I thought I read somewhere that you can only take charge of one battle/turn, and the rest have to be auto-resolved. Can SoM confirm that?

I just now confirmed this. You control one battle and you either have a general-less army auto-resolve for free or you pay a general 5 gold to auto-resolve with a better chance of victory (depending on their specialty).

I'm really digging the political aspect. The sheer amount of conversation and dialog options makes the game feel more like an RPG.

I would say this would be extremely boring and not very successful. Part of the draw is playing the flying dragon of doom, turning the tide of a battle by blitzing everything in your path. In that, the game is a little like Sacrifice (an obscure reference, but bound to be understood by these learned readers). The political stuff is fun, but not a game in itself. Also, the impact of political decisions show up on the battlefields, so you would miss the repercussions of your decisions. Otherwise, the game is just moving dudes around, sort of like Risk.
