They're based on a German RPG system called "The Dark Eye," which seems to be as deep as 3rd Edition D&D or Pathfinder. The game world is a pretty traditional fantasy world, with an amount of lore that seems equal to Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights. 

Play feels pretty close to NWN2.  It's party-based and pausable.  Graphically it's pretty close to NWN2. The writing is pretty good; quests are sensible and serve to move the story along, there are a fair number of side quests, and combat is tactically interesting.  Dungeons are a good length and variable.  One thing I really enjoy is that the landscapes and particularly the urban environments are nicely detailed and really fit the established lore - places look like they should look, down to mountains and forests appearing in the correct directions if you examine any of the maps from the tabletop game.

A big plus for me (particularly after 500+ hours of Skyrim) is that your character is just an adventurer.  You aren't some unknown demi-god that spends the first half of the game learning about your special powers and then the second half using them to save the world from some unspeakable evil.  Yep, there's evil, yep, you and your pals are out to fight it, but you aren't the Dragonborn.

Nothing about the plot of any of the games will make you go "Wow, I didn't see that coming!" If you're looking for an enjoyable traditional fantasy RPG that is story driven and not loot driven, though, they're quite a lot of fun.

Okay, spider armies in region all gone.  Yay! 



New problem, though:  My borders are beginning to encroach upon different armies sitting out there in the wild...and these are both significantly larger and terrifyingly powerful (we're talking armies rated Deadly/Epic) -- my guys don't have a chance in hell against them right now.  :o 

I'm only playing on the easiest difficulty level, so they don't attack (thank the gods), but they're going to be a problem much sooner than later.  Methinks it's time to switch over from Civilization to Warfare techs...

I also got a wild hair and loaded up CK2 last night at 11:30 just to play a few minutes of my long abandoned Byzantine Count game, and ended up playing until 3AM. That almost makes me afraid to take the plunge and buy EUIV.

Since my current EU4 game is entering it's final century, I've decided to start a marathon game of CK2->EU4 using the converter in between. 

It's difficult figuring out where I want to start, in an 867 'The Old Gods' point.  It should probably be somewhere close to Europe, but I've been wanting to try forming the Persian Empire in EU4.  Starting as a Zoroastrian in 867 is a tough start, since you're surrounded by Islamics who want to squish you. 

I'm also not a big all-out warfare oriented player when it comes to most Paradox games, as I enjoy the other facets more. The warfare system isn't all that great other than March of The Eagles being a noticeable improvement and it probably will not be adopted for future Clausewitz titles (unfortunately).  So being in constant warfare isn't all that fun for me.  It's the scheming, trade, colonization, and diplomacy.  All this means that the constant warfare of a Zoroastrian start would probably feel like a burden.

Hrmm.. decisions.  Perhaps a start as Rurik is in the cards.  An anglo-saxon Brit suffering through lots of viking raids?  I dunno, but whatever it is, there will be almost 1000 years of it.  :o

If the Prince and the Thane mod for CK2 gets updated sometime soon (within the next month), I want to start a game as the Hapsburg count and see if I can repeat their historic successes. If it doesn't get updated I may go with the CK2+ mod or even vanilla.

That's what I like about the Paradox games as well. One of my favorite parts about the HRE (in both games) is the internal politics of it. The scheming and horse trading to try and get tot the top.

I've never made it through an entire campaign. I get to a point where I feel like I've accomplished my goals for that campaign then I restart as someone else. Hopefully, having the Ck2 => EU4 converter will help me at least get through a CK2 campaign. Now all that we need is a EU4 to Vicky 2 converter.

I've been playing lots of Animal Crossing this weekend.  8)

I've got four of those same kits J.D.  The treads are the tricky part as no amount of glue will keep them in a loop that will then allow you to get it over the rollers.  I've tried gluing the tread together while it is on the rollers but it just came apart anyways on two of the four kits.  Let me know if you find a good way to do it.

What will you be using the mini for?  That 1:72 scale is a good one for Force on Force.  That's what we're planning on playing later today.  I have a T-72 tank that came in Friday along with a box of Taliban fighters.
