, and 70 units available that can be used in any combination.

Overview:

Eador is a universe made of countless shards of land drifting in the Great Nothing. Each of the shards is a little world unto itself, with geography and citizens of its own. The power over the shards is bitterly contested by Masters, the immortal beings mortals believe to be gods.

Take the role of a mighty Master and shape the destiny of Eador, on land and within the astral plane itself. Explore the land and rule provinces as you see fit, defend them, and keep the populace in line or they may rebel. Choose from thousands of items--swords, spells, weapons, armor, and more--to outfit the heroes you recruit so they may best meet any challenge. Keep your heroes healthy and they will grow stronger as they gain experience from battle. Forge alliances and engage in the delicate art of diplomacy as you negotiate trade agreements or wage war against a mutual foe. Eador with its many wonders and adventures awaits, will you answer the call?

I thought that looked very familiar....

http://www.snowbirdgames.com/eador/?lang=en

Seems this is a "newer" version with "upgraded" graphics that's not out yet..... I'm sure someone brought this version up here months ago.

Fer $5 bucks I'm tempted to buy the GOG version....

Lol... I was going to post this today.....  I believe this was only released in Russian so I am not sure there are many who have played it previously.  I did see the updated version on Steam Greenlight.  It looks interesting and I was wanting to ready more user reviews on GOG.

isnt that masters of the broken world, or the other way round?

the new updated one looks great, early 2013 i think

I'd spot someone the $5 purchase price if they would write a comprehensive English review of the game and publish it in the forum or the frontpage.

They sound a lot a like.  I wasn't really paying attention until I read the GOG.com description.

Master of the Broken World goes into Beta on the 10th.  I've applied, but I don't know if they are still accepting applications.

This is indeed the precursor, and from what I understand there is no English manual.  It looks deep, so there might be a steep learning curve.  I just bought it, and will report back when I have time.

Yeah, I've been waiting for the updated version (or sequel?).  If the original is any good, though, I'd love to know.

I bought it but I am gonna be busy for the next while.

I never played HOMM 4.  For that matter, I've never played any of the HOMM.  The premise sounds good though.  I'll be looking forward to impressions.

Oh, wait.  I'm thinking of HoMM3, I think.  Anyway, it looks a lot like it.   If it has more depth to it, then that can only be a good thing because I felt the HoMM series needed something more.

Like fallen ent. I'm disappointed I'm capable of saving the day with me and my friends from the pub! Change the sprites to goblin army instead goblin and I might be more immerssed, but my 8 friends v yours doesn't sound like the world is in that much danger
Title: Re: Eador: Genesis

I played a bit more of the campaign, and the strategic layer reminds me more of the TW series than HoMM. The only thing I dislike is the cheesy combat animations, but I'm sure that will be fixed for the new version.

I just don't understand you guys' hang-ups on troop scaling.  It's been done in every medium, especially much-vaunted tabletop wargames.   Does it really make a big purchasing difference if something has, for example, a 5-to-1 or 10-to-1 troop to model ratio in the graphics display?  AFAIK, it's very rare for games portraying armies to display them on a 1 for 1 basis.

Or does each 'soldier' in this game have his own equipment and other individualities?

Interesting game indeed. Never heard about it before.
Will Master of the Broken World be an actual upgraded version of this or is it a new game with different gameplay mechanics?
Eador seems deep. I am looking forward to reading more impressions from you guys.

i dont think theres any abstraction though - it literally is my giant, my scout, my eagle, my wizard versus what ever motley crew the AI has pulled together - does that sound like we're battling to save the broken worlds of wherever, it just isnt GRAND enough!!  :)

LOL!  Well.. not so much in that case, but it's not the first to have such a story, either.   That's practically every RPG ever made!  And some strategy ones to boot! ;D

So far I have had no problem running Eador: Genesis on my 64-bit Windows 7 PC. The game is much deeper than Heroes of Might and Magic III and Warlock: Master of the Arcane, although it has elements in common with both of those games. The easiest way into Eador: Genesis is to do the campaign, which includes a tutorial. Otherwise the learning curve will be a bit much.

My only problem with the small number of units is that apparently they can only be produced in your capitol, which means that with only one hero (at least in the early campaign), you've got to do a lot of shlepping back and forth to replace any lost in battle.

It does have single-player sandbox and I think the maps are random.  But you will still have to go through the campaign to learn the game.

It has MP (in contrast with what was said), including Hotseat mode.
So the HS mode lets you pretty much learn the game at your leisure :)

Just ran it to see wether it would start, but it does. However, is there a way to change the resolution of the game?
It seems fixed at 1024x768 and nowhere in the options I can find a resolution setting?

Bought it but can't get it to run in fullscreen mode. There's a file called Eador.cfg in the game directory that lets you change some options. When I try fullscreen the game becomes ultra laggy and unresponsive.  :-\

I'm trying desperately to allot some time to this game.  Since my most recent Minecraft ragequit (in which I lost all my diamond and obsidian) I doubt I'll be going back to it any time soon, so hopefully this week I'll get a few hours in.

What I can say so far is that it certainly looks like a very deep game.  The interface isn't pretty but it works well enough, and the tutorial does seem decent.  I haven't finished the tutorial yet but so far it has taken me through everything I've needed to do in detail.  I have a really good feeling about this one. :)

Any other user feedback yet?  3 pages of posts expressing excitement, and I'd love some more thoughts from Huw or first impressions from somebody else!

I've been having lots of fun playing FTL, but my wife was a huge Heroes fan back in the day (before the franchise started to be a bunch of crappy, poorly developed money-makers coasting in on the name of the franchise).  If it's got even comparable gameplay to H3 or H4, at that price, I'd be all over it.

My big beef was H4 was the crappy map development, the horrrid voice acting/cut scenes, and the idiotic Adventure Map AI.  If this game is built such that you don't even notice these things (because they're not there, or because they're masked skillfully with other design decisions), I'm snapping this one up in a moment.

Eador: Masters of the Broken World has been on my radar for a few months now, and I'm very excited whenever that one might hit the market!  If this is a cheap way to get a teaser, I'm all up for that.   :)

What do you mean by crappy map development?  There are no cut scenes or voice acting; so far, in the campaign (still in tutorial phase though) there's the occasional text box/portrait of an advisor but that's it.

I've been playing it for a few hours now and it definately reminds me of the HoMM games of old (3 mainly) and Age of Wonders.
Its fun to play has pretty decent graphics and tells a great story. The translation seems to be done very well too, so far. No weird texts found.

The only thing that annoys me is that there are no tactical battle unit animations. A thing we have been spoiled with in the King's Bounty and HoMM 5 and 6 games, IMO. Those animations were fluid and spectacular, but in Eador the units just slide over the map and attack by quickly moving towards and away from the enemy unit. Hopefully this is better in the new game.

But we have to remember that the game is an indie game made by only one guy. If you keep that in mind it is an outstanding job!
It certainly fixes the Heroes itch if you might have it.

I move my mouse pointer to the lower-right region of the screen.  Crashes every time.  I've tried everything, and it happens in windowed as well as full screen.  I actually managed to set aside the evening to play, too.  I'm pissed off.

It was running fine when I played this morning!  Oh well, I've emailed GOG.  Fingers crossed.

In various different campaign maps, they had sections of the map that were utterly inaccessible.  Some of the critical stuff was fixed (eventually) in bug fixes, but other maps just had populated dead zones with lots of interesting stuff, but no way to get there that I could find.

I've had no problems at all.

I asked the developer how different races affect play on the strategic level, and here is his reply:

QuoteEach race has an alignment, elves don't like to be oppressed by an evil master, orcs can't tolerate a goody-two-shoes ruler etc. Also, non-human provinces have some specific events exclusive for their races.

More importantly, when you enter a non-human province, you may (depending on your karma) offer this race an alliance, and having sealed the alliance by completing a quest, you get to construct their special buildings in your foreign quarter and recruit their special units.

Well I cracked and played for an hour and a half.  Now it's late and I'm going to be tired all day tomorrow.  The resolution is not an issue for me.  Frankly I think it scales just right for my laptop screen.  I've encountered none of the issues I read about on the gog forums.  It plays silky smooth.  The lack of unit action in the battle really doesn't bother me.  I'm really liking the simplicity and the look of the units.  Not going to jump up and down and claim greatest game e'vah just yet, but it's fun and relaxing.  I did get killed by some ogres which made me realize there is no save other than an auto save.   This baby is hardcore.  None of that I didn't get the result I wanted so let me load up a previous save stuff.  Not sure what that means for the future, but I can tell you I've been much more cautious after my party wiped in my second non-tutorial battle.

SoM, no the resolution is fixed.

Bison, yeah pretty much my sentiments too. I would have liked battle animations, but it doesn't bother me that much either that they aren't there.
Hardcore it is. Even smallish thugs can make your army wither quickly if you aren't careful.

OK.  I'm really, really enjoying this game.  It's going to take FOREVER to beat it.

I will note that my laptop experiences neither lag or mouse issues; I cannot say the same for my desktop.  Not sure why this is but it is a real issue that seems to vary system to system.  I did run two instances of the game and it took care of most of the mouse and fps issues.  Weird but there it is.

Ok there is no manual.  For the most part the game is self explanitory with a lot of tool tips and in game descriptions.  However there is this http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=ru&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Feador.com%2Fen%2Findex.html&act=url  which seems to do a decent job of translating the text.

In Eador if they ask you if you want to throw a rock in a calm pool of water, your answer should ALWAYS be no.  If you foolishly say yes, this is what crawls out of the pool.

I started with a Mage-type hero, and picked up some Necromancy.   Groovy.

Sure saves some upkeep costs when you can just replace dead pitchfork armed peasants with skeletons that don't eat.  :D

Yeah my first hero was a Mage Necromancer, which was pretty sweet.  On the second shard I tried the ranger hero.   They are great at exploring but really lack at leading your armies at low levels.   I'm using a Commander on my latest shard.  He seems to be pretty good but I'm hoping to find some necromancy scrolls for the raise a unit spell.

If you have units of the opposite alignment in your army.

I hired a Barbarian unit (somewhat evil?) and he actually gained +2 Morale rating due to being in an army with the "Evil Incarnate" undead skellies.  :)  The peasant troops were Neutral alignment so there was no change.

Has there been any noted hardware pattern involved?

I've not experienced any issue on Win7-64 yet.  So I'm guessing it's hardware specific, or other software is interfering?

Maybe the i-series chips' speed throttling isn't working well with it?  My quad core & chipset is an AMD, not Intel, and running Eador great.   Hopefully they've been able to narrow it down because it really sounds like a compatibility issue, probably in the hardware.   :-[

I'm running two versions of the i5.  One has issues the other doesn't.  Running Nvidia cards in both.  The newer, more powerful rig is the one with the issues.  I'm not sure anyone really knows what is happening.  I've read many of the theories and suppossed fixes over at gog.  And like most games with issue like this some find the home remedy fixes work others don't.  I guess the upside is that this risk costs you $5 instead of $40-60.  If the game works, it's a real gem of a game.

I received the following suggestions from GOG regarding my reproducible CTD:

Quote1) Please make sure that you use "Run as Administrator" to install and to start the game (right click on the shortcut or setup file and select "Run as Administrator").

2) Please reinstall the game to a simpler path (like: C:\Games).

3) Install the June 2010 DirectX runtime package, then use the DirectX web installer, as your current DirectX may have become corrupt over time.

You can find the ZIP file containing the 2010 package installation files here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=3b170b25-abab-4bc3-ae91-50ceb6d8fa8d

You will have to extract the files into some folder, then open that folder and launch the DXSETUP.exe file in order to proceed with the installation.

Afterwards, download the latest DirectX web installer and use it as well:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

4) Please update your graphics card drivers:
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx

5) Please try DxWnd to make the game work in windowed mode:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/

None of them worked.  At Geek's suggestion I also tried reinstalling and that didn't work either.  In the end I put it down to a corrupt save and started again.  That's fine in practise since I wasn't far into the tutorial, but obviously dreadful in principle, especially considering the way this game handles saves.  If I'd lost a lot of time to this bug I think the red mist would have descended.

Masters of the Broken World had better be 100% Win7-64 compatible.

Yeah pretty much sums up the overall responses to the issue people are having.  Here's a bunch of mumbo jumbo to try and fix the game.  It's not the hardware or the OS.  It's something to do with how the game is coded.

That's my feeling too.  I'm not a developer so I won't pretend to claim it's anyone's fault in particular, but I won't accept any excuses with the remake due in 2013.

The really odd thing is that it is not an across the board issue.  Like I've said, my laptop Win7 64 bit with an i5 cpu has no issues at all with the game.  Unfortunately I doubt this one will be fixed, which is too bad, with all efforts being put into the new version.

Yes, full screen resolution. When I change the setting to Fullscreen in Eador.cfg I can see the game menu (in full screen!) but the game is unplayable. It probably is a GPU problem. It does work fine in Windowed mode though so I can't complain too much.  :P
Title: Re: Eador: Genesis
Post by: Nefaro on December 19, 2012, 05:24:22 PM
It only has one or two display resolutions.

So if you have a hi-res widescreen monitor, you'll see black bars on the side.  If you have a smaller monitor, or laptop, it will fill much of it if not all.

Looks like it runs in 1024x768 resolution and holds that with the black bars if your display is larger.  So there's no stretch - that or if your vid card is set to stretch lower resolution sizes to fit, and it doesn't do that on it's own... it could be one of the crash issues.  I have mine set to keep the original resolution in the video card settings , and it works fine.  I hate the stretch, makes it look out of focus and smeared.  Sounds like the game doesn't want to be stretched if you try to force it, though.

I have my vid card set to keep the original resolution, so there's no stretch.  Were both of you guys having display issues?  Perhaps the stretching had something to do with it, too?

I've been playing this one a bit more, and I'm very impressed.  Pays homage to HoMM3 but introduces other game play elements all its own (while maybe borrowing one or two from the Dominions series?).

How many other good games are waiting out there to be translated into English?

I often wonder this.  A large number of my favourite games of the last decade have come from eastern Europe.  If only there was more money in the market there, imagine what else we'd see.

I am looking forward to the HD reboot of Space Rangers 2.

:o

I didn't know they were making an HD version of it.  Dayum.  That gonna be on GOG too, I wonder?

I fire up the SR2 Reboot version fairly regularly, but it'd be nice to run it at something over 1024x768.

Hey! Some of us might need exclamation marks, and now you've gone and used them all;

See? See what's happened now? Thanks a lot, Huw:

I also had no idea this was coming. Very cool.

OK, just won my second shard.

Here are a couple of gameplay tips for you'all. I have about ... 30 hours in the game. Nice to be on vacation all week!

1) Start with the Scout, and get a big bow. Work hard to extend the range of his attacks. It is VERY useful to take out an enemy ranged attacker every turn
2) A balance of other troops is essential. 50% melee, to defend the ranged attackers, and 50% ranged attackers, to attrite the enemy before they smack into your melee troops
3) Get the Library, Sorcerer's building, and Temple ASAP. Hire the wizard that gives you the healing ability every three turns. This will enable your hurt army to stay in the field longer, assuming that you haven't lost any troops.
4) Use a second field commander to shuttle troops to your Alpha Stack. No lost turns running back home to reload troops
5) Build mines on hilly territories, mills on flat lands. +5 gold, per turn, for each one of these you do. After awhile, money is not an issue, and you can start building up a second alpha stack, then a third.
6) Use your alpha stack to contain the enemy wizards...keep him on the front lines
7) Explore, to 100%, all your provinces. You gain exploration points, even if you turn down the fight offered.
8) Use a hero, by himself, to explore to 100% areas in the rear, that are safe from enemy wizards' attacks.
9) When you see a shop selling goods, SAVE YOUR MONEY! The items you can buy in these shops are amazing, vastly better than anything you can build.

That's all for now. This game isn't that hard, but it is deceptively deep.

Thanks Dennis.  Heh, a lot of those tips apply to the Disciples games too. :)

In terms of #5, regarding your late-game advice, I think it depends on the type of shard you're on.  Terrain types dictate the gold-vs-crystal production piece, and they also dictate how quickly you can explore a province (e.g., it's easier to explore Plains than Swamp).

I haven't played the game enough to disagree, but as you say, the game is deceptively deep!
