You can play solo online. Just you against zombies, other players, and hunger. That's how I play.

Oh man, this game is making me seriously motion sick.  That hasn't happened to me in a long time.

I'm going to have to figure out what's causing it.  Gotta take a break, I feel like I'm gonna barf!   :(

:o I'll have to see what that's all about. I'm too tired to stay awake waiting for the D/L so I'll check (Czech?) it out tomorrow or saturday. Hopefully what you are experiencing is just a cinematic effect that can be toggled off.

did you check the video options and refresh rates?
Jarhead - Yeah. You're probably right.

Gus - I use sweatpants with flannel shorts to soak up my crotch sweat.

Banzai Cat - There is no "partial credit" in grammar. Like anal sex. It's either in, or it's not.

Mirth - We learned long ago that they key isn't to outrun Star, it's to outrun Gus.

Martok - I don't know if it's possible to have an "anti-boner"...but I now have one.

Gus - Celery is vile and has no reason to exist. Like underwear on Star.

Yeah, a bit.  I'm not ready to pin this 100% on the game; I've been sick lately and I'm not feeling too hot to begin with so I'll post more re: motion sickness once I log some more time in it.

I did log another hour or so this evening, but it was night time on the server so there was no real motion sickness since I could barely see anything.

On my first character, I spawned during the day.  Walked inland and onto what I think was one of the airfields.  The server was at 39/40 and I know that spawning into a high population server is a bad call, but since it was my first game I just picked the server with the lowest ping.  Anyway as I got to the airfield and started looking around I saw a guy running around apparently unarmed, and another guy at the top of this building with a rifle of some sort.  I waved at him, hoping to convey my friendliness and he waved back and didn't immediately start shooting so I was hoping I was good to go.

A few minutes later as I walked past the tower some shots started ringing out around me.  By now my guy was very dehydrated and I couldn't run, so I very slowly walked around the corner of a building and out of his line of sight.  Walked around the building a bit more and then some dude came up behind me and clubbed me with a baseball bat and that was that.

Respawned my second character into a low-pop night server.  Walked a bit and came to a house.  Some other player was walking around too and homed in on my flashlight and started punching me.  I clicked the light off and ran and eventually lost him.  Much, much later I found a road and started following it.  Again my guy got dehydrated so all I could do was walk.  I found several houses with some loot and got a backpack, compass, first aid kit, helmet, camo pants and hoodie, and a shovel, so I was feeling pretty good about things.  Then I saw a street sign leading to a town so I slowly walked the kilometer to the town.  Started to head for some buildings when a zed comes out of nowhere and starts beating on me.  I put away my flashlight and got out my shovel but now I couldn't see anything.  Eventually the zed knocked me unconscious and ate me, so after an hour or so of walking around I was dead again!

Brutal game.  I need to figure out how to get water asap.  I saw a thread on SimHQ that had a map of water locations- I'm going to try that out for my next run.

Did you see any canteens you could scavenge? I imagine that's how you would get by between water sources.

If it's ARMA2 engine then you need to turn off head movement effects and motion blur or something.

I get motion sickness from a fairly large amount of First-Person Shooters but ARMA2 surprisingly didn't bother me (after turning off the head bob and motion blur of course).  The biggest culprits are the ones based on the Unreal engine, when played in widescreen.  There are a lot of those.

Does the DayZ standalone actually use the ARMA2 engine?   Did they get a license or something?

It certainly looks exactly like ARMA 2, but I don't know the details.  Head bob was one of the first things I turned off.  I might need to check the blur; I know I still had it on but I didn't know that could affect motion sickness.

Like I said, I was fairly sick yesterday anyway and had just drank a big cup of coffee, so that might have had some effect on my stomach.  I know more after I log some more hours.  I don't think ARMA2 has made me sick previously.

Alrighty, now I'm starting to get somewhere!

My first 3 respawns today all ended very quickly with zeds pouncing on me and killing me.  I think I was respawning on the same server into the same general area and it must be a zed spawn point.

On my 4th respawn I spawned near an airfield.  Very quickly I found an axe, baseball bat, and shotgun shells.  Then all of a sudden while I'm prowling around I see this flash of a guy behind me with some sort of mask on and a big friggin rifle.  So immediately I swing at him with my bat and he starts yelling, "Dude friendly friendly!  Don't hit me!"  So I stop and wave and then we start chatting.  He hooked me up with a water bottle and gave me directions to a well.  Then I found a backpack and he pointed out an M-16 that I hadn't even seen.  Sweet!

I walked in the general direction he indicated and then we both came across a guy bleeding out.  We were about the help him but he had enough bandages to help himself.  Then I left those guys, even though I actually wanted to stick with them since I am such a n00b but I didn't want to slow them down.  A few exits out to check a map and I finally figured out where I am on the map and found a water fountain.  I got full of water, then filled my water bottle, and also found some hunting pants, a bandana, beans, cereal, and some other odds and ends.

Now I feel kind of invested in my character.  If I can find some 7.62 rounds for my M-16 I should be able to handle the next zed I come across; melee weapons don't appear to be working properly so a gun is vital.

At any rate, I have some food and water, a melee weapon, a gun with no ammo, and a glimmer of hope. :)

It was nice to not get shot on sight finally.   ::)

Must be similar to Iron Front.

I think the stand alone is being produced by Bohemia Interactive, so the engine is certainly ARMA or a derivative of it.

Well there was some speculation that ARMA 2 sold well just because a lot of people want to play DayZ rather than stock ARMA 2.

Silent Disapproval Robot

Not just speculation.  BI confirmed it.  The DayZ mod is really what pushed ArmA II into the top Steam sales.  The DayZ servers regularly surpass all other ArmA servers in traffic.
