The problem is that the Norks are stupid enough to sink a South Korean warship and shell a South Korean island. So they may not be stupid enough to start lobbing nukes, but they are still pretty stupid.

Watched a documentary on North Korean refugees from about 10 years ago on Netflix...called Seoul Train. I couldn't help but pity the regular North Korean people. They're being held hostage.

About a year ago a book was released detailing the horrific conditions experienced by several refugees. I have chosen to not seek it it. I'm getting too old to dive that far into the depths of depravity.

There was a quote at beginning of the doc I watched that I've seen before, but with this movie it was particularly true: North Korea is the world's biggest prison. Somewhere someone must be benefitting from North's existence, besides the Kims.

I also remember seeing similar talk about the difficulties that would be faced by a whole Germany when the Berlin Wall came down. Granted 25 years later and Eastern Germany is still being given life by the West. I wonder how long it would take South Korea and the world to bring North Korea back into the fold.

The main difference here is that East Germany wasn't overtly, regularly threatening to destroy the West.

The NORKs are saying they will funnel more resources into their nuke program making it more central to their military first society. This is a great example of what happens when you have a military economy. The people starve. At some point the military has to do something to justify it's existence. IE attempt to annex something, attack something, blow shit up, make belligerent statements. Maybe the generals are pushing Kim to get him killed?

I'm reminded of a game of Civ where the Amazons were highly aggressive. They kept putting everything into their military to attack. I kept advancing my tech using short stacks of phalanx on mountains to defend. I had a catapult in every stack to counter. Finally I got annoyed enough that i parked a battleship in their harbour. They would churn out men then throw them at the battleship. They pounded themselves back to city size 1. I Finished it for them.
