Hi - my first post, although i post on wargamer also but i have had a few posts there which just fall away with no reply.
so i will start afresh with some other questions and welcome if anyone can answer them or not -
I ve heard that Field of Glory is a great tabletop game but are the pc games at Matrix good? and will there ever be the Napoleonic Era game.
However what i really really really wish would be made would be a Napoleonic Era game that had the operational strategy of Campaigns on the Danube with its excellent fog of war and then also tactical battles which are not just an afterthought. The game Napoleon in Italy looks like it might be kind of what i am after though i wish the 1813-1814 period could be done (a period skipped over in the main campaing of Napoleon Total War)
Anyhoo, am i alone in thinking that there still isnt a serious wargame done since Wargamer 1813 that attempts this? One gets some great tactical games on one hand and then great grand strategy games on others but nothing to combine the two. (sorry, i think Crown of Glory might do this, but its tactical battles dont look detail at least from screenshots or am i incorrect in this regard)
I guess i am asking here in case someone may be able to point out something thats in the works. I had read that there was going to be a followup to campaigns on the danube but nothing ever eventuated.
Fortunately, i am playing the massive 353 turn leipzig battle with Tillers Leipzig game and that is so enormous and thrilling in just the manage to move long columns of armies and groups to places where i am speculating the enemy may appear in a hundred turns time. This is so enormous for me that it almost answers my desire but i guess the grand strategy component that led to the Voelkerschlacht is still absent.
I can't help you on the Napoleonic front, but with respect to Field of Glory, every single post I've ever seen regarding the series is that the AI is not good. It is a great MP game, but single player is ultimately unsatisfying.
I've been eyeballing it for years, but have yet to pull the trigger. If it goes on sale during these little sales Matrix has going on I may just get it anyway. I'm not very good at wargames so the AI is probably just right for me!
well i am also not great with wargames, but i do want an AI (in current games at least i see no excuse for having bad ai) which will punish me for my mistakes form strategies based on historical doctrines and accounts - thanks for the info. I will disregard it for the present time.
Field of Glory has very basic AI. Multiplayer is great though.
I have it but I'm not into it as I can't seem to grasp some of the intricacies of the tabletop rules.
Crown of Glories: Emperor's Edition tactical battles are detailed and the AI isn't too shabby. They don't have men sprites just the blocks that form lines, box, ect...it's a good game that you can scale the level of complexity on the Strategic level to suit your needs. Unfortunately for you it was just on sale a few weeks ago, so it'll carry the normal price right now.
Field of Glory is not a good single player game unfortuantely.

Field of Glory really shines as a multiplayer game. It also has several expansions which are good.
The single-player game is designed to familiarize the player with gameplay. Don't expect the AI to do much more than basic stuff.
Welcome Agath. I've only played Napoleon Total War and that almost doesn't count as there is no operational level to it and not a lot of strategic level management either. But it can be fun and a real challenge at times and focuses mostly on the war and battle side of the era. My hat's off to you for even attempting Tillers giant effort at Leipzig. There are smaller and more recent campaigns using the same engine from Tiller. The 1814 campaign looked good to me.
Thanks all, i think crown of glory may be the answer in terms of what it combines together. I had read a review which said the tactical battle just felt like a boardgame, which sounded as if they were too simplified but looking them up on youtube now, they look satisfiably detailed. Perhaps te reviewer only played the basic battle resolution screen which looks more like stratego - if crown is like FoF
Campaign Leipzig is absolutely thrilling. What i enjpy most is that all the division, corps army and such leaders can be selected and the the units under their command highlighted so i can minimise detachments which can easily occur as the trains of forces snake their way along the roads to leipzig and may often meet and slowly have to cross a bridge or such. The game makes it very easy for one to move all the units that are in the same group by just selecting one of the units and holding the alt key when selecting a destination hex, the group will then seek to form an orderly column and will use roads where possible . It works well also to just run the leader unit through a tangled blobs of units and the units under him will attach themselves automatcally like a magnet. There is a certain small pleasure one gets from forming up nice mobile columns out the palaver of multiple corps that coincided in one area.
I am about 13 turns in and can just play it in the background at my leisure while at work in breaks and quieter moments.
The coalition forces who i am up against are just now coming into range of some cannon i hastily unlimbered on the road to Halle which they have taken. Its hard to know though what the ai will do. I havent looked up the exact battles details but i know at least to expect the larger army from the south ( well, from the screen bottom) and i will keep my pioneer sappers in leipzig near the bridges in case much later if or when the allies force me to retreat, i can hopefully repair bridges if they blow them up with artillery - though i imagine if allied guns get that close i have probably lost the battle. This though is just the 16th, and the there were battles on subsequent days, so i dont know what kind of conclusion to expect
Sounds like COG:EE may be down your alley.
I recall hearing grumbling about some bugs left in the game, however. Wargamers generally tend to love it despite the warts.
I've never picked it up because of the limited screen resolution (and price of course). I probably would've picked it up while on sale but money was tight at the time.
If you like an AI challenge, then check out any of AGEOD's (now Matrix/Slitherines) titles. They are quite different from many wargames where you micromanage the details of combat. Here you are the Commander in Chief. You tell units where to go, but your subordinate commanders fight the actual battles for you. Quite realistic in many respects. :)
thanks - i have gotten napoleons campaigns and march of the eagles which is the sequel if i am not mistaken - i want to play these definitely, but so many games so little time!
Tactics help:
Okay things are starting to interesting now - into turn 14 and the allied armies a now making more contact and they are using their infantry in alot of skirmisher formations - which just get in the way and i guess do their job of shielding the main force. What is the best way to get around this? and how does one best use skirmishers themselves -
I wouldn't really call March or Eagles a sequel. rather a stripped down military version of NA.
Oh right, well hpoefully March of the Eagles at least has better looking units. I had a go just a Napoleons Ambition to see if it was good, but the units looked ahistorical although they are not critical to the game, but also the options for the types of units to create looked limited, i didnt find it too interesting.
I am though satisfied i think with the numerous napoleonic era games i have to play at the moment and i want to get around to trying out Strategic Command WW1 later too
Agathos, your interest and excitement in Campaign Leipzig are so very refreshing. Most of us groggy Grognards flinch at the prospect of such huge campaigns.
Since you like this so much, have you ever considered doing an AAR of your Leipzig campaign? On the home page of Grogheads , you may note that Thursdays are devoted to AARs. One by you on Leipzig would be quite unique.
Oh, and if you are leaving the Guard Engineers in Leipzig, remember that they blew the bridge way too early in real life, trapping a goodly amount of troops and generals on the wrong side of the river.
That would be a great idea, though i am not sure how to an AAR and what to to show. This would be quite an undertaking as the game is bigger than anything i have ever attempted before, but i think also because of the way in which Tiller has designed its possible to focus on the various smaller battles - its like playing several wargames at once.
The other difficulty i have with writing this all down is that that i am playing this game at my workplace (which is probably bad enough) but my day job is a humdrum of responding to email enquiries for a health insurance company (not my preferrd place to be but i try and make sure i can give the best service i can and try to help get claims paid as best possible - fortunately in Australia health insurance is more heavily government regulated and so companies dont just rort members, there is an obligation to pay claims, although sometimes invoices and forms can be a mess to handles so i try and help - i mention this because it appears that health insurance runs differently in other countries)
anyhoo, point being i dont know how i would be able to write it all down and also it may be a year before i finish this.
Things are getting slower now with the game in my decision making as now at turn 15 the allies as now more of the allied army comes in to view. Trying to get some vantage points to see though weather is overcast and limited to 50 hexes, but i can still see the parallel rows of allied artillery that are coming up from the south.
As the french i have alot of infantry but not a great deal of artillery - at least not many sections wholly dedicated to it, i have cavalry but perhaps less than the allied forces.
perhaps i can put up information here and there as the game progresses and screenshots
how do i put screenshots in the body of an thread? - i hit the image insert button i get these "[img] [/img" things what do i do with them?
also i was directed to some modded graphics for tillers games and i have made a copy of the game with the modded graphics as well as a copy with the original. I like the modded terrain as it looks more autumn but i prefer all o ftillers figures and icons as they are easier to see - can i just have the modded terrain but keep everything else original?

That would be a great idea, though i am not sure how to an AAR and what to to show.
Here are some AARs to give you an idea as to structure: http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?board=25.0
In essence there are two kinds of AARs: a blow-by-blow recount (turn-by-turn) and an RPG-like narrative. Both work. They can be combined. Neither is better than the other. Do whatever you like.
As for embedding images in the forums you'll want to have an external hosting site like Photobucket. It's free and you'll likely be able to host more images than you can imagine. We don't get millions of hits so I have yet to run out of hosting space/bandwidth with them. Once you upload an image to Photobucket you have four choices: Email & IM, Direct, HTML, and IMG. Copy the Direct link and paste it between the IMG tags. It's that easy.
well i will try and do this - i am playing it and hopefully wont take too long, but am saving images and referencing the turn and noting what i was doing - i will probably have enough images of the map screen at the end - definiteyl over 300 that one could put them together like a flip book to see how it all played out.
Even i cant make a good AAR all the maps screens will be interesting to see how it all unfolded
A couple of hints will help.
First, don't be afraid to skip over stuff. If you have several turns where nothing of importance happens, there's no need to chat about every detail.
Most important is explaining the scenario, what you're thinking, and what you want to accomplish. The narrative of the AAR should periodically assess how you're doing. Did your plan work? Did it backfire? Is it scrapped as new events unfolded? Those are things readers love to see in an AAR.
So usually I take a lot of time in the beginning to discuss how it's going. I usually describe in detail the first few turns. Then I tend to fast-forward through the middle only focusing on really important events, like breakthroughs, loss of key units or the destruction of key enemy units. Achievement of mid-game goals, etc. You don't necessarily have to describe the results of combat for 500 units on the map. That can drive you crazy. Instead think about the big picture and how things are going.
thank you for that info - will help me in think how to write up the account

What is new in this version? Plenty of new scenarios and game settings both in Single and Multiplayer! A completely new and enhanced UI! A greatly improved AI! A full game replay system! Countless fixes and improvements to the data files!
This update will be released for free to all those who already own Field of Glory on the 7th of July!
This is cool. Bit of a surprise, after thinking this FOG update had vaporized awhile back.
AI improvements? Hrmm. Must be trying to get me to finally buy expansions for it. ^-^
Some photos here...been a long time since I played but not sure it looks vastly different

This is great news. I'd long thought this was vapourware. O0
UI looks nice. The units are still the same 2D sprites.
If it's now Unity, they should make a tablet version. :D
To be honest I thought the units looked more pixelated than the original. I found the new version much less user friendly, and much less attractive. Double moves seem to be gone, lists are darker and not so readable, and setting up a new game is more fiddly.
Maybe it's better under the bonnet, but I felt it was a bit of a let down. I admit that I didn't play more than a couple of tester games, but have uninstalled FoG2 and gone back to the older version. Maybe I had developed higher expectations, given how long this has been in development, but on first impressions I find the new version a disappointment compared to the original. :(
I just hope the new army books remain compatible with the older version.
Seems like first day of release that in some ways might be step backwards.....no terrain info when over hex, lack of some keyboard shortcuts for scrolling and someone indicated missing some unit photos and commented graphics may be a little worse. And editor not included yet. I can't download until next week to try myself. Dev did mention addressing things in future update. Just seems odd that initial release might be missing some things.
Hmm that's a pity.
Very first thought on launching a scenario is the unit graphics are horrendous. Why would you re-write it but not improve the unit graphics?
I think I know what happened. Unity is actually a 3D engine. To make 2D games from it, you just need to fix the camera viewpoint but all objects are made 3D first. But since they re-used all the old art assets which are apparently 2D sprites, it didn't render well in Unity. Maybe a bit Low res for the engine too.
But that's just my specualtion.
Unity will pave the way for a tablet version of this game.
I think Jomni is right about the problems encountered in the unity conversion. I can understand the use of unity to create a cross platform rendition of the game, but for existing PC users the port seems less functional and aesthetically much more ugly than the original game. I realise the port was a one man effort, done part time, but it reflects this on release.
I suppose if I had not already been playing the original, I would have been less picky, but as Grim Reaper suggests FoG2 should have been an improvement, and not feel like a beta in comparison to what we already had. FoG is one game that is a real "go to" game for me, so I hope for the gaming community both versions will be offered rather than just FoG2, which for me - at least so far - is the poor man's version of FoG.
I'm happy to keep an open mind, depending on what the new developer does with it, but in the current release state I find it less aesthetically pleasing, less functional, and less user friendly in comparison to the original.
FoG2 is available as a free game to existing owners of FoG, which is a rational marketing decision, as I see it to migrate the very active FoG community over to FoG2. It is still early days, and while many in the FoG community - myself included - will welcome the new Army books, it remains to be seen what the general reaction will be to the new re-interpretation of the game, as well as what any future update will achieve. In the meantime, I just hope that the new army books are compatible with the old FoG, but I suspect they are not.
New add ons? Not compatible. The sad part is Old FoG is discontinued. And the old multiplayer server will be shut down. Some are actually sad that they cannot go back to Old FoG and settle for something that is a work in progress.
Hope the devs will take all these customer issues seriously.

I have just tried the new edition and just have to say how disappointed i am. It's a work in progress and it doesn't look 1/2 as good as the original game. They should have improved the original game instead...really bad.

That is bad news. Given the new product's current state, the old one seems to me far more polished, indeed a superior product. I play it a lot multiplayer, as the AI could be much better than it is. For me it is a sad day for fans of the game. :'(
I suspect that the changes the dev (not devs) will make will be fairly limited now that the game is 'finally' out. It has taken him a few years to get to where we are now. I applaud his efforts to create this, but in its present state the release is way too early. I suspect in part this is because the community were widely regarding it as vapourware, and having seen it, I wish it still was because of the abandonment of the older version. IMHO, this is all about cross platform sales, with the quality of the port being very much a secondary consideration. I have come to expect a high standard from Slitherine over the years, but this port in its current state falls very much short of the mark.
I hope Slitherine will review its policy on this game, listen to the fanbase, and reinstate the old game as an alternative. I'd prefer it to be renamed as a cross platform alternative to FoG, leaving the existing servers for the active FoG community. I have no doubt that they would continue buy the DLC army books as well. I certainly would.

I picked this up a while ago and can only echo previous comments. As far as selling it goes - massive oversell from matrix - needed more work.

Yeah, they retained the old pictures. But I think Unity needs more hi-res ones to render better. The dev have pointed out that the Unity version allows for a higher level of zoom and this is what shows the pixelation. Obviously, they didn't have the time to remake those and that's a lot based on the army list and add-ons.
^^ And yet the original FoG with its lower res pictures/textures just looks so much better.
Played my first game after not playing for so long. So I don't mind the pixelated graphics. Clearly the UI needs improvement. The text window and buttons are very big. Probably preparing for the tablet release. Would like for them to scale it down in the PC version. The AI, did it improve? I did not notice and find it easy to beat. This is one of those reasons why I stopped playing FoG. And I suck at multiplayer here compared to Pike & Shot. DAG mode is not entirely as fun as Pike & Shot's skirmish mode.
The detailed combat prediction needs work. It needs to use normal language and be very descriptive as oppose to abbreviations. Pike and Shot / Sengoku Jidai is a good example.

How do you change facing?
Seem to remember you click on the unit and hold down and a white tringle appears which you can move around to change the facing. Unless they removed that as well.
Slitherine needs to wake up about the tablet market. It's dying. Sales of iPads and Android tablets are way, way down from previous years. Dell has stopped selling Android tablets entirely. It turns out that they aren't functional enough to be laptop replacements and they're too big to be phone replacements. People aren't buying them like they used too.
So, stop crippling game engines so you can sell them on tablets. It's a short-term boost in sales (I know they've had some past success doing this) at the expense of long-term viability of the game. What they've just done to FoG is going to seriously damage the game's community of players.
It's a shame that this port is so unfinished. I was just starting to get back into playing this system, and I'm not going to bother, now. I had some interest in the new army books, but again, no sale.
I have not read to-much back up in the thread, but I just got the new FOG 2, and I found I needed to be online to input my serial, this is a sad day for me as I wanted to be autonamouse and use my games on old PCs not connected to the net, and don't have current antivirus, correct me if I'm wrong but it definatly seemed like I had to be connected to the server to enter my serial.

Hmm. I accepted a MP challenge using armies from a DLC I don't have. I can actually play it. :P
On another note, I am also fighting a MP game with an Ancient army vs a Medieval one.
The AI is still not very good. Some Slitherine forum users call it a potato. Not like Pike & Shot which takes into account terrain and POAs to make sensible decisions. Solo play is still definitely not fun in FoG. To make things worse, the handicap settings don't work too.
I don't know why people keep calling it "Field of Glory 2".
This is not Field of Glory 2.
It's an update to Field of Glory 1.
Yes. I confirm that it is not FoG2
From the discussions in the official forum, besides it being an update to switch back-end engines, seems that it would be hard pressed to call this even an update/upgrade since so far most comments are about things that no longer exist. things that don't work in this version, and graphics being a step back.
People are expecting too much I guess.

I am not going to complain on the Slitherine forums (made one comment) as i am not a huge player of the game (actually i am playing my first pbem right now....mostly because i have too many games and Field of Glory is still a new game to me ::)). It's surely hard for the guys who are working on it (Dan?) and i feel sorry for them. It seems however that the usually good beta testing from Slitherine failed in that case.

I am thinking it was reasonable to expect that minimally all the existing game features would still be there plus not introducing a ton of new issues that supposedly didn't exist in the original version....I know its free and no product is ever bug free, but so far doesn't seem off to a good start for an "update"....maybe with time it will get there, but while that is happening, hopefully they will continue to fully support the old version for those players who do enjoy it already...in the end really doesn't impact me personally since I stopped playing a long time ago, although I thought with the update that I would get back into it and even purchase more content.....but not going to do that now.

You do not need to be online to enter your serials. You do (clearly) need to be online to register your serials on the server.
Cheers

Yeah agree. There's a long way to go for this to be called a real upgrade.
I'm okay with the idea that it's a move to a new engine, and not an upgrade. But there needs to be feature parity with the game that it's replacing before Slitherine turns off the old PBEM servers - which I understand they've already done.
Unfortunately, Slitherine adopted a "get stuffed" attitude a few years back with FoG support (not even answering support emails for a product that was still for sale?). They've declared that the new Unity version is it for this game. They're taking the stance that they didn't get any beta feedback (despite numerous beta testers indicating that they did, indeed, point out the problems with FoG Unity over and over).
There's a single developer working on this who is clearly part-time and clearly struggling - and honestly from some of his responses on the Slitherine forums I'm not sure he's a wargamer (he hasn't seen the need for mousing over a square to tell you what the terrain type is, for example). He doesn't seem to have much UI development experience. He's content to release a game that uses programmer-speak for important settings.
I'm not optimistic.

yep, I have no issue with the move to a new engine, but certainly should not take the game backwards...have been very little comments from the company or developer, which certainly is telling...no idea why they decided to release like it was...unless they are gearing up to release on the mobile devices to capitalize on some quick revenue.

Going to say you nailed it there...
I've now gone back to the original. I'd have liked to have added the two new army books, but sadly it's not an option, as they are designed for the Unity engine. I really do feel that it was a mistake to release the new update in it's current state. For me it seems several steps backward from what we already had, like an unfinished beta.
Sure it gives a cross platform ability, which is good if you haven't got a PC. But for PC owners, it is not up to Slitherine's usual quality.
I know Slitherine are very aware of the issue, and am I am pretty sure they will reflect on, and respond to the strength of feeling within the FoG community. I remain hopeful that this will have a happy ending.

You do not need to be online to unlock content with your serial numbers.
And it's not FoG2 :P It's FoG Unity.
According to this thread (no idea if all are correct), already 66 items (and growing) identified as possible issues/concerns with the new "FOG Unity" version (since the Slitherine personnel seem to prefer that name, although maybe it should be called "FOG .5") that apparently worked in the original version.....not sure why it bothers me even when I don't have much invested in it, but when a new major update/game is released and very little involvement by the developers and company in the forums, just concerns me and says something about their commitment to it. They have even showed up here twice and selectively responded to one item and preferred to address the name of the update versus all the concerns raised.

If we are being correct, its not FoG Unity, its Field Of Glory Unity, sorry could not resist.

One thing I don't know as I am not an expert if FoG Ancients rules is are these actually WAD and a more faithful interpretation of rules compared to Old FoG. But the dev is quite silent.
If we could get Ancients, Dark Ages, and Medieval versions of Pike & Shot/Sengoku Jidai, I'm not sure I'd even care about this.

This was quite noticeable and in the 6 page thread on their own forums they don't seem to have been any more forthcoming.
I personally haven't played FoG in quite some time but heard about the new version and it got my interest again, then I downloaded it :(
I've been trying to reinstall the original version, got my 1.00 install file, eventually found a 1.81 patch on a patch site but it doesn't seem to be working and locks up on start up.
Guess I'll end up deleting both and just forgetting about it.
Look at this. The real Field of Glory 2.

Very nice!
The old FoG is still available by the way it seems: http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=84&t=73007
That's a cool move O0
As usual a class act from Sitherine.
There is also a rebate if you bought the new DLC, because they are not compatible with the old FOG.
Explanation of the FoG family of products by Slitherine
QuoteField of Glory Ancients & Medieval Wargaming Rules - this was the original tabletop game
Field of Glory Digital - this was the PC/Mac game based on the original rules. It is not a direct adaption and has diverged from the rules in numerous ways to suit the PC.
Field of Glory 2.0 Ancients & Medieval Wargaming Rules - this was an amended version of the Tabletop Rules with adjustments and new features
Field of Glory Unity - this is a reworking of Field of Glory Digital. It is almost a direct replica but with slightly different UI and features and in a code base that could be taken forwards. It uses all the art and data from the digital version.
Field of Glory 2 - this is the project Richard Bodley Scott is working on. It is still based on the tabletop system but has further diverged to make more use of the advantages of the PC. The full feature set is yet to be announced. It is all new in terms of UI & graphics and fully 3D. It is written in the Archon engine.
