I plan to, but I haven't yet. Waiting on Payday and a stubborn fetus...
I did. I've played EU3 but not a lot. I really like the game and plan to play EU4 a lot more. I also like that CK2 games can continue over into EU4. That'll make me want to play CK2 even more!
I'll probably pre-order as well. Soon. Maybe tonight. Maybe after I get myself a Dogfish Head IPA from the fridge...
Not yet, but I probably will.
The best deal can be found at Greenman, where you get a choice of a $10 credit or $7 cash back off the $39.99 price. I just hope they don't run into the issue of not having enough Steam keys as they have on pre-orders in the past.
I tried going back to III in anticipation, but as someone else posted, just couldn't after CK II. There is a demo coming out, and they are shooting for some time in the next week, so if it holds up there will still be time to get in on the pre-order goodness.
Definitely considering it...
I got my ale and then I pre-bought the game on Steam. I got the Extreme Digital version (or whatever it's called). BTW, if you have any other EU games on steam it gives you 10% off! Regular game ends up $35US and extreme is $40. Release date appears to be Aug 13.
I have not pre-ordered yet, but I'm going to. not sure when. Not it any real hurry since it doesn't unlock until the 14th. If it had a pre-order beta I'd do it instantly.
Yes, I preordered. I did like Staggerwing and preordered on Steam..I already had EUIII so got the additional 10% off.
p.s. If you preorder, you can pickup several free DLCs and also a free copy of Crusader Kings II.

Yup, pre ordered here too. :)
I don't like the idea that there are so many small DLCs planned. Are they must-haves?
What the heck, I bought it. :P

I'll likely be pre-ordering sometime this week myself....as for the DLC, there likely will be a ton like CKII, but as we all know they go on sale regularly and if patient, you can really pick them up for close to nothing:)
I haven't been up to date with my CK2 DLCs. :/
For those of you who haven't pre-ordered yet, GameFly has a good deal in getting 20% off the game, cheapest I have seen it (Greenmangaming does offer some cash/credit discount too). For the digital extreme edition, just cost me $35. If you buy the standard edition, will cost you roughly $31. Since it is a steam game, does not really matter where you order from. The pages also indicated fully entitled to all pre-order bonus. No idea how long the discount is available for, unless the title of it implies August 20th, but no idea. Decided to not chance it and picked it up right away:)
USA Code = GFDAUG20
UK Code = GFDAUG20UK
Rest of the world, likely out of luck:)

You enter the code during the checkout process which then takes the 20% off. It is near the last step before submitting the order. Here is an example screenshot using the standard version. Original prices is $39.99, but after code applied it goes down to $31.99.

Going to pre-order today... just trying to decide where from. Was going with GG for the discount and Blue Coins.... but not sure.
PE
Just about pre-ordered from GG today for the 10% off....
But I going to hold off for sale. SDR's HOI AAR made me buy the whole shebang while it was on sale and I think between CiV and HOI III that's about all the time sinks I can handle for a while.
Of course reading all yer reports of playing EU IV will make this a very difficult task. :P
Just remember that I believe the CK2 converter you will get depends on where you pre-purchase. Therefore, if your original CK2 game was from GG, then would have to get it from there. If your original CK2 game was from Steam, then you can pre purchase from any of the steam providers....to the best of my knowledge for steam, Gamefly is still the cheapest.
Just FYI, today they posted the release time.
"The game will go live at 9AM EST, which is about 15.00 in the afternoon Swedish time. (on the 13th of August) "

Posted by Johan today in the developer's diary....can only go by what he says:) Either time I will be at work, so can't play until the night anyway.

Yes, I saw Johan's post. I'm just saying I have never seen a game unlock on Steam at 9AM Eastern time. That's why I would be surprised if Valve made an exception for EU IV.
Maybe he was just referring to the release on GamersGate?

I am pretty sure that regardless where you buy it the game is only available for use on steam. I believe the only difference buying at gamersgate is you get the gamersgate version of the ck2 converter.
My 14 year old just had me pre-order to his ID today.. no discount, cause we bought our EUIIII on GG. He wanted Steam, because that is where our CK2 is from..
I wonder if the convert 'really' cared where you bought it from!

The demo is up on Steam. Will post impressions later, and will also probably pre-order depending on how it runs on my rig (I expect no problems, since CKII runs just fine, but you never know).

Yeah, entering the code doesn't occur until the final step of the process...but prior you can select credit card and other payment types. Was kind of odd....important part is you have it ordered and all ready to go:)

Sample the Feeling of Conquest in the
Europa Universalis IV Demo
Play Your Way with Your Friends Using Steamworks-enabled Modding and Cross-platform Multiplayer
NEW YORK – August 8th, 2013 – Paradox Interactive and Paradox Development Studio today released a demo on Steam for their upcoming empire-building game, Europa Universalis IV, to allow players to take their first steps on the journey towards global domination.
EuropaUniversalisIV_1_Warfare_The_Ottoman_EmpireEuropa Universalis IV, a game that lets you rule your nation with unparalleled freedom in the age of exploration, can now be sampled for free, tasting just a bit of power before the full game is released on August 13.
Paradox also announced that the battle for conquest will take shape exactly as players desire, thanks to support for Steam Workshop for game modifications, and cross-platform multiplayer which will allow rulers to clash with the rivals of their choice across Windows, Mac, and Linux. Both Workshop support and cross-platform play will be included at launch.
Discover what conquest feels like by checking out the Europa Universalis IV demo here (Windows only, English only):
http://store.steampowered.com/app/236850/?snr=1_4_4__104_1
In the demo version of Europa Universalis IV, players can take up the flag of one of four available nations, sampling the trade system as Venice, going to war as the Ottoman Empire, founding new colonies as Portugal, or engaging in shrewd diplomacy as Austria. Demo games will last for 28 in-game years and include an extensive tutorial and hint system. The demo will not include multiplayer capabilities, and please note that the abilities to save & load have been disabled.
Read the full Europa Universalis IV demo description here:
http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?706528-Europa-Universalis-IV-Demo-description
Keeping a long-held tradition of community interaction and support, Europa Universalis IV intends to foster a strong 'modding' community through the support of Steam Workshop. For the first time in the series, players will be able to easily share their customizations to Europa Universalis IV with friends and fans through a central, easily searched repository, where fellow gamers can download and implement mods with a single click.
EuropaUniversalisIV_2_Trade_VeniceIn addition, for the first time ever in a Paradox Development Studio strategy game, multiplayer matches in Europa Universalis IV will be fully cross-platform. Games will function just as if each player were using the same platform, whether they are playing on a Windows, Mac, or Linux computer, for both competitive and cooperative play.
Strategy fans can prepare for conquest by pre-ordering the empire-building game. Anybody who pre-orders Europa Universalis IV will receive all pre-order bonuses, including the recently announced Crusader Kings II save converter and a free copy of Crusader Kings II. Thanks for posting the links. I'm definitely checking it out.
I've only gone through the first set of Basic Tutorials, but I definitely like what I'm seeing so far. Still haven't pre-ordered yet though as I really never put much time in EU III even though I bought all of the DLC for it.
I am interested in the demo but I have never really embraced any Paradox game, and after I try and fail SoM usually calls me an idiot. None of them have been particularly accessible for me and although I love the subject matter and history I never feel confident in what the hell I'm supposed to be doing :/
Gus, you lackadaisical mouth-breathing cunctator!
Now, what are we talking about?
^That precisely.
Preorder EU IV from GreenManGaming and get the 10.00 credit and then preorder Rome Total War 2 and apply the credit to bring it to 39.99.....

For me, EU is the most accessible of all their games. Simple and uncomplicated once you get a hang of the basic concepts.
Some say CK, but for me, CK has so many constraints that's stopping your from being a megalomaniac. I don't consider CK in the same league as EU, HOI, Victoria. It's more of a roleplaying game than a country management game.
Thanks PE. For reference, the last Paradox title I tried was Victoria II. I played for a few days and just didn't get anywhere.
I played about five years as Venice in the demo and really enjoyed the game. I really like the new trade system with sending out light ships to protect your trade routes. The more ships you send, the more trade income you receive. The new production interface is also neat as you can choose which unit to build and then click on any provinces highlighted in green to build the unit there.
This is basically CK2 set in a different time period, right?
Or...what makes this significantly different from CK2 other than the time period covered?
I pulled a Gus move and asked a bunch of questions without doing a single bit of research on my own first. I win! 8)

I daresay CK2 didn't have the Reformation or Portuguese colonies. Then, of course, tech and trade are very different.

You do not run a dynasty in EU. You run a country.
Ok, got it. Not the game for me, but I'm happy for you guys that are stoked for these country-builder games. I'm sure it's going to be excellent! :D

Oh don't get all offended on me. You know this is a typical Gus post:
"Hey guys, I'm thinking about getting into Rise of Flight, but I don't know too much about it. What kind of planes are in it? Do you fly the planes?" And so on... ;D
^Sorry Commander that's just untrue.
Granted I do ask some questions that I could research myself but typically they are a bit more advanced, like 'what type of plane do prefer to fly in RoF and why?' Stuff like that. So I am still offended.
But hey whateva.
I love you, Gus. :)
I love you too, Commander, even if you make me :'(

I'm going to be mature about this one and just not get it. I got all excited and pumped for Victoria 2 and was just left staring at the screen like your avatar. Plus I got tons to play otherwise.

Sounds to me like you've mastered 99% of all Paradox games. Staring at the screen watching the clock move and the AI doing stuff.
Hater
Realist.
Heh. I like Paradox's games, but I have to admit that it does boil down to just that. :)
To be fair the only EU game I gave a real solid try to get into was EUI, years ago. I really tried. Just didn't click with me. I always like the idea of these games but the reality for me is different. Victoria, EU, etc. CK I still have yet to try.
The feature that really got me interested here is the game converter, from CK to EU.
CK2 is definately not a 'watch the clock tick and wait for the AI' type of game. The countless events make you revise a given strategy oftentimes.
The problem is usually with keeping the speed at 1x. Then it becomes boring for long stretches quickly. You just dont have to be afraid to use the speed options.
I suspect this will be the same for EU, but I havent put much time into 3 yet and will now just wait for 4. ;)

I really like CK2 and EU: Rome too. CK2 does give you more to do, but there is still a lot of clock watching for events and characters to develop. I'm not saying they are horrible games by any stretch. They just play much differently then other strategy games.

Well for short periods of time, yeah. But if you do t so anything in CK2 you will find yourself without an heir and having lost al of your lands fairly quickly. Like Distant Worlds, the Ai is there to manage at the micro level. Your job is to manage at the macro level. So you can sit back and watch the AI make micro decisions and it may seem like its playing itself. After awile though, things will go to hell if you don't guide it. That's the beauty. Of course, it ain't for everyone
Well yes, of course I don't actually mean that you don't do anything in these games. But you have to admit, you do spend a lot of time in time compression, just watching the game play. I'm not even complaining; as I said, I like PDS games. I even liked Sengoku!

I would argue that the macro is almost secondary to the mico of character development is some regards in terms of importance of the game. Sure it's a good plan to unit x,y, and z territory to create x, y, or z position, but it the micro of character management that makes it happen.

You also have that for old CK and EU titles.
Interesting. But the only older title I have is EUI.
I finally pre-ordered... I wasn't going to because I can't play for a long while anyhow...but who knows...maybe this Paradox game won't go on sale for awhile, and will make my preorder a good bargain. (hah!)
The demo is very good and it's very tempting to pre-order, but I'm just getting around to finally learning how to seriously play EU III years after I bought the game and all of the DLC.
I have pre-ordered EU 4. I confess. The game series is addicting for me. I think some other wargaming publishers should learn a thing or two from Paradox about how to put together a good looking UI.
Finally pre-ordered. Looking forward to Tuesday.
ill jump in last thing tonight
Still have to play EU3 first!
Couple things I like after playing the demo....
- The map is just awesome.... the shadows, ships, units etc.... very nice!
- New Production Screen/Method.... very nice to click the county you want to build.
- The interface is very clean and easy to navigate
- Trade map mode is very useful and the Trade options of flow
Looks like my other games will get a on-hold status.... glad I finished my latest CK2 game.

I couldn't agree more. I would love to see things liek the changing seasons and map shadows converted back to CK2 (if possible). Even if it was a full paid expansion, I'd still pay for it just for the engine upgrades.

Trade is still the area that confuses me the most. From what I can tell from my limited time playing the demo and watching lets plays, trade will always flow in certain directions. For instance you cannot reverse the flow of trade from the London trade node to the the Amsterdam trade node. I think the goal is to have the most trade in connected nodes and "steer" that trade towards your capital.
I have purchased every version of Europa Universalis that has been released. Due to the number of games on my gaming plate, I have hardly played EU3. By the time I got around to playing EU4, EU5 would be coming out.
So despite the urge I have to buy it, I think I'll pass on EU4 for now. It and all of its expansions/DLC will probably be offered in a compilation pack for less than half price within a year.

That is exactly my thoughts as well. I've only played about 10 hours of EU III even though I've owned it for a number of years.
I broke down and pre-ordered over the weekend. The first time I have ever pre-ordered any game. Thus begins my descent on the slippery slope...
The clincher was definitely the CK2 converter. Sounds fascinating. In fact, playing through the EUIV demo has re-sparked my interest in CK2. Didn't expect to, but I spent my weekend playing hours on CK2, really enjoying it again for the first time in many months.

Trade is probably the most confusing part that requires some additional investigating. But you are right, you can only try to steer the trade towards another zone by sending merchants and increasing your influence in another zone. It appears that while you can do this, it can be difficult.

I think I have a pretty good understanding of trade after reading the manual, spending too much time on the official forum (I can't believe how quickly it went from "OMG -this will be the bestest game EVAR" to "This POS is broken and dumbed down". What a bunch of entitled whiners.), and several hours in the demo.
As I understand it, you only collect $ from trade nodes in which you have provinces. The more provinces you have, the more $ your merchant can collect. In nodes where you don't have a province, you can only steer trade, if the node is within your trading radius. Trading radius can be increased through ideas, expansion, colonization, and perhaps through events. Additional merchants can only be gotten through ideas and events.
The amount you can collect or steer is modified by your trading power. Trading power can be increased through ideas, events, and assigning fleets of small warships to protect your trade routes. I think just building small warships gives a bit of a boost. That's why even in peacetime you should never lower naval maintenance if you are depending on trade, as lower naval maintenance will lower trading power.

Thanks tgb. So you want to steer trade towards nodes you control, then extract money out of that node.
I think setting light warships to patrol a trade route also gives a boost to your trade along that route.
As for the game being dumbed down, I don't think it is. I think its more accessible, in that the transparency to the under lying systems is easier to understand, but from what I can tell so far its still just as complex as any other Paradox game.

I don't feel it is dumbed down either... I think it has been stream lines and easier to get around the UI. I feel like all the core is still there. I am really looking forward to diving into the game as well as Elder Kings mod for CKII!

One other thing I wanted to mention is that I really like the new Monarch Point system. It leads to lots of difficult decisions.
Funny thing is I fired up Warlock and thought to myself... What a $#%$# looking map :P

I have this dream of turning England into the premier continental land power. One where France has been completely wiped from the annals of history. Things like an overseas empire can be done after the European continent is completely subservient to me. ;)
Maybe that was little over the top.....
I may also start as Austria. The Venetians were giving me a hard time in the demo and I want pay pack vs the Venetian AI. >:(
I'm going for Castille with a strong emphasis on religion and exploration. Someone has to bring the True Faith to the heathen savages. Then there's the 7 cities of gold.....Phoenix, Tucson, Las Vegas......
I am going for the Low Countries and sail for Batavia and New Amsterdam.
(Darn, I thought it would be releasing at midnight... still 7 hrs on the clock till release.... argh!)
As usual, I will play China.

Oh Glorious Colonialists, a call to arms has been raised!
Europa Universalis IV has released!
Downloading now. Unfortunately I have to go spend the next 8 hours at work.... >:(
When are we going to do the Grogheads EU IV MP game?
Has anyone who ordered from Gamefly gotten their key? I'm still waiting.

It has... a bit earlier than usual, even. I folded at the last minute and pre-ordered last night (with about 11 hours to go before release).
The wish should be: Hopefully Steam didn't bungle the release up and post the wrong (older) version. That happens with some regularity these days. :o
Looking at Paradox forums, everything seems ok. Many seem to think it is very polished like CK2. Some don't like one change or another but seems to be a smooth release.

...and in the game. ;) RPS are very positive about it in their review: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/08/13/wot-i-think-europa-universalis-iv/ I have only played a bit so far - the map looks lovely - it's nice seeing the little hills symbolising the Pennines running down the centre of England. There also seem to be a lot of options with regards to diplomacy etc. I only hope I can give this title the time it deserves!
Damned release-day DLC. Despite pre-order bonus DLC, there is already separate launch day extras for sale. Notably some 'Star And Crescent' deal with extra muslim events?? ???

Yes - I agree. I will defend Paradox to the hilt, even the fact that their games were, at times, questionably tested on release. However, I really do not like the plethora of meaningless DLC that they plug, leaving you feeling slightly insecure that maybe you are missing out on that little something that takes the game to the next level.

+1 and then some. DLC, 'pay to play,' 'premium content' etc. are quickly becoming a black spot on what is otherwise a Golden Age of computer gaming.
I just hate the nickle-&-dime you approach. But it's here to stay.
The Muslim thingy was a pre-order bonus and should not have to be bought seperately if you pre-ordered. ?
The extra thing I do see, are some buildings.. or pictures of buildings.... or whatever that pack is?
Just in case you guys have questions.... Arumba put out some videos covering a wide variety of topics in a short condensed format videos. Also, his Dwarf Fortress tutorial/LP is excellent as well.... just FYI

The Muslim DLC was included only if you got the digital deluxe edition. I think it only included character portraits and maybe culture building and event images.
You're right.
It's all a bit vaguely named, I discovered; the 'monuments' DLC I mentioned earlier, actually is part of the Call to Arms DLC. Which in turn has been made available for purchase due to popular demand (it was first a pre-order incentive bonus pack).
Do you need to use Steam to start it? Just asking because CK2, Vicky2 and EUIII you don't need to.. So wondering if I have to log into my 14 year old's account when I want to play.. Not a big deal, just a small annoyance.. lol.. like when he logs into my account to play my games! :P
Ugh. Tech bug.
Playing as a larger nation has been giving some of us regular stutter from some graphics bug/mem leak. After I played England for a few months' game time, I started getting a steady fps bottoming-out every ~3 seconds.
After checking the support forum, it's fairly common. Looks to be most endemic in AMD vid cards.
Evidentally some of the new flashy graphic effects haven't been fully tested in this release version. At first, I was quite surprised at how well it ran for how shiny it looked. Until the mem leak (or whatever the issue may be) hit awhile later. :-[
On another note - I've been quite happy with some of the changes since EU3. It just reminds me of all the annoying flaws in EU3 that always made me quit playing. Looks like they've made some good adjustments in the game mechanics. The biggest thing left, which I'd still bitch about, is the small -/+3 Stability scale and the overzealous use of events for constantly pouring Stab hits on the player. Yes, Precious. Another constant barrage of "Comet Events" where, when you have a choice, it's either one penalty, another penalty, or no choice at all. Kinda ruins random events when most of them are bad, ya know? :-\
EDIT: One more note. The CK2 converter only natively works with the Steam version of CK2. Supposedly there is a way of copying & pasting all your Gamersgate DLC install over to the Steam install (??) but I'm already a bit too frustrated to mess with this at the moment, while jacking with various video settings in the EU4 options file to get rid of the video bug.

I've read elsewhere that starting it up from the game folder means you don't actually run it through Steam. You can even move the entire install folder somewhere else if you really wanted to.

LOL.. I ended up doing some Warlock with Stophro and CommandTent, because we were falling behind in our AAR. My 17 year old was playing Dota2 as well.. I've also promised him I'd join him at some point as well... But this EU IV looks cool!... Too many games, too little time!

Hmz, is that why they gave everyone a Steam version of CK2 when pre ordering? But I wonder, why doesn't it work with another version? You save the game in CK2, then there is an option to convert it and next you load your world as a mod into EU IV.
Why would the 'version' of CK2 matter?

The CK2 Converter is actually DLC for CK2. Not EU4.
So yeah, the way they made it.. you gotta have Steam CK2. Must be why they included it in the pre-order along with the converter. I had originally thought it would just ask you to locate your CK2 save game and convert it to an EU4 save, but noooooo. Paradox is now officially Steam-only from this point on. ::)
Hrmm.. well the odd graphics stutter went away after a time.
The only thing I can possibly link it to is being at war with France and having all their doomstack within my view (not in FOW). After the peacing them out, and all their armies falling back under the FOW, it eventually went away. ???
I also started a game as Denmark and haven't had the issue at all.
I started a new game as Poland, and I'm wondering if Westernization is worth it. I'm still very early in (1480 or so), but it seems to me the drop to -3 stability combined with -100 MP across the board is an awfully steep price to pay.

Best way to go about it is having enough resources prepared beforehand to get it back up as quick as you can. Stockpile then do it.
Supposedly the main reason you want to Westernize is so that you get to choose from the best rated armies. If you don't, then you'll still get worse types in other tech groups, even on the same tech levels.

Europa Universalis IV.
Europa Universalis IV Digital Extreme Edition (http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-EU4DEE/europa-universalis-iv-digital-extreme-edition) is priced at $22.50 for the next 3 days, 7 hours, and 30 minutes. A similar reduction is applied to the DLC and other EU4 Packs.
Now I'm torn between buying it for 50% off or waiting a few weeks for the Christmas specials to start and maybe getting it for 75% off. :-\
Hrmm.. the new 'randomized new world' expansion isn't out until sometime next year, right?
I figure I'll wait for the Xmas sale and pick up the extra release DLC stuff I don't already have - notably the Ottoman/Islam pack. Will probably be as cheap as it gets for awhile.
base game currently $10 at the humblebundle store. im still holding out on any purchases until the steam sale happens in a few days
