Title: Immersive Skyrim
Post by: PanzersEast on April 23, 2013, 08:53:00 PM
After a week or over of testing I have been trying to make Skyrim as immersive as I can.  I have the vanilla Skyrim as I have not purchased the DLC yet so the mods below all work out of the box.  I know that there are a lot of mods and I tested what I thought was the best of two or three of the same type and I am sure I have missed some along the way.  First, a couple of house rules that make the game tough and more immersive.

I will come back and update this list as I am still going through several other mods.... this however is my current setup and I am very pleased with it.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
House Rules:

1: No Fast Travel
There are several mods like FrostFall, Realistic Needs and Diseases etc.. that take full advantage of you not fast traveling from location to location.  You will still need to sleep as the RND mod will cause your skills to diminish if you do not etc...

2: No Theft From Player Homes (if you did not purchase or quest)
3: No Gold Farming
4: No Working outside of game paramaters

Playing DiD is not realistic as some of the mods scale up up and randomize the skills and levels of those you encounter.

I have all of the mods listed below running together... just make note that I do suffer the occasional crash (usually I can go sessions without ymmv), however the Autosave manager is a great feature and makes it not a breeze to pick back up.

______________________  PLAYER HOMES (Optional) ______________________

1. Legend of the Eagles Nest
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/34834
Probably my favorite player made home of all the downloads I have.  To gain access to this location you have to complete a short quest and it will cost you around 10,000 to add all the components to the home.  It has a nice backstory and is located at the summit of a mountain between Riverwood and Whiterun.  It comes complete with a stewart, guard, livestock, and mine.  The only downside I can find with this location is that the majority of the mannequin are outside as well as the forge... which is ok but odd as the snow and wind blow in.

2. Sutvaka Fortified Estate
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/33473
I will use the guards to go out and escort me whenever I leave to go somewhere.  With the added mods, it can be a very dangerous journey.

This is a close second to the Eagles Nest as it comes complete with a barracks and small garrison, draw bridge and gate.  The Estate is located near shearpoint between Whiterun and Windhelm.  As you enter the grounds you are greeted by your dog and a guard patrolling the grounds.  There are hidden passages, a prison ( and a nice flow to the estate.  Located on the grounds are 5 servants, a hunter, gardener, lumberjack and 2 miners, and 3 guards There is not a quest to acquire the estate.

I have most of the homes below active.

Might I suggest getting the immersive hud (iHUD) mod. It lets you toggle/turn off the health, stamina, magicka, and compass. Its very customizable and works completely with SkyUI's active effect hug icons.

Immersive Armors
Link - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19733
SkyRe Patch- http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/21269

That patch is out of date. You don't need the Immersive armor or any other armor/weapon compatibility patch for Skyrim Redone if you use the Skyrim Redone ReProccer. It automatically creates a compatibility patch for all of your mods http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/28467 (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/28467).

Make sure you get Balbor and Steelsouls SkyRe ReProccer project as well: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/27092 (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/27092). Balbor's RePorccer Project isn't necessary but it makes a few changes/fixes to the ReProccer XML so that certain mods get patched correctly.

Omegared99 - Armor Compilation - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/10277

I have others sprinkled in, however those two are my favorite.

As PE suggested get immersive armors. I think it includes the omegared99 armor set as, but I would have to read through the change log to verify.

I finally decided to use the Dragon Knight Armor for my current character. Its by the same author of the Immersive Armor mod, but it not included in IA at the moment: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/28287 (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/28287)

Cabal120 does some really good armor retextures. Doesn't include any new armor, but does make most of the existing armors have HD textures.

@PE: Have you tried the autosave manager mod? Have you noticed any crashes/bugs with it?

I have been using it for a couple of days and have not noticed anything different.  I do suffer from a CTD sometimes, but I really can't nail down what is going on (sometimes I can usually run for hours, but it is not a constant crash).  I believe it it just the sheer number of mods I am running so the Autosave manager really has come in handy and I can live with the occasional CTD because of everything I am running.  I have set auto-save to 15 min intervals and adjusted some other settings.

Funny story.....

Last night I loaded up my saved game and was riding on the road almost to Rorikstead when I noticed up ahead all these lights coming down the hill in the direction of Riverwood.  I was startled because I wondered what mod I had recently installed... so I though maybe it was the patrol mod, or bandit mod.... if so, I was in trouble.  I had one guy riding with me from the garrison at Sutvaka.

I rode ahead and realized, it was the Travellers of Skyrim script starting so all the travellers were starting out from the same location.... I thought they were maybe going to march and protest on Whiterun :-P

I have used it for a while, missed it on the list thanks.... I have added some more armour and divided the Homes and Cities apart.  There are some issues with running some of them together as they can overwrite the same space mesh.

Tested Skyrim Loadout and I preferred Categorized favorites over Skyrim Loadout.  I am not sure how much more I will add as I have a lot active and much more will break it I feel.... also having to keep up with them as well.

I have used it for a while, missed it on the list thanks.... I have added some more armour and divided the Homes and Cities apart.  There are some issues with running some of them together as they can overwrite the same space mesh.  I preferred Categorized favorites over Skyrim Loadout.  I am not sure how much more I will add as I have a lot active and much more will break it I feel.... also having to keep up with them as well.

PE

I think Duel Sheath is one of the best mods to come out in awhile. It beats all the skimpy armor mods. Although I hope the author expands it to include the functionality of Armed to the Teeth, where all of your equipped weapons get displayed.

I noticed a lot of player homes use the whiterun/rivverwood area. Doesn't surprise me some of them conflict. I tried Skyrim Loadout for an hour or two and then went back to categorized favorites (oni edition). I think the maximum number of plugins you can have loaded is 150 or 200, after that it the game will start to become really unstable or not playable at all. I currently have 136 files in my load order, and keeping track of them all is a little annoying. Not to mention having to run patches for both SkyRe and Duel sheath when ever I add/update/remove a mod or any special uninstall or update instructions a mod may require. As Gus said you can almost make a career out of modding Skyrim

Weapons and Armor Degradation and Repair with MCM Menu Options

Interesting NPCs - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/8429
Place 3DNPC before Nernies in your load order to prevent CTDs
Apocalypse Spell Package - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/16225
Cooking Expanded - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/1409

On hold>
Skyrim Immersive Creatures * Dawnguard required - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/24913

I am watching Immersive Bounty Hunting - http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/29448 as it is in Beta, but looks like a great idea.

I am just about at the end of testing and just playing... I was really interested in Immersive Creatures, Weapons and Armor Degradation and Repair, and Interesting NPCs to close it out.

It adds a lot of foliage to Whiterun and you can expects larger FPS drop.  I have now opted for Beautiful Whiterun http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/12110 (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/12110)  It keeps the feel of the town better imo and not like a settlement.

REALLY enjoying Interesting NPCs.... however with all the other mods UFO and Convenient horses, you have to use a compatibility alternate that is supplied with the mod... did not even try the main file as I figured it would break the other companion mods.

PE, Found a few more mods you might find interesting.

Less Intrusive HUD: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/35154/ (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/35154/)
Allows you to change/adjust pretty much every HUD element, including scaling, location, notifications, etc. It works with both SkyUI and iHUD.

Duel Wield Parry http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/9247/ (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/9247/)
Allows you to parry while duel wielding. SKSE version lets you set a block key. Has a controller package for those using a 360 controller;.

Nice, thanks.  I will give them a try.  Really interested in the dual wield parry.  Have you tried alternate start mod?

I've enjoyed interesting NPCs, although they can break your companions occasionally when battling on horseback... But I can overlook it as it only happened once.  I have a bard companion with me right now from the mod and he is pretty witty....

Have had a couple things crop up testing and will report back later.  One funny thing is purple potatoes as I have a missing texture :-p

Duel Wield Parry is a mod I've been looking for for awhile. I remember seeing it when it first came out and the author saying he was going to write and SKSE version, but I forgot about it until I saw it on a Youtube mod review.

I haven't tried an alternate start mod yet. If I can find one that works with Skyrim Redone, I'm going to use it for my next character. The prisoner intro gets old after awhile.

I've used interesting NPC's before. On my last character, I had a bug where UFO/Interesting NPC's wouldn't let me dismiss one of the new followers Interesting NPC's added. After trying to fix it, including temporarily uninstalling UFO, I just used the console and deleted him.

I've never seen that happen before. The position BOSS puts SMIM into has always worked for me.

Did a quick search on nexus and found only one alternate start mod that sounded like it still works:

Random Alternate Start http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/25404 (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/25404)

Random Alternate Start Compatablity Addons: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/33609/ (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/33609/)
Gives you some starting equipment from Immersive armors/weapons, and the apocalypse spell package.

Character Creation Overhaul: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/21587 (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/21587)
Not an alternate start mod, but adds classes, permanent birthsigns, etc into Skyrim.

I'll try and give them a go tomorrow and report back the results.

Installed and used Duel Wield Parry and it added to the list.

I have had some conflicts with some of the other mods and will post them later.  I also tried the following:

Limbwood Manor
A house in a tree, it has some nice features, however I prefer others.

Woodland Sanctuary
Had to remove the island mod to ge this to work.  Very cool island that is secluded with gate and nice grounds.

Proudspire Manor Refurbished
Have not bought this house yet
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/14630

Pinewoods Cottage
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/10370

Grey Ledge Manor
Had to remove one of the other places to get this to work, but I really like it.
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/18112

Orlongs Hearth
A medium sized compound outside of Riverwood.
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/8684

Still have not loaded Weapons and Armor Degradation and Repair and I am waiting on the SkyRe version of Apocalypse Spell Package to come out.

Kushan any luck on the alternate start mods?

I've been testing Random Alternate Start, Random Alternate Start - Compatibility Addons, and Character Creation Overhaul. I created a number of test characters over the weekend and really like all three. All three work with SkyRe, although the Apocalypse Spell Package required for the Compatibility addons mod has some minor imbalances with Skyrim Redone. Nothing game breaking, just a few spells that do the same thing and cost different magicka amounts.

With CCO, its the first time I've actually cared about what race/birthstone/class combination I want to play, since the perk categories you choose level up faster then the ones you don't by 5% to 20%+. I've restarted my new spellblade/mystical archer/assassin 4 times now trying to get my perks the way I want them.

The only issue I have had is with Random Alternate Start itself, although again its a very minor complaint. It randomly starts you in one of 460+ locations. These locations can be anywhere, the middle of a cave/dungeon, a bandit camp, Dwarven ruins, etc. All really awesome, until you start in the middle of Kargastan (the place outside the blades HQ), or in the middle of a bandit camp and get killed a minute or two after spawning. Luckily the game saves right after character creation, but its still a little annoying. I had one test character I had to restart 4-5 times before I got a place I didn't die automatically.

I would give all three a go if you want something different then the prisoner start.

I did a few tests with the Alternate Start - Live Another Life mod. It doesn't offer any random locations, but does let you start as a new member to a guild. When I started as thief, it gave me a thieves guild armor but no weapons. Overall I didn't feel it offered as many possibilities as the RAC+CA mods.

Thanks for the feedback I will have to give them a go as I may start over.  I have been tweaking locations and places in Skyrim that I have it just about right although one location steps on another (there is a magical door by itself).

Added Alternate starts to the main page.

I had to scale back the Realistic Needs & Diseases as I believe it ask for too much food, water and sleep as basic needs (I sleep for 24hrs and was still kind of tired).... or my character must be glutinous and lazy.

Do you use Dynamic Time Scale (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/10594 (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/10594))?  It seems to help with Realistic Needs not being so intrusive when you're in dungeons and the like.

I normally scale realistic needs to half the default values. Even with changing timescale the timescale, I think it asks for too much food, water, and sleep.

I really want to try it. i have it downloaded but haven't activated it yet. I find you get enough food from looting that unless your role playing a ranger, hunter, etc. that you don't need to hunt all that often, unless you make a concerted effort to do it. My next character is going to be a shaman/barbarian and I was planning on playing him a survival type character. No running to the closest town when Frostfall tried to kill me or anything like that, so Hunterborn will definitely get installed for that.

Does Hunterborn work with SkyTest or any of the other wildlife AI mods?

Tried these out with some thoughts:

Sneak Tools
This mod puts functionality back to SkyRe that was removed, however it does step on a couple of things.  If you are wanting to sneak around or scale the side of a wall with a rope attached to an arrow or put out lights with water arrows ala Thief, this mod has worked as advertised thus far. *Recommended
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19447

HunterBorn
This integrates perfectly with Winterfrost and Realistic Needs and Diseases.  It has MCM functionality and allows you to have several options that are mod specific to WF and RND. You can clean the animal for the pelt, also meat etc... a lot of options *Recommended
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/33201

Forgotten Magic Redone
This integrates well with Skyrim and feels like something that has always been there.  The menu system is easy to get to and use the upgrades. Everything is accessible through the MCM*Recommended
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/35339

Tame the Beast of Skyrim
I installed and used with no issues, however it is very cumbersome to use as you have to cast spells to interact with your animal.  Not sure if I will use this one, but walking down Whiterun with a Saber Cat makes you feel tough.
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/28944

Caranthir Tower
Have not gained access to this location yet, but no issues or clipping.
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/33674

Corners of Skyrim
There is a Minus 1 version that is compatible with the homes and city expansions I have installed.  Adds some good atmosphere and it appears to blend in well with Skyrim. Helps when you are out in the cold and Frostfall is bearing down on you. *Recommended
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/29824

Weapons and Armor Degradation and Repair with MCM Menu Options
Plan to test this one tonight.
http://www.skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/32057/

@ Kushan -  It appears it should be as this is from the creator.

There are patches for RND and Frostfall under optional files, and also a patch for Dawnguard (for the Vale deer and sabre cats). If you have Hearthfire, Hunterborn will detect it and automatically provide goat horns and mudcrab legs, no patch needed. If you have SkyRe, Hunterborn will detect it and give you an option to use the Gatherer perk instead of Hunterborn's own system for pelts.

And what about conflicts? Hunterborn doesn't have any "hard" conflicts, it changes absolutely no game resources, and has been verified clean in Tes5Edit. However, because Hunterborn does change *how* you access animal loot, it is ideologically incompatible with other mods that change animal loot; though you should still be able to make use of those mods if you "manual loot" a carcass. (It should work fine with Hunting in Skyrim, for example.)

@ Toonces  - That was very nicely done!

@ panzerde - I have not tried that yet.... I may need to look into it.

How bad are the conflicts with SkyRe? IIRC SkyRe already includes Sneak Tools into the sneak/pickpocket perk trees.

Hunting in Skyrim, another really good hunting mod for the game. Had it installed when I tried doing a ranger playthrough. From what I was able to play of it before my game got corrupted, it was really good. The mod at the time didn't include half of what it does now. They had the beginnings of the guild hall, and maybe a few quests. Definitely a mod to try with Hunterborn or by itself.

Only thing I could tell were the perks maybe a little confusing  as SkyRe makes you earn them and Sneak Tools adds them automatically.  I need to play through it some more, but with the addition of the rope arrow etc.... playing a character who uses stealth I see this mod as a must.  I am playing a Ranger character who I prefer to sneak when possible.

Q: I am using SkyRe, how will this interact with Sneak Tools?
A: In the past, Sneak Tools was fully merged into SkyRe and then changed a bit inside SkyRe, to add new features through perks instead of adding them automatically for example. In later versions, the author of SkyRe no longer fully merged all new features in new Sneak Tools versions, but only those he liked personally. BOSS may tell you that Sneak Tools is fully included in SkyRe, but that's false.

This means that in order to get the full functionality from Sneak Tools, you should still also download and install Sneak Tools. Some features may be in your game twice in slightly different ways (for example, there may be SkyRe perks which add features you already have access too because Sneak Tools gives them to you for free), so in that way some things might be confusing, but other than that everything should work fine.

It is advised to load the plugin(s) from Sneak Tools AFTER the plugins from SkyRe.

Thanks PE. I'll download it tonight. The one thing I don't like about it being in SkyRe is that perk requirements are really high and unless you power level sneak you won't get them until late game, after you have probably already done the two quest lines where they would be useful.

Kushan are you using UFO or AFT?  I have had AFT on my to try list, however just has not been a priority as I have used UFO with no problems.

UFO. I tried AFT but found the follower controls/customization to be really tedious. AFT really needs a MCM menu rather then trying to handle everything through dialog options. UFO keeps its dialog controls to a minimum. You have more control over your followers with AFT, for instance you can use it to force your followers to be vampires or werewolf's, but it comes at a cost of feeling clunky.

When you guys get done with this, you're going to have to narrow this down to like five ultimate, can't live without mods.

Someone like me can't keep up with all of this stuff.  I don't need bull.  Just tell me what I can't life without and I'll go with that.

And, I look forward to what you do with Oblivion.  I really need to give Oblivion one final play-through before I die.

I'll add those.  I have not installed the add-ons as of yet so I forgot to add them.

I also have started experiencing a CTD around Darkwater Crossing and noticed that Nernies City and Villages Exp. and Expanded Cities and Towns were stepping on each other..... I removed the Expanded Cities and Towns version of Darkwater and now the meshes are messed up in the area but no more CTD.  The bridge extends into a building and vanishes etc...  Not sure how to correct the mesh area (clean with tes5edit?)  nothing else is in the area that I know of that is conflicting and it should be working.....  Maybe it is just the leftover mess from having two in same area..... not sure.

Uninstall both mods. Then open up both mods zip files and compare/manually check your data file to verify NMM removed all the appropriate files. It should have, but it never hurts to check. After you've checked your data file, relaunch the game and do another clean save, exit and reinstall one of the mods. As logn as you used NMM to install, all meshes and texture should have been removed, but it sounds like it may have missed something.

You could also try going to another cell, preferably in doors, and waiting 10 days for the cells to reset. But I don't think you normally have to do that for house and town mods.

Thanks, I'll give it a go.  I have not had issues in the past, however like you said it could have missed a file.  I have learned that the city and town mods are very tricky to deal with.... so once I have them set I will leave them alone.   The problem is I have not traveled to all of them to make sure there are no conflicts.

I was thinking about that and I believe the outdoor cells reset as well.... I know that the random spawns are timed (the organized bandit mod will not work until you are in game 10 days) and I believe a lot of the loot and dead bodies found around the sites are reset as well.  I give this a look as well.

All cells reset after 10 in game days, with the exception of ore veins and harvestable plants which I believe re-spawn every 30 days. If you decide to wait, its usually advised to go wait in someplace like dragonsreach or breezehome

Unique Bows Collection

Windhelm Lighthouse
Don't think this is lore accurate, but very cool.

Dark Elven Armor and Weapons
I prefer the dark Elven armor look over the shiny looking armor.  If has a replacement or a stand alone... I prefer the replacement.

Belt-Fastened Quivers
Now Nexus Manager compatible

A side-note and just my opinion and I know others have said it, but Skyrim has one of the best sound tracks I have heard.... very well done.

PE, you should try the amidianborn retexture for the elven armor. It comes in gold and black versions. You can also use his Book of Silence mod which contains all of his armor retextures and has a really good installer that lets you choose between all of his various armor retexture options. BGM is also a really good glass and elven armor retexture. I use BGM for glass and aMidianBorn for elven.

Since I have added so many mods with my current play through I have been getting more CTD or Freezes..... however I am far enough along that at this point I will just live with it until I start a new character.  No Boring Sleep-Wait Menu has been a big help and the new Book retextures really look nice.

How balanced are the enchanted bows? Are they overpowering or are they balanced? What I've normally seen when mod authors mention custom enchants, are enchants that can kill almost anything in one shot...

I know the un-enchanted are fine and are lore friendly, however I have just started hunting for the enchanted.  Stats weise they are somewhere around the glass or a little above level and the enchantments vary.  I read that they are pretty hard to find.... not sure if that is an offset of how powerful they are and I believe I ready that selling them can be an exploit.... but so is opening the console line....

I have also seen that enabling the free camera when using the No Boring Sleep-Wait Menu makes you have to wait less real time... I use it when starting the Organized bandits mod.

Interesting..... that combines two needed features.

I have cut back on some of my mods.... I have had constant crashes and freezes as I have too many mods.  I removed Nernies City and Villages, Expanded Cities and Towns, Laintar Dale, Hunter Adobe and some other areas and Guess the Distance.  I have to scroll through my MCM menu lol....

So far I did a clean save, installed only a individual files of Nernies and left Immersive Settlements in place.  I still had some crashes, however it appears things have stabilized but I know there will still probably will be crashes without doing a new start so I will limp along with my character.

I also re-enabled the Character Creation Overhaul to get the perks. We shall see.....

PanzerEast's Elder Scroll install List  (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AoMAya5hEIotdGlkMWRyTkdaOXNjaEF1Tmk4QnkwSWc&usp=sharing/)

As I add or delete mods I will mark them on the sheet.  I realize that most have moved on from Skyrim, but if you have not played in a while, there are many good mods that change the game.  This list may help with the heart burn.  Also, remember to always run BOSS after you install any mod and during the course of a character you install a mod, use the Clean Install Method and you should be fine.

Also recommended using the Alternate Start mods....

PE, are you updating the front page still?

Also, you seem to be using selected portions of Nernies and the ExTownCit sets; is that right? And you're no longer using the Corners or the Campsites?

I've bought and installed Hearthfire, but not Dragonborn or Dawnguard (waiting for those to go on sale. ;) ) You've got the updates to those installed, so I presume you've installed those DLC, too. Does Hearthfire interfere with BuildAHouse or do they compliment one another?

Dynamic timescale seems super-important if other mods are installed.  ???

I suppose I should install the utilities first (is there a recommended install order between them?) And then... the graphics mods? UI? Doesn't really matter?

I didn't see autosave manager on the list anymore; is that because it's combined with Dynamic timescaling now?

What does "ENB" at the top of the spreadsheet mean?

Install order really only matters for graphics mods where you may want one texture to overwrite another. For instance I use the BGM mod for Glass armor, (which also retextures elven armor) but I use aMidianBorn for elven. So I install BGM first then aMidianBorn's and have them overwrite BGM's elven armor textures. The beuty of using the Nexus Mod manager is that if I should ever decide I want to use the BGM elven textures all I have to do it deactivate the mod and NMM will revert back to BGM textures automatically. I would install utilities first then start downloading and installing mods.

Once steam installs skyrim and you download the NMM and SKSE you will use Nexud Mod Manager to install mods and launch Skyrim through SKSE shortcut, you will only need stream running in the background.  BOSS is only ran after you install a mod or group of mods through NMM.

All mods that I am using together are here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AoMAya5hEIotdGlkMWRyTkdaOXNjaEF1Tmk4QnkwSWc&usp=sharing/

What does "ENB" at the top of the spreadsheet mean?

END is a graphics mod of sorts. It "injects" various graphic settings into the game, most of which are not already included in the base game. There are a ton of different presets you can download. I personally don't use it for several reasons. I prefer Imaginator to customize/fine tune the look of my game and with most of the ENB presets I have tried there is a pretty significant performance hit due to how it injects settings into the game.

ENB is graphics enhancement files.

Corners and Campsites conflicted and I hate it did as I really liked them but had to remove them.
Fleetford is one of my favorite town addons and they conflicted with it :-(

Nernies had issues and another person separated them so I used the seperate files so I could use more mods.

I can post a guide if you like with step by step of how I setup my current install if you want.

Spreadsheet will be most up to date and what is running together and not just suggestions.  They should all work together and I will continue to update and note any changes.

Did not have a single crash or freeze last night.

Many thanks! I've now registered at Nexus and installed NMM and run Skyrim once to get its ini file set up so NMM will recognize and work with it.

Next I suppose will be installing SKSE.

I suppose mods from Steam are simply set up through the Steam Workshop thingy, not through NMM?
Title: Re: Immersive Skyrim

SKSE installed. Apparently I forgot to tell Steam to add a start menu item, so I created a new one pointing to SKSE.

Can't quite figure out how to do the same thing from within Steam yet, so I'll have to be careful not to run the game by pointing to it in the Steam menu -- use my Classic Start Shell instead....

Next up: BOSS now installed and run for the first time, detects SKSE and all three Skyrim functionals (the primary exe, the update and Hearthfire currently). Says this about the update and the Hearthfire DLC: "Contains dirty edits: 92 ITM, 3 UDR records. Needs TES5Edit cleaning. A cleaning guide is available here."

Should I bother with that at all, or will the various unofficial patches deal with that?

Meanwhile: I'm going to guess my next installs should be the unofficial patches (for main exe and then Hearthfire) and then the three main overhauls listed afterward.

That is correct, do not install mods through STEAM as they will automatically update and that can cause problems.  A couple maybe Steam only but you can skip them.

1. Install Steam and Run once
2. Install NMM
3. Install SKSE and run from the skse_loader.exe file (always launch Skyrim from this)
4. Install Unoffical Skyrim Patch from Nexus
5. Install SkyRe
6. Install SkyRe Uncap mod
7. Install SkyUI
8. Install BOSS and have the exe handy
9. Start installing mods at will (just double check to make sure there are no prerequisites)

Skip TES5Edit for now, that can get dicey and some of the dirty edits will not effect the game.

That is correct, do not install mods through STEAM as they will automatically update and that can cause problems.  A couple maybe Steam only but you can skip them.

Well, you do have a couple from Steam yourself in the list; which is why I asked. :)

So if I decide to use those two towns (Amber Guard and Oakwood) (which I may not), I do those through Steam Workshop, not NMM?

1. Install Steam and Run once
2. Install NMM
3. Install SKSE and run from the skse_loader.exe file (always launch Skyrim from this)
4. Install Unoffical Skyrim Patch from Nexus
5. Install SkyRe
6. Install SkyRe Uncap mod
7. Install SkyUI
8. Install BOSS and have the exe handy
9. Start installing mods at will (just double check to make sure there are no prerequisites)

I've already installed BOSS, is that a problem? (Seems like it shouldn't be...)

Yes for the Steam ones... they are not hosted on Nexus unfortunately (I recommend Oakwood).

Does not matter on BOSS, it is third party so no biggie.

Right, good, up to NMMing SkyUI now.

Other UI's next I guess, then on to main graphic mods.

Back to the Autosave question: is that part of another mod now? I don't see it anywhere unless it's part of the Dynamic Timescale mod you're testing, but you heavily recommended it in your opening list.

Heh, I saw part of your order as "Jolly Hooker". ;) BOSS will order those, right? Or I can tweak them from... would it be within BOSS, or NMM?

(Hopefully these questions will be useful to others following in your modsteps. :) )

NMM says that the Quality World Map Installer has been added. "Installer"? Is that something I should be doing something about directly?

Note: I found the Autosave Manager on your Install list (under user interfaces), so that answers that question.

lol, yea the Hooker is a inn  ;)

Yes, BOSS set this order for me, however you can reorder it manually if desired.

I am still using the AutoSave Manager http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/34842 as I have not had any problems with it..... I recommend it for now.

I do the manual download and then add the file (zip or rar) from download location.  Next just double click to install the mod.  Some mods have options when you double click on them from NMM and you can set what is installed from the mod.... for example some weapon mods have various textures you can install so the author gives you a menu that you can select from while installing it from the NMM.

Okay, I installed the mod from NMM and picked the Hi-res map with main roads, no cloud clearing.

Then I discovered that all the mods have to be activated like that within NMM.

Then I discovered that some of them overwrite each other.

Which of course leads back to the question of which ones to install first.

As for Skyrim HD -- I have a Falcon MachV bought last Christmas. It's the fastest commercially available computer on the planet (or was last Christmas. ;) I'm not too worried.

Some overwrite and that is ok and is usually noted.... however when you are patching a mod for compatibility etc..., make sure when is ask you if you are updating (first popup) click NO, then click yes to overwrite.  You should be ok.

Thx!

The High Quality 3D Map is confusing me a bit. I've installed Meshes Hi-Res and Normals Original (because there has to be a normals file and there's only one at the moment), but since I'm downloading and activating Skyrim HD 2K textures (full not lite) I should DL and activate  "HQ3DMap - Textures Skyrim HD 4k" to go with that and not the version for "Realistic Skyrim" (which doesn't seem to exist anymore or something anyway)... right?

Okay it turns out both mods are actually the same mod: trying to install both resulted in a message that the mod was being duplicated. (I might have noticed the mod number for both of the "uncappers" in your list was the same. Sorry.)

At any rate I deactivated Skyre, activated the Uncapper, then reactivated Skyre saying yes to all consequent replaces.

No issue with it as it is a stand alone mod.... I did not really care for it so I removed it but left it on the main page in case someone else liked it.  The only amour mods you have to worry about are those that replace texture files or alter mesh files, stand alone are no sweat.

Clarification question: does one of the programs automatically move the mods around in the load order properly? Is that BOSS?--or does it only check for conflicts? NMM certainly can move mods around in the load order manually.

BOSS automatically sorts your load order, Make sure NMM is closed when you run it. BOSS isnt perfect though, when you look at the boss log, you might noticed a category called "unreconized plugins" these are mods that are not in BOSS's data base. You'll have to use NMM to manually sort those plugins.

Okay, ran BOSS without NMM; then tried launching Skyrim SKSE from within NMM. It runs the Bethesda open but then quits.

Same if I run SKSE directly without NMM running.

After lunch I'll need to compare my order/active list with PE, try to get that the same, deactivate mods not in PE's list (I have a few), then try launching SKSE again.

If that works, then I'll go back and reactivate mods (one at a time) not in PE's list, reading the description window for hints about where to put them (after letting BOSS deal with each one.)

It does that when a mod is missing a master file. Easiest way I know to find out where its error out is to run TES5Edit.

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/25859/? (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/25859/?)

Extract the .zip files, doesn't matter where, I usually do it in my main install folder (not that data folder). Run the exe, select all your mods, it will load all your mods just like the game, it will error out and stop loading when it gets to the mod that is causing problems.

Normally if it quits after the opening screen this means that there us likely a compatibility issues with one of the mods.  Maybe there is a Hearthfire patch needed with one if the mods or another DLC is required?

Title: Re: Immersive Skyrim

BOSS didn't say anything about one of my mods needing another DLC, but it did say one of the mods needs a Hearthfire patch; when I checked up on that however the designer said he had already incorporated the patch into the version of the mod that I downloaded.

Still, that makes sense: I know I stopped from getting a couple of mods because they needed Dragonborn or Dawnguard.

Kush! -- Thanks, didn't read your message until a few minutes ago; I had already deactivated all mods (except for official update and Hearthfire). Tested those with TES5Edit, and (as hoped ;) ) it saw no problem.)

I'm going to try activating mods in PE's load order, so each subsequent mod will have priority of modification where there are overlaps (this mods that, the other mods this, etc.)

MTAutoStorage is Automatic Item Storage used by some of the player homes... and SPIKE is Skyrim Plugin Interaction Keyword Executive Master File by Eck... I believe these two are placed and used by another mod and not by themselves.

Jswords are like many other mods, there are dirty edits etc.... when running this many mods.  I have not seen any issues thus far.

Yep, it is compatible.  Just make sure to follow the steps below

Helgen Reborn is 100% compatible with LAL as long as you follow a few simple steps which are almost exactly as the steps above. Helgen MUST be destroyed for my quest to start, so choose what ever life you wish to choose and get started.

When you want to start my quest, follow Arthmoor's procedure for reverting Helgen to it's destroyed state and you should be good to go. Again, the bandits that take over the fort MUST be enabled, especially for LAL users because of the collapse in the keep that is added by LAL. To enable the bandits using LAL, enter Whiterun through the MAIN DOOR four days after Unbound is completed, NOT by fast traveling into the city.

For users playing with an existing character, as long as Helgen is destroyed and the bandits have taken over the fort, you should be good to go and have nothing to be concerned with. Load my mod, wait 4 days, change locations and the quest should update.

If all of this somehow fails, you can start the quest with the console by putting in: setstage BalokHelgen01 5

Helgen Reborn
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/35841
Very well done.  Voice acting is good, the plot is very good and you have different paths to choose from.  It feels like a mini DLC and I highly recommend.

Farview Cabin
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/23750
This cabin is between two mods I already have installed Ranger Cabin and Riverside Lodge with no clipping issues.  The cabin has a lot of details and is well laid out.  I don't use every home, however I like to have them loaded in case I choose to vacate or start a new character and it adds to the scenery.

The Cabin in Falkreath
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/21929/
Nice small cabin that overlooks Falkreath.  The cabin is really designed for a solo pad, however has lots of details and well laid out.  It does not conflict with my current install of mods.

Lost Swords and/or its SkyRe patch were causing a crash in TES5edit last night, despite them loading in the positions of PE's list; don't know why yet, I'll have to test whether a weapon mod or two I've added in extra is the problem.

(I'm not adding in quite all of your modlist, PE. I'm still in the middle of carefully activating mods according to your load order while studying their descriptions for requirements, recommended corollaries and proper load order.)

I seem to have found a bug in one of my mods, where armor is randomly being duplicated and dropping. Whiterun has a huge amount of guard armor scattered around. It only seems to be armor, no clothes, weapons, misc items, etc are being duplicated.

I have a mod that has screwed my scripts up I believe..... Constant ctd and I have wasted too much time trying to fix with no success.  I have gone back days for saves and I may just take a break because I really didn't want to start a new character.

Is it armor specific to a mod? Because that could be a clue (although not necessarily I suppose).

I note that you recently installed Helgen Reborn, and we know that that mod acts weird when you don't go through the normal plot start. It seems even more likely to get screwy if you install it in the middle of a gameplay after having newgamed from an alternate start.

I don't think its an armor mod. Most of what I am seeing is duplicated guard armor, and I don't have any mod that modifies them.

Sounds like something is locally affecting the script that restocks loot in an area.

Is it only happening in Whiterun?--can you fast-travel to other cities and check them out? (Does it perhaps stop after fast-traveling to Whiterun?)

Also, have you done anything in the game directly and specifically involving guard armor, that would trigger the game to specially attend to that for any reason?

It was not the Helgen but another mod that did it in.... I am going back through the list but they are listed in my testing section.

PE, I'm wondering if part of your problem may be that you've installed/uninstalled mods in the middle of a playthrough. I've had a couple of saves get corrupted because I did that too much. For the most part installing mods isn't an issue, uninstalling them can cause the issues your having.

I've never used Aela as a follower. In my last playthrough I did use Lydia throughout the game without Fus Roh Dahing her off the throat of the world.

I believe it is, however have tried to balance the mod install with the saves.  No doubt I have some orphaned  scripts running so that will cause some issues.  So far I am back and running and I should have uninstalled Aela correctly but in my haste I did not.  There were no active quest and I may have to use the console to remove her from using a companion slot.

I think from this point I am just going to use Interesting NPCs and leave it at that.

SKSE Borderless Window

Double Cursor Fix
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/36125//? (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/36125//?)

I've seen a performance increase with SKSE Borderless Window that I didn't get the old simple borderless window mod or running the game with the default full screen mode. Its a proven fact that the bethesda games (TES and Fallout) run better in window mode.  I had a performance increase with SBW but I still had a lot of micro stuttering, while I don;t have any of that with the SKSE version. I cant tell if Double cursor fix is working or not, but I haven't seen the double cursor bug when alt tabbing since I installed it this morning. I alt tabbed on and off for 5-10 minutes and was unable to force the bug to happen.

I think I was also able to find that the possessive corpses mod was causing the duplicate items bug I was seeing.

Do either of you know anything about NMM's updater being bugged? (I feel like I recall someone saying something about this previously...)

The program's automatic updater seems to be getting into some kind of endless loop today. It can't cancel but won't progress once checking on a new version gets halfway done.

Update: never mind, apparently the problem was that if Steam was also downloading something the updater got confused. I made sure Steam wasn't updating anything and tried again no problems. In fact the new incremental update just incorporated one of two planned loading-speed fixes when a ton of mods are installed!--I noticed a big change right off the bat. :)

It not hard to make that mistake. You have to dig through SkyRe's optional files in order to find the vanilla non dawnguard/dragonborn version of the mod and T3ndo's version numbering can also be a little confusing pre v1.0.

The ReProccer requires Dawnguard. It may also require Dragonborn at this point. Its been awhile since I last played.

As for as getting IA and SkyRe to work. You can try searching the nexus for the old SkyRe/IA patch. However, its probably for a much older version of both SkyRe and IA, and with the release of the ReProccer, probably, no longer supported. Theres no way that I know of to get the ReProccer to work with vanilla Skyrim + SkyRe.

Need to get the DLC... there are some pretty good mods that have been released and I am going to update my Skyrim File after I can get and test them and update the correct install order.  The Bosmer armor pack mentioned above is worth downloading and very nicely done.

The Way of the Dovahkiin - Ultimate Deadly Encounters aka Sands of Time
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/12452
Deadly encounters are the name of the game with this mod.... I always like to find mods that make Skyrim more dynamic in environment and this one fits the bill.  You need both of the DLCs to run and once I have them I will test it out.  Keep an eye open when you sleep, fast travel, etc...... no where is safe now

Ebonvale
Trade Settlement
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/41391
This adds another settlement to the Skyrim world with a very interesting backstory and some unique offerings.  This settlement resides between Whiterun and Riverwood and is very high in detail.  I am currently testing it out.

Organized Bandits In Skyrim
http://www.skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/31264
Has been updated since last I used and now has MCM integration.  I will be updating and testing tonight.  It gives more dynamic feel to Skyrim and bandits are now to be respected.... especially now that they are organized in groups and do not like you.....

I highly recommend:

Audio Overhaul for Skyrim:
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/43773//? (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/43773//?)

Overhauls all the sound effects. Makes them a little louder, more clearer, and able to be heard from a longer distance.

ENBoost
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/38649//? (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/38649//?)

I got a pretty massive performance boost from this. I like it alot more then I did Hidalgo. The install process seems complicated but is rather easy. The only thing to note when using is to make sure Vsync is on or use something liek dxtory to lock your FPS at 69-60, I had items it buildings getting thrown randomly around rooms because my FPS was too high.

A Matter of Time - Clock Widget
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/44091//? (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/44091//?)

Adds a MCM configurable SkyUI clock icon to the UI. I thought I was goign to hate it when I first heard about it but after using it I find it a lot more immersive then constantly going to the menu to check the time in game. Have it set to the same toggle key as iHUD, so I can toggle everything at once.

Less Intrusive HUD II
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/35154//? (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/35154//?)

Allows things like health/mana/stamina/compass/etc bars to be moved and resized. Fully compatible with iHUD and SkyUI

There's a lot to be said for the wisdom of this line of thinking!  I've spent most of my Skyrim time modding the damn thing, rather than actually playing.  Exactly what happened to me with Oblivion, and exactly what I promised myself I wouldn't do this time.... *sigh*

Still, Gus, if there is *one* mod you really should install, it's SkyUI.  The crappy console-imported UI is just painful.  Do yourself a favor and install just this one.

General question for all you heavy modders out there -- how many plug-ins are you guys playing with, in general?  I found I've had to *leave out* a bunch of mods I wanted to play with just to keep the number around 200, which is in itself insane.  Even with this 'modest' number -- that doesn't include serious overhauls like SkyRE, Frostfall etc. etc. -- I'm getting ocassional CTDs, which just sucks.

I too fear performancs issues. Right now Skyrim has a perfect record on my machine with about 150 hours in...not one crash in all that time. I don't want to ruin that.

And honestly.the UI never really bothered me that much. Irritating...yes sometimes. But it really doesn't annoy me enough to futz around with it.

251 plugins I believe is the max amount. Also be aware that Skyrim will crash if it gets over 3.1GB of RAM uses. I find it helpful to keep my mods limited to ones that will effect my current play through. For instance when I play a mage, I don't have Hunterborn installed. I realized a longtime ago I don't have to install every mod for ever playthrough. I start with game play mods like SkyRE and Frostfall that I use all the time, then install texture mods, then install mods just for what ever type of playthrough I'm doing

This is on par with official DLC and has over 8,000 endorsements on Nexusmods and only requires the latest version of Skyrim.  It adds an entirely new area to the game.

I believe it is on Nexusmods only, however there is a manual download and install so you do not have to use the NexusMod Manager.  It is straight forward to manual install by following the below directions, or if you wish, I can walk you through the Nexusmod Manager install.

*To install Falskaar simply extract all items in the archive into your Skyrim/Data folder. The archive should contain 4 items, "Falskaar.esm", "Falskaar.bsa", "Video/Falskaar_Intro.bik", and "Video/Falskaar_Outro.bik". Place Falskaar.esm in your load order above all ESP files, as close to the DLC as possible. (So close to the top) Exact order may not matter, as Falskaar shouldn't conflict with many things, but it should be near the top as other mods may later edit Falskaar.

This is very smart.  Wish I had thought of this before getting into my current game.  There are definitely mods I could afford to uninstall based on my character type / play style.  But I'm worried f I uninstall any at this point, I'll corrupt my saves going forward.

Have you guys gone the ENB route?  I'm using RealVision and like the atmospheric effects it adds, at pretty minimal fps impact using the 'performance' version.

Also, I think you don't need ENBboost with the latest ENB series (0.229?) because this version incorporates it.

Depends on what type of mods. Anythign game play changing or ones that might have scripts its generally not a good idea to uninstal mid game. I've lost a few saves by abusing it too much by installing/uninstalling mods constantly. Learned my lesson after the 2-3rd character. A lot of the new mods that are utilizing SkyUI's MCM function have an uninstall option that will stop any scripts that they run.

I have not. I'm currently using RCRN (Realistic Colors Realistic Nights). I was using a combination of Climates of Tamriel and RLO (Realistic Lighting Overhaul) or Enhanced Lights FX. CoT is still my preferred weather mod, but I like the colors / lighting with RCRN. I've been thinking about trying an ENB at some point. Trying to find one that I like and that doesn't have a huge performance hit. Some of cinematic ones are fine for screenshots but I'd hate to play with them.

Not sure if its included or not. I know its built into the config file for ENB but I downloaded ENBoost and replaced the default ENB ini file with one for my graphics card/amount of VRAM that came with the ENBoost download.

ENBoost
http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/38649//? (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/38649//?)

I got a pretty massive performance boost from this. I like it alot more then I did Hidalgo. The install process seems complicated but is rather easy. The only thing to note when using is to make sure Vsync is on or use something like dxtory to lock your FPS at 69-60, I had items it buildings getting thrown randomly around rooms because my FPS was too high.

I take this back. I found I got a better performance boost by using ENB to lock my FPS at 60 rather then Dxtory. Dxtory actually crashed my game with ENB installed.

That being said, I ran all around Riverwood, with the static mesh improvement mod installed (adds a ton more polygons to the area) with view distances set to max, and didn't experience so much as a stutter. Was rather amazed since doing the same without ENBoost brings even my gaming rig to its knees. Can't recommend ENBoost enough. After playing some last night and watching Gophers latest Skyrim Let's Play, I'm thinking of switching back to Climates of Tamriel and using an full blown ENB with ENBoost built in. Performance loss was always a major turn off for me. Want to find one that looks realistic and doesn't have depth of field set insanely high.

Gopher's Skyrim tutorials are freakin' amazing.  And he's done like a hundred of them (not to mention  the mods he's created).  Anyone interested in modding or ENBs should really check these out.  Time well spent.

Kushan, you might give RealVison a try - performance version.  This version doesn't add any of the Depth if Field camera focusing (can't recall the technical name for this) -- I find it very distracting and am glad not to use it.  I really like the look of this ENB, and it's very FPS friendly.  Gophers video on it is worth watching -- seems to be the ENB he settled on, unless he's moved on to something else in the meantime.

Gophers tutorials are a definite must watch for anyone wanting to get into modding Skyrim. His LP's are one of the few that i watch consistently.

I believe Gopher settled on using the Phinix EMB (or at least that's whats listed). I just got done trying it out for a bit. I instantly lost 20 FPS that I was getting with RCRN. I went from 60 down to 40, but the game still ran smooth as butter. I ran all through Falkreath and Riverwood and my FPS never dropped below 40. Hope to have some screenshots later.

What does Frostfall do?

With a couple of mods, Skyrim turns into surviving in Skyrim....  Frostfall measures the temperature outside and what items you are wearing to gauge the effects it will have on you.  If  you are not adequately protected or have a way to get warm, the end is not good.

- Frostfall - Hypothermia Camping Survival
This mod gauges the outside temperature and your attire and then applies effects to your health and skills.  It also reconized most mods and will inform you how protected you are with that item you have put on.

With skyrim redone + frostfall + RND, creatures (not including dragons) becomes the least of your concerns. Playing with frostfall in hardcore mode right now. Have to really plan out my routes before moving in the northern regions and make sure I leave myself enough time to make camp before it gets dark.

All I've really done it to turn up the rate that you gain exposure above the normal limit. The normal rate is 1.0x. Not sure what the equates to in real time. If you want to only occasionally have to take cover then you can set it anywhere between 0 and 1.x or if you want a really hard game you can set it over 1.0x exposure rate. I tried the max amount but it was a bit to harsh for my taste, think my last setting was around 1.5x exposure rate. I figured a little higher then normal was appropriate given that I'm currently playing a Survivalist/Ranger.

One of the many improvements SkyUI adds is the MCM system in SkyUI. It lets you customize mod settings on the fly to suite your own personal taste. Its also cleaner and easier to program on the mod maker side of things as well. Its a lot better then the "old" way of doing things, which was to add an item (usually a book) into your inventory, which when read would bring up a cumbersome menu.

What a great thread! I'm especially interested to see how the Frostfall and Hunger mods impact gameplay. Can anyone recommend a good graphical mod? I heard about the EN Boost making graphics smoother but I'm a novice in this area.

Just to mention my Skyrim Legendary Edition Guide arrived today, at over 1000 pages. It's a freaking tome. I'm really going to enjoy my second play through, once I get some immersive mods installed.

I would go with either Realistic Colors Realistic Nights (RCRN for short) or Climates of Tamriel with either Realistic Lighting Overhaul (RLO) or Enhanced Lights and FX added to CoT. It really is a toss up between RCRN and CoT. I like the lighting in RCRN more. At the same time I like the weather in CoT a little more then RCRN. Not so say RCRN's is bad, its just a personal preference. Unfortunately the two mods are incompatible.

I recommend watching Gophers excellent Beginners Guide to Skyrim, He goes over everything about how to mod your game, and the various types of mods. Part 6 is all on lighting, and give you a really good comparison between CoT with RLO and CoT with ELFX.

For a novice I would avoid ENBs all together until you get your feet wet. Their not hard to install but they can require a little more knowledge about how Skyrim is set up then most mods. You don't need to use a ENB graphical mod to use ENBoost, all you need to do is download the ENB binaries and your good to go. Standalone ENBoost is even compatible with the two suggestions I have above. Gopher started doing a ENB series, where he tested a new ENB every week, but seems to have stopped doing that. He has mentioned that he wants to continue doing them, but given that he is currently doing two Let's Play Series and two different mod review video series, I don't expect him to do any ENB videos for awhile.

And we revisit Skyrim, the place that you cannot leave.

As many of you may be aware of, I run a lot of mods in my Skyrim so it has been prone to crashes.  Kushan sent me a link for the new Memory fix that I highly suggest an install as it has fixed my crashes.  Just follow the link below and it is a very easy and straight forward install:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37xAMUQc1oY&list=PL96C073B0B8BFC01D&index=103

Now, one thing I have considered is revamping my mod install list, but more importantly is continuing the expansion of Immersiveness of Skyrim and not just completing quest etc.... so here are a couple incorporations to make a living in Skyrim:

Economics

So I have started looking at the economics of Skyrim by incorporating the following mods.

Trade Routes
http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/49369
Trade Routes dynamically adjusts the gold value and merchant supply of smithing materials, animal parts, alchemy ingredients, food, drinks, soul gems and spell tomes based on regional patterns of supply and demand. As the name implies, these adjustments are carefully tuned and arranged in such a way that they create a network of profitable trade routes -- in fact, two separate networks.

Real Estate
http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/37774/?
This mod allows the Dovahkiin to become a landlord by purchasing and renting properties, like houses, shops, inns and more.
You can then use the income you receive from them to buy even more properties or you can just spend it as you want.

Trade and Barter
http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/34612
Trade in Skyrim is oversimplified and uninteresting. A particular type of merchant always has the same amount of gold and offers you the exact same prices as the same type of merchant in another part of the country. Merchants in small towns differ very little from those in the larger cities, and the only factors that affect price are your speech skill and any barter enchantments you might have.

Hunting

Hunterborn
http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/33201

Hunting in Skyrim - A Hunting Guild
http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/18866

Camping Kit of the Northern Ranger

Finishing in Skyrim

PE....I had to chuckle when I watched the video. 'Easy and straight forward' are subjective terms. The video is 42 minutes long and (subjectively speaking from my computer challenged perspective) I found it to be a quite complicated process.  Enough so that I am not even going to attempt it.  I appreciate the post because I do suffer some of the issues this fixes.  I've been spoiled by Matrix and Steam where mods and fixes are a pretty much a thoughtless process.

SKSE = Skyrim Script Extender. Most mods that use scripting require it. Examples are SkyUI (which if your playing on PC you need to be using), iHUD, SkyRe, Hunterborn, etc.

http://skse.silverlock.org/ (http://skse.silverlock.org/)

Gopher did a good install video on it. Its only 18 minutes long but you can skip most of it if you only want to know how to install it. Although if your interested in using it, its worth watching the full thing. Its not a complicated install process but I do suggest you at least download and install the NMM and use that to install the SKSE scripts. Gopher covers all of that in his video.

I just started getting into modding Skyrim and, wow, I see what you guys mean.  It is addictive.

I'm pretty boring with mods so far.  I got a few graphics mods, a towns overhaul that I really like for about 5 towns- adds a bunch more trees and plants.  I finally got Frostfall installed, Cloaks of Skyrim, and Winter is Coming.  I usually fast travel everywhere but with the Frostfall mod it might be more fun to walk/ride in between places for a while.

Now I'm all into finding enough pelts to craft some cloaks.  Funny, I probably have left about 100 pelts all over Skyrim and now I have to go out and hunt for them!

This is a good time.   8)

I like to think of myself as a collector, rather then a pack rat when it comes to the TES games ::) Fortunately there is a ton of house mods out there that provide plenty of display cases, mannequins for armor, and storage for all the miscellaneous junk.

Been wanting to jump back into Skyrim myself, just waiting to get my new computer set up. My replacement case can't arrive fast enough. Going to try out some quest mods this time around. At this point I;ve done most of the vanilla ones, and it is getting just a bit stale.

Yeah, I have bags and bandoliers, too.

I have a few more mods, but I can't remember them all.  I like the idea of more environmental and RPG patches like real hunger and needs or whatever it's called.  I usually just fast travel from quest to quest.  With all these mods installed it should make it a lot more interesting to walk from place to place, with the need to dress for the environment, camp overnight, hunt, build fires, eat, etc.  There's like more point to taking the time to get from point A to point B with the mods.  Or at least that's the idea.  I'll have to see how long it keeps my attention in execution.   ::)

I've been having fun with my very first Dog-Follower in the game and I laugh when he sometimes gets stuck at odd angles in rooms or lays down in the fireplace. Once while exploring an old ruin he jumped from a higher level trying to follow me and crashed on to me and another time I was trying to find a way down to a pool below me and he shows up already there, nothing but his face above water.

I've been through Skyrim three times, really loved playing an Orc fighter type wielding a maul. Dragons didn't stand a chance against that damage-dealing demigod. 8)

I don't like storing or caching stuff in Skyrim, because as soon as I store it somewhere, I'll forget about it. I don't carry all that much beyond what I want to use.

I guess you can say I packrat when it comes to books. I grab 'em wherever I can find them, even if I get repeats. Problem is I think there's only one house big enough to hold a ton of books (near the Bard's College IIRC).

My first character in vanilla Skyrim was an Imperial spellcaster type.  I guess that I'm the odd one out.  Everyone seems to go with the beefy 2-handed weapons.  They do seem like the most efficient way to go.

I became rather depressed with the whole thing when I found out that the spellcasting skills reach a hard cap at some point late in the game.  Stopped playing around that time and haven't really given it a serious go ever since.  Doesn't help that it can give me a headache from the weird view, and I gotta mod the FOV to be wider to get very far (which also had to be further tweaked due to some weirdness with the old FOV mod I used).
Title: Re: Immersive Skyrim
Post by: BanzaiCat on May 30, 2014, 12:06:55 PM
I did try a play-through as a fighter/mage type. I remember one place, in some temple where there was a spell gateway or something at the top of a set of stone stairs, which had a tough fight - my Orc managed to knock the crap out of them, but the nancy-boy fighter/mage I had got waxed several times. I think I gave up on that character at that point.

I don't mind the companions, but I do prefer solo play. The dog was helpful since he growled when something nasty was nearby, but when you're a walking tank with a nuts-bashing hammer, there's few ambushes that hurt.

Once I shot my dog with an arrow by mistake thinking he was an attacking wolf. He forgave me though he did look at me funny. I understand enemy mages can sometimes turn him against me. I don't know if I could kill him now, he's grown on me. I say "He" but in examination, he looks more like a "She"--- he has no external equiptment if you know what I mean. I wonder if there's a mod for that.

Size doesn't always matter. Vanilla SKyrim heavily favors a light armor/2-handed weapon combo. My favorite play through still remains my Aldmeri mage, my imperial knight (Sword+Shield) is a close second.

Because they land periodically and try to eat you.

Also, it isn't strictly necessary to be stealthy to be an archer. I mean, I was reasonably stealthy (or unreasonably stealthy via skill) despite my heavy armor, but I didn't have to stealth to POWERBOW a nearby dragon.

Then again, I rarely hit a dragon flying around anyway, unless it was (a) hovering to flambe someone and (b) not flaming me.

So yeah, all dragon kills I got basically came down to

1.) dodge dragon air attacks or wait for it to be aggro'd by something else

2.) wait for it to get tired of flying and land for a minute

3.) rush up, throw a couple of spells and shouts, pound it with my dual maces, just not directly in front of it so it won't instakill me with a bite.

4.) maybe repeat as necessary. After two or three times tops it'll be too wounded to fly.

(Also, I'm glad Gus unlocked the thread? What happened there? ???)

Hey Uber- just saw your question.

I've played through twice as a spellsword, one handed with sword and one hand for conjuration.

I've found that the key is to find something to hide behind or under.  Cast your conjuration and let the atronach (or whatever) do the heavy lifting until the dragon lands and then go melee on him.  Or, use a bow and duck and cover when able.  Patience is key- a good dragon fight can take 5 or 10 real time minutes.

But my question is to PE:
I'm thinking of restarting Skyrim.  I've tried this random start mod which spawns you somewhere randomly and also gives you basic kit.  My question is what you are doing to keep Skyrim fresh and interesting.  I've completed the main quest and DLCs twice now, so figuring out what to try in Skyrim with a new character is eluding me.

Just as advice has been given, you want to find something to hide under OR not stay still. Keep an eye on the dragon. I never bothered with archery though I carried a bow and would maybe let loose a shot or two at it. It moved too much when airborne and I was a bad shot so I never stuck with it.

Usually I'd play an Orc with a warhammer. When the thing landed I'd simply run up to it and start doing the mighty blow thing (holding down the mouse button) until Stamina gave out, then just keep swinging. In the early stages the dragon would usually take off again so it meant more dodging and hiding until it landed again. Later in the game I found I could take out the dragon in two or three swings with a mastercraft warhammer (which IIRC did 150 damage a swing).

I just started to tinker with it again as an Imperial and not sure if I'm going to try one-handed weapons. I just can't resist the warhammer as it seems that it's the most powerful melee weapon in the game!

While that's the most powerful single weapon, it doesn't put out the most damage. Any dual-wield will crank out more damage per second; my experiments on swings per minute, assuming equivalent skills in light swords, maces, and axes (so that the experiment wasn't salted by having extra perqs in something), indicated that although the maces were a bit slower than axes which were a bit slower than swords, the superior base damage for a mace plus its advantages vs armor made it the best at damage output.

In other words, two 'small warhammers' will beat one large warhammer in any fight where the target is strong enough to last for a few seconds; but the large warhammer will kill weak things faster if a solid hit can be landed early, because its base damage is obviously higher.

Huh, I never thought about trying to dual-wield maces. Thanks JP, I might give that a try when I run into more of them. Just started a new game and only just now reported in to the Jarl at Whiterun. Doubt I'll get back to it any time soon though.

@Toonces:

For me the game has never really been about the story lines themselves, but the individual encounters. How during my mage play through one of my melee followers got a fireball in the back of the head during every fight because he insisted on getting in my way. Or during the same play through I got the killing blow on Miraak with a lightning from a staff right before he killed me.

Another thing that seems to keep my games interesting is that I don't play optimized characters. A duel mace wielding orc might be the most optimized for damage but I'll do a nord or an imperial to keep things interesting. With my bow wielding assassin I had perk points into just about every category except heavy armor and 2 handed weaponry.

Alternate start mods help, but I normally have to restart a couple of times until I get a start location that fits the back story of whatever character I'm playing. Taking a few months between play throughs helps keep things interesting as well.

Yes, that alternate start mod is really fun....you have no idea where you will start.  Once I was safe on the second floor of an inn in some remote town, the next time I was in a dungeon and was immediately attacked by two bandits before I could get my bearings....died real fast.

How did you guys even get very far in the game, let alone kill dragons, without a stealthy archer type?

Because:

Because heavy armor and a big ass sword works just as well.

T3ndo has finally released Perkus Maximus, his successor mod to as grim Redone. Been really looking forward to this one. Going to hopefully give it a go this weekend.

Dual wielding of anything is uber. I played as a damned high elf but because I could dual wield I could beat dragons and all your moms thought I was cool.

My mother did tell me often that she thought you were cool Gus. But she said that you could only wield it once not twice. :(

Heavy armor, two maces, and stealthy archery works even better.  >:D

And I didn't start out aiming for that. I fully assumed I would be playing some kind of mage (for the sfx), and built a Breton to that spec, since they get an important magic bonus. I ended up barely using any magic.

I've always stayed away from the archer/ranged forms of attack in Skyrim. Much prefer to run in and beat things to death with a warhammer. The Orc character is a perfect warrior for that purpose.

^I loved playing with the warhammer. In Skyrim too.

Anyone read any chatter on the next Elder Scrolls game?

I've tried all kinds of combos but settled on a right-hand one-hand weapon and Firebolt for the left. With the firebolt spell, I don't need a bow at all.

Don't expect anything soon. Bethesda always needs a lot of time to come up with another Elder Scrolls chapter and they are currently trying to patch up the mess that is ESO. Given that recently it was confirmed that ESO is still in the works for consoles, there is simply no time for them to work on any new game in the traditional Elder Scrolls series at the moment I suppose.

That's doesn't mean anything. Considering ESO is actually developed by Zenimax, Bethesdas parent company not Bethesda themselves.

Next Elder Scrolls game is probably a ways out either way. Thankfully Bethesd doesn't try to make them a yearly franchise like so many other de oilers do these days.

There's been a lot of rumors flying around for the last year or two that Fallout 4 is in the works but nothing has been confirmed.

Yeah, that's pretty much the combo I feel comfortable with as well.

I tried that sword + spell combo, but I kept getting my butt kicked. I always dominated with the warhammer so it was hard to succeed with other tactics. Probably just didn't have the patience with it.

It may be because my main chara need further skills, but I although the 2 handed stuff does more damage, they are a lot slower to swing.

Yeah, gotta develop those skills. I guess my mindset is more tuned into just running in and beating something to a pulp instead of jumping around and dancing out of reach while hurling fairy bolts at bad guys.  ^-^

Thinking of doing some Skyrim again.

With minimal mods, but there is one thing that aggravated me in the past.  I'm hoping there's a mod for it.

Is there some kind of friendlier looting mod?

If there's some mod that allows you to loot everything on the ground, near where your character is standing, it would save me some (literal) headache.  Not sure if such a mechanical change is even possible as a mod in Skyrim, though.

Aside from the wider FOV fix, this is about the only thing I would really need.  Having to constantly look down at the ground, and pan the camera about, looking for and clicking on loot, helps promote those damn console-port headaches I get.  Because the ground looks TOO CLOSE to me in most of these console-ported 1st/3rd Person games (plus I'm far-sighted).

Anyone?

No. The only mod you really need is this one.

If your looking for a mod that loots everything for you, I would use Kace Auto Loot (http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/30408/?). If you use SkyUI (which you should be using if your on PC) then you can configure it using SkyUI's MCM. I used to use it but removed it from my list. Found it broke immersion even with the ability to configure it.

Thanks for the link.

While I was hoping for something that could pick up loose items nearby (this seems to just be for bodies/containers), it would reduce the frequency of having to keep looking down.  A little bit.
