OK - I'm registered.  Xisko, human fighter.  Would rather have a spear & shield, but stuck w/ a longsword for now.  Will futz w/ it more later when I have time.  Still need to join the guild, but will worry about it later.

Pretty sure I read something that said only monsters can have spears.  Could be wrong though.  I am supernoob as this is my first MMO evah!

Yeah the spear is not a weapon available to player characters.

Fighters tend to be two weapon, two handed, or sword and board.  The flavor of the month has been two weapon fighters with khopesh, but I tend to buck the flavor of the month min/max characters and play what the hell I want to because it's more fun that way.

For example I have a halfling fighter.  He's only uses light weapons; light mace, hammer, short swords, daggers.  He's pretty craptacular compared to the uber builds but I have fun with him.

A drow, a tiefling, and a half-orc are standing on the roof of a burning building. Their only possible escape is to jump into a blanket held by a group of humans on the streets below.

The drow is the first to approach the edge. "Jump!" yell the humans. "It's your only chance!"

Seeing no other alternative, the drow jumps off the roof. The humans pull away the blanket, leaving the drow to splat on the street, dead.

Next is the tiefling. "Come on, you have to jump!" the humans shout.

"I don't think so," the tiefling responds. "You're just going to pull away the blanket and leave me to die!"

"No we're not!" the humans yell back. "It's just drow we don't like. We're fine with tieflings!"

Convinced, the tiefling jumps off and goes splat as the humans pull back the blanket.

Only the half-orc remains on top of the burning building. "Hurry up and jump or you're gonna burn!" the humans shout.

"Nothing you humans say is gonna convince me you won't pull away the blanket," the half-orc responds. "So before I jump, I want you to set the blanket on the ground and back away."

I take no credit for this joke.  I stole this off something called the internet.

that sucks that humans can't use spears.  my all-time favorite character was a half-elf spear & shield fighter with some ass-kicking at-will attacks that were pumped up by some combat feats.

One thing to note on DDO is that those characters you loved in PnP are not so viable in how the game is setup.

My all time favorite character was a 1/2 Orc Cleric/Thief.  He only used items he found and loved copper.  Bags and bags of copper.  I'm trying to figure out a viable build similar to him in DDO.

I so totally suck at this game.  Most of the time, I have no idea what I'm doing.  And my mic is broken.  Both of them :(  Windy and Bison are very kind to be so patient.

You'll get it eventually.  I was totally lost the first few times I played the game too.
