Some good shots in Chelco's blog:-
http://kriegsimulation.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/histwar-napoleon-released-today.html#more
looks much more polished than the first time out
Didn't see any mention of a grand campaign on the site...is it battles only?
I stayed away from the original because of all the negative comments I kept seeing in forums...I wonder how this will do?
looks prettier thats for sure, any beta testers amongst us?
I always find it hard to find useful information on that game's site....does it say anywhere as to when the new version is expected to come out? If you pre order now, do you get some kind of beta access soon?
Nevermind, looks like it is released...always wanted to try this game beyond the demo, but never got into it...hopefully someone takes the plunge and lets us know if worth it:)
I thought it was already out. He is just updated the graphics. Am I wrong?
I have to admit, I'm awfully surprised this game isn't bigger with this crew... Being a real time game with orders and command delay

Information from that site always confuses me, not overly clear. But I do think your right that for now it is just a graphics overhaul, but I believe they have other enhancements planned at some point.
I also agree that it is surprising how little this game is discussed in the wargaming circles. The type of game it is should be right up my alley since it doesn't require micromanagement. But when I tried the demo, just didn't click with me.

The original game did not follow standard interface conventions....and that put alot of potential players off. Also, there was a big issue with dynamic AI. Basically, the AI started out with one plan and stuck to it no matter what.
Some players also weren't comfortable with the concept. Basically the game worked best giving commands at the corps level. While you could order individual regiments, the game just didn't feel right at that level. Wargamers tend to be control freaks when it comes to moving units, so this aspect didn't always sit well with players.
Also, the initial release was plagued by bugs...and this did not help the game's reputation during it's critical release period.
Since then, the dev has done quite a bit of work making the UI be more comfortable. Hopefully the AI is better as well. However, I personally will wait a bit on this...to let the game settle and let those initial bugs shake out.
In terms of pluses...the original game had a full editor and even a points based force selection scheme. It had a great deal going for it. The mod community had even done a 100 days mod, and a peninsula mod that the dev eventually fully integrated into the game.
The dev has really stuck with his game...and you can tell it is a labor of love.
Is this a separate purchase?
Here is an AAR I did a few months back featuring the 1x1 unit representation.

Good question...I spent 5 min going through the site, and just got confused about what the price is and what you get for it. Some sort of tiered / timed release, but not very clear...at least to me.
Arizona tank, yeah I get what you're saying...of course I play Scourge of War and Chancellorsville and those types of games which had a similar command hierarchy type of structure. I love it but again his store didn't click with me either. cant figure out what exactly it was
If I am reading the conversion rates correctly, would cost me about $60 (for the lowest tier)...a little too much for me to gamble on this one right now. Hopefully they will do a new demo so I can test drive it first.

It's not just you....I was confused as well.
He is making it as an Alpha release or like a kickstarter program.
If you buy any version of Histwar Napoleon you get all the updates that are going to be made to the game from then on.
Unfortunately it is really not spelled out for you. I think some of it is the language barrier.
The way it is written, in two months you will have, let's say, the "Eylau" edition and so forth using Napoleonic battles names for the versions.
I bought the original and the new Napoleon game. The 2D is vastly improved as is the 3D. The AI and game mechanics are still pretty much the same for now, but that will be the main focus of the updates. Along with a 1:1 perspective.

How do you like the game? Are there any detailed reviews of the game anywhere? Not a lot of discussion in the English forums so really hard to gauge. On top of that, in order to even get access to post in their forums, you have to send the leader an email with your username and password for them to manually set you up. Not the best practice in the world where you give someone your password which is supposed to be private. I am sure they don't have any evil attempt, but nobody should ever know someone else's password. Unless upon first login it requests you to change it. I did send an email to see how it works, but haven't received any response which is another problem of the system where you have to wait until they have time to do it.
This along with the confusing info on the web site makes it hard for me to really want to explore this game....turning out to be too much work.
Is there a campaign?
I like the games, but I like being able to give orders from a generals point of view and watching my plans unfold or derail. I really loved the old SSG games that allowed that.
The one thing I really like about the new one, Napoleon, is watching a battalion/regiment go into all the different formations that you can use. I just get a kick out of ordering them around. The game is the only game so far that uses squares effectively and correctly. The AI will not let you just ride down it's troops.
I do not remember jumping through hoops to join the forum.I did join a few years ago so it must have changed.
At the moment there are no campaigns but that is also in the works.
I just read that you can copy over all the battles from the first game to Napoleon. I haven't tried it yet.
Most people played the first game only on the 2D map because although nice, it was not that great. The new 3D view is excellent.
I like Scourge of War but I still have problems dealing with insanity of the formations at times. Sometimes it looks like a madman directing a military tattoo.
You won't see that in these games, at least I never have.
I now remember something about in the not to distant future of being able to play out something as large as the Bavarian campaign in 1809. So the maps are supposed to get very large.
WhAt battles come with the new game? You mention copying the old ones and using which implies the battles are different than the first version.
Is the ai scripted or dynamic? Does each battle play out roughly the same all the time?
The AI is not scripted. They play out differently.
I believe five battles come with the the game right now. The older game had thirteen scenarios. The new one has eight.
There were also many different battles made by the forum members that will be or are good to use in the new game.
The game will also have a 1:1 scale in the future.
And of course there is a custom battle generator. This is the option that I usually use.
hhhmmm....this is starting to really sound like something I should try. I noticed the old version seems to have a reduced cost for something around $20 so might give that a try or just jump in with the new version.
For Magnus, thanks for all your detail, just one last question. Is there any value to purchase the old version at this point? Why would someone keep playing that version versus switching to the new version? Is it because the old version would have different battles then the new version, although I think you mentioned the old battles could be played in the new version? Just curious why they continue to sale the old version and say they will continue to update it.
well this looks like a must buy! favourite era and a game with command delays is always my preference - more realistic friction and fog of war. but the price is steep for now. That Histwar: Wellington will follow too is promising, though i am not so much interested in the battle of Waterloo but i guess this will follow more of his battles in Spain
For those that want to try a demo, here is a link I found in one of their forums. The current demo page no longer has it listed, since I am guessing they are preparing a new one for the latest version. This demo is for the old version, but can give you an idea about the gameplay if your on the fence.

I give up, I was more or less set on a purchase, but I have the old one, and I can't fathom out the new options, or costs... so I'll leave it. if the interface isn't getting an overhaul, consider me out.

That's a good metaphor for my whole experience trying out the older version. It was a confusing mess no matter how much I tried to get into it. It also didn't help that the graphics were looking very aged and the lines of soldiers were so similarly cloned that it put me off any immersion. The latter could've been less of an issue if the gameplay was pleasant but it was more on the painful side.
Unfortunately our experiences with the earlier versions looks to have scared many on trying the second. I also recall the price->value factor being a big issue before, as it was $60 or more last I checked a few years ago. I hope the guy(s) finally get it done right, but I haven't much faith after all this time. Looks like I'm not the only one. :-\

Have to agree...the more time I try and spend to figure out what they have to offer, the less inclined I am to jump in. Not sure why it has to be so difficult. What is worse is I would like to post in their forums to ask these types of questions but because of their crazy forum sign-up methods, I can't get access. Sent multiple emails to the place you need to for registration without a single response yet. Even in my email I said I was interested in the game, which you would think would help expedite things. But if this is an indication of their service for such a simple request, can't imagine how the other support might be. This company is missing opportunities by having hard to understand information and less than optimal processes.
Interested buyers like me are simply going to move on....maybe this is why I never picked it up in the first place.
^ I had the same problem registering at their site as well. It took JMM several days to respond so I could post in the forums.
This is an extremely indie team so the customer service is kinda of par for the course I guess. I have the previous game and I really want to get this but there's too much out there to play at the moment. I might let this bake for a while, the new campaign system seems promising though.
This game would really rock if they gave it the slick RTS UI that Wargame ALB has for example. The UI is the single most handicap of the game. There is something really unique about the histwar games that keeps me from totally writing them off.
One of the great aspects of the original game (that I am certain is being continued), is the historical fidelity in terms of uniforms and formations... Critical stuff for a recovering Napoleonics miniature gamer like myself. Take a French line regiment for example. The game displayed two battalions, 1 to 1 figure ratio, a command group with drummer in green jacket, sappers wearing aprons with axes and bearskins, voltigeurs, and grenadiers in their proper positions. Puts other games to shame in that area.
Also, the units fight using the tactics of the time. Skirmishers stick fairly close to their parent unit for example...unlike the HPS games where they run all over the place.
Also, as noted, the original game has all of the game editors you could want. I have fond memories of making my own battles with SSI's Battles of Napoleon, and Histwar is closest I have seen since.

Have to admit, I am pretty close to adding this as one of my impulse buys this weekend.....the last item that concerns me and hoping folks could provide some input. I downloaded the demo and played around a bit, it is still the old version but guessing from a gameplay perspective the same. Just not sure about the tactics and how you as a commander make a difference in this game. Seems like there are large amounts of soldiers and the maps don't seem that large. So what I haven't grasped yet as me being a corp commander, how do I really impact the game? I know I can have my troops march to certain points, deploy lines, and many different formations....but how do you really know what tactics to employ? I don't have a big background in this era of battles so that is likely part of the problem. I just want to make sure I have enough to do within the battle to make a difference and not so much just watch a movie on how things unfold. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to micro manage either so just trying to find the sweet spot of contributing without telling everyone what to do under common sense situations.
Still fires me up that I still can't get access to the forums since I am guessing that is the best place to get all this info, especially from the developers/testing team:(
Chelco's blog has some new pics of this up, looks really convincing for a purchase.
The histwar forums has a pic of the new work in progress UI. Looks really good and clean, and has a nice oob tree of the selected unit. Sounds like they improved the mouse controls which might be huge if that is true.
Really thinking of purchasing tonight....but....if receiving a response for my forum access equals how long it will take to get my game from them, just makes me hesitate. Too bad their service is like this.
Is it available via digital download? If so, why would you need to "wait" for the developer to do anything?

Pretty sure during the original release the developer sent out emails with info versus automated. Not sure if that is still the case, but just assumed. I would be glad to be wrong.
Hmmm....not sure. Seems to be unnecessarily complicated if that's the case.
I played the demo and I remember just downloading from a "download" button

Right...but for the game you need a key sent. Pretty sure I read some blogs that it took some people a day or so to receive. Could have changed with the new version...
I think when you purchase you get the download email link automatically ( check your spam filters).
The whole issue with forum access approval is a separate issue, JMM has to manually approve your account so there is a delay. He stated that it is like this due to site hackers gaining access then flooding the forums with spam.

That's great if that has changed from what I read of other peoples experience.....I do know this is separate from the forum access, although if that also wasn't an issue I could be asking the developer directly:)
By the way skoop, if you already have forum access over there would be great to create a post over there stating how some potential customers are viewing the painful process and lack of clear information:). Maybe will get them to check their email:)
I posted last night about the hoops and confusion people are worried/asking about and it is not only on this forum.
I was sent my serial keys for both games in my email after buying them.
The confusion on the download may have been that the game was offered for sale about two weeks before you were able to download and play it.
The game itself was less than $50 when I bought it. I am not sure if the price went up at all after it was released.
If you buy the least expensive version you get the game and all updates for it until it is no longer being updated. All the other options are just to try and raise money to keep the games coming.
It is exactly like kickstarter, but here you actually get a game when you buy in. The other levels give you the ability to get into the development forums and various other perks.

Thanks Magnus, appreciate you speaking up for us over there.....just hate to see lost sales purely based on confusion.
Well, based on the info about the game being available immediately, I went ahead and ordered. Looks like they have some good things planned for year so thought might as well jump in and start learning along the way. I did receive my game links immediately, which I am downloading the game now.
I'll post some screen shots and impressions as soon as I have had a chance to play a bit....

Agreed....part of the reason I took the plunge. Graphics looked much improved and I saw the screenshot of the new UI planned for next release, these were big deciding factors. Also looks like in that next release we will see some improved AI at the lower command levels. The game is a bit cheaper before xmas, so thought I should get in now, save a few bucks:)
I think I'm going to get it....but I wonder why there are no Prussians? I do t know a lot about the Napoleonic wars but weren't the Prussians involved in many of the battles? I get Austria, just wonder why the inclusion of Russia and not Prussia?
There was a good amount of modding and scenarios done for the older game by players, so one hopes that it would continue with the new one.
Remember this is the base game and there will be updates to it throughout the year.
I wouldn't normally stick my neck out, but going by the older game JMM does put out updates.
Graphically it is beautiful, I haven't done it yet but there are tweaks posted for Nvidia and Radeon cards. On my computer it is a little too dark, but seeing the screenshots I know I can work with it.
Right now the AI comes up with a plan of it's own. It is scheduled for you to be able to give the AI instructions so you could refight Borodino with the Russians staying put.

Thank you...looks like most of that config items is for NVidia, but I did try the few things mentioned for Radeon, not much of a difference. Although the graphics are a ton better than the prior version, mine are a little dark/blurry. Not showstoppers, but was thinking it would be a little crisper. Couple of other random thoughts so far, without much time in it yet.
- In general 3d view and symbol view much better than prior version
- One big issue I am currently having is when using the mouse scroll button to change zoom level in the 3d view, it gets stuck and completely blurs the screen. I have to exit the view and come back in to correct it.
- Different font colors used for things is questionable in some spots. For example, on the 2D map, when you draw your orders at least in the tutorials, the text is black and if you extend over other black objects like towns, you loose the information.
- Selecting units in 2d view to give orders by clicking on them sometimes tricky...takes hitting it just right to work
- They changed the orders menu from a list of text options to a bunch of graphic options...kind of liked the text options better since easier to see what you wanted
- In a few spots, the size of the text over runs the available space to display it
- As mentioned in a previous post, one of my concerns is having a ton of troops on small maps; not sure how tactical you can be at an army/corp level when you appear to have minimal room to maneuver
- I attempted to load user made scenarios from the old game into the new game and seemed to work just fine....this is great since gives you more to play with....also means if you have the old game, you can load the scenarios that came with it to expand your library.
Again, way too early to draw any conclusions....I have a lot to learn and expect this game to improve over time.
Magnus/skoop, do you know of a direct email address for support issues? I couldn't find on their web site anywhere. I know they have the support forum to post issues, but I have already beat that horse to death by stating I don't have access yet:)

Prussia was a major player in the Napoleonic wars. They fought for and against Napoleon in a number of campaigns between 1805-1815.
I've been interested in this game myself for quite awhile but have yet to see enough of an improvement with the system so far to go beyond the interest stage.
Hopefully, that will change in the near future.
Most of my interest in this era stems from this gaming company(OSG) that makes some very good boardgames on this subject.
I own a few titles from this company and would like to some day use the system from Histwar to recreate some of these campaigns and battles.
Here's a link to this interesting site.

It has been a week and multiple emails to the developer to get setup in their forum....not a single word yet.......very frustrating! Does not appear to be an easy/quick way to communicate with the company so can't even report issues that I have seen. Not sure how else to get their attention. I know it is a small group, but I think waiting a week for a simple item is a little over the top. What if I had problems with me game download or purchase? I would be stuck waiting forever to get a response.
Haven't had a lot of time to play it yet, but if this is an indication of things to come, thinking I should not have purchased it:(
I'll try another email again.......I am hoping those that have access to the forums can continue posting in the official forums the frustration of the "outsiders"...if this is impacting me, I am sure it is also impacting other potential/new customers.

Dayum. This stuff scares me even further away from it. :-\
I don't care about the delay to get on the forum so I may grab it anyway. I really want to play a tactical command game like scourge of war. Problem is that I have just grown tired of trying to wrestle around with the formations in Scourge. Units become so intermingled that it just becomes a big glob of units swinging back and forth. I know it's a command simulation but sometimes I NEED my troops to maintain some cohesion. Anyway
Will give this a try
Good, I am not the only one.
I keep playing SOW over and over expecting something different.
Then the enemy and my troops start doing a square dance that looks like it is being called by Bugs Bunny.
I just have to quit then because it is so annoying.

Although the delay on the forum frustrated me, my main concern was this might be an indication of the support I could expect. But now that I am by that, I will focus on the game itself. I can tell u the way I snuck into registering for the forum if u like:)
I am not sure I like some of the changes in the interface. In the older version things were more textual but now things have graphics and such. Might be me just getting used to it.

I often wonder how I was able to pass classes in both French and Spanish. I believe if let on my own I would just be able to find the correct bathroom in each country.
I thought the maps were supposed to be huge?
At least the maps I played so far seemed small. Not so much that there isn't a lot of territory, but you place 2 huge armies on it and feels very cramped in maneuvering. Seems like it would limit your strategy. But too early too know for sure.
does the 2d command section work as good as it looked on Chelco's blog?

I think the 2d command map is a great feature and seems to work very well. You can draw up your strategy it fairly easy to understand commands and have your troops execute the orders. I have read in other forums some players only play using this screen versus the 3d map. Personally, I like using both. I still have a lot to learn about it, but I think it will be good. Graphically it is improved over the new version, along with the mini map that displays on the battle map.
I also stand corrected on my earlier statements about not liking the new command interface in the 2D map....just found it there are two options available, the classic view and the new view. Best of both worlds in getting to choose the one I like. Nice touch.

Good, I am not the only one.
I keep playing SOW over and over expecting something different.
Then the enemy and my troops start doing a square dance that looks like it is being called by Bugs Bunny.
I just have to quit then because it is so annoying.
If you're having problems becoming immersed in SOW, I would be extremely surprised if you find Histwar an improvement. It didn't even come close when I tried it. ???

I haven't put enough time in with Histwar to really compare the two yet.....but what I can say is I found it very hard to control troops within SOW beyond the brigade level (i.e. army, corp, division, etc). Not sure if it is because of its implementation within the game or I am just not good at it, but regardless I could never handle it, I am hoping Histwar provides easier controls for that level of management and from what I have seen so far, it might actually click better for me. However from an immersion perspective, I think that has a lot to do with the time period/battles and what interests you. I prefer Civil War games since I know them better, but this time around I am kind of excited to learn about Histwars battles/tactics which I have very little knowledge.
In the end, I am hoping both games stay with me for a long time.

I like scourge of war and I do find the immersion. I just don't like that when I'm trying to set up an attack...once I launch it I get a big jumble of lines all facing in different directions and one guy over here, one brigade over here, another brigade wandering backwards to the woods so on it used to not bother me but for some reason now it does just looks unclean

did you buy it?
Not yet. I bring up the website and then I think "do I really feel like playing this right now?" Then go to something else
So any further reports from those who bought it?
Okay I took the plunge when I started it up every battle was orange like sunrise this orangish-red just red color that can't be right? anybody else seen this?
^ I think it's suppose to be a new effect like sunrise, it goes away as the battle goes on. I think it might be the lighting effects they added. Some people complained, some like it, might be preference I guess. I noticed the up close detail of the soldiers seems kinda blurry from the new shaders, I turned the shader 3 option off and the sunrise effect and blurriness are gone.
I messed around with the bagolino scenario last nite it was fun, but I still don't really know what I'm doing. The manual has a ton of great info on strategy / tactics in the Napoleonic era, but I feel like it doesn't help much in playing the game. I spend a lot of time in the 2d map for SA and periodically go to 3d to watch some of the action but I feel like a lot is going on around the battlefield that I'm missing. Would be cool for playability if they had a message dialog box that you could click and go right to that zoomed in view of the unit, but hey they didn't have real time SA in 1805 so I guess that's the point of this game.
Still a work in progress though.
Yeah your right...looked like sunrise because it was sunrise....I'm a Moron
Just played around for a bit in the Austerlitz battle. I do dig the new graphics. Once the cannons stated firing and the smoke started drifting, it looked like a painting. JMM did a great job with the soft light and tones

Not sure if you saw, but there is a dedicated new forum on histwar for the new version....I didn't see it at first, its at the top. Still has a mix of nationalities, but most appears to be n English. For the posts that are not, I usually use google translator and it works fine. I am unaware of any other forum that discusses the game, besides here at grogheads.

Are you experiencing sound issues with the new patch? Before they were fine...muskets were crisp. Now it's very echoey...like I'm listening in a metal barrel
Also, if anyone is interested, there is a "Peninsula war" mod and a "Waterloo" mod. Not user if they still work with histwar: Napoleon or only histwar:Lee Grognard.

How is the AI in the new version? The big limitation with HGLG was that the computer would build a dynamic battleplan at the start of the scenario, but then never change it, despite what was happening on the field.
Am wondering if this has been fixed.

Hasn't changed from what I read yet, but I believe ai improvements are planned for this version at some point this year in their roadmap.
another patch
http://www.histwar.org/forum/index.php/topic,7755.0.html
I have been trying to figure this game out but the tutorial is a disaster. At this point, I have one question:
Is it possible for me (in solo player mode) to draft an order to be sent out via courier to a subordinate unit? Similar to Scourge of war where you select from a list of text
1. Marshall Mikeck
2. Move your corp to this location
3. Form you corp into columns
4. Attack the enemy to your front at 0900 hours
Something like that where you issue orders that are sent out by aids as opposed to simply clicking on a unit and then clicking on a location.
Anyone know ??? Bueller....Bueller
I believe there is some text dialog that pops up when you give an order. If you play with command delays then you have to make sure you have aides de camp available which can be intercepted. It's not quit as detailed as the scourge of war one but similar effect.
Ok, thanks.
What is the method most people use to issue orders? Clicking on a . Corp commander and using the menu? or using dispatched orders. If I do the former, do I still need aids de camp? Manual is incredibly unclear on this

I haven't played a ton yet, but I don't recall seeing a dispatched orders command.....I only saw by using the menus. But maybe I just missed it. So far in my limited play, I use orders to the corp by the menu.
New small patch today....

And in case you missed, they now have a demo available for folks on the fence...

Oh cool, thats good as the new version is quite expensive.
One thing i wish is that for such a good and serious napoleonic warfare game as this, that it was named something better than Histwar - it is such an unattractive word for such a glorious era, always just makes me think of the word histamine. Thats an idle thing really though and not one that puts me off the game of course
Sorry for the thread necromancy...but has anyone heard anything about Histwar:Napoleon lately. I bought it back in December and the patches were coming out fast and furious. Forums were active and things looked good. About mid January everything just stopped. No real forum activity and no new patches. I don't speak French so I can't read JMMs blogs not the French threads.
I want to start getting into this game but I felt it still needed a few more patches...has it died?
I couldn't get the demo to download from that site and went here-

It says Demo05e2 and I have downloaded it.
Is this the current Demo?
It states that it was updated Jan.06,2014.

I think there's a major update due as per the original timeline. I think this next update is going to have the upgraded UI. It does seem to need to bake a little longer. I saw a thread about the peninsular war oob from grognards working in the new game.

Me too...I originally just picked it up when it was a cheaper price, knowing that it would take all the updates this year to really bring it to the right level for serious play. I knew that going into it so not really disappointed yet.

Histwar is diversifying.
Due to popular demand, Histwar will offer more versions.
Histwar: Austerlitz, the first of the series, will simulate the major battles of the Austrian campaign of 1805: Haslash, Elchingen, Dürenstein, Schrödingen and Austerlitz.
The historically accurate maps will recreate the battlefields where the armies of the 3rd coalition met.
At Austerlitz, on a battlefield of 190 km², maneuver your troops and lead them to victory.
The doctrine editor, an essential component of the game, will be available to help you regulate the default behavior of the more than one hundred units at your disposal.
Important: This new series will be available through steam. However, to this end, we need you to vote for us to get a "greenlight" to be published on steam.
Otherwise, the game development continues.
The artillery is getting a complete overhaul to improve its efficiency.
Other bugs (pertaining to cavalry or corps not responding...) are being fixed.
The new user interface is progressing although there will be some delay in implementing it.
The brigade and division AIs algorithms are completed. The grand tactical AI is getting significant improvements.
Thank you for your support,
New updates coming soon...
JMM
Awesome to see this on Greenlight -- definitely gets my vote.
Although I fear some of the promo video doesn't do the game any favors, the cavalry charges in particular. For gamers reared on Total War, those animations are not going inspire a lot of enthusiasm --
Yes, yes, I know HistWar is not Total War, but still --
Actually, I find the upgrades histwar: Napoleon graphics to be quite good. Scrolling out the landscape looks like a painting. The UI is a train wreck but apparently that is being addressed in the next patch. So I'm waiting on that. Will be a great game. Playable now if you can figure stuff out
How is the game doing now that it has "settled" a bit. Did the AI ever get fixed? ie. to support dynamic battlefield changes?
Not much has happened last few months. English forum is dead. Supposedly an update is coming soon but I haven't heard much. I check the update site occasionally but...nothing. Not saying it's abandoned but not much activity after a fury of patches months ago. Perhaps JMM is keeping it low key and plowing ahead. I don't speak French so I can't read the main forum.
Perhaps he will pop in here and advise?
Last path was January 6
I heard they were redoing the UI like two or three years ago. That still hasn't happened? :-\

Thanks for the update....I would love to see Histwar come together and reach its potential.
The UI in the newer game Napoleon is much different than the original one in Grognards.
Buying into the Napoleon project was pretty much like a kickstarter or early access.
Unfortunately being done by a single programmer, who I assume has a real life job, the work is slower and the updates happen less.
Did HW Napoleon get Greenlit?
I wonder what impact, if any, Scourge of War going Napoleonic will have on Histwar Napoleon in terms of release dates, sales, comparisions, etc?
Actually Napoleon itself is not up for Greenlight.
Austerlitz which is based on Napoleon, but smaller in scope is trying to be Green lit.

Since SOW is going Napoleonic, I don't think I'll bother with Histwar unless they do some pretty amazing stuff with updates. There's no contest if the SOW version is up to the same standards as the civil war ones.

Well a Napoleon game made by the French would naturally be more superior than a Napoleon game made by Americans.

Releasedate : First quarter 2015... maybe before :-)
HistWar, a unique gameplay for demanding players.
Built around a realistic AI, HistWar: Austerlitz immerses you in the Napoleonic battles of 1805 in an epic decorum where hundreds of uniforms shimmer on a sumptuous battlefield.
HistWar: Austerlitz will simulate the major battles of the Austrian campaign of 1805: Haslash, Elchingen, Dürenstein, Schrödingen and Austerlitz. These historically accurate maps will recreate the battlefields where the armies of the 3rd coalition met.
At Austerlitz, on a battlefield of 190 km², maneuver your troops and lead them to victory.
HistWar allows huge armies taking into account the historical chain of command and modeled after the orders of battle relayed by historians. It will have three different scales, 1/6, ½ and1/1. In the latter, each soldier will be represented by its own model (1).
Watch a charge of 1200 cuirassiers.... or observe the firepower of a deployed artillery battery where each canon is represented by a model.
No updates in over a year doesn't look good.
I can access the forums over here without a problem : http://www.histwar.org/forum/ (not much activity anymore it seems ... )
Yes I bought this about a year ago and I am very upset. I paid money for a game it was promised support and the developer for whatever reason has just given up on it. I should've known better based on what happen with the first iteration of this game but oh well lesson learned.
I also tried this awhile back....thought it had a decent start, but just seems like this game will never be fully supported by the developer. Haven't touched it in a very long time and unless some major update comes out, likely won't again.

Thanks...but I didn't need a Press Release on the game. I was looking for someone who actually played it. I was looking at histwar.com for the forum. That is where I was getting the forum error (500). Why is there a .org?
And thanks to the others that gave me feedback...I'll skip it.
I went to the forum on histwar.org and there has been some minimal activity, but nothing about status of the game. Looks like it went down the crapper.
Not sure if you saw, but they do have a demo you could try....
http://vds98.monespace.net/hw-com/game/demo.html
Again, I think it has some good ideas (I like the planning on the map) and if it was ever fully supported, probably could be a decent game....but in my opinion this developer has an erratic record even when he was first with Battlefront...its a shame.
I tried a demo of the first game...I'll look to see if there is one for the second. Demos to me are usually so limited that I only use them to see if the game will run well. I usually look at forums to assess progress. And HW's forums are a disaster. They seem to expose the cold hard truth that this JMM guy ran off with the money.
I didn't know it was on Steam until recently. I'll check that next. But just the limited feedback here pretty much says it all to me.

The demo is for the latest released version of the game Napoleon...as for Steam, I don't believe any version has been released there yet, I think they got a Greenlight on their next version to be there, but hasn't been released yet unless I am missing something. And based on past history, likely won't be released for awhile:)

Sorry, but I posted this quickly at midnight local time to give the link to the forums. The 'press release" was just to show that his new game (Steam Greenlighted) was supposed to be released in the first quarter of 2015 (hence why I put that in bold). The fact that it didn't release and that there is no news about it is also not good news for his present games.
Couldn't give any feedback as I stuck with Histwar Les Grognards and never got the new one (now i'm glad I waited)
Did noticed this posted by the developer a few days ago...."maybe" we will see some movement, although I won't hold my breathe. Find it hard to believe all that can be rewritten and tested in a very short time.

If this was anything but gaming software, the guy would have been arrested for fraud. In my business, if I took money and didn't deliver, there is a chance I would be seeing the local sheriff.

Did noticed this posted by the developer a few days ago...."maybe" we will see some movement, although I won't hold my breathe. Find it hard to believe all that can be rewritten and tested in a very short time.
**From Developer**
Hi,
Resuming my activity, I am working on the new patch. ;)
I am rewriting all code about the detection of collisions between units and units/inaccessible areas.
I hope this part will fix a lot of issues in the engine... no date but very high probability before XMas. 8)
Sorry for the delay...
JMM
I have long been a cheer leader for JMM and his quest for the perfect Napoleonic game. But if JMM stays his normal course the relationship between JMM and all of us in the Napoleonic fanboy club, is kind of like Michelangelo and Julius II in the movie the "Agony and the Ecstasy." The repeated and continuous exchange in the movie: Pope Julius II: "When will you make it end?" Michelangelo: "When I am finished."

Given the track record of HWN's development -- how is the dev's claim that a new patch will arrive with "very high probability" in the next 2 and a half weeks even remotely credible?
Going out on a limb here and predicting there is exactly 0% chance this patch arrives before the new year.

Well, to be fair......he didn't specifically say which Xmas so I guess it could be Xmas in 2050:)
JMM's a one-man show and I've always admired his hubris, but he really now seems more Tantalus than Perseus...
The notion that a French developer would approach a Napoleonic game differently isn't really that strange. Just compare, say the Pratzen Editions' approach to that of La Battaile. Both insightful...quite different...

So, define for me hubris - to me it's pretty much synonymous with hype
Well, either way, I bought a partially finished game. At least is playable
By hubris I mean he's regularly bitten off more than he can chew...all the way back to when his Austerlitz was in the keeping of Matrix Games. The story of his relationship with BFC would likely prove interesting reading. He wants this engine to do so much, to be so much, but it just seems to keep slipping from his grasp.
He reminds me very much of a MUCH, MUCH more gentlemanly Derek Smart.

Agree, JMM actually seems to like the people who play his games.

A French Peter Molyneaux.
Nah, Molyneaux's either deeply deluded or pathological...never been able to decide which.
JMM came within spitting distance of a great Napoleonic game with Histwar LG. Here's hoping he does it this time.

RPS decided pathological ...
