While poking around on my account screen to see if I could change my email to my alternate (in case compuserve was blacklisted for some reason), I noticed I had checked "Turn Email Notifications".

Because in my mind, that translates to "send me notifications by email when the next turn is ready to play".

But on a beta site that might mean "Turn Email Notifications" off. (And someone forgot the off.)

So I've unchecked that, and asked them to resend verification email.

Hasn't occurred yet.

A few hours later: still hasn't occurred, although I got the silliest attempt at hacking my computer imaginable. ;)

Okay, tech (mech? do they eat at techmech restaurants?  ;D ) support said some people have trouble receiving the verification email, so they sent me one directly, and I'm in.

Tried to buy a Founder's package through Paypal, but Paypal didn't entirely finish the transaction for some reason. Don't know why. Will be keeping an eye on it to see if it finally goes through.

Checking on MWT's forum, there have been extremely suspicious problems using Paypal since January: apparently MWT is using a service (Payspan) widely regarded on Google as fraudulent!!!

I have no idea what's going on there. 

It's of no consolation, but I paid with my PayPal account and it was done in seconds.  Do you have some overzealous anti-virus program or something? *shrug*

I also use Firefox & was only properly charged by Payspan.

I have Norton's, which is due to expire next month. Never given me a problem on this, though. (I'm using Firefox but it's an older version for MacOS10.4.11.)

I saw reference to UltimatePay in that thread, too, and it seemed as though MWT had switched to them, but Payspan was who the link actually went through still.

I also saw something in the thread to the effect that, for one person, the problem was an overzealous security system that saw some kind of disagreement between how the billing address was typed, but going through Paypal shouldn't be an issue there.


After a couple of days to make sure there's no weird activity after the cancellation, I'll try again from my updated Firefox Win8 (with WinDefender) at the house.

Update: Mech-support dealt with the problem and buying access to the closed beta worked through Paypal this time. So I'm in.

Still no email notifications; I have found the forum console (finally) that deals with this and that should fix the problem, but why new members don't automatically default to having email notifications of important things like WHETHER I'M ACTUALLY ABLE TO DO THINGS NOW or BETA KEYS, I have no idea.

Relatedly, I still have no beta keys. Not sure if I need them or what. Were they sent with my non-existent notification that my membership was approved? No idea.


Still, I can verify that yesterday even people with an old MacOS10.4 version of Firefox could use Paypal to buy a membership, so yay. :)

I check to see what all I got as email confirmation.  I got two emails with payment and order # info shortly after putting it in.  I was able to log into my game account right after.

I dunno why you've had so many issues, so I'll just blame it on your Mac.  :P

Im a bit sad that I can't play the game on my Linux box, because Unity isn't supported on Linux (at the moment) :(

Since I'm about to go under the NDA, I'll report that I've been told that beta keys aren't necessary; by which possibly (update: certainly) is meant that buying a founders package automatically goes around the need to have a beta key (since I'm pretty sure I didn't dream that the site kept talking about needing a beta key).

Anyway, I don't think I've disclosed anything that couldn't be found out by anyone just trying to sign up for the program. Hereafter I must be silent. Aside from occasional vague squees perhaps. And also BRING IT UNDERGEEK!!!  8) I have an Atlas now. Atlases are cool.

(But seriously, Grogheads should sign up pronto, although I see several have done so already. I will try not to use all the win I bought to win, as I actually do want to test how to grow from initial buy-in scratch or whatever. I just like having leeway, and I want to reward the efforts of the devs for doing this at all.)

Whether it will actually work for you, who knows, but Paypal was accepting them yesterday, and some people have had no problems at all.

I'll pass along a point of note which I could have read in the public Founders FAQ but didn't (so I also infer this is public information not NDA data). Everyone in the closed beta starts off with the same things (aside from a difference in scrap) regardless of which package is bought. The goodies specific to the two higher packages don't get delivered until the game goes to open beta.

So I won't have my Atlas for a while, even though I have an extra 100K worth of scrap metal to buy cards with. (That's also public information, btw, found on their own webpage: I don't know whether there is an in-game market aside from players dealing with one another, but at the moment pieces of the Mechs as well as pilots are bought in card packages known as STACs, just like a collectable card game. As you might expect those contents are randomized. So it currently isn't like in previous Battletech computer games where you can buy your gear from a market. I don't know whether they're planning to implement this later, and I probably couldn't say yes or no if I did know, since that seems like NDA data.)

While scrap can be burned in Closed Beta, we'll get all our scrap back again once open beta hits, or so says the FAQ. People who buy a Founder's package for early Closed Beta access won't be risking scrap during closed beta while portions of the game are in post-alpha mode. (This allows people who buy in now to play with the scrap in testing without fear of losing its value.)

Update: a publicly available clarification on this from the Founder's FAQ (accessible from the screen where people can buy Founder packages) -- once open beta starts all progress will be reset to square one, at which time the extra goodies will also be unlocked. So if I conquer all human worlds before then, don't worry, the game will reset me for open beta. ;) But at that time I'll also get the Atlas that was part of my Founder's package.
