I think I have taken on too much complexity for one evening. I am tempted to buy the newest Tomb Raider and stare at digital bewbs...

Ironic, a friend of mine recently gave me a free copy he had on steam.  Just got around to playing it this weekend... Awesome, but short, game.   It isn't classic tomb raider, but what it does it does great.   Thoroughly enjoyed it.  And yes, she's still hot... In a digital kinda way.

What in the world do you find some complex about RoF?

It couldn't be easier.  The planes have almost no gauges.  All you have to do is fly, point your nose at the bad guy and pull the trigger. 

You have a map to show you where you are, and if you turn off complex engine management, once you push the throttle to the stops for the most part you can leave it there until you land, where you just pull it back into your lap.

I'm not getting the complexity here, Gus.

Yeah but you're a pilot. I'm not. I just find keeping my plane airborne more challenging and my control of the plane more difficult than it should be. I don't know...maybe I'm thinking too much. I know I can simplify everything in RoF too but I don't want to make it too arcadey. It doesn't help that I haven't flown a sim since I was a kid.

Added to the above whining is the fact that I was trying to get my TrackIR fo work last night amongst other things and it was not cooperating.

Gus this might be something as simple as what kind of kit are you using to fly.  I've only got brief experience with RoF.  First time I tried to fly I was using one of those $20 joysticks and struggled a lot to keep the plane airborn let alone attack the enemy.  I think purchased a decent HOTUS and the flying got much, much easier.

Couple of things to check.

First, make sure that you start the TrackIR software before you start up the game.

Second, RoF uses some of the same key bindings that TrackIR uses and this can cause conflicts.

Make a RoF profile for Track IR and remap the F7, F9, and F12 keys to something else suck as up, down, and right arrow.

Third, use a USB connection on your PC tower rather than a USB hub or a USB port on your keyboard.  TrackIR sometimes gets squirrely if it's not getting the full amperage.

Fourth, check your list of supported games just to make sure that Rise of Flight is listed there.  If not, update the game list.



I've attached a copy of my RoF TrackIR profile.  Just unzip it and then place the .xml file in your NaturalPoint/TrackIR5/Profiles/ folder.  Then start Track IR, click the Titles tab about halfway down the left hand side of the screen.  Scroll down to Rise of Flight and click the "default" entry in the profile column and replace it with the Rise of Flight profile.

See!  Toonces is right, RoF's not at all complicated!  Seriously, though, I think it has less of a hump than a full-on wargame because you can be doing something pretty quickly.  Despite SDR's post above, Toonces is right, the serious learning is more about flying and practising than reading and understanding a manual.

I was casting about for a game to go with War and Peace which I'm re-reading at present, and downloaded the Histwar demo.  It's just sat there on the desktop as I know I'll have to read and inwardly digest most of the 400-page manual before doing anything else.  At least with RoF you can play and learn at the same time.

Thanks SDR, TrackIR software was running, and Tuna sent me a profile to use. RoF is listed as supported and I am using a USB connection on the PC tower. I'll have to futz with the key bindings.

Ted it's non of the hardware stuff that gets to me it's the seemingly long time it is taking me to get a feel for RoF. 20 years ago I would have been much quicker. I'm losing patience with myself!
