Title: Endless Space? Nope, it's Endless Legend!
Post by: Martok on August 22, 2013, 06:19:14 PM
So it appears that Amplitude Studios (the developers of Endless Space) have switched from space 4x to fantasy 4x with their newest project.  Link to the announcement from Iceberg (the publisher) is here (http://www.iceberg-games.com/index.php?dispatch=news.view&news_id=32):

QuoteHaarlem, The Netherlands - 21 August 2013 –  Indie videogames developer Amplitude Studios made quite a splash last year with their first title Endless Space (PC/Mac). The hugely popular 4x space strategy game launched on Steam in July 2012 selling around half a million units in its first year, while  garnering critical acclaim, marking an excellent debut for the Paris outfit.

Since the 2012 release, the studio has not only worked on expanding Endless Space with 4 free add-ons and an official expansion, but has also worked behind closed doors on new games set within the 'Endless' universe - the recently announced Dungeon of the Endless and in particular, their largest scale project to date: the 4x fantasy strategy game Endless Legend.

As was the case with Endless Space, Iceberg Interactive will fulfil the publisher role for the game, taking care of all sales channels (both retail and digital) except Steam (which Amplitude does itself) and assisting with PR & Marketing. Endless Legend is currently in development and is slotted for a Spring 2014 release.

"Creating a fantasy 4X game was a dream for all of us at Amplitude. The success of Endless Space and the support of our community have allowed to make this dream come true", comments Mathieu Girard, CEO of Amplitude Studios. "With respect towards great games released before us, we intend to set a new benchmark in creating a rich, immersive, thrilling, and accessible 4X strategy game in a new fantasy setting", he adds.

Erik Schreuder, CEO at Iceberg Interactive says: "4x strategy remains a key genre for us, whether set in a sci-fi or fantasy setting. We're very excited to continue our co-operation with Amplitude Studios and are certain that Endless Legend will be another flagship title, when it releases in 2014."

Developer Amplitude Studios released an exclusive first batch of screenshots, showing fans of the genre and its community some first glances into the world of Endless Legend. Download the screenshot batch here.  Follow Endless Legend's development via its official website and blog on http://amplitude-studios.com/.

Story of Endless Legend:
Another sunrise, another day of toil. Food must be grown, industries built, science and magic advanced, and wealth collected. Urgency drives these simple efforts, however, for your planet holds a history of unexplained apocalypse, and the winter you just survived was the worst on record. A fact that has also been true for the previous five.

As you discover the lost secrets of your world and the mysteries of the legends and ruins that exist as much in reality as in rumor, you will come to see that you are not alone. Other peoples also struggle to survive, to grow, and perhaps even to conquer.

You have a city, a loyal populace, and a few troops; your power and magic should be sufficient to keep them alive. But beyond that, nothing is certain... Where will you go, what will you find, and how will you react? Will your trail be one of roses, or of blood?

Key Features:
- Explore legendary lands with one of the eight civilizations available both in single and multiplayer, as you adventure through seasons, striving to discover the secrets of Auriga.
- Expand beyond the unknown and send your heroes in every corner of the world to find mysterious artifacts to equip your troops, and assimilate powerful minor factions which will help you overwhelm your opponents.
- Exploit every opportunity by researching new technologies and magical powers while collecting Dust, luxuries and strategic resources tradable on the marketplace.
- Exterminate fools who defy you with a genuine combat system where terrain and your unit abilities are key to take the advantage over the enemy armies.

I'm up for more fantasy 4X games.  The space 4x market has certainly been filled up.

I urge you to give it a fair go.  It's been patched to buggery and is a very solid, engaging game.  It's one that I'll return to often, I think.

Same here.  I've got it installed, but I've just not played it for any real length of time.  I really do mean to rectify that at some point -- even if it turns out ES isn't my thing, I at least want to give it a fair shake.

I gave it the college try...about 20 hours of so and just didnt like it. It was however, very polished and well put together so I would have no problem picking up another one of their games

I just sat down with ES for about an hour, finally taking in the tutorial and paying attention (I think I was pressed for time last time). It's not that bad, actually.

I guess I might have to try Galactic Civs II also - another Steam game I bought on sale but never really played.

After the long drought of proper heirs to MoM (Shadow Magic being the sole real pretender), I for one welcome all the serious attempts in the past few years and will no doubt spend my money on this one, too.

(After the bughunts because, you know.)

Jason, if you've not yet played/tried Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes, I recommend doing so.  I've been playing the hell out of it this weekend, and it's good fun.

I'd also put a plug in for Eador: Master of the Broken World.  Although it was a buggy mess at release, Snowbird has patched it quite nicely and, for $20, it's the deepest and best single-player TBS fantasy release I've seen since the original Dominions game, maybe better.

I haven't played FE: LH but logged a good 20 hours or more on FE and, while I enjoyed the game system, I found the immersion factor to be a small fraction of what I got out of either of the Eador titles.

I'm even starting to work on an Eador: MotBW After-Action Report, but the doc is already 12 pages long (with pics, double-spaced) and I'm only at Turn 22.  That gives you a feel for just how many strategic trade-offs there are to be made in the game...

I'm glad to hear Eador is being patched up; I've been holding off until then (and a sale, duh).

I picked up the LH expansion a few weeks ago on sale, I think, but between one thing and another I haven't been playing any of the MoM-heirs since they released (including Warlock. Was there a third one? Or fourth if Eador in its early and upgraded variations counts as the third? I've forgotten if so, but I feel like there was...)

We've also got Age of Wonders 3 on the way and some other things. Bliss!

Sorry, still not loving it.  I'm not sure what it is, but every video & screenshot of this game just leaves me feeling cold.  (I suppose it's some combination of the art style & UI that I'm not liking, although that's just a guess off the top of my head.)  There's something just...flat about Endless Legend -- no feeling of life.

If it turns out like Endless Space I will pass.... ES was lifeless and boring and the AI was pretty bad imho as it just continually spammed.  I  have to give kudos to the devs for continually updating ES and adding content, however in the end it just did not click with me and this has similar roots.  I wanted to like ES, but in the end just could not get into it and I fear this could be a repeat, just going to wait and see.

Nope, me as well.  I ended up turning down the sound and just watched the video...really liked what saw and am very tempted.

One thing I don't like about EL early access is the "founders" pack including DLC for other games?.

I'm really intrigued by it so far. I find the art to be excellent and think the game has a lot of character. The factions are varied and very different, as well.  Thus far, I'm enjoying it.

So is it an AoW3 clone? Basic city building-churn out units-fight or is it more I depth. I couldn't get into fallen enchatress and AoW3 is a bit to shallow for me (in terms of lack of city/empire building)

I haven't decided if the plot is stupid or cool. Basically, it takes place in the same universe as Endless Space and another game called Endless Dungeon. A ship filled with criminals was exiled from an Endless Space world. The ship crash lands on Auriga and the survivors are forced to defend themselves inside of the wreck. This action is the subject of endless dungeon. After the remaining survivors manage to break out of the wreck, they spread out on Auriga and settle in different zones. These settlements form the basis for the races in endless legend.

Well the plot seems pretty stupid, but then again, you know the devs are just trying to tie everything together.  It doesn't really impact gameplay.

I read some of the Steam forums and watched an IGN video and it sort of looks like AOW or Warlock.  I haven't played either so I can't comment on how accurate the comparison is...but that's what the forums are saying.

I'm more of a combat guy than an empire building guy....what I mean is that when I play Total War, I always set city management to AI control and I just manage recruitment.  City building really holds zero interest to me.  The game looks good for $25, but I don't have a frame of reference to compare it to.  I'm kinda looking to see if how much city building and/or resource gathering it is focused on.  That would be the deciding factor for me.

It certainly looks pretty enough.

So the story is just like Alpha Centauri only with criminals as the faction leaders?

No. I haven't seen any references to the criminal aspect in the plot of endless dungeon in endless legend.

I'm not really grasping any tremendous similarities with warlock and AoW.  This game has similar themes, but it has a very different mechanic and very different feel. So far, legends has grabbed me tighter than either warlock or AoW has.

Am I missing something or is there really no magic or spell-casting system? That's a pretty significant omission for a fantasy-based 4X, and while the game may very well make up for it in other ways (I just took a quick peek for about 5 minutes and read the Alpha manual so far, so I can't really tell yet), I expect it's going to get a drubbing for that reason.

It is not really Fantasy...as I explained in my earlier posts, it actually takes place in the future. Yes, units have armor and traditional weapons at first, but don't expect orks, elves and dwarfs. Its not that kind of fantasy. I'm pretty sure there is magic though, but I have not seen it yet. I picked a starting race that is heavily based on traditional combat.

I'm pretty sure that the advance hype was it is a fantasy-based 4X (which doesn't necessarily mean elves and orcs, btw).  Like I said, there's enough good here that it's not a problem for me, but I think people will come into to this expecting something that isn't there.

Recognizing that this is still an Alpha, there are a couple of improvements to the interface that are essential (again, unless they're there and I just can't find them):

Mouse scrolling
End-turn hot key
Informative tool-tip for wandering monsters (right now it just shows the name, not properties)
Different color font for that empire goal thing in the management screen.  I couldn't read most of the text in there at all.

It's a diamond in the rough for sure, but I see a lot of potential.

Limited as the gameplay currently is, I'm really starting to enjoy it.  I only have about 20 turns in playing as the suit-of-armor guys because I'm still feeling my way, but once I unlocked new ways for my army in interact with the  independent villages, things started getting  really interesting.  I also see that research can unlock new combat commands that can be purchased in the marketplace, although I haven't gotten there yet.

Empire management is straight out of Endless Space, although I did miss having a slider to adjust taxes (there aren't any).  I'm having a bit of a hard time coming to grips with the combat system, and I don't know if it's me or it isn't working properly.  For some reason my archers insist on moving into firing range, even after being given the command to hold.  And issuing commands every two rounds instead of every round is counter-intuitive to me, but I can get used to it.

It's probably like endless space in that you first start off with very few choices for buildings, ships, etc. As you build things and research, new buildings and new techs become available. When I first started endless space I thought there were only 3 types of buildings available. As I built and researched more came up. By the end if the game there were dozens.

Is this game pretty "feature complete" or are there glaring omissions (like no diplomacy or something!?

Is this game pretty "feature complete" or are there glaring omissions (like no diplomacy or something!?

You spent $300 for the Elite Alpha, which is about as feature incomplete as they come.  I'd say at $25, this game is a veritable bargain.

From the video, looks like a combination of Civ 5 and Fallen Enchantress.  I feel the pull on my wallet already.  :)

Yes. But I am still curious as to the state of this one. Some alpha builds are closer to betas and basically feature complete. Others are missing huge sections of the game. The price is fine, but if I am paying for a partial game, I want to know what's missing and what isn't so I can decide if I want to buy it. For elite, I'm willing to pay that knowing what I will get with the next build. Not sure about this one yet so just asking.

Not entirely.  Only 4 out of 8 playable factions, and 10 out of 15 NPC minor factions.  The tech tree only has 4 out of 6 "eras". The only victory condition is conquest, and the game is capped at the moment at 200 turns (I think one of the developers said after that you start running into memory leaks and random crashes, so they coded in a hard cap for now).  Also diplomacy is crippled somehow, but I couldn't say how, because I haven't encountered any other factions yet.

All of that said, there is a lot to like and it's still a hell of a lot of fun.  There are significant differences between the factions, combat, while basic in the beginning, becomes a lot of fun once you start researching different stances and orders.  I can't comment on the A.I. since I haven't encountered it yet.  All I can say is I woke up to go to the bathroom and decided to boot it up for "just a turn or two".   That was 2 hours ago.

there is also no so sea or any tech and units based around that from what i saw on the video - your only world choice is pangea or all land, so continents and islands are yet to be added

i joined Endless space at this stage and the developers were very open to suggestions from fans and players who actively steered the direction of the game

One thing I can say after playing 20-30 turns for each of the 4 available factions - they all play differently.  Also the narrative for their faction-specific quest lines is pretty well written and very immersive.

OK.  One thing that's starting to bug me a bit is that once you've chosen to attack another army, you're committed.  This wouldn't be a problem if you could see details of the army first before deciding to attack, as in AoW 3.  As it stands now, you don't get to see the army makeup until the pre-battle force comparison screen, and at that point there's no option to withdraw.

Am I remembering correctly that Endless Space did the same thing?  Seems to me that at least there was a tech you could research that let you see another army's makeup.  I sure hope they have one like that in EL.

There also doesn't seem to be a way to refuse any quests.  This hasn't been a problem because so far they've been easy, but I wonder if there is a penalty for failure (other than not getting the reward).

There is a hero ability that let's you do that I believe. I do like the way other forces in the area can reinforce the battle. The battle AI needs a few tweaks so ranged units don't run up to shoot at melee units. Fun so far.

OK, I caved.  Just a heads up that the GameFly code APR20OFF will work on Endless Legends.   Just picked up the Endless Legends Founders Pack for $26.99 :).  The code should work on the classic pack as well (~$21).

Steam code activated just fine.  Just hope to find some time this weekend to get into the game.

I really like almost everything about this title. Especially the UI. It's sort of what I wanted with Fallen Enchantress. Only better. I like to imagine its the natural evolution of Armageddon Empires, without the dice. :)

Reading the instruction manual, there are a lot of neat things here in this game. For example when you overproduce in one city either food or resources you create stockpiles. You can then select the stockpile and then select the city you want to send it to.  so you can send food from a food producing city to another city of your choice that might have a shortage. I like that system much better then a simple worldwide calculation.

Another interesting thing seems to be handling military units. Units can be purchased and later on disbanded but unlike other games when they are disbanded they go to a worldwide marketplace but they can be purchased by other players. You may find a unit that you had been used against you for battle. Not sure if this goes for units you have produced yourself or units you have purchased from the military marketplace almost like mercenaries

I'm putting this aside for now, not because I don't like it but because I like it too much. Whenever I get an alpha/beta copy of a game I really like I play it so much that by the time the release version is out I'm burned out on it and I want to avoid this.

I've explored just about every facet that's currently in the build with the exception of capacities (which I guess are kind of like spells after all). I can't figure out how to use them in battle, and I'm not sure if that's because they aren't in the game yet or I just never researched the right tech.

So for some reason this one is drawing me in...few questions before I pull the trigger....

1)  Any more feedback after playing the weekend?  I realize it is alpha so not expecting the world, but is it at least fun?

2)  Is there a pre-set number of turns for the game or do you play until you win, lose, or give up?  I always hate games with a pre-defined ending time limit so hoping that is not the case.

3)  Don't need a full comparison and maybe not even comparable, but I was originally looking at AOWIII...any thoughts on which has the better potential?  I am not great at this genre so kind of looking for something that will ease me and not overwhelm me...I do prefer one of these newer games versus games from the past.

Thanks!

1) It's a lot of fun, as incomplete as it is.  See my previous posts.  This has potential to be one of the classics.

2) That's a little unclear at the moment. The devs originally said that the alpha is capped at 200 turns because of memory leaks and stability issues.  You can still "win" the game by conquering the map if you can do it in less than that, but no other victory conditions are implemented.  There was a bit of an outcry about that, and the response was "Well, a winner is declared at 200 turns based on score, but you can keep playing after that.", but it's unclear if that refers to the Alpha, the final product, or both.

3)Without going into a feature-by-feature comparison, which you prefer is going to depend on your play style.  If all you care about is tactical combat, throwing spells around, and painting the map, than AoW is probably preferable, although no one really knows for sure since the combat system in Legends isn't fully in place yet.  If you are looking for more of a CIv-like experience, with diplomacy, infrastructure management, and alternative paths to victory, Endless Legends is clearly superior, even at this early stage.

The game's graphics are top notch, along with the user interface, especially for a person like me who typically don't play these types of games.  Really a clean feel and a pleasure to look at.  No doubt it is still in alpha, have had a few crashes here and there and some times seems like the turns take a little longer (not huge, just longer).  The game currently does not include a tutorial yet (it will) which for a person like me is making it a little harder to grasp.  I don't think its this specific game per se, I think I would struggle with all games like this.  Just not sure what to do and how to do it.  The battles seem Ok to me, haven't completely figured out what strategy to use yet, but I have won some and lost some, which is always good.  In some battles, even though I had more troops, I got slaughtered which just shows me I have to pay much better attention to strengths and weaknesses

So the things that need work I see as the following (fully understanding still in alpha):

-  Fix crashes

-  Some of the battle deployment is kind of crazy...depending on the terrain, the default setup might put your troops behind terrain (i.e. hills, water) away from the enemy, by the time you can move them into position to attack, the battle is over

- Pathfinding...seems like sometimes the auto pathfinding does some crazy stuff.  I'll pick a point, it will move me in a crazy direction.  Then I choose the point again and puts me back to my original spot...kind of going back and forth.

- Need a tutorial added sooner than later so players can fully help test the game, especially newbies like myself

- 200 turn limit...hopefully just in the pre release version....I haven't reached that yet, but some of the buildings/troops take a long time to create so I can't imagine how 200 turns is enough to conquer things.  For example, one of the first quests require you to have 3 units so you have to build one first....that takes something like 7-8 turns, so kind of just sitting around.

-  Quests...so far everytime I restart a campaign, I get the same exact quests in the same order.  Are quests hard coded like that?  I hope not, would like to see different things, otherwise not sure of the replayability when using the same faction.

Overall I think I will enjoy it and I am going to commit myself to figure things out....its only in alpha but I do see the long term potential if they stick with it.

Grim,

You can reposition your troops during the deployment phase by selecting a unit and clicking on one of the shaded hexes (your color). This is vital in most battle to move to high ground or concentrate forces.

Pathfinding does seem to have a few issues dealing with cliffs at time. In many cases you may need to zoom in to see the cliffs when zoomed out moving troops. One thing that would help is a better visibility of those edges when zoomed out in "map" mode.

The game does have a time limit which is okay for the alpha. I have yet to hit it, but I've been using small worlds.

Bugs. Several. Biggest one is the land size and region size selections. Setting region size larger than the land mass size crashes the world builder every time. Also get the one off exception being throw, but the game still plays. Diplomacy is a no show right now. AIs just go to war with you. No real interaction on that front yet.

The main quest line does have the drag you by your nose feel. Side quests appear to be varied and I'm sure more quests will pop up as the game matures.

I do like the whole look and feel of the game. Shows great potential, more so if deeper modding is available after release.

Thanks Capn...

Appreciate the tip for deployment, could have sworn I tried that without success, but will try again.  As for pathfinding, most of the issues I saw did involve cliffs so seems like that should be fixable at some point.  I do hope the quests become a little more varied (or at least don't show up in the same order) just to give a little more flexibility, but likely not a deal breaker....I do agree the game has great potential.

Now I just have to decide if even worth investing in FE:LH since the sale ends today I believe....for the experts, are the quests more varied in that game?  Just have to decide if I have room for two of these games right now:)

Based on other 4x titles I've seen, after you reach a certain cap of cities (usually defined by the difficulty level), every additional city creates unrest.

Thus the need for labor camps.

On a more serious note, can anybody talk about how the P vs E component of this game is working so far?  That's an area that's really rich for 4x fantasy TBS, but I hope it's something more varied than just "see monster lair, attack monster lair for treasure, get what's inside if you can defeat the inhabitants".  Monster spawn points of various magnitudes makes for a great gaming experience, I've found!
Title: Re: Endless Space? Nope, it's Endless Legend!
Post by: jomni on May 05, 2014, 06:38:43 PM
There are minor 'monster' factions that spawn from villages in your region.  Like the barbarians of Civ.
But the difference here is that you can assimilate them.  Once assimilated, you can recruit them into your army.  And every village you rebuild (after sacking) will have unique empire bonuses based on the monster race.  That's all I've seen so far aside from the "exploring" ruins thing.

You can assimilate minor factions, but you are limited in how many.  I think you are limited to 1 initially after researching ?? (I forget :-[, but it gives you parley) in Era I.  I think I read that you can increase that number by researching items in Era III and also eventually Era VI when it becomes available.

Not only that but minor tribes can be assimilated through bribery or completion of a quest, in addition to brute force.

So if one was to purchase Endless Legend, would one get the Classic or Founders version? Is the Founders version worth the extra money? Anyone know when full release is for this?

It might depend if you have (or don't have) Endless Space and Dungeon of the Endless since some of the extras in the Founders Pack apply only to those games.  I picked up the Founders Pack since I could use a 20% voucher code to get it on GameFly for about the same price as the Classic Pack.  The only items in the Founders Pack that apply to Endless Legends are one new minor faction, one unique faction trait and one hero all of which will only be available at release.  I think you might be better off to just get the Classic Pack (check GameFly and Greenmangaming for voucher codes first) and get the DLC later on during a sale.

I do have Endless Space but have yet to try it out, ashamedly. But the extra factions and items that come with the fancy version...worth the extra expense or are they barely noticeable?

2015 eh...lot of people are having fun with it now though, it seems.

Something about the look of the game is drawing me to it...clearly I did not feel the same about Endless Space.

The Founders Pack extras that apply to Endless Legends only consist of one new minor faction (Ice Wargs), one new Hero and a unique faction trait.  Can't say if the extras are noticeable since they are not in the game yet and won't be until the game is officially released.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I don't think ships have been introduced into the game yet, at least not in the 0.4.8 patch.

I did see this on their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/EndlessLegendGame) though....

@Gustington -- Like you, I have owned Endless Space for a while now and never played it. I went back and gave it a serious try a couple of days ago, thanks to this thread, and comments from the likes of Martok and Nefaro who keep mentioning how much they like it.

It's definitely worth trying. It's execution is nearly flawless -- you will never find yourself fighting the game (with the exception of the tech tree. It's not immediately obvious what some techs accomplish). AI does not appear particularly bad or good, but like many 4x games, remains more of a hindrance to your own plans than an active plotter against. (This is the reason why I am so hopeful for GalCiv3). My biggest problem with the game may be similar to yours. I can't enjoy a sci fi entertainment if I don't like the looks of the space ships. And there are only a couple of models in the entire Endless Space (core) that I enjoy.

While it's play is smooth and is at least as good as any other Space 4x Hall of Not Complete Shite, the lack of attractive ship models is the primary reason why I'm posting about it instead of playing it.

If, however, you don't have the same quirk, you will be hard pressed to find any space 4x that is better.

I would like to play the game against some human opponents whose ships I also do not like.

My problem with endless space was that by mid game, I was building everything on every planet. Should be harder to manage an empire. Other than that, I really enjoyed it

Yes, empire management is painfully easy. (Not Aow3 painfully easy.) Too often I have planets not building anything because I've not only built everything I want to, but everything I can actually can. The only decision is when and in what order. There are very few negative consequences for any structure. Also, I am fairly certain that when I lowered taxes my revenues went up because of improved happiness. I certainly never felt any financial pressures in the game, but also took the Entrepreneur racial benny (+1 credit for each population).

I agree that most of the ship models aren't terribly interesting.  They're passable, I suppose.  I do like the way they have the tac battles set up, because they can be resolved rather quickly.  However, I think it needs more variety;  more card play options perhaps?  Even the unlocks for more of them, in the tech tree, still makes it feel a bit short on that end.  It doesn't bother me much because it accomplishes what it does in short time.  Hell.. I find myself auto-resolving a steady amount of Total War battles because I don't want to spend all the time fighting it out when the end result is likely one way or another.  The strategic gameplay in this stuff is the focus for me so this method is alright.

Building on planets is generally beneficial and the biggest hurdle to doing so is research and time, although some of the buildings have negative effects on certain things.  You gotta be careful about the ones with trade-offs.  So you should still make some specialization decisions, depending on what you've researched, because if you just build everything then you may have one building that penalizes a certain production which another creates, thus cancelling out some of the benefits (and having wasted the extra time building these opposed features).  It's more about efficiency, I think.  As your colonized planets' populations grow, their builds will eventually catch up to your homeworld's tech level, possibly with some differences depending on specialization.  It can take awhile to get there, however.  Makes some sense from a logical viewpoint.

Also.. the Horatios.  Hilarious.  Love the race concept.  :)

Final beta is up before release next Thursday.  It seems pretty complete to me.  Other than some fine tuning in a Day One patch, this might as well be the release version.

Quote
CHANGES AND ADDITIONS
Implementation of the new battle rules.
Updated the units.
Updated the unit capacities
Updated the items effects
Refactoring of the technology tree
Added Eras 5 and 6 of the technology tree
Added new Winter Effects
Global balancing of the game
Added animated diplomats
Added French and German localisations for testing purposes
Added OSX version for testing purposes
Added the tutorial
Added the game credits list
Implemented the Audio mix

OTHER FIXES
Fixed 250+ issues. Too many fixes to be listed here... :)

I m in the middle of the tutorial, and I would suggest going through it even if you've been playing. A few things have been changed, particularly how combat works and optimization of boroughs

[edit]I take back what I said about there being nothing more to add.  Having finished the tutorial and gone back to the main menu, I can't find the faction editor.  I assume it will be in next week's build.

I don't know what you mean by "a lot of content", but if AoW is 20% empire building and 80% combat, this is the opposite.  Here's a pretty good preview someone wrote up:  https://www.dropbox.com/s/c27u9hgzcir1bcj/Endless%20Legend%20Early%20Impressions.pdf?dl=0

It is very deep. Haven't seen anyone complain that it lacked depth (like many did in AOW3)

Thanks for the input.

The Building/Combat ratio doesn't concern me.  I enjoy both.  My concern was regarding unit, building, spell, ability, etc variety.  That's normally a high priority for me in most games, but I think it's even more important in the Fantasy Strategy genre.

Doesn't tequila do the same thing?

You'd be surprised at just how many things do this to him.

Surprised and dismayed, I fear....

How many factions are now in Endless Legend? I am going to guess that more will be released as DLC in the future.

7 now with an 8th in the final release Thursday, as well as a faction editor. Nefaro, if it's magic you're looking for, this may not be the game for you. There are only a handful of spells, and most of them are passive buffs.  Don't get this expecting to throw fireballs around, cause it isn't going to happen.

Playing through the tutorial now...really like it, the game is very slick. I am about to embark on my first battle, but after deployment I cannot get the combat to start...the button is grayed out. Is there some step I should be taking between deployment of units and combat? This combat is in a quest...two of my marine units against a Rumbler.

It doesn't specifically have to be magic variety.  Just faction variety in general.  Does each faction just have a few bonuses that set them apart or do they have mechanics that make them play & feel differently?  Does each faction have different combat units and buildings or are there many commonly shared types between them all?

In other words, does playing one faction feel like it plays quite differently, or only more of the same with different bonuses & penalties?

I suppose I'll just check out some extended playthrough videos to see.

From what I have seen, you can upgrade and alter units with new armor and weapons based in tech level and natural resources available. That's probably about it.

Nefaro:

The races all play very differently.  They all have some techs that are exclusive to them, and heroes, who either show up randomly or can be purchased, have 3 trait tracks on which they can advance when leveling up - two are the same for everyone, and the third is specific to the race of the hero. mikeck is right when he says the basic unit (actually unit category) is the same for every race. Every race has a melee unit, a ranged unit, a cavalry unit, and a support unit, but the specifics are unique for each race.  But not only can you customize your units, but there is a mechanic in the game, unlocked by tech, that allows you to hire mercenaries from other races.  In addition, all of the minor factions have one faction specific unit.  Assimilating the minor faction allows you to build that unit, but you can only have one minor faction assimilated at a time.  So depending on the minor factions you encounter, which ones you assimilate, what mercenaries are available, what techs and strategic resources you have access to, you can play two games with the same faction and end up with two very different armies.

As an example of how factions play differently, most rely on food to grow the population of their cities.  Except there is one that has no food at  all and has to purchase new population, and another that gets population by raising the dead.  Only one factions actually uses magic to any great extent.  Another faction is made up of nomadic merchants, and not only starts the game with key economic techs already researched, but van relocate their cities, and so forth.  Plus each faction has a unique, story-based quest chain.  Getting to the end of the chain is one of the 9 victory conditions.

After waffling for so long, I finally buckled a day or two ago.  It just got the official release today, with some new stuff.

I've not been in much of a gaming mood lately, but I did put some time in last night with it.  Very enjoyable although the tactical combat is nothing much to write home about.  The empire building is fun.  I suppose it's like Endless Space regarding those same facets, although the faction differences are more interesting in this one.  O0

I ended up buying it an Elite due to a credit sent to my Paypal account after cancelling an order.  Due to the hops induced haze, I couldn't figure out why my first city wasn't expanding.  Then it clicked that because I was playing the empty suits of armor guys that I needed to spend gold (dust just sounds stupid) to expand.  Time to start over.

Yeah.  It's almost just like the Endless Space UI.  While the functionality is similarly excellent, using the same artistic style isn't so much.  I'm just glad they used the color black for the background as opposed to something silly like silver *cough**CW2**cough*.  So it's not as bad as others.

The game art is nice.  The interface art is just re-used Endless Space stuff.  I'm still enjoying the building & customization side of the game but the combat and warfare is meh.  I'll probably have to go back to AOW3 and FE:LH when I want more interesting conflict.

There is a little tie in with the Endless Space Lore..... this being the pre-cursor of history to the Endless Space game.

Is the AI generally very passive?  I'm 75 turns in to my first game and I've managed to knock out two other factions with complete ease.  The AI doesn't seem to be doing anything at all.  They had units in one city that could have come out to attack my stack that was besieging another city very close by, but they didn't.  Nor did the 3 unit stack in the besieged city try to attack.  They just sat there until the defences were reduced to zero and my 3 units plus hero were able to slaughter them.

I haven't seen that at all.  What level are you playing on?  IN my games, every time I've laid siege to a city the AI has sent an army out to try to break it.  The only thing the AI seems to be passive about is exploring temples.  It doesn't appear to do that at all.

I'm not sure what the AI is set at.  Whatever the default settings are.  They are out and about doing stuff as they are building new cities and I did get a pop up message informing me that a faction I hadn't yet met had been wiped out.

Having said that, I've got the dragon dudes and the gypsies guys with porn 'staches on my borders.  According to the dip page, they're both less than fond of me yet neither of them troubles me in the slightest.  They seem content to sit idly until I decide to attack them.

Some recent patch notes mentioned that AI factions have a hard turn limit for when they're allowed to besiege your cities (after game start) and another one a bit further on for attacking your armies.  I believe the first is sometime before Turn 100 (75 or 90?) and the second is at or near that.

EDIT:  Here's a quote about Minor Factions-
QuoteMinor factions can now attack cities starting turn 100th, besiege them starting turn 50th and attack converted villages starting turn 15th.

Dunno about the large opposing AI factions.  I've not played enough to encounter a very large AI army that could threaten me much yet.  When the Minors were besieging my city with only two units, in the previous version, they'd get exceptionally murderized when I sent my army in due to the extra Militia troops you get for fighting near it.  I suspect that's part of the reason they created the initial turn limitations for doing so, along with the possibility of constantly tying up some players' scouting units in the early game.  I've already seen those Minors villages steadily kicking out small armies into my territory and if they were going straight over to siege my city, I'd get little done with my initial army.

The "dragon dudes" are the diplomats of the game, and are programmed to go for a diplomatic/alliance victory.  The "Pornstache Gypsies" are traders (economic faction) and their weakness is that they can't declare war.  So I'm not surprised neither has bothered you.  Play a game with Cultists or Necrophages living next door and let me know how that goes, OK?

The Necro bugs and the Magic chicks were the two right on my borders.  Neither did much but sit back and let me roll over them.  Neither ever sent out a unit to attack.  They'd just content themselves with occasionally asking me to stop after I'd taken one of their cities.

Nope.  The dragon guys were on my south-east, the Necros were to the northwest, and the mages were to the west.  the trader guys were on the other side of the Necros and, as I took out the Necros, they now share a border with me.  The Vaulters were wiped out by someone else before I met them and there's one faction I've not run into yet.  Not sure who had the strongest military.  I'll check the graphs when I get home.

I've been having crashes on my older Win7 machine (I use that with the 42" LED TV) with Endless Legend.  But my laptop has been fairly smooth other than some oddball screen screwing up but being able to exit and restart.

I'm diggin the game but it seems rather thin on content in some areas.  I mean.. how many Minor Races are there?  Six?!  Then you have only one starting unit type and two more you can unlock through research.  Meh.  Not much.  While you can arm them, the equipment is mostly the same 'ole stuff with larger bonuses as you research higher & higher tiers.  You can find the plans for some special ones via quests but there don't seem to be many types.  I come away with the impression that this is a step back from Endless Space regarding content.  Unless a buttload of shinies opens up somewhere past Tier 3 that I've not seen.

There is also a noticeable lack of in-game information and functionality.  Such as past turn logs, hot keys for some functions, and an in-game encyclopedia.  Dunno how many times I was looking around the UI attempting to find out what a specific monster/researchable unit's skill did to no avail (only being able to do so after entering combat or researching).  Stats for Minor Race units once the initial turn's message had been cleared only located where you have to choose Assimilation (hopefully you don't accidentally replace your current one in that screen).  Etc.  While the basic UI functionality is still there from Endless Space, there is some extra stuff that is commonplace in 4X games these days which I'm either not finding or, as I suspect, are not there at all.

I admit that I haven't played past the second Tier stuff yet, but I've started three new games to get an early impression of the replay variety.  Doesn't seem to be much.  But it's an unusual take on the genre, so that makes it interesting.  I like it but I'm beginning to think I'll get more long term enjoyment out of FE:LH (great variety, terrible art & lore direction) and AOW3 (still a bit lacking in variety since it's mostly focused on warfare but still has more than EL).  I may end up shelving it until some more kinks are worked out and hope that more stuff gets added at some point.  It's not bad, just feels rather thin in places.

Those aren't unique traits.  Modern 4X games have all that and more.  Compared to other titles in the genre, it's thin on content.  Fortunately the art and some of the mechanics are different enough to make it interesting on it's own merits.

Perhaps there will be an onslaught of DLC content added in the future?

Yeah, I'm finding it a bit shallow as well.  I don't seem to be doing much of anything other than wandering around the map looking for shiny hexes and occasionally attacking a minor village or clicking the next item on the build queue.

AOW3 has far more combat and unit variety.  EL has some interesting factions, a beautiful map, and perhaps more possible faction customization derived from research.

EL's combat is more hands-off while AOW3's combat is closer to a light wargame.  For instance, you only give orders to move or target a specific unit and then set a generalized back-up plan (attack, hold, or defend) if that doesn't pan out by the unit's initiative activation.  AOW3 has you directly control the units, select their (more varied) attacks, and even has facing and zones of control - far more detail in combat.

EL has more researchable stuff available, although most of it is buildings to be unlocked and constructed for further income/happiness/collecting bonuses for your cities.  The core concepts are still pretty much the same as Endless Space, with a different flavor & setting.  I liked Endless Space and this one is similarly enjoyable although it's even more long & focused on the initial peaceful build-up.   Not sure how the late game plays out yet.

I haven't played the title yet, but I think this may be an example of "depth vs breadth"?  The game seems to have excellent breadth, but folks are worried about the depth.

Depth-of-game-play can be an interesting animal.  Some games have it in spades and do a pretty good job of making it accessible.  Two games that have the best depth of content ever but badly struggle in the "making it accessible to gamers" are Distant Worlds and Eador: Masters of a Broken World.  I love both those titles, but have seen a lot of gamers really struggle to get up the learning curve on either.

For Eador, that lack of accessibility to the depth was compounded by frequent bugginess to consign it to the history pile of TBS gaming.  Which is sad, because the content and game design were amazing.  It truly had the potential to be the successor to Master of Magic, if only they'd gotten the execution around their code base tighter.

I have not played Endless Legend enough to get a great feel for the game, however in the time I have played I can say it is a improvement over the issues I had with Endless Space thus far.  I have yet to see if the late game is any better, however the world does not feel lifeless and there are many things you can do to shape your empire.  The battles are pretty good and UI is still excellent.  I do see the AI going for a land grab early on which I thought was odd as I thought there were penalties for doing this. The factions play differently and feel like they have enough to separate each.

In terms of this vs AOW3, I have the expansion and I would say AOW3 is a better game from a depth standpoint.  I want to get into the expansion but have had no time to do so..... just to see how far AOW3 has come.  Endless Legend is a good game thus far, however I feel there are more things needed to make it a great title and would rate it behind Fallen Enchantress LH and AOW3 at this point... but still , I am glad I have it and look forward to spending more time with it.

Post by: Silent Disapproval Robot on September 29, 2014, 04:41:23 PM
I quit my campaign as the Broken Armor guys because I'd misunderstood some of the game concepts and ended up mismanaging some armies and cities.

I started a new game as the Necrophages but i found that I didn't like their play style so I quit that one and started again as the Ardent Mages.  Normal difficulty, 6  random factions, default map settings.

I still don't really know what the hell I'm doing.  I just kept wandering around the map, exploring ruins, slapping down minor tribes, and building up my cities.  Before I knew it, I was awash in resources and just kept dumping money into buying improvements.  I got into a fight with the Necrophages but wiped them out very quickly.

Then I just didn't know what to do. There didn't seem to be any real focus or direction to the game.  Seems like the winter turns get longer and the summer ones get shorter as the game progresses so it was harder and harder to move across the map.  I had an ocean on one side and the trader clan on my other and they weren't making any trouble so I just kept slowly wandering and building up cities.   I had a few minor dust ups with the Cultists but no real wars once the Necros were gone.

I'm still not sure how to control happiness as many of my cities were in a state of constant rebellion yet this didn't really seem to have any noticeable negative impact.  I didn't need to garrison these cities with troops and I never saw an actual revolt.

The game just sort of ground on and on and I would occasionally get a message saying either I or the Cultists were in the lead.   Eventually the game just ended and I was told I'd won.

I don't think this is the game for me.  There seems to be a lot of number crunching going on in the background but not enough for the player to actually do.  I guess if you're really into optimizing each and every city so that you squeeze the absolute most out of it each turn, you might enjoy this but that's not really my thing.  It just didn't feel like I had any real clear goals.  Winning an expansion victory wasn't going to happen because the units just don't move quickly enough for it to happen.  Same with the quest victory.  I was in Chapter 6 of it and I needed to defend my city against 3 waves of pitifully weak armies but the winter movement penalties meant it was going to take them 20+ turns to even reach my city and I was able to just hunt them down.  I started the next chapter in the quest victory but the game timed out before I could carry it out.

I think I'll give it one more shot only I'll set the speed to Endless and remove score victory from the options and see how it plays out.

There are 8 different victory conditions that can be turned on or off when setting up a game.  Did you read them?  Also, when looking at your empire summary screen there's a button in the lower right had corner that takes you to a screen that shows how all the factions are doing (the ones you encountered, anyway) in general, how far each has progressed in the different victory conditions, and what you actually have to do to win.

Yes, of course I read them.  Doesn't really matter much as the game just doesn't seem to impel you with any sense of urgency.  You can just potter along and win on points though as the AI doesn't seem to be up to much generally.

If you read them you'd know that the point victory can be turned off. Depending on the length of game you select at some point (300, 450l or 600 turns) Winter starts up and never ends.  That's a pretty good reason to keep momentum going.

As you can see from my previous post with the victory screen, I mention in the very last line that I'll be doing that next time.

You increase Happiness by researching & constructing certain buildings.

Your Happiness rating affects your resource incomes.  When it's low, you get income penalties.  You should be able to see this in a tooltip somewhere (top of the city management screen is the Happiness bar) IIRC.

I like the different factions in this game but it needs more depth.  Like you, I feel as if there isn't much going on but waiting for research and construction to finish a vast majority of the time.  If the economic & construction side of this had made up for the slow pace or lack of action, then that would be fine.  But that's not terribly deep either.   It looks and plays pretty.  The Heroin Chic waif that's kinda sickly and shallow.  Hopefully they add some serious content in a DLC at some point.

Place the mouse cursor over the Happiness level to see what negative effects you are suffering.... normally if you are expanding too quickly you will suffer huge penalties.  Also, make sure in the food area you are not in the negative and if so, place a worker there until it rights itself..... this can happen in the winter as you get negative effects.

Happiness can also be increased by activating luxury resources, as well as certain Empire plans.

I'm near the end of my first game and I am a little in between on this game.  I think it is a vast improvement over Endless Space, however I just not sure as a long term play that I will continue to come back and play.  The UI, art and music, battle map and strategic map,  are all great..... however the limited number of units and so/so content seem like a lack of long term interest.  I still like I would play Fallen Enchantress or AOW 3 over Endless Legend.  With most 4X games the middle near the end becomes a mop-up.  The AI is just Ok, but seems a little on the weak side.

I'm curious.. in what way do you think it's a "vast improvement" over  Endless Space?

It's pretty much the same stuff, except having less depth regarding content, and being a little prettier.  Seemed like ES had more of that.   ???

I think moved forward with the way they handled the research and eras and the battle map.  The customization is just 'ok', but the map and the way the game deals with minor races etc.... I think is a step forward.  I do not however feel the game is on par with Fallen Enchantress or AOW3 and do not see myself playing EL very often... maybe every once in a while which is more than ES which I doubt I will ever re-install.  The middle to late game is better in EL as there is not the spamming that ES did.

After the initial new game smell wore off, I admittedly went back to playing AOW3 with it's new DLC fairly quickly.  EL could be a great game if they spent the time & resources to fill it out quite a bit more.  I doubt it will ever quite get there unless they spend a lot of time doing DLC.

Like others, I think FE:LH has the widest range of goodies to enjoy but the graphic style makes me wrinkle my nose every time and the pre-made races and lore are *ZzzzzZ*.

After one play through and a brief of another I can say this game is good for one or maybe 2 play throughs.....  Unfortunately the second game felt just like the first.... so a couple observations after some gameplay...

- Not enough variety in the game, my second game felt just like the first
- AI seems very week and passive
- I actually like the Research tree and method
- Unit customization is very limited/basic compared to other games
- The Map and UI are very well done, graphics overall are very well done
- The game still feels like a spreadsheet as did ES, however the lore is pretty well done
- The Winter effects are a nice touch

Overall, this game just does not have enough content to keep you coming back after a play through.  I would suggest to wait until more content is added and maybe some AI tweaks before picking it up.  Right now, Fallen Enchantress and AOW3 are superior to this title in most respects although EL does introduce some pretty cool features, but not enough to overtake the competition yet.

Yeah.  I very nearly started a new campaign last night but read that an update with new stuff would be out very soon.

They have also been working on improving the AI and making it more aggressive, although I don't think they're finished with all that yet.

I'm curious as to what extras are being added.  Like with AOW3 on release, I feel like EL is a good core game but it needs more content to make it feel whole.  DLC in the future?

I'd say go with Age of Wonders III or Fallen Enchantress instead. They're both still on my HD whereas Endless Legend got the boot after my 3rd campaign play though.  I just didn't find it offered up enough to do and the AI was far too passive.

Ok.

Is AoW III much different than AoWII or I. I played I a lot but when I try to go back I don't seem to get the same enjoyment out of it... and it's not the graphics.

Never played Fallen Enchantress.......

It's been so long since I played the original AoW, that I couldn't make an honest comparison at this point.  All I can tell you is that while I've enjoyed both titles, I probably like III even more.

Gasp!  :o  :P

Well the game isn't for everyone, but personally I love Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes.  I enjoy it even more than AoW3 (which is saying something), and it's generally been my go-to fantasy-strategy game for the last year now.

If you're looking for more of a Civ-style empire-builder with fantasy elements, then FE:LH is definitely one to check out.  Of course, it's not nearly as "pretty" as AoW3, and the battle system isn't as snazzy, so there's that to keep in mind.  On the flip side, if you find AoW3 to be a little too shallow and/or war/combat-focused, then FE:LH could be the antidote to that.

Personally, I enjoy both titles.  They each have their strengths & weaknesses, and each scratches a slightly different itch for me in the fantasy-strategy-gaming department.  It all depends on what I'm in the mood for.

I'm currently playing FE:LH, both due to the new update and having picked up a bunch of DLC that's on sale at Steam right now.  I know I'll swing back around to Age of Wonders 3 eventually, though.

Title: Re: Endless Space? Nope, it's Endless Legend!
Post by: Nefaro on November 27, 2014, 08:43:00 AM
FE:LH is my least played of the three.

It certainly has the content and customization options, but the blah anime-inspired artwork and even more blah background & factions just don't keep me coming back as much.  I normally don't complain about such things, but they're exceedingly dull and generic in FE.  I'd imagine Starfury's head would explode if he was exposed to it for long.  Yet it still has heaps of faction & unit customization so it' still installed on my HDD.

AOW3 is great.  At first I was lukewarm but it kinda grew on me, like a fungus.  Notably so after picking up the first expansion DLC.  It's a nice fit with turn-based battles that require some tactics and a fair amount of expansion and building on the campaign map.  It still needs moar stuff added IMO but there is plenty there right now to get the full experience for a time.

EL also needs more content.  And the AI needs to be adjusted on the regular difficulty.  The developers are actually doing the latter, and have even been asking for suggestions regarding AI behavior players would like to see, on their forum.  It's ongoing but I think the patch from a couple days ago may have put some initial changes in.  I've see some people say they got a challenge out of the AI later in their games so it may not need anything too drastic.  My big concern is the limit of troop types and monsters/opponents to be had.  But it's easy to get into, or back into, and feels different than your run-of-the-mill fantasy strategy game.  So for a lighter 4X, it is enjoyable for a time and will be more so when they release some additional DLC and such.

By the by, RPS has not only named Endless Legend the best 4x title of 2014 (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/12/08/best-4x-games-2014-endless-legend/), but the best overall game of the year (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/12/24/best-pc-game-2014-endless-legend/) (for the PC) as well.  The game may not appeal to me much personally, but I have to admit that's a pretty remarkable achievement.

Working though my games and after playing through a recent game I think I will put this one away, the AI is suspect and after a while I continually just sim battles and after a while it just is, ok.  The higher difficulty just tend to suffer what Endless Space did with spam expand.  Overall a pretty decent game, however I feel Fallen Enchantress and AOW 3 are superior.  No doubt the graphics are nice and UI is pretty good.  Overall though I feel there is just not enough there for the long term so I will be retiring this one from my HD.

I'd say it was just the lack of depth.

The setting, art, interface, etc were all great but the game just didn't have a lot of content variety once you got stuck in.  The polar opposite of FE:LH, where the setting and art is just uninspiring & dull but there is a lot of stuff to build and tweak.

The AI is an issue, especially that is primarily uses the same tactic.  Harder settings just result in an increases in expansion and unit spam.... really just not fun.

As Nef said, the variety is just not there.  The ideas are great, however just lacking in execution.  The battles are really just boring and after a while you end up just auto-resolving them.  The art and ui and music are great.... the back story is not bad, just really lacks in substance and sustainability.  And yet again, the AI just is lacking in a major way.

Having found an excellent set of lets plays to give me a nudge in the right direction I started my first proper campaign about 10 days ago - I'm annoyed I didn't give the game a chance all the time ago, it's brilliant - certainly filled a gap before civ 6 and will be played even after that

It's really quite different from any other 4x. But I always hd trouble explaining WHAT was different. You just have to play it.

I always get defeated quickly in this game.

I tried playing again and maybe it is just me, but I like everything about this game..... however, I get bored pretty quickly and totally lose interest.  The factions are cool, UI, etc.... but maybe I am going about it wrong, I just lose interest.

Every game appeals to some and not others. There isn't always a "why"....sometimes it just doesn't blow your skirt up.

Personally, I love this game. It is important to note that MANY of the options and things to do become available only after your progress through the tech tree. By the end you have dozens of building choices for a system, planet choices, tons of weapons for ships, tanks, political issues and many more laws to pass. I have not done it yet but apparently you can open up trade lines as different trade corporations pop up. You can make contract with them for different materials and they bring them to you if you establish a route for the I have not done it yet but apparently you can open up trade lines as different trade corporations pop up. You can make contract with them for different materials and they deliver it. I know you can blockade planets but I'm not sure if you can attack these "merchant fleets "
When you start out, first 25 turns is really just exploring, identifying good systems and getting basic tech

I really like the politics and the "probes" I like that I can l launch a probe in any direction and get a "feed" about what is there...they don't have to follow hyperspace lines either. Cool way to search for annoying pirates; launch 4-5 probed around an area.

I think there is definitely a whole lot more going on here than most 4xs

I think you are referring to Endless Space.... we are actually talking about Endless Legend  ;)

The upgrade from Magic Sword to Destroyer is a son-of-a-bit_ch. Poor blacksmiths.

After buying this back in October for 79% off, I finally booted it up 4 days ago (since I found NOTHING in the winter sale to buy, other than a couple of titles over at Matrix). I am really impressed. This game is almost perfect - interface, graphics, AI seems good. I have been up until 3 AM to 5 AM four days in a row (great being retired). I am sure problems will arise, but rarely has a game performed like this for me. A contrast would be Civ6...dead AI makes it pretty much a sandbox.

Yeah.

I'd also add that the City-building, while it uses similar conventions to other titles, combines them in a way that is simply brilliant.  They just get the "organic city building" feeling just right, as that's always felt constrained in other games.

This creates some delightful trade-off situations, where you have to figure out whether you want to "snake" to get a valuable resource or keep an integrated city structure that will maximize the actual production values and approval of your city center and boroughs.

I'm not sure these concepts are new to this title, but I've never seen it before.

I like the unit customization.

At the same time, there doesn't look like there will be much variety in opposing units to fight.  Each faction has.. what?  Five unit types?  And some minor factions, each with one unit type, of which you can optionally recruit a few with a research unlock.

Then you just build weapons/armor/trinkets to juggle the bonuses for a few stats on each.  *shrug*  They all still seem to work similarly in battles no matter how different they look.

Also enjoy the missions & such, but they seem very linear other than which specific hex you have to go to for some stages.

I dunno... it's theme is different enough to make it interesting, as with the other Endless games.  But I'm in doubt regarding the variety of experiences available throughout a campaign in Endless Legend.  Have tried starting a few campaigns and they always start feeling very samey in a short time.

Have I become too spoiled on the varieties in games like the Dominions/CoE series, Age Of Wonders 2, etc?  I want more mechanical differentiation between the factions' units in EL, but maybe I just need to carry on much much further into my campaigns to find it?

Your critique around a lack of individuality for each faction's combat units is fair.  It's about the only wart I've found in the game.

However, in other terms, the different factions play very differently.  Vaulters play like the Zakharov faction in SMAC but with a "Holy" resource that gives them extra bonuses, while the Wild Walkers are your traditional Green Party/tree-hugger faction.  Other groups play a lot differently (e.g., The Broken Lords gain population with Dust rather than Food, the Ardent Mages can spend Dust to cast spells, Cultists are limited to one (huge) city in the game but spawn villages, etc.).

I almost pulled the trigger on this Grand Collection thing for ten bucks tonight, but something told me to check 'Can You Run It' first. It's telling me my video card can't handle it, but everything else is fine. :(

In fact it's reporting that I have 128MB of dedicated video RAM. W. T. F.

I have Endless Space already in Steam, but am installing it now to see if I can run that or not. (Can You Run It tells me I cannot, in fact, run this one either. :( )
