Title: Boston Marathon Bombing Thread

Figured we'd better start one. Someone's ass always needs kicking, doesn't it?

Terrible 2 people have lost their lives, plus reporting loss of limbs among survivors. Whoever did this should expect no mercy and I expect an eye for an eye retribution, that is all arseholes like this will understand.

Was working at the office North of Boston so wasn't caught up in any of it.  My wife is an anaesthesiologist at Mass Gen Hosp and luckily today was her assigned day off.  The hospital so far has not issued a mass casualty event which would necessitate her going in but they have put the hospital on lock down which means that all the medical staff currently at the hospital there will have to stay until the situation is organized.  Due to the large event that was taking place they would already have had additional capacity in terms of medical people covering extra shifts than you would see on a normal routine Monday.

She told me that tomorrow is actually going to be the worst day as right now it will be the very critical who get attention but tomorrow all those with lacerations and injuries that are not life threatening will be requiring surgery.  Probably means that she will be working 12+ hours tomorrow and that they will be calling in all the ancillary support staff that they can get to help as well (it take a large team to do surgery, X-Ray, labs, scrub techs, circulating nurses, calibration techs, specialist surgeons etc).

A real shitty way for Boston to make the news we can only be thankful that with so many people in the immediate area that the casualties were not even higher.

Hey guys,

I live in downtown Boston but thankfully the other side of it. The city is a mess now. I hear helicopters and sirens pretty much constantly. They're shutting down exits on the mass pike which is the main artery out west of the city - just drove past them on the way to pick up my wife because public trans is basically non-functional. The subways are shut down for a lot of the stops so the city is pretty much paralyzed.

I can't get a cell phone call to connect as the lines are totally slammed with people trying to call each other. I don't know the exact site of the explosions but my office is VERY close to the finish line of the marathon. The marathon store that local news said had their windows blown out is less than a block away. I walk by it every day on the the way to work. It's likely my office is closed for at least tomorrow I heard from my CEO.

I had two friends right near the explosions, one saw them, one felt them (concussion only, thankfully) Too close to home...

People seem pretty calm for the time being but I can't help but feel on edge. Just laying low in my apartment waiting for EOD to do their thing...

Unbelievable. I open JD's boston marathon thread, expecting some pictures of one of my most favorite cities, hot linked to this thread which is talking a bombing. Boston and Cambridge are really lovely places. I really liked the walking paths on both sides of the Charles.

This is really rotten news.

Boston is a very international city with students and people from all over the globe working here let alone visiting for the Boston marathon.  Probably too early to jump to any type of conclusion regarding origin of this terrorist activity (remember Oklahoma Bombing etc).  I agree with DeathTouch the city obviously is traumatized but mostly it looks like Bostonians are determined not to let fear and these bastards win.

The cellphone shutoff remains a bit of a mystery. I'm about a mile away from the blast and my cell is working fine. Someone tweeted this so they might have just shut off the towers in back bay (the neighborhood where the finish line is):

My prayers go out to all who have been affected by this. I'm concerned that this could be an opener for more attacks on open-air events that draw substantial crowds in urban areas. It is hard to secure every side street, storefront, and doorway in a city such as Boston.

I heard that the cell service was shut off on purpose as cell signals have been used to trigger bmbs overseas.  The most firm number of dead that I have seen and heard is two, but I've heard as many as twenty six.  And the only other Grog I know who might be in or have family in the area is W8taminute.  I used to have his cell, but now I can't find it.  Anyone seen him around here?

Some of the pictures coming out of this are just horrible. The sides are covered in blood and people young and old with lots of bleeding and open wounds.  Thankfully all the medical staff on hand for the marathon were so close.  I am sure their response saved many lives.

The one shot from up high you can see how covered the sidewalks are in blood.  It sounds like there were ball bearings loaded with the explosives.  It also kind of looks like it might have been directional.

I'm a bit surprised the various OpForces (for want of a better word) haven't tried disparate small-scale bombings of open-air gatherings like this. Not as big-scale symbolic, but would seem far more effective at cranking up and sustaining fear.

Then again, they do use random small-scale bombings like this in other countries. So the more interesting question is, why haven't they bothered to do so in the US? I mean on a continuous frequent attempt (I assume they've tried before on occasion and been foiled, if NCIS is anything like reality. ;) ) That would be hard to stop, and the effort at trying to stop it would be far more costly to us at numerous social levels than it would be for them to get volunteers to martyr themselves into paradise (perhaps with a bit of help from hashish).

I am still concerned that this may be a case of pen-pal jihadism.
Some stateside-residing uckerfay with a need to prove something trolls the wahabiwebs and posts smack-talk until one day he gets an untraceable reply that says "Here is a $5000 visa internet gift card and a PDF on how to make your own claymores. Now have fun, kid!"

That kind of thing can be very hard to trace back to the source and would be a cheap way for well-financed and internet savy off shore AQ cyber-franchisees to cause a lot of fear for very little risk. Multiply that times a few hundred a year and we could have a real crisis of civil-liberties v. public safety on our hands that will make previous issues pale in comparison.

Just sent you a text MetalDog.  We're doing fine.  The little one keeps asking if we're safe and if our house is bulletproof.  Took me a little longer to help her to bed tonight than usual, but you can imagine what is going through an 8 year olds mind.

My wife works at a doctor's office in Arlington and she got to go home early today because the last patient she was supposed to see never made it out of her checkup being done at Mass General.  The patient is fine but Boston was in lockdown mode so she had to cancel her appointment.

My wife's friend finally posted on FB they're ok.. they were there, the did not get injured, they had to walk to Dorchester to get out of the city (Cell Phone's service was shutdown in the city - think they were trying to prevent the ability if possible to detonate more devices).. When they got to Dorchester they rented a U-Haul and rode home..My wife's Brother was also stuck in Boston, without cell phone, but he was ok and not near the blast (was in the vicinity earlier in the day though)..

Makes you wonder how they can have events like this in the future.. unlike a sporting event or concert, tough to impose security on something out in the open like this.

No, I think they do simple asymmetric warfare. They do a small operation at minimal cost that gets the rich countries to divert millions from their economies. It is the only way they can fight. You can't be led around by the nose. Even if the ring hurts.

If all goods from the rest of the world were cut off they would be a simple feudal society. Farmers crow food. Warriors take the food for protection money. Same old middle ages/ feudal Japan. The important thing would be they are not a threat. The downside is companies want to sell more goods.

If they are knocked back to north korea level of economy will the people make changes themselves? They have had a taste of higher quality goods.

Good grief. Until now I was thinking the question of the day was from the genius reporter who asked during the press conference this afternoon "Do you think this is an act of terrorism?"

Lessee...setting off bombs in a major metropolitan area with the idea of causing casualties and fear...let's think about that a moment.  ::)

Who are these reporters? Did they go to school...and I mean grade school?
Title: Re: Boston Marathon Bombing Thread
Post by: bayonetbrant on April 16, 2013, 05:55:52 AM
Don't jump to conclusions about the brainpower of the reporters (a favorite pastime around here, I know) but keep in mind a few things:

1. Those might be sports reporters pressed into duty because they were the only ones there.  Everyone remembers Al Michaels at the '89 World Series as "the man" for how well he handled that situation, but they forget some of the cliche-ridden tripe that other sportswriters turned in about the earthquake because they were the ones on-site when the quake happened.

2.  There are times when reporters will ask what everyone else considers a stupidly-obvious question in an attempt to get an on-the-record answer of a stupidly-obvious statement from a public official.  "Do you think this is an act of terrorism?" sounds like a "no shit" question to you and me, but until you get an answer from a public official, you can't follow up with the public officials about what/how/why on their response efforts or investigations.

3.  "Terrorism" right now, to most Americans, involves a turban or a head-scarf, eyebrows, and a dark complexion.  Why?  We've been fighting a "war on terror" as a label slapped over our "war on islamic extremism" for over 10 years.  If you're in college right now, you've never really known a US without an overseas war, and you've got no clue what "domestic terrorism" - a la OKC - looks like.  Today's 22-year-old college kid was 10 when 9-11 happened, but he was 4 when OKC happened.  Asking if it's "an act of terrorism" is code for "is this a bunch of Middle Eastern fuckwits that we need to bomb the shit out of?"

4.  At some point you have to get a public official on-the-record that it's not a gas main.  It's not a science lab having a bad day.  It's not car with a mis-wired engine or a welding truck with leaky oxygen bottles.  This was intentional and designed to kill, hurt, and maim.  You've absolutely got to get a public official to give you that specific determination.

I had some family members only a couple hundred yards from the blast. No one hurt, fortunately.

Note to bombers:
The last time this much blood was shed on the streets of Boston, those responsible were the most powerful empire on earth, and we thrashed them and sent then packing.  You f&cked with the wrong city.

My prayers go out to all who have been affected by this. I'm concerned that this could be an opener for more attacks on open-air events that draw substantial crowds in urban areas. It is hard to secure every side street, storefront, and doorway in a city such as Boston.

Nobody would want to live like that. It's better to close the borders to the countries that spawn them.

Or perhaps that's one of the enemy goals: immigration being the sincerest form of flattery, emigration to the Great Satan ought to be shut down. How to do that? -- get the Great Satan Itself to shut down immigration from the terrorist's home population.

If they're too busy trying to feed themselves they have a lot less time for mischief.

Fat boy Kim should be filling his pants. Even if his stupid video of burning cities was to impress his own people with his awesomeness, he gave other groups an opening to blame him. It went off on the 101st anniversary of his Grandfathers birth when their country was celebrating.

NYT is saying the method was similar to those used in Iraq. Its probably another middle east thing again.

A great post today from Boston area author R.A. Salvatore.  Here's the conclusion:

"To everyone affected, I'm sending good thoughts. To all who rushed in to help, bravo - you represent the best of human nature, in the face of the worst.

And to anyone reading this, I implore you, do not use this to foster divisiveness. We don't know who did this; angry speculation aimed at "the left" or "the right" or "the Islamists" or any other group, does nothing more than give the bomber a little victory. You see those people lying in blood? You see those people running in to help, disregarding their own safety to try to do some good? Some are Democrats, some are Republicans, some are Christian, some are Jewish, some are Muslim, some are atheist, some are Americans, some are from other countries.

All are...people. Just people. Understand that and those who would commit such acts of terror cannot ever win."

Whoever did it needs to face justice.

I read that pressure cookers were used for the bomb's casing.  The inside of the cooker pot was filled with the explosive, along with nails, ball bearings, etc. for shrapnel; placed inside a duffel/gym bag of some sort.  It was further noted that this style of bomb has been known to be used in places such as: Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India.  We can only assume, as to the profile of the type of group that would use this kind of bomb in those countries.

So either it is the same basic group of individuals, promoting the same basic cause; or it is another group using the same bomb design.

But the bottom-line is that mass murder was committed, and the murder(s) need to face justice... wherever they are hiding.

...from the bomb design, i bet its either:

a single psycho nut-job type, who just has grown to hate all normal people and the society from the guts, who cant stand to see others enjoying 'family&friends fun stuff', cause he has none (those Columbine, Joker-impersonating, amok-type of individual)

or a single, homegrown, self-radicalized over the internet/media, Jihadist... who has no more ties to any official Jihadist-groups or structure then watching their propaganda shit.

he/she sure will be on one of the countless videos/pictures carrying the specific bag(s) around first, and later seen without them.
(so there might be many suspects to check if these specific bag(s) were very common)

I dunno, Mike.

From the reports there were several bombs. They weren't light. I don't see one guy doing this by himself.

I will say they must have some pretty cool software. My guess is that all the images taken by people and sent to the cops will be filtered for people carrying bags and then without them. I'm not sure how I'd even start to program for that kind of logic, but I'd bet a dollar they've got it. We'll catch the bastards soon enough.

I only heard about two real bombs finally, (but i dunno how many kettles in one bag, i thought just one 6 liter kettle? ) in German news, the others reported were the usual media chatter until the first dust has settled, and the authorities had given news-conferences. AFAIK its only one kettle found, and its not known (at least to the public) what 'container' the secound bomb had inside.

For good or ill (good in this case) many public spaces are under camera watch. Between CCTV and folks just taking videos and snapshot there was probably a LOT of photographic evidence just waiting to be found. According to CNN it was a CCTV camera at a local department store that provided the key piece they were looking for.

So, yes, if you don't realize you may be on candid camera in a public place, you are something of an idiot.

QuoteA federal law enforcement source told Fox News that investigators are looking for two men that are persons of interest in Monday's Boston Marathon terror attack and have distributed photos for "law enforcement eyes only."

The FBI is not sharing the photos with the public.

A Fox News reporter has seen the photos and called them "clear."

According to the reporter, one of the men has a backpack that appears to match the bag believed to have been used in the attack. The other man also appears to have a bag of some kind.

The source asked that the images not be made public for fear of jeopardizing the investigation.

News of the images came as investigators spent Wednesday poring over photos and video footage and piecing together shredded remnants of bombs in an effort to zero in on suspects behind the attack.

Unless there's a particular target they simply want eliminated. Are there any suggestions of a target?  ???

Probably wrong here, but think that many of the Nihilists in the early 20th century believed they would have a lengthy struggle.  They kept their names out of the news because they desired the downfall of the existing political structures.  Keeping it secret made it harder for the security and secret police, and contributed to the atmosphere of paranoia that supposedly fostered their goals.

I wonder if the bomber is one of the many severely wounded and is somewhat out of it right now. With that in mind, I'm fairly certain that all the victims are probably getting a visit from the FBI photographers.

Here's the one that really got to me.  The Bruins game just after the attack at the "Gahd'n"  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KXHN-ETDig

If this version of the National Anthem doesn't bring a tear to your eye, nothing will.

I heard that anthem played three times on ESPN this morning.  I teared up each time.  Hearing that makes me wonder why people take us on.

I honest to God thought this article must be a parody when I clicked on it....but it's not. This dirtbag makes the assertion that he hopes the bombers are white Americans, because if they are Muslim or middle eastern, why....we will play on that stereotype and portray them as terrorists!

Some folks....some folks, it should be legal to beat some sense into them, or at least beat them because they're so frickin' stupid. Or just beat them because it's good therapy. I hope the Hells Angels move next door to this dude and take a special interest in him.

What happened in Boston is a tragedy and an insult, period.  Find the bad guys and off them.  That's all that needs to be done.  There is no need to talk about stereotypes or finger pointing at any group or groups.  Just find the bad guys and punish them.

Not sure what exactly is going on, but Twitter is lighting up big time with talk of a police shootout in Watertown, Mass. There's talk of potential bombs, but everyone is so freaked out right now that who the Hell knows. There definitely IS some sort of shootout happening, though.

And apparently a cop was gunned down at MIT earlier this evening.

Good grief.  :(

EDIT : Okay, it sounds like 2 guys engaged in a shootout with police somewhere in or around MIT. One cop was killed. The same two guys then stole a car and were somehow stopped around Watertown, where a second battle occurred. We're talking hand grenades, armored vehicles, the works. Both are now apparently in custody, and one may be dead.

NOW there's talk that the bomb squad has been called to a hospital.

And now it seems one guy is still loose. Here's hoping they catch him quick.

No idea at this point if there's a connection to the Marathon bombing or not.

Okay, the NY Times has a pretty good early entry on this. Scary, scary stuff (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/20/us/explosives-detonated-in-massachusetts-standoff.html?hp&_r=1&).

QuoteTwo young men, armed with guns and explosives in what appeared to be backpacks, engaged in a violent standoff with dozens of police on a street in Watertown, Mass., Thursday night, a resident said.

Andrew Kitzenburg, 29, said he looked out of this third floor window to see two young men of slight build in jackets shooting at dozens of police officers from behind a black Mercedes SUV. The officers and the men were 70 yards apart, he said, and engaged in "constant gunfire."

A police SUV "drove towards the shooters," he said, and was shot at until it was severely damaged. It rolled out of control, Mr. Kitzenberg said, and crashed into two cars in his driveway.

The two shooters, he said, had a large and unwieldy bomb. "They lit it, still in the middle of the gunfire, and threw it. But it went 20 yards at most." It exploded, he said, and one of the two men ran towards the gathered police officers. He was tackled, but it was not clear if he was shot, Mr. Kitzenberg said.

The other, he said, got back into the SUV, turned it towards officers and "put the pedal to the metal." The car "went right through the cops, broke right through and continued west."

The two men left "a few backpacks right by the car, and there is a bomb robot out there now." Police had told residents to stay away from their windows, he said.

The standoff came within hours of an incident at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, located across the Charles River from Watertown, in which a campus police officer was shot and killed.

The officer, who was not named, responded to a report of a disturbance near Vassar and Main Streets, the Middlesex County District Attorney Michael Pelgro said in a statement early Friday. He was found, the statement said with "multiple gunshot wounds" and taken to Massachusetts General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

M.I.T. said in an update on its campus alert Web site after midnight that the "shooter remains at large, police continue to search the campus," and asked students to stay indoors until further notice.

At the campus, helicopters whirred overhead, and police cars were dotted through the streets. A crime scene was cordoned off, and at least one dog unit was on the scene.

The two incidents came as the area was already on edge following the bombings at the Boston Marathon on Monday.

Yep. The dead brother (Black Hat) had both gunshot wounds and blast burns. He also had explosives on him so the worry with White Hat (a most unfitting moniker if ever there was one) is that he may have a suicide vest as well as some kind of semi-auto rifle.

A third 'person of interest' has been taken into custody, after first being stripped down to clear him for explosives.

Unless there is clear evidence of who might have given support to these uckerfays it will be hard to retaliate. Chechnya is not exactly a foreign power but a rebellious Russian republic.

I've had the same thoughts on all counts.

Honestly, I did not expect Chechens... even after watching "Act of Valor".  I figured that they'd be too busy with Russia.  Truthfully, there is no mistake that any radicalized Muslims are a potential threat.

This morning, the wife and I were discussing the morning's events in Boston over breakfast.  I have to interject by tell you all that Atlantic Canadians (generally) feel a strong affiliation with "the Boston States" (basically meaning Maine, NH, and Mass.).  Many an Atlantic Canadian has close relatives in Boston; we've got Bruins, Bo-Sox, and Pats fans galore; all of our US network channels are Boston channels; and every year Nova Scotia sends a big-assed Christmas tree to the City of Boston to thank them for the aid that was given after the Halifax Explosion.  Truthfully, Atlantic Canadians are as aligned with New Englanders as anyone.

Anyway, so the wife and I are talking over breakfast and she says "When will they stop letting foreigners come here to go to school?  The 9/11 bombers were students, now these guys are students!  It's too risky to let them in!"  I chuckled and said "Sweetie, we're foreigners too!"  ::)

Kinda.  Democrats push for making it as easy as possible to register to vote.  They think having to have a legal photo ID or actually being a citizen disenfranchises people who want to vote (even if they can't legally vote).  Democrats are the ones who don't want to secure the borders.  Democrats are the ones who want illegal immigrant amnesty.  Democrats are the ones who want to extend a trusted traveler program to Saudi Arabia, etc.

A new report says that the older brother didn't just get to the US but has been here a number of years and has even been interviewed a while back by a news outlet on an unrelated matter (possibly amateur boxing?).

As an aside, the more I hear about yet another part of Greater Boston getting locked down by the search for one armed man the more uneasy I get about what this portends for the future of both public safety and civil liberties in this country. I completely understand why this is needed right now. What I worry about is how an expectation of similar measures in the future be manipulated toward a more sinister outcome by either terrorist (domestic or foreign) or individuals/groups within the government/information technologies industry 'partnership'. There is a movable baseline on the freedom/safety scale that could now be more readily manipulated by media/government/industry for self-gain. This event could also usher in a new paradigm for those individuals or groups who desire to create unprecedented media coverage of whatever brutality their mass socialization defects allow them to justify committing against the public.

It's a good bet they had help.

Their method of bomb making is too similar to what's being made in the sandboxes for it to be a coincidence. If they'd looked it up online they would have been tracked and ID'd.

Therefore, my money is on them getting the info from someone via word of mouth.

They had help.

Also, listening to the TV, they seemed to get radicalized about two years ago.

All of that suggests there is more to this than just two brothers.
Title: Re: Boston Marathon Bombing Thread
Post by: Staggerwing on April 19, 2013, 10:31:06 AM
The brothers have been here for a decade or so it appears. It's also been reported that they drove nice cars so perhaps they didn't need to have outside financial help, diverting some of the college allowance money instead. I'm curious to find out what kind of long guns they had and how they obtained them. MA requires registration of all guns, iirc.

AFA radicalized goes, I'm going to guess that the older one was the one who first started to plan evil. He had expressed some bitterness in that earlier interview about not being accepted and not making any friends. He was also arrested for assault against a girl a few years back. His brother was supposed to be well known and popular, had a current well to do girlfriend, and was very socially outgoing. He probably looked up to his  much older brother and thus felt a strong urge to get involved with whatever his brother was promoting.

None of this is any excuse of course. He made an evil choice and must pay the full consequences.

This is a rather odd article.

In it the bombers indicate they don't have any American friends (although they grew up here). Further the father seems to think his kids are "angels" - when they clearly are not.

Then he goes so far as to make a threat if the kids are harmed.

Clearly there is a disconnect between what what he's saying. I'm going to take a wild guess that the dad might be involved in this, too.

Yeah, I heard a comment from a news anchor about that. He wondered aloud as to how many of the good folk there might be wishing they had a firearm to protect themselves with a madman on the loose.

All I can say is that if a bad guy tried to break in under those circumstances here they'd be met with the business end of gunpowder and lead.

Just checked my local news website and can't seem to find the text of the conversation they had with the uncle.

Maybe this?

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/04/19/turn-yourself-in-and-ask-forgiveness-angry-uncle-bombing-suspect-demands/

Quote"I say Dzhokhar, if you're alive, turn yourself in and ask for forgiveness from the victims, from the injured," a visibly angry Tsarni said, adding that he would have alerted authorities if he knew of his nephews' alleged plan.

"I respect this country, I love this country," he continued. "[The bombing] has nothing to do with Chechnya ... He put a shame on our family, he put a shame on the entire Chechnyan ethnicity."

Chechnya is well known for brutal and well trained Islamic extremists.   They were on the battlefield in Iraq and are in Afghanistan.   They've committed some hyenious crimes in Chechnya, Russia, and else where.   It might behoove some here to check their agenda attitudes at the door instead of posting their internal bullshit here just to be a smart ass especially given the circumstances surrounding this terror attack.

At the end of the day, is what their agenda was really that important?  If investigations lead to evidence of a larger network, great.  Hopefully if there are any more bad guys, they can can be rolled up.  It's not like the actions of these criminals will further their cause though. (Unless their cause was to increase the police state).

What's far more worrying to me is what effect this will have on our already denuded civil liberties in the name of public safety.

Sadly one doesn't need to go outside of our borders to recruit anymore.

Look what one fundamentalist asshole was able to organize from within Canada.  And why haven't we found the guy responsible for recruiting these kids in the first place?

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/story/2013/04/18/pol-weston-algeria-gas-plant-attack-mauratania.html (http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/story/2013/04/18/pol-weston-algeria-gas-plant-attack-mauratania.html)

Quote
Canadian arrested prior to Algeria attack

CBC News has learned that Ali Medlej, one of the two former London, Ont., high school friends linked to al-Qaeda and killed during an attack on an Algerian refinery three months ago, had been arrested a year before the bloody gas plant siege but was later released.

It is a twist of fate that could have kept him from the attack — and his own death.

Indeed, a third high school friend arrested around the same time as Medlej and not released, is still alive in jail in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.

Sources tell CBC News that Medlej was one of 36 people arrested by Mauritanian authorities in late 2011 during a broad round-up of suspected al-Qaeda extremists in the North African nation.

Barely four years out of high school at the time, Medlej was held and interrogated for about 40 days, and then simply released into the deserts of Mauritania.

Ordinarily, Canada's diplomats in the region would have intervened on behalf of one of their own citizens arrested with a Canadian passport and a student visa.

Canadian officials not told of arrest

But sources tell CBC News that no one told Canadian officials there about Medlej's arrest and detention — not Ali Medlej, not his family, not Mauritanian officials.

By the time they found out, it was too late – Medlej had slipped away on route to his murderous mission at the Algerian refinery in January this year.

Police and intelligence sources say it is likely that Medlej and high school pal Xris Katsiroubas blew themselves up in a suicide finale to the four-day gas plant siege by the two Canadians and 30 other militants linked to al-Qaeda.

Both were under 25 when they died.

A third former high school classmate, Aaron Yoon, was arrested in the same al-Qaeda sweep that nabbed Medlej in Mauritania.

But unlike his pal, Yoon was not released, instead sentenced in 2012 to two years in jail allegedly for having ties to a terrorist group and posing a danger to the national security of Mauritania.

There is no evidence Yoon ever planned to participate in the Algerian refinery attack, even if he had not be incarcerated, and he has denied any involvement in terrorist activities.

Fourth high school friend missing

A fourth member of the group of London school chums, Ryan Enderi, is missing.

The arrest and release of Medlej more than a year before the refinery attack is only the latest twist in this bizarre story of the four friends from London South Secondary School who left their comfortable suburban neighbourhoods and backyard swimming pools for the sands of North Africa.

It is also a story that continues to raise many disturbing questions amid an increasingly deafening silence from Canadian officials.

First and foremost, did someone drop the ball?

CBC News has confirmed that CSIS interviewed friends, family and other associates of several of the boys as far back as 2007 after the parents of one of the then high school teenagers called the police.

Sometime later, CSIS investigators apparently became sufficiently concerned about what the boys were up to that the intelligence service called in the RCMP to conduct a criminal investigation.

CBC News has also confirmed the RCMP were interviewing former acquaintances of the four in June 2012.

But that's more than a year after all four had left the country, and only months before the gas refinery attack.

Was it all a bungled surveillance and investigation by the RCMP or CSIS – or both?

Or is it an alarming fact of religious radicalization that police had no grounds to intervene until it was too late?

And who's to blame for radicalizing the boys?

London resident believed responsible for radicalization

Informed sources have told CBC News that investigators now believe one person in the London area was largely responsible for turning the four teenagers – including a Greek Orthodox and a Korean Catholic – into Islamic radicals, at least two of whom who were prepared to trade their high-school T-shirts for suicide bomb vests.

Who is he and why haven't the police arrested him? Or did they lose track of him, too?

Finally, parents everywhere must be wondering what law enforcement and other government agencies are doing to help ensure no one turns their own kids into would-be terrorists.

So far, the RCMP has said only that their investigation is continuing, and they are asking the public for information on the London four.

You really have no idea about what is socially appropriate do you? Let me spell it out.

For a lot of people something like a marathon would be a lifetime achievement. They would train for months trying to improve themselves. Public events like this are a celebration of life.

In this case that has been destroyed for many people, beyond those that were injured or killed. It is not a joking matter. It is not a time to try to be the center of attention.

Quit being lame.

The Chechens have been responsible for a serious terrorist threat to Russia for some years.  There have been some high profile bombings
including some that were probably the Russian government or organised crime but were blamed on them.
Then there was that long and costly war against Chechen nationals.  Chechnaya has been a source of trouble for Russia and now
some people apparently from there appear to have attacked the US.  This is a part of this thread, scolders and there is no sarcasm or political baiting
intended whatsoever.

House to house search continues. The number of IED's that have been either disarmed or detonated by authorities now apparently stands at 7. K9 units are starting to run low simply because the dogs are worn out. Police are now asking residents to stop tweeting specific addresses and the like, since the suspect is probably following all of this on a smart phone. They've taken down at least 4 people thus far in the past couple of hours, but none of them turned out to be the guy. It's almost weird hearing how calm the cops are over the scanner about everything. Hell, it's scary when they DO start to freak out a bit.

Also, I've read that these guys are from Kyrgyzstan? Sounds like they spent more time there than they ever did in Chechnya.

Not sure what the distance is from Watertown to Belmont, but they're now dispatching someone to a park there to investigate a suspicious package. Could just be paranoia (which is somewhat reasonable under the circumstances) making people see things. Or this thing just got bigger.

Okay, it looks like Belmont is just north of Watertown. Hopefully it's a false alarm.

He's cornered in a boat in someone's backyard. I guess he was under the tarp, but they found him with thermal imaging. There was a bit of a firefight, and they kept him disoriented and pinned with flashbangs until he was scene was surrounded.

They're staying back and bringing in a negotiator now. EOD robots moving up to see if he's wearing a bomb vest. And they're lighting the scene up big time with floodlights and helos. Clearly they want him alive or that boat would be splinters by now.

Oh man...another black bag spotted in Watertown. Maybe two. EOD being brought in again.

In a 'would be funny if it wasn't depressing', the Czech Ambassador had to issue a statement (http://www.mzv.cz/washington/en/czech_u_s_relations/news/statement_of_the_ambassador_of_the_czech.html) explaining that the Czech Republic is not Chechnya.

QuoteAs many I was deeply shocked by the tragedy that occurred in Boston earlier this month. It was a stark reminder of the fact that any of us could be a victim of senseless violence anywhere at any moment.

As more information on the origin of the alleged perpetrators is coming to light, I am concerned to note in the social media a most unfortunate misunderstanding in this respect. The Czech Republic and Chechnya are two very different entities - the Czech Republic is a Central European country; Chechnya is a part of the Russian Federation.

As the President of the Czech Republic Miloš Zeman noted in his message to President Obama, the Czech Republic is an active and reliable partner of the United States in the fight against terrorism. We are determined to stand side by side with our allies in this respect, there is no doubt about that.

In all likelihood he'll be charged with a Federal crime, which will carry the death penalty.

In exchange for his life, he'll have to sing like a bird.

It would be nice to see him charged as an enemy combatant and sent to Gitmo, but I doubt this administration has the balls to do that. There is also the minor detail of him now being a US citizen. It's likely he qualifies as an enemy combatant despite his citizenship, but I don't have much hope.

"The FBI interviewed Tamerlan Tsarnaev in 2011 after a request from a foreign government, US law enforcements officials have confirmed. But agents closed the case after finding no cause for concern.
In an interview on Russian television, the mother of the two suspects said the FBI was in contact with her son for several years.
It is not known which country made the request, but the BBC's Paul Adams in Washington says it is likely to have come from the Russians.

Interesting, the Russians warned about them. Maybe they had more info that they had to keep?

Unfortunately (and I hope board members don't hold this against me), I was unable to contribute as most of my discretionary funds are already committed to helping the son of the Minister of the Interior of Nigeria free his imprisoned father from a corrupt regime.

Jack, good call. At least you know the Nigerian thing is for real and not a scam. I know my spam email account has been flooded with email stating that a "video link to the Boston explosion" was enclosed or words to that effect. The spammers, scammers and slime never miss an opportunity, do they?

How is it that my hard drive can be scanned for ten years despite the fact that I've done nothing worse than get a traffic ticket, yet these guys can attend a radical mosque, travel to Chechnya, upload insane videos, get interviewed by the FBI...and we still can't figure out they're bad guys?

Your hard drive will spin for a prolonged period of time. Shut down all programs. Check to see if AV is scanning.

That's a good indicator...especially when correlated to a post about current events you just made or something on breaking news.

My hdd spun up at least half a dozen times on Friday alone. It would be comical if it weren't so obviously off base.

I didn't read all 16 pages of this thread so my apologies if this was addressed already, but I've been curious as to how these bombs were detonated.  Since they were in a $140 pressure cooker, I assume the normal operation of that appliance is what triggers the explosives inside.  If that's the case, how were these things powered out in the street?

Simple mechanical timers such as egg-timers are also apparently easy to use to close a circuit, as are Garage Door opener components, digital watches, and a number of other things. Even one of those light on/off plugs one used when leaving the house for a vacation could probably be adapted as well. You can now get digital versions of those that are precise down to a second or two.

One would be surprised at the common items used in IED construction.

The one issue surrounding this whole thing that really bothers me is the "media" speculation about who/why in the 48 hours following the attack.  It's a disgusting agenda driven media and I'll leave it at that.

Title: Re: Boston Marathon Bombing Thread

So I'm still confused - what was the pressure cooker needed for if the explosives weren't set off by being pressurized?  They could of packed the bomb components in a $5 steel pot instead of a $140 brand new pressure cooker, right?

Also, if they were detonated with a radio- like an RC car radio- has any witnesses come forward to say that some guy was close to the explosion and had a radio remote?  I mean, they have an antenna with not a lot of range so I would think that would of been very consipicious and observed by *somebody* with all those people that were present.
Title: Re: Boston Marathon Bombing Thread
Post by: Staggerwing on April 21, 2013, 03:37:29 PM
The pressure cooker 'holds' the expanding gas from burning black-powder (an inefficient explosive, so to speak) for a fraction of a second longer so that the resulting explosion has much more force and can project the shrapnel (BBs, scrap metal, nails, what not) at a much greater velocity outward. This is a way to use slower burning propellants in place of things like TNT or C4 which burn so fast that they don't require a 'hold back' unless they are being used as a shaped charge. Even then, the direction of the burn through the material does more to aim the blast than any physical channeling.

Black powder is easier to buy w/out attracting attention than higher grade explosives, which are used industrially and tracked.

Title: Re: Boston Marathon Bombing Thread

If it was really black powder then it's no surprise the blast was so weak. Great stuff if you're looking to carry a flintlock around the farm for a Saturday. But it's rather weak compared to modern smokeless powders.

More than anything, that choice saved a lot of lives.

And then there is this...

QuoteInvestigators in a Boston suburb are looking into possible links between a suspect in last week's Boston Marathon bombing and an unsolved 2011 triple murder.

Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was pronounced dead early Friday after a shootout with police, was a friend of one of three men found dead in an apartment in Waltham on Sept. 12, 2011, their necks slit and their bodies reportedly covered with marijuana.

Tsarnaev and his murdered friend, Brendan Mess, were both boxers.

Middlesex County District Attorney's Office spokeswoman MaryBeth Long said authorities are checking for any possible connection beteen Tsarnaev and the murders.

"We continue to follow all leads and will review any new information that may come to light in that case as a result of the investigation of bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev," Long said.

John Allan, owner of Wai Kru Mixed Martial Arts in Allston, told the Boston Globe that he had introduced Tsarnaev to Mess back in 2011. Allan described Tsarnaev as the "best boxer in Boston" but said he hadn't been back to the Wai Kru Mixed Martial Arts center in years -- at least not until this month, the Globe reported.

While Allan was on a trip to Thailand, he received an email from employees saying that Tsarnaev had showed up to the gym and had acted rude to other gym-goers. Allan said the incident was a sign that "something was up."

Interesting.

I'm curious to know what his wife has to say. I'd bet a dollar she wasn't in the dark.

The mother was busted for shop lifting like $1500 from the Lords and Taylor store (the video to catch these clowns came from that same store) last year.  Good upstanding family to be sure.

Thankfully none of them was very good at their misdeeds.

I've also heard that the older brother is now being reviewed for a possible triple homicide - of his best friend and two others. Possible motive is a dope deal gone bad or something.

Earlier today, I got in the car to drop my wife off and she had the radio turned to the stupid Diane Rehm show, which I hate with a passion. Moments into the drive, a caller was lamenting how our attitudes and lack of understanding of other cultures leads to things like what happened in Boston. Of course, the comment went unchallenged by Rehm or her guest, another apologist suck-up "isn't America awful" moron. Man, I lost it! I slammed off the radio and went into a loud rant that left my wife open-mouthed. I'm pretty sure NPR won't be playing next time I drive with her.

Damn....I mean, these folks came to America to build a better life, and somehow it's always our fault when they blow us up. I think, given the chance, I could have buried that caller up to her liberal-babbling neck in dirt and beat her about the head with the shovel. And I'm usually in such a good mood.....

Yeah, I read an article earlier....which of course, I can't find now....that painted the parents as having their heads in the sand for years regarding their oldest son. He went from zero to radical in no time at all, alienating friends and family members....except for his parents and siblings, who turned a blind eye towards the changes in him. I'm sure this will all be analyzed to death before it's all said and done. I'm glad that they captured the kid alive so at least some questions may be answered in time.

Kitzenberg had also taken photos with his iPhone from the bedroom window on the third floor of his Watertown, Mass., home, where he witnessed the violent scene. The images of his eyewitness account, which are going viral, are blurry, scary and surreal.

This is kind of cool to see.

QuoteDuring Friday's intense manhunt for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in Watertown, Mass., when the city of Boston was on lockdown, a Brookline police officer delivered milk to a family with a baby.

And like many random acts of kindness seen in the wake the marathon bombings, the photo—posted to Facebook by the family—went viral, thanks in part to a tweet from the Boston Police Department:

BPD Officer delivers milk to a family with young children in Watertown during the lockdown.

Kevin Wells, the father, took the photo of the officer, John Bradley, as he arrived carrying two gallons of milk for Holden, Wells' 17-month-old son.

During the lockdown, the boy's grandmother, who was visiting from Colorado, left the house to ask the officer if he could grab some milk for the young couple.

"It just meant the world that he literally went out and got two gallons of milk," McKenzie Wells, the boy's mother, told Today.com. "We wanted to pay him, but he wouldn't take money from us. He was just so generous."

Amazing service yesterday For Sean Collier.  About 10,000 cops attended it.  Yes, that's the correct number of zeroes.  One of our guys was coming to work (he lives in NH) and was passed by an endless stream of cruisers from pretty much every town in Maine.

It was only after some friends in the local game industry tweeted about it that I realized I'd actually met Collier at MIT last year when he was assigned to the Festival of Indie Games event last September.  Just spoke to him for a couple minutes, but he seemed like a really decent guy.

Now this is coming out

QuoteThe Boston Marathon bombing suspects had Times Square in their sights before law enforcement authorities put an end to their bloody terror spree, according New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

"New York was next on their list of targets," Bloomberg said of brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Bloomberg said he received confirmation of the chilling second phase of their plot from the FBI. "The fact is, New York City remains a prime target for those who hate America and want to kill Americans."

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the brothers, Muslims from Dagestan, a breakaway republic in Russia, hatched their plot to attack Times Square while driving the streets of Cambridge last Thursday in a Mercedes SUV they had carjacked from a man who later escaped. Kelly called the New York plot "spontaneous," and said they had six bombs with them in the car, some of which they hurled at police cars hours later when they were being pursued in a chase that culminated in Tamerlan Tsarnaev's death.

One of the bombs the brothers had in the stolen car was a pressure cooker bomb, identical to one used in the marathon attack, and packed with gunpowder and shrapnel, Kelly said. Both Kelly and Bloomberg noted surveillance cameras, a contentious subject in New York, played a key role in solving the bombing in Boston, Bloomberg's hometown. Still, the mayor said there was no way of knowing if the brothers could have pulled off a second attack in America's largest city.

This was on boston.com today.  An account of the carjacked driver and how he escaped.  Pretty ballsy move on his part, but, hey, he knew they would kill him at some point.  The only reason they didn't right away was probably that they didn't want the cops to know what car they had if a body was found.

Their mom is now increasingly looking like a suspect.

I'm still waiting to hear about his wife.

QuoteThe mother of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects is a "person of interest" to federal authorities seeking to learn who radicalized one or both of her sons, according to lawmakers, and a separate report said she was on a federal terrorism database some 18 months before the attack.

The noose around that guy's wife just got a bit tighter.

QuoteFemale DNA was found on bomb components used in the attack this month on the Boston Marathon, a source familiar with the investigation confirmed to Fox News, though the source cautioned that it is too early to draw hard conclusions from that evidence.

It could be from a victim, but I'm going to guess they're going to let this news sink in for a while before they do anything with her. However, expect a warrant requesting her DNA at some point in the near future.

I don't think so.

However, there is a lot of speculation about how should couldn't have been aware of her husband's activities.

Saw on the news last night that the older brother's ex-girlfriend has come forward and claimed he ranted to her about his hatred of Americans. The reasoning goes that if he was telling that to his girlfriend, the girl he married probably heard it, too.

She's in a world of hurt - the hammer hasn't dropped on her just yet, but it's coming.

I'm not sure about them being separated. It's my understanding that the evening of the bombing he was babysitting their child as she went off to work.

Positioning these guys a "Islamic Terrorists" the way the story does is, IMO, giving them too much credit.  At least, they don't fit the profile.  The younger brother was a kind of a weak minded nebbish pothead whose motivations aren't yet clear, but it doesn't seem like he spent a lot of time being very religious in any way.  The older brother seems to be the bad seed here, but so far (and I emphasize "so far") there is no evidence that, while radicalized, this dude was part of some kind of cell.  He was a punk who was a failure in pretty much everything he'd done, and blamed "Americans" for it.  The Mother is clearly in need of a tinfoil hat.  I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

The suggestion that people "wanted it to be some right wing group of tea-partiers" is pure polemic.  What people?  Mass is a pretty liberal place, but I saw not a single word on the news or in the media here to suggest anyone was "hoping" the perpetrators would be anything in particular, or some kind of right wing group.  So far no organization has come forward saying they were behind these two.

I found the article to be pretty tasteless, to be honest.  Someone using the tragedy to promote his own agenda.

I posted this article earlier in the thread http://www.salon.com/2013/04/16/lets_hope_the_boston_marathon_bomber_is_a_white_american/ (http://www.salon.com/2013/04/16/lets_hope_the_boston_marathon_bomber_is_a_white_american/)
so yes...some people were indeed hoping that the bombers were white, right wingers. Maybe not your local media, which is good, but Salon isn't exactly some small magazine with no readership. Tasteless? The Salon article is tasteless, and it's saying exactly what you say isn't being said.

If you read all of the "Swat Nation" article, much of it was devoted to the police response, which has been discussed on this site as well and concerns many of us. How do we protect ourselves from attacks like this without surrendering our rights and simply living our lives as shut-ins?  9/11 brought us the TSA, Homeland Security, police departments which outgun most National Guard units and drones sharing our airspace. Are we all comfortable with this? As far as someone using a tragedy to promote their own agenda, I would direct you to look no further than the Newtown shootings and President Obama's sudden interest in passing gun control legislation, which is supported by many of the same media outlets we are discussing here.

Sometimes when bad things happen, we need to not only look at how they happened, but at our response as a society. It's a valid question that deserves consideration.

If you weren't already irate over this whole incident this will just make it worse.

QuoteThe accused Boston Marathon bombers' family pulled in more than $100,000 in welfare up until 2012, The Boston Herald reported.

The benefits included food stamps, Section 8 housing and stipends, the report said. One person with knowledge of the documents that will be handed over to the House Post Audit and Oversight Committee told the paper, "the breadth of the benefits the family was receiving was stunning."

Massachusetts' Executive Office of Health and Human Services said earlier that Tamerlan Tsarnaev's welfare benefits ended in 2012 when his family stopped meeting income eligibility limits. His wife's attorney claimed Katherine -- who had converted to Islam -- was working up to 80 hours a week as a home health aide while Tsarnaev stayed at home, the newspaper reported.

Seriously, this is too good of an article on the subject to pass up:

http://pjmedia.com/rogerkimball/2013/04/25/swat-nation/ (http://pjmedia.com/rogerkimball/2013/04/25/swat-nation/)

Chris--

You're right, I should have followed the links he posted and read the articles.  And yeah, that Salon article is pretty tasteless as well.  I was referring to the local media here when I said I hadn't heard that viewpoint.

Regarding the police response, the people in charge were keenly aware of what the overwhelming police presence looked like to the folks in the neighborhood.  Their goal was to get out of there as soon as possible.  So, kind of the opposite of martial law.  Events were happening pretty fast that day.  LE will no doubt be reviewing their response, but I think the overall tone here in Boston was that they acted pretty appropriately.

We're veering into politics here which I'd rather not do, so I will refrain from commenting further.

I think the reports coming out pretty well establish that the older brother was suspected of being involved with potential islamic terrorist groups.  Whether those ties are interpersonal, internet, or whatnot remains to be determined.  However you don't end up on both the Russian and Saudi watch lists because you're hanging out at home being self indocrinated.  There is a link that raised the flag from the Russians and Saudis and was looked at, however briefly or seriously by the FBI, the question is whether or not the facts will be silenced for fear of political correctness reprecussions.  There have been several other instances of the fear of PC reprecussions too.  Namely the Fort Hood shooter.

Makes me wonder how often a foreign nation reports a suspected terrorist?  I mean if both the Russians and Saudis pointed to the same guy (who isn't even a citizen), wouldn't that be enough to bounce him out of the country and/or watch him closely??!!

Then again, if there are 100 people being pin-pointed every month, then I can imagine that there are not enough resources to bounce/watch them all, and some sort of assessment/triage is done to determine who deserves the most attention.

Looks like 3 more suspects were taken into custody.

QuoteThree additional suspects were taken into custody in the Boston Marathon bombing case, the Boston Police Department tells FoxNews.com.

Police would not confirm when the suspects were taken into custody, and referred further questions to the FBI.

Prior to the latest development, authorities had named only brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev as suspects in the April 15 bombing at the finish line of the world famous race.

Two of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's former UMass-Dartmouth classmates, Dias Kadyrbayev and Azamat Tazhayakov, are from Kazakhstan and faced an immigration hearing this morning, sources said. Sources told Fox News they face obstruction charges in connection with the bombing. The identity of the third suspect is unclear.

Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov are suspected of taking computers and other equipment from Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's apartment and trying to dispose of it after the bombings, sources told Fox News.

Kadyrbayev's attorney Robert Stahl says his client will be transported to the federal courthouse later Wednesday to appear on new criminal charges. On Friday, Yerlan Kubashev with the Consulate General for Kazakhstan in New York confirmed in a statement to Fox News that the consulate is helping the young men with legal representation.

Kubashev said the two men are "shocked at the bombings," and "they express sorrow to the bombing victims and their families."

Police did not confirm the gender of the third suspect, but Fox News confirmed the person is a U.S. citizen. More information was expected to be provided by the US Attorney's office later Wednesday.

It doesn't help that the pool of resources gets further diluted by claiming veterans and tea partiers are potential threats when they clearly are not.

You have to pick your battles. Deliberately picking the wrong ones due to political correctness is going to result in missing real leads.

I don't care if some pothead wants to drive around with a funky license plate.

However, there are starting to be so many dropped balls and red flags on this case that I'm losing track.

Russia sends us a warning that the ringleader might be a bad guy. We clear him. He flies to Chechnya and goes to one of the hottest regions for training. We miss that. He comes back and uploads YouTube vids of his radicalism. We miss that. He hangs around with friends from other potentially dangerous areas of Russia. We miss that. Two of those potentially dangerous people drive around with a license plate that says "Terrorista #1" and attend a mosque known to have radicals in it. We miss that.

At some point we have to ask ourselves why we're spending billions of dollars and suspending all these civil liberties if we can't get basic tradecraft accomplished.

It isn't the sexy tech that is dropping to ball, it's basic brainwork and common sense that is needed.

One question I have is how that information is compartmentalized.  If it's 12 different agencies, each with 1 piece of the puzzle, and sharing no information with each other, then it's no wonder the bigger picture isn't recognized.  Even if it's 4 agencies, each with 2 pieces of the puzzle, and a willingness to share, if the FBI has 4 things on Suspect A and 5 things on Suspect B and 2 things on Tsarnaev, I don't fault them for shopping around for info on A & B first.
Moreover, we don't know if focusing on A & B first actually stopped some other significant plot elsewhere because of the focus on guys with more indicators, or if they were merely distractions from a puzzle that was more spread out.

Now, if it turns out that all this information was in the same agency, in the same corner of the office, and either (a) didn't get properly prioritized, or (b) was bumped down because of other pressing needs and therefore not investigated b/c of a lack of manpower, then there are other issues to address.

But as it is, just from the excerpt above, what seems like an open-and-shut case of gov't slackitude may not be quite so obvious.

Of course that could happen.  But I'd rather someone innocent get a 2nd, 3rd and 4th look if it keeps some dickhead like bomber #1 getting let loose to be able to engage in mass murder.

Furthermore (and I'm not saying that you, or anyone else feels exactly this way), I don't assume that everyone who works in law enforcement is some egocentric power-tripper who gets off on making people feel uncomfortable or helpless; nor do I think that every civil servant is some lazy, useless sociopath interested in their own amusement or goofing off at the taxpayers expense.  I don't immediately distrust people in law enforcement or other government service.  They are people who are screened and qualified to do their jobs; they are interested in protecting the innocent and doing right by their employer- the taxpayer.  There needs to be oversights, but the people (as they are real, living breathing people with homes and children) working for the government should be given every logical effective means to ensure the safety of 8 year-olds, runners, students, airline passengers, retirees, office workers, patients in hospitals, and everyone else.

I share your general respect of civil servants and law enforcement. As individuals I'm sure they're mostly fine people (with the regular exceptions all humans can have).

There are two problems. Well, probably more. But we'll start with two.

First, it's not the individuals in question, but the process being used. If it's broken, and I think many of us concluded it is, then no matter how much good faith a person puts into their job, it's still garbage-in-garbage-out.

Second, our founding fathers anticipated bureaucratic bungling in addition to the road to hell being paved with good intentions and general power grabbing. That's why they created the 4th Amendment. It says that you can't just have a reason to search someone, you have to have a *good* reason.

Let's say you've got a good reason. Yay! Take it to a judge, who will provide a healthy level of skeptical oversight, and let him (or her) concur. Then we have a system with...what's it called? Oh, yeah. Checks and balances.

Neat.

Interesting history on the 4th that I hadn't heard before.

QuoteThe Fourth Amendment, which guarantees the right to be left alone, was written largely in response to legislation Parliament enacted in the colonial era that permitted British soldiers to write their own search warrants and then use those warrants as a legal basis to enter private homes.

The ostensible purpose of doing that was to search through the colonists' papers looking for stamps, which the Stamp Act required the colonists to affix to all documents in their possession.

The laws that permitted the soldier-written search warrants and the Stamp Act were the British government's fatal political mistakes, which arguably caused a major shift in colonial opinion toward secession from Britain 10 years before the bloody part of the Revolution began.

A curious parallel.

I guess that, in some ways, it's an apples-n-oranges comparison- as I'm looking at the issue from a different national perspective. The checks and balances exist, it's just that the processes are different.

IMHO, every system is flawed.  My only fear involves the lack of interest in making it (whatever it is) better.

The description of the supermax facility where he's headed sounds like hell on earth: 23.5 hours of solitary confinement. Chatted with a buddy who'd been to visit one. It sounded quite grim. So even if the appeals process takes time, it's good to know he'll be held in that environment.

His lawyer dresses like a villain from DC comics....Psychedelic Doucheman or something. It's like Riddler's mom dressed him.

Maybe we could hire out Kim Jong Un to handle our high profile executions. He seems to have a...creative streak...when it comes to such things. We could offer him Dennis Rodman as a keeper.
