I haven't tried the L-1011 yet, but the PMDG 737 is amazing.  I have several payware add-on aircraft now, but none of them even come remotely close to the 737.  I highly recommend it.

It looks awesome!  Is it hard to learn? Or do they give you a good tutorial?  Lol the idea of a 2500 page manual is scary!

But again, in the videos if found it looks awesome!

It does take a bit of an investment to learn.  Mostly, you have to figure out the basics of the FMC.  The plane runs off of the computer, so if you don't take a few minutes to set it up it is not easy to fly.  For example, you have to set up the weight and balance first (the FMC will calculate it but you have to press the right buttons) so the jet knows what power setting to use for takeoff.

Once you get airborne you'll want to use your autopilot and, again, you have to have the FMC set up for it to work properly.

I think I spent about 2 hours working through the tutorials and reading and I now have a fair idea of how to get from A to B.  The only part that is a bit of a soup sandwich is setting up my approach using ATC vectors.  I'm not sure how to effectively set up an RNAV or ILS approach using the FMC once I get vectored off the flight plan.  I can do it, but not the right way.

The jet comes with a quick start tutorial that teaches you enough to get flying pretty quickly.  It's not that hard to learn the basics.

Jarhead - Yeah. You're probably right.

Gus - I use sweatpants with flannel shorts to soak up my crotch sweat.

Banzai Cat - There is no "partial credit" in grammar. Like anal sex. It's either in, or it's not.

Mirth - We learned long ago that they key isn't to outrun Star, it's to outrun Gus.

Martok - I don't know if it's possible to have an "anti-boner"...but I now have one.

Gus - Celery is vile and has no reason to exist. Like underwear on Star.

Ordered the PMDG 737 NGX from Amazon!.. It was ten dollars less than most places, and I used 25 bucks worth of Amazon Points.. so great deal!...

Lol, now I just gotta get REX, UTX and Air Hauler!

Have any of you guys tried the Carenado planes? Getting REX makes me want to get some small add ons as well.. the Accusim one seems a lil expensive, but seeing how good the b-17 is, it may be worth it.. But seeing adds about the Carenado planes, I'm wondering are they high quality?

jomni

Yes. Carenado planes are high quality.  Especially the graphics.
They are not sophisticated aircraft so nothing to comment about regarding systems.
Documentation can be a hit or miss.  Most of the time they only give you a check list.
They don't really teach you how to fly the plane.

If you want a really good general aviation aircraft.  A2A's C172 Trainer is the best I've seen.
It's got  a lot of simulation happening under the hood and the maintenance aspect is a big feature.
It feels like you really own the plane.

Here are a couple of points from the features list that is noteworthy (not found in other add-ons... even airliners).
Quote

  • Immersive pre-flight inspection system designed by pilots while operating the actual Cessna 172..

  • Persistent airplane where systems, corrosion, and temperatures are simulated even when the computer is off.

  • Complete maintenance hangar internal systems and detailed engine tests including compression checks.

  • Designed and built to be flown "By The Book."

By the way, I have not bought it because I'm mainly an airline pilot but it sure is tempting.

I did not read all 2500 of the manual.  Just used the tutorial and my prior experience flying airliners in FSX.
You can subscribe to Angle of Attack's (http://www.flyaoamedia.com/) 737 school. Watching videos sure beats reading the manual. But it is more expensive than the plane it self!  :o
I subscribed to their 777 tutorial which is cheaper and they are really good. So the 737 must be good as well.

I also have the PMDG 777 which is equally good or even better than the 737.  But this big plane is very automated.  Easier to learn with less button presses.  So the 737 might still be the more fulfilling one to fly.

Tuna

737 rocks!!.. I'm very disapointed with the tri star but it was only 8 bucks thanks to you, so not a big loss!
