This discusses the future of gaming. It's specifically about the new Xbox One, but more importantly discusses the overall impact of the gaming market as it shifts from consoles to handheld/tablet devices.

Longblade, I'm surprised no one, so far, has commented about this clip. So according to the guest "authority" in the interview, gaming interest is down from 2011 and the Xbox One hopes to capitalize on this by making the Xbox One the all-in-one entertainment system for TV, gaming, Internet, etc.

I've not had a console system since about 1992 with the Sega Genesis. Once I discovered gaming on the PC I haven't looked back. One reason was I wanted a system to do more than just gaming, like word processing, database, desktop publishing, etc. Also gaming on the pc was progressing and getting more sophisticated with increased processing power, memory, graphics, and sound.

Another reason for my one choice for gaming was economic. My 6 kids went through NES, Sega, Sega Genesis, Atari Lynx, Turbografx. It was expensive to keep the consoles fed with cartridges. After a few years I mainly only purchased pc games for them and they seemed satisfied. Now only one son has all the consoles and several pc's (he's single and fairly rich). It's likely he'll purchase the new ones.

While the consoles have benefits and some neat games never released on pc I will stick with my homemade powerful computer. I'm more selective than before in the quantity and quality of pc titles I buy. Maybe my game paying hours are waning a bit when I come to think of it as I get older.

So the clip from Longblade has generated two questions. 1.) Are your gaming days waning? and 2.) Are you contemplating purchasing one of the new systems from Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo?

The analyst keeps mentioning a shrinking gaming market. But does this represent fewer console gamers, or market saturation?
The Xbox 360 been around since Nov 2005, the PS3 since Nov 2006. There are now several years worth of games on the used market.

Well, first I thought that perhaps not that many console players are around here, then I thought they are just not interested in the topic, now I'm not sure if it is like it is often for me - that new postings/threads don't show up when I press the 'Show unread posts since last visit' button...

They are showing up for me but sometimes I get 3 pages of new unread posts/topics that I have not posted in and sometimes I get half a page. In any case I also think not too many people peruse the console section of this site's forums. :(

Well most modern used games need to be re-bought as the online (mulitplayer) tickets have been used already.

Except for very occasionally, I don't play my 360 any more. And I will not be purchasing any of the new consoles. Not only is it a money thing, I have none, but, I reside exclusively on the PC now. The games I like are here and I don't watch any tv except for Game of Thrones, Sons of Anarchy and sports.

^^That's exactly my take on tv as well MetalDog. In fact I don't watch tv period. Except for the Regular Show and Adventure Time with my kids.

What the bleepity bleep bleep am I going to do with an XBOX One that seems to be more focused on watching movies, tv, and skyping than gaming?

Right now I can't even play my beloved 360 which I've been addicted to for over a year now because of the XBOX reveal. :(

LOL and I thought I was overreacting yesterday when I had a bad feeling in my stomach after turning on the 360 only because I'm so royally pissed at M$. But after a few rounds of Puzzle Quest 2 I forgot about the dark clouds at the horizon for our hobby...at least for a few hours.

It feels like your friend from a long time suddenly and deliberately back stabbed you. I'm probably over reacting but passion is a part of life. I so want to play Dark Souls and Dragons Dogma right now but I still can't look at my 360 and think about M$ and their greed. LOL

In other news, I picked up Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes last night for PC and I'm really liking it. I'm even considering reviving my love for board wargames and will be visiting my local hobby store this weekend to see what I can get.

One part I fully agree with is the following statement by Forbs. "Even though I point the finger at consoles in this piece, PC gamers sitting in their ivory tower laughing at console peasants are not immune from this sort of critique. The PC offers even less gameplay innovation than all the others combined, content to simply outstrip everyone graphically from now until kingdom come. All these years later, we're still just clicking our mice and hovering our fingers over the number bar, QWERTY or AWSD.
