Wargame: AirLand Battle

Im starting to see the light here.  recon, infantry and patience.  and a whole lot of micro managing air power.

That's what got me through the 2nd campaign. :)
I even skipped ordering a lot of tanks.

first order of the day is sticking the opfor in place.
second order is pounding them with arty.
third order is pounding them with air.  F-111s and F-117s are simply wicked.  Im learning how to dual role the F-18s as they seem to be one of the only NATO planes that can launch a Maverick and then turn and shot a bitch down.  the catch to the whole air thing is hitting the leading edge of your opponent while still being within the cover of your AAA and SAMs.  those bitch ass Su-27s can try and make their run until a swarm of Rapiers, Stingers and 20mm say high.  thats where the micro management comes into play.

Have you mastered staying on the fringe of your air to air missiles range and using long range attacks yet?

no.  but then again I havent needed to really because of the way Ive been layering my AAA/SAM systems.   theyve been taking out commie fighters before I can get mine airborne  8)

if youre playing the AI and franticly mousing all over the place your doing something wrong.  initial deployments and unit selection are very key.

love your F-117's.  they do seem to be quite remarkable.  Ive got 2 attached to the 82nd and between them theyve taken out at least a divisions worth of stuff.

Yeah seems to be better than the A-10 in taking out ground targets.
The A-10 can stay longer in the air and keep attacking but it dies faster in the process.
The F-117, due to stealth and just one bomb, can fly in unmolested, drop the bomb and head back home to rearm.

I use high numbers of IR SAMS to take out 117's.  Because of the EF-111's I hardly use any radar based AAA at all.  ZSU-57's against helicopters, Strela and Iglas both handheld and BRDM based.  I may occasionally use a Kub.

PACT excels in missiles.  Everything shoots a missile and shoots a LOOOOONG way.  The BMPT is an urban clearing machine.  Hinds are phenomenal.

However...I haven't found a good mix of PACT air assets that I can count on.  Most are just fodder for NATO fighters or SAMs.  I often only have 1 aircraft in my decks, usually a fighter just to harass NATO helicopters until the ZSU-57's can get there.

this wouldnt bug so much except that 25's never had guns.

my response was to restart the battle and set up a SAM net around my FOB.  then I brought in the F-15 to circle over it and draw out the planes.  6 Yak-38, 3 Mig-25 and 4 Su-25s later and Im happy.  I then went on to kill every damn AA platform and helicopter with EF-111s and Varks.  I cant wait for the next battle.

and before anyone wonders how a F-111 kills helicopters...
it cleary states in Robert Shaws Air Combat that the best way to kill helicopters is with cluster munitions.
for all you flight sim people out there pick up that book and thank me later.
