Doesn't the RCMP have some kind of militarized unit for this sort of occurrence?

And it's happening not too far (about 40 minute drive) from Migsy's office.

If he has assault rifles the RCMP is not designed to deal with it. Why not the army? They have personal armor, they can use APCs on the roads blocks, seems like the right gear for the job. We don't have the paranoia of our army, maybe because they don't have the heavy weapons of the US forces? We basically trust them to do their job without trashing the place.

There are ERTs similar to your SWAT. They are more trained for clearing a fixed building than open field manhunts. Again the Army seems appropriate.

We used the Army in a standoff years back against the Mohawks. AFAIR it was settled without a bloody mess.

If people dont like the thought of using the army for these types of events, isn't it understandable that the other organizations must try to gear up if they have to deal with them? It's a black hole. You have to fill the role somehow.

Toronto also likes to call out the army to shovel the streets if it snows too much for the yuppies to ride their bikes in January....  :P

There are twitter pics of the RCMP "SWAT" showing up on scene in Brinks armoured cars.... We have not para-militarized our police forces quite yet....

It's law in the US. The Posse Comitatus Act prohibits the Army from participating in domestic law enforcement.

The Army did a good job of ensuring things didn't escalate worse after the Quebec Provincial police got a bloody nose.  Also not to forget the October Crisis back in 1970 (War Measures Act invoked).  The War Measures act was replaced by the Emergencies Act.

That being said, I think that they got the cop killer before the Army deployed.
