Title: EVE Online??
Post by: DeathTouchWilly on May 02, 2013, 10:27:36 AM
Did anyone ever play this game? I read something in Game Informer this month about how one of the prolific players accidentally jumped his capital ship into enemy space and the skirmish escalated into a battle involving 2400 people.

THAT is pretty awesome so the game has peaked my interest. I know it's quite old but it has a ton of subscribers? Any fans? I also like trading on the stock market so the thought of abusing price movements to enrich myself sounds appealing as well. The open-endedness (and ruthlessness) of the game is drawing me towards it.

yeah its great  :)

its the only game I know where players actively has been able to force the Company to change direction and rethink their priority via ingame Means.
its also possible to actively affect the World around you and pretty much do whatever you like.
You have people doing anything from having casinos and banks (which is pretty much the same these days  :)), being traders and manipulate the market. or going out and shoot other pilots if thats your thing.
All the economy is based on players so something like 95% of items in game is made by players

I enjoy reading of the truly dickish exploits of the amoral player base of the game, but playing the game itself is sloooooooooow.

I played it a very long time ago.  7 or 8 years ago?  I know people who still play it.  I can see how it might be pretty interesting, but I think
I'm don't have the attention span to play it.  Judging by my current gameplay, I need something with an obvious military objective to get blown up every few minutes (currently playing, ARMAIII, CLOD, Fall of the Samurai and Red Orchestra 2).

On the other hand EVE does seem to be a worthwhile game.  Even I played it for a week or two years and years ago.

This is the recent battle that was accidentally triggered and eventually dragged in over 3,000 players

I don't play EVE, but I do sometimes like reading the stories of game events.

I was in the beta and have played it on and off over the years.  I absolutely love it, I think it's a remarkable game and an utter joy to play.

HOWEVER.  It's also the biggest time-sink of them all.  You have to devote a lot of time to it to get the best out of it, and I just can't do that.  Every month the newsletter arrives in my inbox and every month it takes a real effort of will not to subscribe again. :)

I have posted about EVE before.
The short version is that I have a deep love for it, but I always end up quitting due to lack of focus.
EVE gives you what you put in and being in a decent Corp is a must for completing greater deeds.
If you do want to solo, then you need to have a strong focus and will. The game is slow.

I have never seen a community more engaged, though. They are truely an amazing bunch!
And with the recent graphical updates the game looks absolutely stunning as well.

QuoteIn the Battle of Asakai, 717,033,768,274 ISK worth of ships were destroyed -- or $24,921.30, converted to US currency. Let that figure sink in for a second.

LOL!

I, too, occasionally think about reactivating my sub for Eve but I usually only putter around doing missions & salvaging scrap from mob ships' debris for isk.  Gets pretty repetitive.

I just recently cancelled my subscriptions to EVE. I found myself only logging in to renew skills timing out. It isn't that I don't absolutely love the game, it's the best out there, I just don't have the time to play it properly. You must be able to play at least 20 hours a week to make it work. I was into manufacturing and marketing and couldn't sustain long term (years) the time I needed to keep my business running smoothly. The market is so dynamic and the devs throw a wrench into it on occasion with gameplay changes, one has to constantly adapt. One must adapt in combat as well, it seems as if the devs are constanly tweeking ships and systems.

Alright I downloaded the 2 week trial last night and started my space empire!

That was dumb... it's a weeknight.

8 hours later I have a pretty good feel for the basics (and I'm at work pretty much without sleeping...). As an absolute newbie there are volumes of information to absorb. Coming from Wargames I know how to give games their due time so the 8 hour investment didn't bother me. I guess the only con I'd gripe about has already been mentioned: the game is slow and given its scope I am afraid I may not have enough time during the week to truly enjoy the full experience. At the end of the two week trial I'll probably be faced with the dilemma of making EVE the only game I play seriously (or play 75% of the time) or dropping it entirely so I can continue to spread the gaming wealth across many other titles. Decisions decisions. This game may have everything I need to get truly addicted to.

The UI is amazing though. You can tell they've put years upon years of development into making the UI intuitive and easy to use. That I picked up almost immediately and given the number of windows you're opening and closing - that's important.

Hey for the retired EVE players you mind signing on one last time to dump your cash and assets on to me?  ;D ;D ;D

I thought the Eve UI was easy.  It's just basic left- and right-click Windows functionality throughout the whole thing.

The learning curve comes from the wide range of goods & the varied uses for all the specialized chip equipment, classes, etc, and being dropped off in the deep end of the sandbox after a stretch of tutorial missions that only teach you the basics.

Haha, otherwise known as "can I have your stuff?"  I'd gladly give you mine if you paid for me to sub for the month...however if you were prepared to do that you may as well just buy a PLEX and sell it on the market for mucho ISKies.  I don't have anything of particular value anyway...a battleship, an interceptor, a couple of battlecruisers, probably quite a lot of cruisers, frigates and destroyers and a few Iterons.  I used to have the special edition Gallente shuttle but sold it for a LOT of ISK. :D

Not much else...maybe a few blueprints (it's been so long I can't remember).  Probably a load of salvage I haven't bothered to do anything with.  Nothing you can't get just buying and selling a PLEX.

You really need to get into a decent player corp to learn all the ropes. thankfully there are many corps that take in newbies and teach them the ropes.

Yeah.  Even more so than other MMOs, you gotta be in an active Corp.  I never found a decent casual one.

There are "workshops" held to teach specific facets of the game.  I recall dropping in on one of those chat channels and taking some notes.  I believe it was about exploring wormholes or something.  It's stuff like this that gives it a learning curve, but at least there are people willing to hold such Q&A sessions to help others learn.

There's a corp called Eve University - I assume it's still active - who took it upon themselves to take in newbies and teach them the ropes.  Apparently it's quite an experience; you get to learn every aspect of the game, and soon find yourself part of a roaming warband, learning how to fight in low-sec space.

I've been mulling over re-subbing for the past several days.  I'm in the mood for just this sort of game, and none of the interesting single-player games that have been Kickstarted recently are ready to go yet.

Like others note, though, it's SUCH a time sink.  I really don't have the time, and like Nef I've never found a good casual guild.  Maybe we should start one?

Well, I sucked it up and resubbed.  Played my old character awhile yesterday, but I think I'm going to start fresh with an explorer-oriented toon.  Probably more solo options that way.

Doesn't it take awhile (& a chunk of isk) before your character is trained up enough to explore wormholes?

I think that's probably just about anything in Eve.  Which is why I ended up back on my old character after creating the new one and getting a sense that it was going to take awhile before I could do anything interesting.

Not that my original character is much better!

not really. you can get into good pvp in about 1 week if your in corp.
pve can be done from day 1 but ofcourse it will take time to be able to do the harder ones.
Wormholes takes a while to get into especially if your solo as Theres a ton of support skills you need to train just to move around there in relative safety

I tried Eve once a while ago but like others have said I just did not have the time to properly commit to the game.  It is definitely not a casual game.  And then there is the learning curve...

My problem is that I've read so much about people being rat bastards in Eve that I'm very, very leery of everyone. Combine that with not wanting to get into the same feeling that Corp/Guild activities turn into a second job because you *have* to show up to stuff to be a good Corp/Guild member, and I'm having a devil of a time finding a Corp.  I'm also not keen on the idea of being in a Corp with a bunch of 17 year-olds.

Any time this weekend I wasn't playing Eve I was looking around for a decent single player alternative.  There just isn't anything of the scope or the non-twitch approach, the ship variety, the exploration, or the graphics as Eve. Why does every space sim out there park you in a dinky single seat fighter and then expect you to believe that you're going to cover light years over the course of months crammed into a small cockpit?

People like to hold up X3TC or X3AP as "Eve Offline," but having played close to 200 hours of those games I can tell you they aren't.  It turns out the to me at least Eve is still a better SP experience than any other SP Space Sim on the market today.

I'm really hoping the Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous change the situation.  I think I'm going to give Vega Strike a try tonight, but I'm not optimistic.

I agree - these are also the biggest issues I have with Eve.

It resembles more of a job than a hobby, with many Corps.  My own MMO guild has never officially moved over to it because of the "rat bastard" stories.  Finding a similarly minded & mature corp/guild, that isn't run like the Gestapo, has never been as easy as I'd hoped (in any MMO) and the task seems overwhelming in Eve.

I just logged into EVE and was reading a dev blog about the changes in the upcoming "expansion". For goodness sake I actually felt anxiety over the changes. Every couple of years they stir the pot per say of game mechanics, then hours upon hours and days upon days... months upon months of time investment are upended, sometimes for the better, but most often at a disadvantage to the status quo. I used to get this kind of anxiety jumping through null sec gate camps loaded with a billion isk worth of cargo, now I get it when CCP announces an expansion.

This is probably because the EVE community is rather small, but its core of players is very VERY dedicated to the game.
They don't see it as a job at all. They just love the game like nothing else and many bigger Corps work accordingly.
Still, there are quite a few smaller, more casual, Corps out there with good sense of cameraderie. You just have to look a bit harder.

For me, EVE isn't very well suited as a solo player. I really think being in a (even a small) Corp elevates the gameplay significantly, but of course that is personal.

And yeah, the changes coming in the summer expansion do look stellar! But I'll have to restrain myself. I KNOW I do not have enough time for EVE at this point in time. :)

Absolutely.  Being in a corp utterly transforms the game, to such a degree that I couldn't imagine playing it solo - and this is coming from someone who generally prefers to solo in MMOs.

Hey Greybriar I'm actually poor enough in this game to ask if don't want your stuff and  you're SURE you won't  play again I'll take it.  ::) Here's some advice from a coworker when I told him I was playing EVE:

•   If it's in local chat, ignore it, it's a scam.
•   If someone insists you open a trade window with them, it's a scam.
•   If it's a contract that someone's posted in chat, it's a scam.
•   Corp Recruitment - If you have to pay a fee to join it's a scam.

LOL. Good points.

But please.. don't be afraid of scams too much. The internet seems to have countless of stories about the EVE community being a vile bunch of backstabbers.
In my years of playing the game I have only once come across a scammer (which was so obvious is was laughable). You should not be afraid to start playing just because of those stories.

My subscription has already been cancelled so even if I were sure I wouldn't play EVE again I couldn't give my stuff away. Sorry. Good tips by the way.

I saw two instances of a member of a corporation in EVE betraying his corporation. The first time it was by someone who had been a trusted member for years and he caused his corporation to lose its base and everything its members had worked for since the early days of the game. The second time was when an officer in a relatively new corporation sold everything the corporation owned. The fact that I couldn't trust anyone in EVE was the main reason I quit the game.

I do enjoy this game, despite repetitiveness.  Hopefully I can expand on my character's skillset & funds enough to expand my operations.  ;D
Title: Re: EVE Online??

EVE is diverse enough that repetitiveness doesn't have to be a problem. It can be so with new characters or specialized characters that don't have multiple skill sets. Once you train up a character there is so much to do it's crazy.

Oh damn.  I had forgotten that I'd already worked my way up to running Level 3 security missions in my Amarrian Harbinger-class battlecruiser.  :D

Unfortunately, I'd forgotten which of my two characters was the main one and just happened to claim all my leftover promo items and log in with the last one to be logged in.  WRONG!  I just dumped two gift ships into my lowly alt's ownership.  ::)  Oh well.. at least I'm closer to some bigger fish than I had previously recalled.  ;D

The wormhole exploration is one thing I'd especially like to work up to but it's not something you just load up & do without plenty of research & training.  Not to mention getting efficient at firing probes and localizing points of interest takes practice (and money of course).

There was some smaller stuff I haven't really spied, but I also still had a small Level 2 Frigate and some special Cruiser that had bonuses for every weapon type.   The latter one looked interesting but I dunno how practical it was.

I believe some of those things may have been left over from years ago..

I don't play EVE, but I do sometimes like reading the stories of game events.

That is pretty epic. A couple of things stand out.

First, the author's comparison to WWII is off base.

QuotePilots called in their corporations to help out, and then entire alliances began to show up. PL is a part of the HoneyBadger Coalition, and they decided that they would also rally their forces to the fight. Something like this can be a good excuse to blast someone you don't like. If anyone had a grudge against someone, this was a good time to join the opposing side. It's sort of like how everyone got involved in World War II.

However, in searching the document, someone called Startyde noticed the error, too. That more aptly describes WWI.

Second thing I noticed is that in this battle, the attackers are the ones who lost. I'm pleased to see that warping into the heart of an enemy empire is a bad idea. Heh.

There was some smaller stuff I haven't really spied, but I also still had a small Level 2 Frigate and some special Cruiser that had bonuses for every weapon type.

That's a good haul!  They'll both be great for fleet engagements.

I bought the special edition that came out a couple or three years ago.  The only decent in-game item I had was a special edition shuttle.  Apart from a different colour it was identical in every way to other shuttles, so I sold it.  I think people were paying around 60,000,000 ISK for them!

I'm starting to really get the hang of things. I've since joined a mining corporation and have been running mining ops with them. A dozen or so people in lo sec space - everyone has a role to fill and with teamwork you make bank and have fun in the process. This game is something special I think.

The only thing that irks me is my "To Play" list is just gonna get longer because of this diversion into EVE.  ;D

This game sounds like fun but I refuse to get involved in something where I don't feel I can trust folks.

I believe in the kindness of strangers, but there are enough reports of backstabbing to give me a clear picture that I wouldn't like this game. No sense investing time in it just to find out there's an asshole out there looking to grief me.

I've just been running missions & salvaging in hi-sec space so I don't have to worry about griefers blowing me up all the time.  You can still do okay playing it the safe.

I don't really plan on going to lo-sec unless it's in a group activity or I have a good plan as to what I'm gonna do there.  Thus far, I've had no need to.

Backstabbing happens but really its blown out of all proporsion on the various websites.
Find a good laid back corp and you will be fine

Yeah, the backstabbing is usually between corps and alliances.  I haven't personally witnessed it once.  There are plenty of ways you can shield yourself from it, and if you're sensible you'll be fine.

But the money can be so good in nullsec! I haven't run many but occasionally I roll with a group that's got far better gear than I. We run wormhole gas mining ops which can bring in millions in short order.

Problem is occasionally a half dozen ships will decloak as soon as you finish mining - they'll annihilate you and take your hard-earned stash. The cut throat nature is part of the game and, frankly, no matter what you play - if it involves other humans there will be plenty of assholes...

Indeed there is. Never. Trust. Anyone. In. EVE.

That's pretty much what I've been doing, too.  We should figure out how to meet up Nef.  Maybe we can work out this exploration thing.

That's actually the kind of stuff I wouldn't mind participating in, for nullsec.  Wormhole exploitation, for example.  Group ventures.

It's just that 1) I'm flying solo right now until I find a Corp, and 2) Flying through low and null sec solo is just a deathwish via gate camp from what I understand.  Considering I'm still only flying Level III (maximum) missions in a BC, I'm fine with working up my faction standings while pulling in a small but steady income doing so.  Up until I've trained and figured out how to do some fancier stuff, anyway.

Heh, how on Earth are you not being shot down while wandering around null sec in a battlecruiser?  I can only imagine it's your political neutrality that's saving you. :D

No, I'm in Hi-Sec.  You must've understood me all backwards.  ???

I don't plan on going to low or null sec until I'm doing a fleet activity, or I'm wealthy enough & feel like jacking around (and dying).  Solo'ing there is just a good way to die and lose what you're flyin.

I'v been playing EVE on and off since 2005. Started as a miner, but shifted my focus to trading after I found out that playing the market is far more profitable and secure. Losing too many Hulks to gankers in hisec was too much for me. Don't get me wrong. I love the fact, that losing your ships is possible no matter where you are. There are ways to defend yourself and I neglected them. Entirely my fault.

I love small scale pvp in EVE. But it's hard to come by. Most times I wasted my nights roaming around in my Rifter, Jaguar and Wolf, without getting any action at all. The few times something actually happened were awesome though.

I actually just joined a pretty solid mining corp. Are you interested in mining ops? We run around 6 or 7 guys - bunch of retrievers and covetors with one or two orcas to pick up the jetcans. Payout for an hours work is in the 10 mil range. It's not great but it's fun to cooperate and take out rats together, mine an asteroid belt into oblivion, and then move along.

We're based out of Stegette which is med-sec space but it's pretty safe there. Search for Skord in the corps panel and we should come up.

Oh if anyone wants to add me and run ops together my character name is Raktak Takrak - just mention grogheads in your email.

I just don't have any interest in mining.   :-\

This will probably just be one of my usual 1-month subs.  A flight of fancy once I realize how much time it sucks down.  Time that I actually notice.
