Title: Bioshock Infinite
Post by: Gusington on March 23, 2013, 02:36:02 PM
The force is strong with this one. Set in the steampunkish floating city of Columbia, I do not know if I can resist its pull. Plus it got a glowing early review from IGN (for consoles):

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/03/22/bioshock-infinite-xbox-360ps3-review

If the console version is that good, I can't be expected to hold out very long when the PC version is released this week. Anyone else chomping at the bit like me? Note I have not played either of the previous Bioshock games.

Been debating this one myself....greenmangaming has a decent deal for getting it around $45 and you get three free games with it....

I somehow ended up pre-ordering it in a moment if weakness about a month ago.  The Gamersgate pre-order included a copy of the original Bioshock, $20 back in in-store credit, a copy of XCOM, and your choice of on of the following games:  Bioshock 2, Spec Ops-The Line, Mafia 2, The Darkness 2, or Civ V.

I thought that was a pretty good offer except I already owned every one of the giveaway games except Bioshock 2 and Darkness 2.

Crap, I ordered direct from Steam and got none of that. Note: Greenmangaming sometimes is slow with getting the codes (see the Omerta thread).

BTW, Steam did give me a free copy of the new XCOM if anyone with Steam is interested.

I really like Bioshock and Bioshock 2, so I'll be getting this one at some point in the future.

That is for sure...but at the prices/deals GMG have been offering of late, I am getting to the point where waiting an extra day or two is fine.  Most of these games are released during the week while I work so I have very little time to play on release day anyway.

Nope.  I bought Infinite through Gamersgate so haven't yet activated it via Steam.  Perhaps XCOM will show up when I do on the 26th.

Yeah, I think so. I'm really kicking myself for not checking Gamersgate first. Although I have the game pre-loaded, which is nice.

Yeah you some team fortress crap instead of spec ops, but whatever.  It's Xcom you want anyway.  You have to pre-order so I think you only have through tomorrow to order it pre-order.

Right I have to decide...I think 20.00 for Bioshock: Infinite, 20.00 for XCom and 20.00 for 'whatevs' is a decent deal.

EDIT: NM. When I pulled up the Bioshock page the background splash screen was for Resident Evil. I refreshed and now I see the Bioshock goodies

I entered the activation code from Gamersgate on Steam and it's now pre-loading.  I already got Bioshock and Bioshock 2 when I pre-ordered a few weeks ago but I still haven't received the X-COM code. Gamersgate didn't initially offer XCOM as a pre-order bonus.  It showed up in the ad a few weeks after I pre-ordered.  The ad says they'll still give it to those who already pre-ordered before the XCOM addition. I wonder if I'm not seeing it because I already purchased it from Gamersgate when it was first released?  Oh well, no matter.  I'll fire off an email and if it doesn't show up, I won't be too bothered.

I am going to be mature about this. I am getting deep into modded Civ V, enjoying Mark of the Ninja, and getting ready for a new Fall of the Samurai campaign. Going to hold off on the new Bioshock for lack of time and wait for a future sale...same with XCom.

I'm sitting on the fence with this one.  I never played any of the Bioshock titles because their settings just didn't interest me.  The same for this latest entry.  The whole thing with a religious cult built around the Founding Fathers just rubs me a bit wrong.  I'm not judging the game without playing it - but I can wait to play it.   ;D

The first was a very well told story about the inevitable failure of a society built on Libertarian/Objectivist principles once taken to an extreme

The second was a cash grab based on the success of the first with a fairly good story about the inevitable failure of a society built on collectivist principles once taken to an extreme.

The third sounds as though it's going ot be about the failure of a society built on theocratic/exclusionary principles taken to an extreme.

Jump in the pool, there's something to offend everyone!

It definitely looks like Columbia is a utopian technocratic society with strong religious leanings. I'm guessing they are also imperialists and social Darwinists. There was something that smacked of John Noyes (Oneida Community) or Cyrus Teed (Koreshan Unity). As I'm hugely interested in US Communal Utopianism, I think this one will be smashing! The name Comstock also makes it even better, since the real Anthony Comstock was a verifiable nut who had WAY too much power.

I've pre-ordered mine and will pick it up from GameStop tomorrow. (XBOX version)

Played 1, and loved it.  Especially it's take on Ayn Rand Objectivism.

Own 2 but have not played it yet.

When I get Infinite it will unfortunately go on hold for a bit due to my current obsession: Gears of War: Judgement

^That's what I'm saying...even if I bought it and got XCom and who knows what else I am finally at a point where I am starting to enjoy my 'gaming now' instead of prowling for the 'next big thing.' I have enough unplayed games to last me until Infinite goes on sale. In theory. Regardless of the glowing reviews it will still be a good game a year from now.

I think have finally beaten the release day fixation.

Wow!  I love the look of the world they've created.    The music is also great and this is coming from a guy who usually turns music off in 99% of games.  The barbershop quartet on the floating gondola was fantastic.

The gameplay is pretty much the same as the previous Bioshock/System Shock games.  Now plasmids are called vigors but they basically do the same things.  Fire, electricity, hacking, etc.  I haven't played too much as I spend a tonne of time just roaming around Columbia enjoying the sights.  Once the actual game did kick off I was a little disappointed.  I don't like having someone else's moral choice rammed down my throat.  I really, really wanted to throw the baseball at the chick....

Didn't you have the option to do so? Also, how heinous!  :P

I'm really liking the game so far. I was right to assume that Social Darwinism and White Man's Burden/Racism/Imperialism would highly feature in this one. The game is not as "creepy" as Bioshock, but it is much more unnerving in the casual way it deals with taboo (by modern day) subjects. I don't want to spoil, but man I've been a little "woah" at some of the things I have seen.

No.  They took my baseball away from be before I could chuck it.  Bastards....

I'm not that far into it yet but I do get a bit miffed when a game forces moral choice upon me.  Maybe it's the contrarian but when someone tries to force me to feel or think something, it makes me become reactionary and want to take up the opposing view, just out of spite.  At this juncture, I want to join the quasi-Masonic Raven dudes and worship Booth.

Yeah, I'm fairly certain that 2K would have gotten into HUGE trouble if they made a game where you could side with the racists...  ;)

The baseball scene (without spoiling) was the real "beginning" of the game. It turned my stomach.

Still not there. I guess I wasn't expecting such a scene, which is why it was shocking. Up until then, Columbia was overtly religious but not so creepy. It goes way downhill from there.

Finished it.  The title makes a lot more sense now.

That got pretty mind-f@#kery in the end.  Overall I thought it was a very good game.  It took me 11 hours to complete it and I felt I got my money's worth.  I liked it about the same as the original Bioshock but not quite as much as System Shock 2.

TIP, watch all of the end credits as there's a bit at the end that might help clear up questions about the ending.

11 hours is pretty standard for a FPS, and I have to say that I'm starting to feel the "ok, it is time to get this show brought to a close." That isn't to say I am getting bored with it, I really love the game and the setting, but I think it is a natural sense of "there are only so many times I can desperately struggle to reach my destination."

At first I was thinking that there are far fewer interesting audio journals that move the story forward than in Bioshock. But then I realized that this one uses character-to-character dialog much much more (notably with Elizabeth). In Bioshock, everyone was a degenerated and demented psychopath due to rampant Adam use. Here, they are still human - they just hold values and goals that are antithetical to most modern people's values. So you can talk directly to the bad guys more frequently in BS:I.

Elizabeth steals the show. The new character model is much more reasonable (although still *distracting* at certain parts), her face is expressive - mixing naivete with deep knowledge - and she evoked a guardian-protector emotional response from me. Her voice is spot on. Booker is a bit of a flat character, but that is always the case when you voice your player character (in a sense).

Certainly this isn't System Shock 2, but there are aspects of it that make it equal to Bioshock (IMHO). It doesn't have the same creepy, horror setting - this one is more dystopian sci fi and psychological revulsion than "OMG THERE IS A GIANT DIVING SUIT MONSTER STALKING ME FOR DRAINING THE LIFE FROM A CREEPY GLOWING EYED GIRL." But that is ok, because Bioshock Infinite delivers.

Also - Steampunk.

No, I would say not. It is considerably more bloody than Skyrim (you can viscerally rip a person's head off with your sky claw). It also deals very openly with racism in a way that takes fairly mature mind to best process. I think that aspect would be the most problematic - the entire game revolves around a social critique on American manifest destiny and exceptionalism, religious fanaticism, and social Darwinism. Those are topics most 14 year olds have not be exposed to or understand.

That being said, I wouldn't say the game is "worse" in content that Fallout 3, which contains graphic violence and a myriad of adult themes.

Agreed.

A not-so-subtle message from the devs.

Infinite looks steampunky enough to be interesting, but stepping into the political realm as noted by SoM isn't exactly a smart marketing move IMHO. I'm interested in gaming, not discussing 9th grade civic history. This is likely to be a bargain bin purchase - if that.

You are doing this game a HUGE disservice by assuming the Founders are there as some Leftist attack on the *modern* Right. The politics it criticizes are largely from the time period of the game - the late-1800s and early-1900s. The "cult of the Founding Fathers" is interesting, and - IMHO - is not an indictment about the Founders and more the skewed perspective on the Founders of the late-1800s US Jingoist Imperialist. The "rebels" have a fascination with Lincoln (and the "bad-guys" despise Lincoln). I actually see it as a commentary on post-reconstruction American divisions of class, race, ethnicity, and religion. Don't assume that the "anti-Founder" faction is any better behaved or presented- they represent the anarchist movements of the same era.

There are much more disturbing things in the game than the treatment of the Founders (which is really not representative of the actual Founders). One worry I have is that the dialog brought up by the game will have some people saying things that are not particularly pleasant. The treatment of race runs the risk of pushing people into confronting the social remnants of segregation mentality, social Darwinism, and racial stereotypes (that still exist). Further, the treatment of religion, which is much more clearly Christianity than a Founder's cult, will certainly have some people miffed. I'm not saying that Christianity is viewed as the cause of all the bad stuff, but overzealous Christianity is not made to look particularly pleasant. The ending may have some people very ruffled.

If anything, the game confronts the player with actual negative mindsets, events, propaganda, beliefs, and actions that are part of America's history (the Battle of Bull Run and the Boxer Rebellion factor largely in the narrative). Many of these still haunt the present. As a historian, I think that people should know and think about our country's history in a critical way - you can't whitewash the past and expect to get a good future. But I do worry if this is the proper medium or the proper gravity with which to do so.

That all being said, I think Bioshock Infinite is one of my top favorite games of all time. More so than Bioshock. But it illicited both a visceral and emotional response from me for a variety of reasons intellectual and personal, many of which I would rather not discuss.

I give the developer respect for taking on mature themes. Doing so, even if we don't agree with some of the themes presented, will bring games up from the level of kiddie toys closer to the level of respect held for great movies.

I've just started playing today for about 2 hours.  My initial impressions are that there doesn't seem to be anything controversial...yet.  As I said I still haven't met up with the girl so I've basically gone through the introductory portions of the story.  Great game so far both visually and gameplay wise.  I will say this though, the baseball scene wasn't too horrifying but I chose an option that did not end up particularly bloody.  Those that have played through probably know what I'm talking about but I don't want to give any more detail out lest I spoil it for others.

I don't think it matters which option you choose with the baseball, the outcome will be the same.  There isn't a lot of choice in Infinite. That's one thing I missed from the earlier System Shock and Bioshock games.    SoM said earlier that the devs probably didn't want to go down the road of allowing you to play as a racist and I can see that, but it does seem a bit at odds with their earlier games.  Hell, Bioshock let you decide if you wanted to murder little girls just to feast on the delicious goo inside.

*****SPOILER QUESTION******

What there any difference in the game based on which locket you gave to Elizabeth?  I didn't see it referenced again in the game at all.  I chose the bird.  Anyone know if chosing the cage altered the game in any way?

We need spoiler tags...

*Slight Spoiler Alert* (Highlight the text between the spoiler tags to "see" it)

SDR, given how this all "turns out" I think the lack of choice is intentional. Constants and variables - but the variables are often minute in their impact. I don't think the bird/cage dichotomy has any purpose other than to highlight the constants and variables aspect. Notice, in the final scene before the credits, the brooch is gone...

*Spoiler Off*

Another thing, people need to make sure they watch the credits.

Yes, I think this is true. But there are scenes that don't pull any punches in their delivery. In particular the "Hall of Heroes." That is pretty wild.

I will say one thing, BS:I is one of the few games I want to go back and play a second time right after I beat it. This is what I call the System Shock 2 effect (the only story-game I have beaten like 4 times). That says something.

It sounds to me like this game needs to be reviewed here...

Time for an informal poll!  Which is easier to do :

1. Convince SoM to review a game he really likes

2. Convince Gus to buy a game

One more minor criticism of this otherwise great game.  The box the game comes in is of substandard quality.  The plastic is noticeably thinner then on standard XBOX cases and the tabs where the box snaps shut are flimsy and don't align well.

^No Gus.  This time I'm not kidding.  I really do think the plastic box the game comes in is a tad bit flimsier then the normal game box.  It almost has the Poland Spring water bottle thinness feel to it if you know what I mean.  I'll take some photos tonight when I get home and present them here.

Yeah don't get me wrong.  Bioshock Infinite is a great game worthy of the Bioshock name.  I just find it curious that the game packaging is substandard.  The other complaint is the 'checkpoint' save system and lack of manual saves.  The story and the characters are very appealing as well as the gameplay.

Ok so I finished the game last night and all I can say is that Bioshock Infinite must win best story of the year in videogames.  Unless another game gets released before the end of 2013 Bioshock takes the cake gentlemen.

I would discuss the mind blowing ending here but don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't finished the game yet but suffice it to say, you will not be disappointed.  I will say this though, finish the story and the ending will either leave you frustrated and baffled or blown away at it's revelation.

Would it be as 'mind-blowing', etc. if I were to play it without ever having played Bioshock 1 or 2 or are playing those two essential to understanding the third?

There are no recurring characters so if you have not played 1 and/or 2 you won't feel like you missed something.  The impact of the mind blowing is magnified greatly however if you at least played 1 which was the case with me.  Playing 1 or 2 previously is not a prerequisite though to Infinite and one will still be blown away with the ending.

OK I finally bought the game this last weekend during the sale for $14.  Frankly I would have been disappointed if I'd paid full price.

The story was pretty forced IMO the first 1/2 of the game.  Hey these guys are evil racists for about 6 hours.  I found the Founding Fathers usage pretty forced honestly.  I think the same concept could have been made with a little effort to create a unique background story with a fictional group of founders.  I didn't really like being forced to side against them because there was no alternative, which is why when some asshole was like "I'm not one of them.  I'm a progressive."  I just shot the fucker, because I was tired of being forced through the storyline.  When the Vox finally appeared as a group and the good/bad sides finally blended into to two twisted sick groups the story actually got interesting.  The ending was I must admit pretty fantastic.

The combat was at best decent and honestly got repetitive.   Here's a group of 4 or 5 guys.  Kill them.  Here's another group of 4 or 5 guys.  The last fight and the mother fight were the only challenge in the game.  Frankly the weapon and power choices really didn't make any difference what you used so long as you had ammo and whatever the power juice was called.

Anyway it was a decent game, but no way did it deserve a 100 that many reviewers gave it on metacritic.  A solid 80 IMHO.  Well in the end I finished it in about 12 hours and I'm glad I did because the last 10 minutes or so were really great, but I doubt I'll play it again.  It just wasn't that good I'd want to endure the mundane fights and I already know how it ends so there's no surprises left to be had.

Heh.  I know right?

Honestly I think if the weapon and power choice actually mattered and the combat was more varied and challenging; I'd have loved it more.  The story itself evolved enough to be interesting, but seriously you knew every new room or road you enter would have 4 or 5 poorly performing AI enemies that you could just as easily kill with a pistol, machine gun, shot gun at any range.
