the water based paints available to today are actually better, last longer and have more color options then the old enamels.

And the clean up is soooo much easier!

The light has been so bad I've had little time to get on with this - but there have been some days lately where the sun was out - so I managed to get a few bits on and give a second coat.

Next up is a shiny coat, decals and some weathering - something which I bought some solutions for but haven't really had the nerve to use yet.

I was thinking about putting a brown camo on - but a) I don't think I have the right brown (this green isn't actually the right green for the Flying Tigers anyway) and b) I kind of like the Olive Drab...it just might look weird with the Flying Tigers emblems - so when it is complete, just use your imagination that the aircraft has just been delivered to the Flying Tigers my the USAAF.

^I'm partial to olive drab so it looks good to me.

Nice!

I was just thinking of a AVG model the other day and here you are posting yours. Jolly good show! :)

AVG model?

Well - I put the wheels on and the wheel doors and put some Florry Models weathering solution on. First time I've really used it and ws very wary. It seemed to take more rubbing off than the videos I watched suggested. Not totally sure I've done it right - but we live and learn.

Next (tomorrow) is some Klear, the decals, the solutions for the decals, some more Klear to seal the decals and then (possibly) some more weathering solution.

You can see where this models fuselage didn't quite "fit" with the central intake(?) on the top in front of the cockpit.

AVG = American Volunteer Group.

AKA, the Flying Tigers :)

Didn't we have this AVG discussion already, or am I stuck in a causality loop?  :o

I think we did.

Sorry  :)

Proof positive of my very bad memory!

So - the finished product

So - my list of screw ups this model?

  • Put the weathering solution on before the Klear making it more difficult to take off
  • It was clear to me which part of the Tiger to put on first (it came in 2 parts!), and on the left side of the aircraft I put them on the wrong way round. I had already put Micro Sol on - and so couldn't reverse the problem (why did the emblem come in two parts and why did it not say in the instructions which way to put them on?
  • Didn't totally align the fuselage before glueing and therefore there's a slight but noticeable mis-alignment
  • Didn't use the correct colours and stayed with Olive Drab (not so much a mistake but a choice really)

Apart from that, I'm pretty pleased with the outcome - shame about the weathering - but I'll learn!

And this is my collection at present. These are the ones I have kept because I'm reasonably proud of them.

I've always loved each of these aircraft. The He-111 is a Hasegawa 1:72. The Mossie is a Tamiya 1:48, the B-27 is an Academy 1:72 and the P-40 is an Academy 1:48.

You can really tell the difference in the build between cheaper models (Academy) and decent models (Tamiya and Hasegawa)...but I like the Academy because they are very cheap and actually scrub up ok.

nice

Just a few heads up if you like.

Try look for a games workshop, they have a whole range of waterbased colors. They very easy to work with and if you water them down correctly you can actually paint without getting the stripes. Or invest in a paintgun. the one from GW even has a special holder for their paints so you can see how much paint and water to fill in. And dont worry paintguns arent really that hard to use, and with a little practice you can get great camo effects etc

Also from GW is a new filler product which is semi liquid. With a little practice it works great for filling holes etc

Excellent build JD! Each new build, you learn new things! Like the B17!
